Makoto's breath came in shallow gasps as he scrambled to his feet. The massive demon with the axe stood only a few feet away, its molten yellow eyes glaring at him with murderous intent.

"Lucky little pest," the demon snarled, its clawed hands tightening around the haft of its weapon. "Let's see if you can dodge this!"

The demon raised its axe, and Makoto's stomach dropped. There was no time to think, no time to plan. He acted purely on instinct.

He ducked as the axe came down in a brutal arc, missing his head by inches and splitting the ground with a deafening crack. The impact sent shards of rock flying, and Makoto stumbled backward, narrowly avoiding a jagged piece that grazed his arm.

"This is insane!" Makoto shouted, his voice cracking. "I'm not a fighter! I can't—"

The demon swung again, forcing him to dive out of the way. He hit the ground hard, dirt and gravel scraping his palms. The amulet around his neck flared with a sudden, searing heat, and Makoto winced, clutching it instinctively.

"Focus, kid!" Justice called from her spot on a nearby rock. She was lounging casually, watching the fight like it was her favorite soap opera. "You've got the tools—use them!"

Makoto stared at her in disbelief. "What tools?! I don't even have a weapon!"

"Sure you do," Justice said, tapping her temple. "That brain of yours. And that shiny little trinket around your neck."

Makoto frowned, glancing down at the amulet. Its jagged runes glowed faintly, pulsing in time with his racing heartbeat.

This thing… did it help me before?

The demon roared, charging at him again. Makoto scrambled out of the way, his shoes skidding on the loose gravel. His mind raced as he tried to piece together what Justice meant.

The altar back in the canyon—the way it had flared to life when he stepped on it—had to be connected to the amulet. It had activated somehow, repelling the beast that had chased him before. Could the amulet do more than that?

"Okay, think, think!" Makoto muttered, his eyes darting around the rocky clearing. He spotted a large jagged boulder a few feet away, its surface etched with faint markings.

It wasn't much, but it was all he had.

Makoto sprinted toward the boulder, his heart pounding as the demon roared behind him. He reached the rock just as the creature swung its axe, the blade missing him by a hair and embedding itself in the stone with a metallic clang.

The runes on the boulder flared to life, glowing in bright red patterns that snaked across its surface. The amulet around Makoto's neck burned hotter, the runes on its surface glowing in response.

"What the—?" Makoto gasped, shielding his eyes as a sudden burst of light erupted from the boulder.

The demon howled in pain, staggering back as the light engulfed the clearing. The axe slipped from its hands, clattering to the ground as the creature fell to its knees.

Makoto lowered his arm cautiously, blinking through the haze. The boulder had gone dark, its runes now lifeless. The demon lay on the ground, groaning in defeat.

Justice gave a low whistle, hopping down from her perch. "Well, color me impressed. Didn't think you'd figure that one out."

Makoto turned to her, his legs trembling. "I-I didn't figure anything out! I just ran for my life and hoped for the best!"

Justice smirked, clapping him on the shoulder. "Exactly. That's what we call strategy down here, kid."

Makoto opened his mouth to argue, but before he could, the demon let out a low growl.

"Go ahead," it said, its voice rough and guttural. "Finish me."

Makoto froze, his stomach turning. "Finish you?"

The demon raised its head, glaring at him with molten eyes. "You won. I'm at your mercy."

Makoto took a step back, his hands shaking. "I-I didn't come here to kill anyone!"

Justice crossed her arms, tilting her head. "Merciful, huh? That's a rare trait around here."

The demon growled again, struggling to push itself to its feet. "Then why are you here, human? You don't belong in this world."

Makoto hesitated, clutching the amulet. "I… I don't know why I'm here. All I know is that I need to survive and find a way home."

The demon's eyes flicked to the amulet, narrowing slightly. "That thing around your neck…"

Makoto tensed. "What about it?"

"It makes you dangerous," the demon said. "More dangerous than you realize. If you don't know what it is, you'll never survive."

Justice grinned. "Now you're getting it. See, kid? Even the locals know you've got potential."

Makoto frowned, looking between the two of them. "Potential for what?"

Justice clapped her hands together. "That's what we're gonna find out. But first…" She turned to the demon, her grin sharpening. "What do you say, big guy? You gonna let him walk out of here, or do I need to get involved?"

The demon growled low in its throat but didn't move. Finally, it lowered its head. "You win, human. But don't expect every demon you meet to be so merciful."

Makoto let out a shaky breath, his legs nearly giving out beneath him.

Justice leaned in, her grin widening. "Welcome to Hell, kid. You've officially made your first enemy—and your first ally."

The demon left shortly after, disappearing into the shadows with a grudging snarl. Makoto watched it go, a deep unease settling in his chest.

"Is it going to come back?" he asked, glancing at Justice.

She shrugged. "Maybe. But probably not. You kicked its butt fair and square, so it'll think twice before messing with you again."

Makoto frowned. "But I didn't really do anything. The amulet and the boulder did all the work."

"Exactly," Justice said, pointing to the amulet. "That thing's your trump card. Use it right, and you might actually survive long enough to figure out why you're here."

Makoto looked down at the amulet, its surface now dim and unremarkable. It felt heavier than before, like it carried a weight he couldn't yet understand.

Justice started walking, waving for him to follow. "Come on. There's a town up ahead. You're gonna want to stock up before your next big adventure."

Makoto hesitated, glancing back at the empty clearing.

A town? In Hell?

He shook his head, hurrying after Justice. "Wait—what kind of town are we talking about?"

Justice laughed, her voice echoing through the canyon. "You'll see, kid. Just don't expect a warm welcome."

Makoto sighed, clutching the amulet tightly. "Why do I feel like this is only going to get worse?"
