Chapter 9: "Dinner and a Fight"
Makoto gripped the edge of the table as the lead demon strode into the diner, his sharp features twisted into a cruel smirk. The other patrons quickly fell silent, their eyes darting between the newcomers and Justice.
"Well, human," the demon said, stopping a few feet from their table. "You're a hard one to track down. Almost like you don't want to die."
Makoto swallowed hard, trying to keep calm. "I—I really don't. So if you could just leave me alone…"
The demon laughed, a deep, mocking sound. "Leave you alone? Oh no, little human. You've got something we want. And I don't leave empty-handed."
Makoto's hand instinctively went to the bag around his neck, clutching it tightly.
Justice, meanwhile, leaned back in her seat, looking completely unfazed. "Man, you guys just don't quit, do you?" She reached for her drink, taking a slow sip. "You know, I was really starting to enjoy this place. Now you've gone and ruined the vibe."
The demon's crimson eyes narrowed. "Step aside, High Prosecutor. This doesn't concern you."
Justice grinned, baring her sharp teeth. "See, that's where you're wrong. The kid's with me, and I don't take kindly to anyone trying to mess with my people."
Makoto blinked, glancing at her. "Your people?"
"Figure of speech, kid," Justice said, waving him off.
The demon growled, signaling to his underlings. "Kill her. Bring me the human alive."
The first demon lunged, brandishing a jagged blade. Justice didn't even flinch.
In a blur of motion, she ducked under the attack, her fist slamming into the demon's chest with enough force to send it crashing through a nearby table. The other demons hesitated, glancing at each other uncertainly.
"Come on," Justice said, adjusting her sunglasses. "I don't have all night."
The remaining demons charged all at once, but it was like watching children try to fight a hurricane. Justice weaved through their attacks with ease, her movements fluid and precise. A sharp kick sent one flying into the wall, while a well-placed elbow strike left another groaning on the floor.
Makoto could only watch in awe as she dismantled the group, her grin never wavering.
"You know," she said, dodging a swing, "this is almost too easy. You guys really need to hit the gym or something."
The lead demon snarled, stepping forward as his underlings lay scattered across the diner. "You think you're clever, High Prosecutor? Let's see how you handle this."
He raised his hand, and dark energy began to swirl around his palm. The air grew heavy, and the faint smell of ozone filled the room.
Makoto's eyes widened. "Justice, look out!"
Before the demon could unleash his attack, Justice moved. In the blink of an eye, she was in front of him, her fist slamming into his gut with enough force to knock the wind out of him. The dark energy fizzled out, and he crumpled to the ground with a pained groan.
Justice dusted off her hands, grinning. "Nice try."
As the last of the demons lay groaning on the floor, the other patrons in the diner slowly returned to their meals, as if nothing had happened.
Makoto let out a shaky breath, slumping back in his seat. "That was… intense."
Justice plopped down across from him, grabbing her drink and taking another sip. "Eh, it was nothing. You'll see worse down here sooner or later."
Makoto frowned, glancing at the unconscious demons. "Why are they after me, anyway? It's not like I asked to be here."
Justice smirked, tapping the table. "That amulet of yours, kid. It's like a beacon for trouble. Some demons want it for the power it holds, and others just want to make sure you don't get too far with it. Either way, you're a walking target."
Makoto sighed, staring down at his hands. "I didn't ask for any of this…"
Justice's grin softened slightly, and she leaned forward. "I know, kid. But you're here now, and whining about it won't get you anywhere. You've gotta keep moving forward, one step at a time."
Makoto hesitated, then nodded. "You're right. I just… hope I can figure out what to do before it's too late."
As they got up to leave, Makoto's foot caught on the edge of the table, sending him tumbling forward.
"Whoa, kid!" Justice yelped as he crashed into her, sending both of them sprawling onto the floor.
Makoto groaned, blinking as he tried to get his bearings. He quickly realized two things:
He had landed directly on top of Justice.
His hands were in a very, very awkward place.
"I—I'm so sorry!" Makoto stammered, scrambling to his feet and holding his hands up defensively. "I didn't mean to—!"
Justice blinked up at him from the floor, her sunglasses slightly askew. For a moment, she just stared.
Then, to Makoto's horror, she burst out laughing.
"Man, you really can't catch a break, huh?" she said, sitting up and adjusting her sunglasses. "You've got the worst kind of luck."
Makoto flushed, waving his hands frantically. "I swear, it was an accident! Please don't kill me!"
Justice grinned, standing up and ruffling his hair. "Relax, kid. I'm not mad. But you might wanna be more careful next time. Some demons aren't as forgiving as me."
Makoto groaned, burying his face in his hands. "This place is going to be the death of me…"
Justice chuckled, slinging an arm around his shoulders as they headed for the door. "Cheer up, kid. You've survived this long, haven't you?"
Makoto sighed, shaking his head. "Barely."
As they stepped out into the night, a shadowy figure watched them from the rooftop across the street.
"They're stronger than I expected," the figure muttered, its glowing eyes narrowing. "But the human won't last forever. Not here. At least not unless Lady Lucifer will get satisfied."
The figure disappeared into the darkness, leaving behind only the faint scent of sulfur.
