Chapter 1

Naruto Uzumaki

The moon shone brightly in the sky, casting its silvery glow across the land. The air was cool and crisp, with a gentle breeze rustling through the leaves of the trees. In the depths of the forest, two figures darted through the trees, their movements swift and silent.

The figures were Naruto Uzumaki and Itachi Uchiha, two ANBU operatives on a mission to eliminate a notorious drug lord operating in the Land of Fire. Their target, a man named Gato, was known for his ruthlessness and cruelty, supplying dangerous narcotics to vulnerable villages and exploiting innocent civilians for his personal gain.

Naruto, with spiky blond hair and piercing blue eyes, glanced at his partner, a hint of annoyance in his gaze.

"You know, it's just the two of us here, Itachi. We don't need to be this formal." his voice muffled slightly by the raven mask covering his face.

Itachi, his own face obscured by a weasel mask, raised an eyebrow.

"We are ANBU operatives, Naruto-kun," he replied, his voice a gentle reminder. "We must maintain our professionalism at all times, even when alone."

Naruto let out a small sigh, his breath fogging slightly in the cool night air.

"I know, I know."

He relented, a hint of playful annoyance in his voice. "But it's not like we're in the village. No one's going to see us out here."

Itachi chuckled softly, his voice a soothing presence in the quiet forest. "Even so, we must uphold the ANBU code," he insisted gently. "It is what separates us from ordinary shinobi."

Naruto rolled his eyes playfully. He knew Itachi was right, but he couldn't help but poke fun at his friend's seriousness. But he admired Itachi's dedication to the ANBU code, and his unwavering commitment to their duties. Even though he sometimes found the rules a bit stifling, he understood their importance.

With a final glance at his partner, Naruto adjusted his mask and refocused on their mission. They were ANBU operatives, protectors of the village, and they had a duty to fulfill.

"So, what's the plan again?" his gaze shifting towards the camp nestled amidst the trees.

Itachi crouched down, his sharp eyes scanning the camp. "I spot ten guards. That's quite low, considering the target's high value."

Naruto crouched beside him, his blue eyes narrowed in concentration.

"Yeah, like the assholes are stronger than mere guards," he mused, considering the possibilities.

Itachi nodded in agreement. "That's a possibility. But on the other hand, our target might be running low on funds. These could be the only thugs he can afford."

Naruto let out a sigh, his gaze fixed on the guards patrolling the camp's perimeter.

"We'll never know unless things go south," grumbling, his hand instinctively reaching for the kunai strapped to his thigh.

Itachi chuckled softly, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "If uncertainty was truly a problem for you, Naruto-kun, you would never have joined the ANBU."

Naruto grinned, a spark of determination igniting in his eyes. "You're right."

His voice filled with newfound resolve. "Let's get this done."

He stood up, brushing off his pants, and glanced at Itachi, who was already fiddling with a kunai.

With a hint of amusement in his voice, Naruto said, "But still, we have to do everything so silently and quietly. It takes some of the fun out of it."

He paused, his gaze sweeping over the guards patrolling the camp's perimeter.

"Like right now, we'll never know these guys' true strength. They could be Jounin-level or some lowlife thugs for all we know."

Itachi nodded slowly, his dark eyes narrowed in thought. "Indeed. But the ANBU's job is to do things efficiently and quietly. We can't make a spectacle of this."

Naruto rolled his eyes playfully. "Why do you always feel the need to lecture me about everything?" he asked, a hint of mock annoyance in his voice. "We went through the ANBU program together, in case you've forgotten."

Itachi chuckled, clapping Naruto on the shoulder.

"Because if you're anything like your mother," he said, his voice laced with gentle teasing, "you can get reckless if you don't agree with certain things. I'm just doing my job as your partner, making sure you stick to the rules."

And with that, he shunshined away, leaving Naruto standing alone in the moonlit forest.

Naruto shook his head as he shunshined after Itachi, a wry smile tugging at his lips.

Itachi might be his best friend, but damn... the guy needed to chill sometimes.

The thought brought a chuckle to his throat as he landed silently in the midst of the camp. It wasn't like he had forgotten the importance of being ANBU, or the responsibilities that came with wearing the mask. He was just... annoyed by Itachi's constant reminders.

The camp was eerily quiet, the only sound the crackling of the campfire and the distant chirping of crickets. Naruto crouched behind a bush, his senses alert as he observed the guards patrolling the perimeter. He spotted his first target, a burly man with a dull glint in his eyes.

Judging from the man's chakra level, he was around the level of a thug. So unless the gods decided to punish them for whatever reason, the mission should be a piece of cake.

Naruto grinned, a predatory glint in his eyes. He was ready to get this mission over with.

Naruto crept forward, his movements fluid and silent as a whisper. He reached the guard, his hand darting out to cover the man's mouth. A swift twist, a muffled gasp, and the guard slumped to the ground, unconscious.

He dragged the guard into the shadows, concealing him from view. His heart pounded in his chest, a mix of adrenaline and a grim satisfaction. He had taken a life, even if it was in the line of duty. The weight of his actions settled upon him, a heavy burden he had learned to carry.

He repeated the process with the remaining guards, his movements efficient and precise. Each takedown fueled his determination, a grim reminder of the darkness he faced and the innocents he protected.

The camp was now eerily silent, the only sound the crackling flames and the distant hooting of an owl. Naruto, his face grim, made his way towards Gato's tent, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. The moment of confrontation was at hand.

With the remaining guards swiftly dealt with, Itachi joined Naruto as he exchanged a quick glance, a silent understanding passing between them. They crept towards the tent, their movements as silent as the night itself.

Inside the tent, Gato, the obese drug lord, sat up in his bed, his brow furrowed in confusion. The earlier commotion had vanished, replaced by an unsettling silence.

"What's going on out there?" he grumbled, his voice thick with suspicion. "I hope none of you are slacking off!"

He threw the tent flap open, his eyes scanning the clearing. It was deserted. Not a single guard remained. A wave of fear washed over him, his heart pounding in his chest.

"Where the hell did they go?" he muttered, his voice laced with panic.

As he turned to retreat back into the tent, his eyes fell upon a figure standing just outside. A masked man clad in black, his piercing blue eyes glinting in the moonlight.

Gato's breath hitched in his throat, his blood turning to ice. He was trapped.

"They're preparing for your arrival," Naruto said, his voice a chilling whisper that echoed in the tense silence.

Before Gato could even scream, a sharp pain erupted in his chest, his breath catching in his throat. He looked down with trembling hands, his eyes widening in horror as he saw the blade protruding from his chest. His face paled, his body collapsing forward as life drained from his eyes.

Naruto sidestepped, avoiding the falling body with a look of disgust.

"You know, you could have killed him and pushed him to the side instead," his voice laced with annoyance. "I don't appreciate getting touched by such a pig."

Itachi, his sword dripping with blood, emerged from behind the fallen corpse, calm and collected. "At least his blood is on my sword, and not yours. I'd say I took the worse end of the deal this time."

Naruto groaned, waving his hand dismissively as he was already moving towards the tent. "Whatever, man, Let's burn this place to the ground and return home. I'm exhausted."

Itachi followed close behind, a small smile playing on his lips. "As you wish."

They entered the tent, their movements swift and efficient as they gathered any incriminating evidence and valuables. Within moments, they emerged, setting the tent ablaze, the flames quickly engulfing the entire camp.

The cool night air was a welcome contrast to the stifling atmosphere within. The flames from the burning camp crackled and hissed, casting dancing shadows across their faces.

The mission was complete, but the weight of their actions settled heavily upon them.

Naruto and Itachi turned away from the burning camp, their footsteps echoing in the silent night as they made their way back to Konoha.

Their footsteps were muffled by the soft earth beneath their feet. The moon had dipped below the horizon, and the first light of dawn was beginning to paint the sky with streaks of orange and pink.

They continued their journey, the silence between them a comfortable companion.

As they approached the gates of Konoha, a sense of homecoming washed over them. The familiar sight of the village, nestled amidst the towering trees, brought a sense of peace and belonging.

Together, they stepped through the gates of Konoha, their footsteps echoing in the quiet morning as they returned home.

Naruto and Itachi landed silently on the floor of the Hokage's office, kneeling in unison as they announced their presence.

"Hokage-sama," they reported in unison, their voices carrying a hint of fatigue from their mission.

Hiruzen, the Sandaime Hokage, turned in his chair, his gaze falling upon the two masked figures. A wisp of smoke curled from his pipe, the scent of tobacco filling the air.

"At ease, you two," he said, his voice warm and inviting. "Drop the masks."

Naruto and Itachi obeyed, removing their masks to reveal their youthful features. Naruto, with his spiky blond hair and whisker marks, and Itachi, with his stoic expression and dark eyes.

"Mission accomplished, Hokage-sama," Itachi reported formally.

Hiruzen nodded, his gaze shifting between the two young men. I trust everything went smoothly?" he inquired, his eyes twinkling with curiosity.

Naruto grinned, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "As smooth as a baby's bottom, Hokage-sama," he replied, his tone lighthearted. "Though, we did stumble upon a little something."

He reached into his cloak and produced the two bundles of cash they had confiscated from Gato's tent. "We found this hidden in the target's belongings. Figured it might be put to better use in the village."

Hiruzen's eyebrows rose in surprise, a chuckle escaping his lips. "Indeed it will. A generous contribution to the village funds. You two have done well."

A sense of satisfaction settled over Naruto. It wasn't about the money itself, but the thought of contributing to the village, of making a difference, however small.

"You're dismissed," Hiruzen said, his voice filled with gratitude. "Get some rest, you've earned it."

Naruto and Itachi bowed their heads in acknowledgment before shunshining out of the office, leaving Hiruzen to ponder the events of the night and the unexpected windfall for the village.

Naruto and Itachi landed on the rooftop of the Hokage Tower, the cool night air whipping through their hair. Below them, the village stretched out like a tapestry of twinkling lights, a beacon of warmth and life in the vast darkness.

"I knew it was a good idea to bring the man's money with us. We'll probably get a bonus for this." Naruto smirked, leaning against the railing, his arms crossed.

Itachi raised an eyebrow, his lips curving into a slight smile. "Indeed," he said, his voice laced with amusement. "Though, I doubt you need the money."

Naruto shrugged, his grin widening. "It's not about the money, Itachi. It's about the principle of the thing. Besides, it never hurts to have a little extra cash on hand."

Itachi chuckled, shaking his head. "You're incorrigible."

Naruto's grin widened as he said proudly. "That's what they all say."

A comfortable silence fell between them, their gazes fixed on the village below. The gentle hum of life, the distant sounds of laughter and conversation, created a soothing symphony that echoed through the night.

"If you really needed the money, then why didn't you just keep it?" Itachi asked curiously.

Naruto scoffed playfully.

"I'm going to pretend you didn't just ask that, mister 'all for the rules' Uchiha," he retorted, his tone lighthearted.

"But to humor you, I didn't want to be branded a traitor for keeping information from Oji-san, and it's also going to please him knowing we bring stuff like this to him. Think of it as an investment in his trust and backup in any future matters."

Itachi raised a brow at him and snorted. "You're smarter than you look."

Naruto's eye twitched in annoyance, his voice rising in mock offense, "What was that supposed to mean?!"

Itachi chuckled, shaking his head. "Nothing. Just an observation."

A playful smirk tugged at Naruto's lips as he retorted, his tone laced with mock threat. "You're lucky you're my best friend. Otherwise, I'd make you pay for that insult."

Itachi merely smiled, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "I'm sure you would."

Itachi broke the comfortable silence, his voice almost a gentle murmur. "Naruto."

He began, his tone laced with concern, "My mother invited you to dinner. She's worried about you."

Naruto's eyebrows shot up in surprise, a nervous shiver running down his spine.

"Mikoto-san did?" he asked, a flicker of apprehension replacing the usual mischievous glint in his eyes. While he had always enjoyed Mikoto's company, finding comfort in her kind and understanding nature, the thought of facing her displeasure sent a wave of anxiety through him.

Itachi nodded, a rare smile gracing his lips. "She says you haven't been around much lately. Ever since you got the duty of overlooking the village security seals, you've been busy."

Naruto grimaced. He knew he'd been neglecting his friends and the Uchiha family, but his new responsibilities with the security seals, coupled with his training with Jiraiya-sensei, had kept him occupied.

"I'll try to make more time," with a hint of guilt in his voice, he said.

He paused, a hesitant expression crossing his face. "To be honest, Itachi,"

his voice barely above a whisper, "I've been a bit...uncomfortable coming to your house lately."

Itachi's smile faltered, his brow furrowing in concern. "Uncomfortable? Why?" he asked, his voice filled with genuine curiosity.

"Don't tell me that the almighty Uchiha Itachi hasn't noticed how displeased his father is every time I'm around."

Itachi nodded, admitting as his expression turned serious. "I've noticed, but I don't think it has anything to do with you as a person."

Naruto's brow furrowed in confusion. "How can it not be my fault? He's civil when I'm not around."

"He does actually," Itachi corrected. "I suspect it has something to do with him still having sour feelings left after the Yondaime Hokage selection where your father beat him to it."

Naruto snorted, a hint of bitterness in his voice. "So, I get to take the blame for something my father has done."

He muttered, shaking his head. "Great."

Itachi paused, a thoughtful expression crossing his face. "My mother misses you, Naruto. She wants to see you. And so does Sasuke."

Naruto's expression softened. He thought of Mikoto's warm and beautiful smile and Sasuke's cheerful laughter. Despite his reservations about Fugaku, he couldn't deny the fondness he felt for Itachi's family.

"Alright, I'll think about it," he said finally, a faint smile returning to his lips at the thought of Mikoto.

Itachi nodded, relief washing over his features. "Please come, she'll be happy to see you," he said, his voice filled with gratitude.

Naruto paused, a wistful expression crossing his face as he mused aloud, "Maybe having Shisui there would make things a bit easier."

Itachi chuckled. "There's no doubt about it. But he is on a mission."

Naruto sighed dejectedly as without his other friend, Shisui, at the dinner. it would be difficult.

He turned his gaze towards the starry sky, a thoughtful expression crossing his face.

"Sometimes I really wonder if Kaa-chan taught me the sealing she could, so I'd be working closely with Tou-san since he was always so busy at the office," he mused, his voice barely above a whisper.

Itachi looked at him curiously as he asked, "Where does this come from?"

Naruto shrugged, a sad smile gracing his lips. "I don't know. It just comes out when I let my mind run loose."

Itachi nodded slowly, understanding dawning in his eyes. "Perhaps she did. But I think she also wanted you to have a family, Naruto. People who care about you."

Naruto's heart swelled with warmth at Itachi's words. He looked at his friend, his eyes filled with gratitude. "Thanks, Itachi."

Itachi smiled back, a genuine smile that reached his eyes. "Anytime, Naruto."

With the promise of a warm meal and the chance to reconnect with Mikoto, Naruto felt a sense of comfort settle over him. Despite the challenges and anxieties that lay ahead, he knew he could always find solace in the bonds of friendship and the warmth of a family, even if it wasn't his own.
