A/N: We've reached the penultimate chapter. I was thinking of doing separate chapters, but since they share the same number, I combined the two. Enjoy the cringe.
Judgment/Aeon - XX
The arcana is the means by which all is revealed.
The time of reckoning has come. Humanity stands before the scales, burdened by the weight of its choices. Judgment spares no one, not even those who strive for redemption. Although the end remains unchanged, all truths are laid bare, and humanity must confront what it is and what it has wrought.
Beyond the cycles of life and death lies the spark of infinite potential—a yearning to transcend human limitations. The Aeon shines with boundless possibility, but even infinity cannot escape the grasp of the end.
Two paths, one focusing on personal reckoning and the other on spiritual enlightenment, converged, creating two cards with the same number: XX - Judgment and Aeon. While focusing on different elements, they represent a shift from one state to another. Both cards point to a higher purpose, encouraging reflection and action in alignment with universal truths.
The main difference lies in their perspective. Judgment attacks more personally, tied to moral or karmic evaluation, while Aeon possesses more expansive, collective, or universal energy.
And with his team back together again, Makoto heard a familiar voice in his head.
"I am thou… thou art I. The bond they hast nurtured hath finally matured. The innermost power of the Fool Arcana hath been set free. We now bestow upon thee… The ultimate form of the Fool within thyself."
Within his soul, the Fool Arcana card shimmered and transformed. Its muted colors of dark indigo brightened into a lustrous gold, signifying its completion. Another gold tier card has been added to his collection, and another chapter of his life has been completed. However, the voice wasn't done speaking.
"I am thou… thou art I. Thou hast established a new bond. Thou shall have our blessings when thou chooseth to create a Persona of the Judgment Arcana."
Another card fitted into his deck. The card depicted an angelic being playing a song from a trumpet. Beneath its instrument stood a family of three, a mother, father, and their child.
Makoto felt the power course through his veins, and with his evolution, the team of S.E.E.S evolved as well. Together, they became the Nyx Annihilation Team.
Within him, Orpheus stirred. The strings of his lyre hummed softly, a melody meant only for Makoto to hear.
"Our strength deepens," Orpheus intoned, his voice imbued with pride and loyalty.
Orpheus had been Makoto's first Persona, his constant companion through the chaos. Despite the allure of stronger fusions, Makoto had never discarded him. Their bond was unshakable—a tether not just of power but of trust.
"Dude, you okay?" Junpei asked him. "You're spacing out on us."
Makoto opened his eyes, seeing everyone looking towards him. He leaned forward, resting his arms on his knees. "Yeah. I was just… thinking. Do you guys ever talk to your Personas? Like, actually have conversations with them?"
The question hung in the air for a moment, causing raised eyebrows.
Junpei was the first to crack. "Oh, thank god!" He slumped back dramatically, relief flooding his face. "I thought I was losing it or something. Trismegistus and I chat all the time! Seriously, he's like the coolest bro—even before when he was Hermes. He's got vibes."
Akihiko chuckled softly. "Glad I'm not the only one. Caesar's… well, he's loud and tends to monologue. But he means well. Calls us his soldiers, like we're in some grand epic."
Yukari sighed, but a little smile tugged at her lips. "Isis? She's a total worrywart. Like a nanny who will not leave her kids alone. I've wanted to tell her to chill, but…" Her eyes flicked to Makoto, her expression sharpening. "Whenever you get hurt, she panics the most."
Makoto raised an eyebrow. "I'll try to avoid scaring her then, but I make no promises."
Ken scratched the back of his head, a sheepish grin forming. "Kala-Nemi's… uh, eccentric. He shouts attack names and tosses out these over-the-top one-liners before taking out Shadows. It's kinda embarrassing." He hesitated, then smirked. "But there was one I liked: 'I am the storm that is approaching.'"
"That's hardcore!" Junpei lit up, punching his fist into his palm. "Trismegistus and I need epic one-liners like that!"
Yukari rolled her eyes. "Oh, please, don't encourage him."
Meanwhile, Fuuka and Mitsuru exchanged amused glances before laughing.
"If I had to describe Artemisia," Mitsuru began, her tone thoughtful, "I'd say she's completely no-nonsense and battle-focused. She does, however, appreciate well-planned strategies." Her lips twitched into a rare smirk. "She even complimented Yuki-san recently. Though, she did add that he could 'bulk up' more."
Akihiko seized the moment, grinning. "Finally, someone agrees with me. Leader, no more excuses. Artemisia says you need more muscles."
Makoto shook his head though. "I'm fine with endurance training."
Fuuka smiled warmly, interjecting, "Juno has such a kind heart. She sings to me sometimes and enjoys watching us spend time together. But…" She hesitated, glancing at Koromaru. "She's extremely paranoid about Koro-chan running around with a dangerous weapon in his mouth."
Everyone turned to the Shiba Inu, who barked cheerfully, tail wagging.
"He says, 'I am a trained professional. There is no need to worry.'" Aigis translated, her tone more full of emotion. "He also adds… Cerberus is too irritable."
Ken tilted his head. "Do its heads fight with each other?"
Koromaru whined as if confirming.
Laughter erupted among the group, the camaraderie cutting through the heaviness of their mission. Even the Persona world, with all its chaos and danger, had its moments of levity.
"So do you have a lot of voices in your head, or just one at a time?" Junpei asked Makoto. "I bet it gets annoying."
Makoto shrugged. "At first, yeah, it was kind of overwhelming. But after a while, I got used to it. Orpheus does most of the talking, but the others chime in now and then." He paused, scratching his cheek awkwardly. "Although… some of them have established rivalries with each other."
Junpei's eyes widened. "Wait, seriously? Like what? Are they arguing about who gets to kick more Shadow butt?"
"Sort of," Makoto hissed. "For example, Orpheus can't stand Oberon and his kingly attitude. They're constantly in a shouting match."
"Sounds like a family feud," Yukari quipped, shaking her head.
"Don't even get me started on Thanatos," Makoto added with a sigh. "He's quiet most of the time, but when he does speak, everyone else shuts up. Except Orpheus, who always has something to say to him."
Junpei leaned back, crossing his arms with an exaggerated grin. "Man, I wish Trismegistus had drama like that. He likes to say, 'Stay cool, Junpei,' or 'Let the winds carry you.'"
"Hmm, almost sounds like his partner is a hothead," Akihiko teased.
"Hey, it's called synergy!" Junpei shot back.
Makoto chuckled. "Synergy or not, try juggling their personalities when they all want to fight at once. It's like running a debating club in the middle of a battlefield."
"Sounds exhausting," Fuuka said with a sympathetic smile.
"It is," Makoto replied, leaning back. "But it's also kind of… reassuring. Each of them has their quirks, but at the end of the day, they're all part of me."
Aigis tilted her head thoughtfully. "Perhaps their rivalries are simply facets of your own psyche, expressing internal conflict."
"What about you, Aigis?" Yukari inquired.
"Now that Palladion has evolved, I can't say just yet, but before, Palladion rarely spoke. She was always focused on the mission at hand." She paused, lips curling into an amused smile. "However, I recall one instance when I read that Yakuza novel. She picked up a phrase from it: 'Time to take out the trash.'"
Junpei immediately clapped his hands, grinning ear to ear. "That's what I'm talking about, Ai-chan! Let the Shadows know who the Boss is."
Aigis blinked, her expression unchanging. "She seemed to find it quite motivational."
"Motivational? That's straight-up badass! Imagine you're a Shadow, right? You see Aigis roll up, and all you hear is, 'Time to take out the trash.' before being riddled with bullets. Wouldn't you be trembling?"
Makoto smirked. "If you ever write a one-liner book, Junpei, I'm sure Athena would be your number-one fan."
The Magician beamed. "That's it! I'll call it Shadow Smackdowns: The Ultimate Guide to Trash Talk!" he declared, looking far too pleased with himself.
Yukari rolled her eyes but couldn't hide her grin. "You're unbelievable."
"I prefer 'iconic,'" Junpei shot back.
Aigis turned her gaze to Makoto. "Do you find it helpful when your Personas speak during battle?"
Makoto shrugged. "Depends. Sometimes it's helpful. Other times, it's distracting. I once had Jack Frost try to tell me a joke in the middle of a fight."
Junpei started laughing before the line was said. "What? No way. Did he say, 'Chill out!' or something?"
Makoto sighed, shaking his head. "Ice to meet you. It wasn't even funny, but he thought it was."
For a moment, there was silence—then Aigis giggled. It was soft and mechanical, but undeniably genuine. The unexpected sound set off a chain reaction, beginning with Mitsuru of all people.
"Talk about breaking the ice," Mitsuru said, almost under her breath. Her eyes widened as she realized what she'd just said, and she quickly covered her mouth. But it was too late.
Junpei immediately leaned forward, his grin devilish. "Skating on thin ice with that joke, huh, Mitsuru-senpai?"
"That was a mere slip of the tongue!" Mitsuru protested, her face flushing. "Please, ignore that."
"Snow problem, senpai," Junpei countered smoothly, earning an audible groan from Yukari.
"Please, no," she muttered, pinching the bridge of her nose.
Seeing her chance, Aigis followed up with perfect timing. "Don't you find this pun ice-olatingly funny, Yukari-chan?"
The archer's face turned pink as she gaped at Aigis in betrayal. "Aigis, not you too!"
"Looks like everyone's warming up to it!" Junpei added, holding his stomach as he cackled.
"Junpei…" Yukari growled, aiming a half-hearted glare his way.
Makoto simply shook his head, watching the chaos unfold. "Remind me to ban ice-related puns during meetings."
"Don't be so cold-hearted, Leader," Junpei shot back, earning a chorus of giggles from Fuuka and even a light chuckle from Akihiko.
Yukari, however, groaned, rubbing her temples. "You're as sharp as black ice, Stupei," she growled—only to freeze as she realized what she'd just said. Her eyes widened, and she slapped a hand over her mouth.
Junpei gasped dramatically, clutching his chest. "Yukari! Did you just... compliment me? Sharp?"
"It was not a compliment!" she snapped, her face turning as red as a Christmas sweater.
"Too late," Junpei teased, leaning back smugly. "I'm gonna take this win and skate with it."
"Careful," Akihiko said with a grin. "You might slip."
Aigis was having too much fun. "Yukari-chan, perhaps you should reflect on your choice of words. Like a frozen pond, they can be quite slippery."
The team's archer groaned louder, throwing up her hands. "That's it! I'm leaving before you all turn into walking snow cones. Give me hand, Makoto-kun."
As she stormed off towards the kitchen, the group erupted into laughter again, with Koromaru barking happily as if joining in.
"Koro-chan," Fuuka interjected, "That was an ice-cold comeback."
Makoto sighed, rubbing the back of his neck, but the small smile tugging at his lips betrayed him. Even in the coldest of missions, his team's warmth always found a way to shine through.
Junpei urged Makoto to try his hand. "C'mon, Leader, don't flake out on us now. Give us something."
Makoto stood, casually slipping his hands into his pockets as he glanced around the group. His smirk deepened just a bit. "I'm afraid I can't handle this avalanche of humor."
The room went quiet for half a second before the entire team burst into laughter again, even Aigis managing another giggle.
"Makoto!" Junpei shouted, doubling over. "That was perfect! You do have a sense of humor!"
"I only snow my best material when it counts," Makoto quipped, walking off before the laughter grew even louder.
Akihiko grinned, shaking his head. "And here I thought he was the serious one."
"Looks like the Leader's got us all beat," Fuuka added, wiping a tear from her eye.
From across the room, Yukari's voice rang out. "I CAN STILL HEAR YOU!"
Aigis was glad to be back home with her friends. The warmth of the dorm felt different after her reactivation, like stepping into a sanctuary from the chaos of the outside world. Though she didn't express it as openly as the others, the subtle hum in her circuits resonated with something she identified as contentment.
The sound of laughter echoed down the hallway, blending with the faint melody of a song Fuuka had put on in the lounge. Koromaru padded around the living room, his tail wagging as he sniffed at everyone's bags, and the sight made Aigis feel grounded—an odd concept for someone made of metal and wires.
She found herself scanning the room, taking note of each person: Makoto and Yukari rummaging through the kitchen to prepare some dinner, Ken and Junpei engaging in light chatter, and Akihiko polishing his gloves in preparation for the next training session. These moments, she realized, were just as important as the battles they fought.
"I am glad to be home," Aigis said softly, her voice barely cutting through the laughter.
Makoto glanced over, his calm expression softening slightly. "We're glad to have you back, too, Aigis."
Junpei, ever the instigator, turned and grinned. "Yeah, Ai-chan! What's home without our favorite anti-Shadow robot?"
Aigis had the most genuine smile she ever mustered. "This peace is worth fighting for."
Her words, though simple, carried a weight that silenced the room for a moment. Then, Fuuka smiled warmly. "It really is, Aigis."
The group fell into a comfortable rhythm again, laughter and light chatter filling the dorm. And for Aigis, that was more than enough.
"Before I settle back in," she rose, "I ask that everyone form a line. Makoto, you stay in the back, and Koro-chan can start in the front."
A strange request, but the group obliged. Koromaru, always eager to be included, barked once and trotted to the front, his tail wagging in anticipation.
Once the line was formed, Aigis knelt before the Shiba Inu and, to everyone's surprise, gently wrapped her arms around him. Her metal frame was careful and deliberate, and the hug, though unorthodox, felt surprisingly tender.
"I wish to give everyone a hug to celebrate our reunion," she said.
Koromaru barked, voicing his gratitude, and trotted away to let the others receive Aigis' newfound love.
Ken was next. He fidgeted slightly as Aigis smiled and leaned down, hugging the boy to her bosom.
"You have grown stronger, Ken-kun," Aigis said softly. "I am glad to see you are well."
Ken pulled back, his cheeks tinged pink as he avoided the teasing grin from Junpei. "Th-thank you, Aigis-san. Welcome back."
Yukari was up next. "This is nice," she commented. The two shared a tender hug.
"Hmm."
"Aigis?"
The anti-shadow weapon stared down, eying the archer's chest.
"I comprehend," she replied with a nod. "Thank you, Yukari-chan."
Yukari remained confused. "No problem?"
Junpei, the most eager of the group, stepped forward next. He didn't even wait for Aigis and initiated the hug first. She froze for a brief second, her sensors catching up to the sudden contact, but then her arms moved to return the embrace. Unlike the others, Junpei's hug was unrestrained, filled with the easygoing affection he so often exuded.
"It's great to have you back, Ai-chan. We missed you," he said, grinning broadly as he stepped back.
"And I you," Aigis replied with sincerity. Her voice softened as she added, "I missed our conversations, Junpei-kun. You're… da man."
His heart swelled with pride. "That means the world, Ai-chan," he tried not to cry.
Akihiko groaned from the back of the line. "Don't encourage him, Aigis."
"I am simply stating facts," she replied, her tone as earnest as ever.
Fuuka stepped forward next, a soft smile on her face as she approached Aigis. The anti-shadow weapon leaned in, wrapping her arms around the navigator with a tenderness that radiated warmth. She gently rubbed the back of Fuuka's head, a small but affectionate gesture that made the embrace all the more wholesome.
"Welcome home, Aigis," Fuuka said softly, her voice brimming with sincerity.
"Thank you, Fuuka," Aigis replied, her tone equally warm. "It feels great to be home."
As Fuuka stepped away, Akihiko rolled his shoulders and strode forward. Since he was more durable than everyone else, Aigis forwent her usual gentleness. Without warning, she hugged him firmly and lifted the boxer clean off the ground with her impressive strength. Akihiko blinked in surprise for a split second before bursting into a grin.
"Now that's how it's done," he said with a chuckle as his feet touched the ground again. "It's good to have you back, Aigis. The team just wasn't the same without you."
"And I was not the same without the team," Aigis replied, her words carrying weight. "Thank you, Akihiko-senpai. Your strength inspires us all."
Akihiko scratched the back of his neck, looking slightly embarrassed but pleased nonetheless. "Well, somebody's gotta keep Junpei in line," he joked, stepping aside for the next in line.
The penultimate person, Mitsuru, shared her sentiments. Much like Junpei, Mitsuru didn't wait for Aigis to initiate the hug. She closed the distance and embraced her first, her grip firm but filled with warmth.
"I'm glad everything went smoothly," she said. "I made sure the people at the lab took extreme care of your repairs. You have no idea how worried I was."
Aigis returned the hug, her arms tightening ever so slightly around Mitsuru. "And I can't thank you enough, Kirijo-senpai. I was scared… I was scared I'd be terminated."
Mitsuru pulled back just enough to meet Aigis' gaze. "Nonsense," the redhead stated. "I'd never let them terminate a dear friend."
Mitsuru stepped aside, brushing a strand of hair from her face as she nodded.
Finally, the last person in line stepped forward: Makoto.
Aigis straightened slightly at his approach, her sensors subtly registering an increase in her internal activity. Makoto Yuki—the leader of SEES and the one she cherished most.
"Makoto-kun," Aigis began, her tone softening in a way that was almost imperceptible. "You are the last."
Makoto's calm demeanor never faltered. Going three for three, he initiated the hug first. He enveloped her in an embrace that nearly made her short-circuit. Her artificial heart was burning, struggling to process the powerful emotions swirling in her chest.
"Thank you, Aigis," Makoto stated. "I'm glad to have you back."
Aigis fulfilled the desire she hadn't known was so strong until now. She returned the embrace, enveloping him in a way that was both tender and fiercely protective. For her, this was more than a simple reunion. It was a reassurance that everything she had fought for—everything she cared about—was still here.
"You are my most cherished person," she murmured softly, just loud enough for him to hear. "Thank you for waiting for me."
"I never stopped thinking about you," he said, his voice carrying the weight of sincerity.
He shifted slightly, trying to pull back, but Aigis's arms didn't loosen their hold.
"Aigis," he said gently.
"Not yet," she stated, her voice firm but tinged with something vulnerable.
The hug lingered, longer than any before it. Aigis wasn't ready to let go, wasn't ready to end this connection.
"Okay, seriously," Yukari's voice broke through, accompanied by her stepping forward and wedging herself between them. "That's enough hugging."
But instead of complying, Aigis's grip tightened around Makoto, her artificial strength ensuring he wasn't going anywhere.
"No," she whined, her voice uncharacteristically childlike, surprising everyone in the room.
"Uh…" Makoto looked between Aigis and Yukari, unsure of how to de-escalate the situation.
Yukari's eyebrow twitched. "Aigis, let him go."
"Negative," Aigis replied, clinging to Makoto like he was her lifeline. "This embrace is vital for maintaining my emotional stability."
She snapped towards Makoto. "Say something!"
Before he could respond, Aigis snapped her gaze toward Yukari. "Just because you're dating our leader doesn't mean you get to monopolize him," she interjected. "Ever since you two hugged in Yakushima, you've been clingy to him."
Yukari's cheeks turned crimson, her composure shaken. "You saw that?"
"I saw everything."
Junpei stood beside his protege. "I knew it! I knew something was up when I caught you two. Way to spill their secrets, Ai-chan. You can let him go now. We have more interrogations to do."
Surprisingly, Aigis released Makoto almost immediately, stepping back with a crisp nod. "Affirmative. Shall I play the role of the good cop or the bad cop?"
Junpei's grin turned downright mischievous. "You be the bad cop."
Without missing a beat, Aigis's eyes narrowed as she crossed her arms. "Understood. Activating interrogation mode."
"Whoa, hold on!" Yukari protested. "There's no need for an interrogation!"
"It's too late, Yuka-tan. What did you and Makoto do on the night of your embrace? Don't make me sic Ai-chan on you."
Aigis nodded solemnly. "Interrogation in progress. Subjects: Yukari Takeba. Makoto Yuki. Commencing extraction of information regarding Yakushima events."
"Nothing else happened," the leader stated. "We did hug, but we were rudely interrupted by Mr. Ace Detective here."
"That's right," Yukari concurred.
"Aha!" Junpei snapped his fingers. "So, if you were allowed to continue, are you saying you both would've gone further?"
Aigis tilted her head, her eyes glowing faintly as if processing Junpei's question. "Logical deduction: further actions may have included increased physical contact or verbal affirmations of emotional connection."
Makoto sighed, crossing his arms. "Junpei, stop twisting things. Nothing else was going to happen. It was just a hug."
Yukari folded her arms, her face still slightly red. "Exactly. A harmless hug. You're blowing this way out of proportion, as usual."
Junpei wagged his finger like a cartoon detective. "Oh no, no, no. You two just admitted something juicy. If I hadn't shown up, who knows what kind of lovey-dovey stuff would've gone down." He grinned. "C'mon, admit it. The leader and Yukari-chan, alone on a beach, under the stars? Sparks were flying, weren't they?"
Aigis's gaze shifted between Makoto and Yukari. "Analyzing situation. Probability of romantic tension: 89%. Additional variables required for a conclusive assessment. Yukari-chan, you're not telling me what I want to know. If you continue to play me for a fool, I will resort to drastic measures."
Even Junpei was afraid to find out what the automaton meant.
"I call your bluff," Yukari challenged. "You can't do anything to me."
The smile that crept onto her lips sent shivers down the archer's spine. "Are you aware that I have different folders stored in my memory banks? One of these folders is labeled, 'Puns for Every Occasion.' Shall I access them?"
Yukari narrowed her eyes. "You wouldn't dare."
She stepped forward, invading Yukari's personal space.
"Challenge accepted. Commencing Pun Protocol. Query: Romantic tension. Initiating first pun."
Yukari blanched. "Wait, no, I take it back! I'll comply!"
"Yukari-chan," Aigis began, her voice unflinching, "your resistance to these questions is quite beachy behavior. Do you feel a wave of guilt washing over you yet?"
Yukari recoiled as if physically struck. "Stop! Please!"
Ignoring the plea, Aigis continued, her tone merciless. "Perhaps your reluctance to answer stems from being shore of your feelings. Or are you simply tide of denying the truth?"
"I surrender!" Yukari pleaded with the blonde. "Please, no more."
Aigis nodded, a triumphant smile on her face. "Pun Protocol deactivated. Compliance achieved."
Junpei exhaled dramatically, wiping fake sweat from his brow. "Man, that was brutal. You're scarier than the Shadows, Ai-chan."
Aigis turned her gaze to him, her face unreadable. "Junpei-kun, I assure you, there are separate folders for battle-related puns."
Junpei paled. "I'll behave! I swear!"
Meanwhile, the others observed the scene with a mix of amusement and secondhand dread.
Mitsuru, ever the composed leader, raised an eyebrow at the absurdity unfolding before her. Deciding it wasn't worth the headache, she returned to her tea, savoring its refreshing aroma. "Honestly, I don't know how they have the energy for this," she murmured to herself, taking a serene sip.
Akihiko and Ken weren't as composed. It was funny the first five minutes. Now, the relentless barrage of puns brought painful memories of a certain bespectacled man who had once turned their lives into a cringe-worthy nightmare of wordplay. Akihiko groaned, pressing his hands to his temples. "This is giving me flashbacks. Horrible flashbacks."
Ken, wincing at every pun, nodded. "I thought we were done with this… but apparently, the nightmare continues."
Fuuka, sitting cross-legged with Koromaru at her side, gave the boxer and his protégé a sympathetic smile. "It's not so bad," she said gently, scratching behind Koromaru's ears. "Besides, it's nice to see everyone getting along again. This kind of chaos… it feels like home."
Koromaru barked in agreement, wagging his tail as his sharp eyes darted between the bickering quartet.
As Yukari continued her half-hearted protests, Junpei defended his role as instigator, Aigis prepared another folder of witty quips, and Makoto quietly tried to contain the chaos, the dorm once again felt alive in a way only this group could create.
It was absurd. It was loud. But in its own way, it was perfect. For all its chaos and quirks, it was the kind of harmony they had all fought so hard to protect. This was SEES. This was home.
Next time, the final Arcana - the Universe Arcana.
