Hello everyone, first I just want to say thank you so much for your kind and wonderful reviews. It really means so much to me that you all love the first chapter to my new story, and I am truly grateful for it. I am still trying my best to respond to all your PMs and other people's reviews as much as I can, because I want to be able to answer your questions and get your input as much as possible. So, before I get into the actual events of the first game, I wanted this chapter to help establish where Diana starts off since at this point, she is currently loyal to Superman and is second in command of the Regime. It's important to keep in mind that this is just my own interpretation of the Injustice series. I'm making sure I stay true to the source material while also taking the story in a different direction. It will still have the same plotline of the first two games, but throughout each chapter things will slowly change as I continue writing it to differentiate as much as possible so that way my Injustice fanfiction is its own thing just like how the original game is its own thing. Now without further ado please enjoy this new chapter of my story.
CHAPTER 2: EARTH-49
Metropolis
Diana looked over Metropolis. So much has changed over the last five years ever since that dark day. When Batman's arch nemesis the Joker planted a nuclear bomb in the city and tricked Superman into killing his pregnant wife, Lois Lane. She still remembers it like it was yesterday. Diana remembered when Batman sent an urgent message calling all Justice League members to help Superman locate his missing wife. Everything escalated so quickly when it happened. Diana had managed to help Kal locate where his wife was being held captive, but they never anticipated what would happen next. Superman had rushed in to save Lois, but this was part of Joker's plan. He used Scarecrow's fear toxin laced with kryptonite to trick the Man of Steel into thinking he was fighting Doomsday when in reality it was Lois. To make matters worse, Lois' heart was linked to the bomb and the moment her heart stopped beating it set off the nuke, causing it to detonate in Metropolis, killing everyone and wiping out the entire city. By the time Superman realized what he had done it was too late. The woman he loved was gone. Not only did he lose Lois, but he also lost his unborn child.
Wonder Woman could not believe how everything fell apart in a matter of seconds on that day. What truly broke her was seeing Kal descend from the sky holding the body of his deceased wife. Diana was devastated seeing her friend emotionally broken. She knew Lois meant everything to him. Even though Diana didn't have many interactions with her in the past, the times she spent getting to know Lois is something she still cherishes to this day. Diana could tell Lois was an amazing woman, she was enthusiastic, intelligent, very out spoken, and a genuinely kind. These are things that made Diana truly admire Lois Lane as a person, especially when she first arrived in Man's World. When Diana first left Themyscira years ago she was still trying to understand Man's World and adapt to its environments. And although she was a quick learner, Diana didn't quite have everything figured out since Man's World was still new to her at the time. But thankfully after meeting people like Kal and Lois it became more easier for Diana to adjust to Man's World. Diana was grateful that she made friends along way. Despite everything that's happened Diana still wishes she could've gotten to know Lois more. Wonder Woman didn't just see Lois as a friend, in many ways she saw her as a sister, someone worthy to be called an Amazon. If it were up to Diana, she would've made Lois an honorary Amazon on Themyscira.
She knows her mother and sisters would never approve since Lois is from Man's World, but to Diana that doesn't matter, because in her mind Lois is worthy to be called an Amazon. If things had turned out different, Diana could've convinced her fellow Amazons to welcome Lois into Themyscira and live among them. But sadly, Diana will never get to see that, because of the loss of her friend. Because of the Joker, Lois was gone, and Superman was broken. What happened next would change everything. Diana still remembers it like it was yesterday. She tried to comfort Kal in his moment of grief, but it was no use. Superman's face was filled with anger, gone was the hope and humanity within in him. All Diana saw in Kal was hate and vengeance. It wasn't just the change in his facial expression that scared her. What really scared Diana was the look in Superman's eyes. It was like seeing a completely different person. Diana knew that something changed inside Kal-El that day. Something deep inside him snapped. Diana remembers when Superman asked her where the Joker was. The moment Wonder Woman told Kal that Batman took him into custody for interrogation, that's when Diana knew where this was going. She once again tried to calm Superman down and maybe talk some sense into him, but Kal wasn't listening. Superman put Lois' body down and flew incredibly fast, leaving Diana alone in the remains of Metropolis. Diana quickly realized where he was going and tried to contact Batman to warn him. However, by the time she informed Bruce it was too late. When Diana found out what Superman had done, it shocked her beyond belief.
Superman, the Man of Steel, leader of the Justice League killed the Joker with his bare hands. Her friend had taken a life as revenge for the loss of his wife and unborn child. How did it come to this? It just didn't make sense to Diana. Superman wasn't a murderer, he would never do something like this. Diana didn't want to believe it, it couldn't be true. She tried to convince herself that they were just lies and rumors, but her disbelief would be completely shattered the moment they were proven true when Batman confirmed he saw the whole thing happen. Diana immediately searched everywhere to find Kal from the Watchtower to his home back in Smallville, but to no avail. It was only when Diana searched the Fortress of Solitude that she found Superman. There was still a part of her that didn't want to believe what she heard from Bruce, but as soon as Wonder Woman saw blood on Superman's left hand that's when she finally, accepted the truth. It was a moment that still stuck with Diana even after all these years. No matter how hard she tries to get the image out of her head, the memory still remained.
"Hera, even after five years that day still haunts me." Diana thought to herself
Wonder Woman became so lost in thought that she didn't hear someone approach her.
"Diana." Hawkgirl said
Diana quickly came back to her senses and saw Shayera walk towards her.
"Shayera, forgive me I didn't know you were there." Diana said sincerely
"It's alright, I just wanted to make sure you were okay." Shayera said
Wonder Woman couldn't help but smile, she was grateful to have a friend like Hawkgirl.
"Yes, I am now, thank you." Diana said
"No problem, something on your mind." Shayera replied
Diana didn't want to worry her friend, but she decided to be honest with Shayera since she did not want to keep secrets from her.
"I've been thinking a lot recently, with everything that's happened in the last five years. So much has changed since then." Diana said
Hawkgirl didn't expect that response, but she continued the conversation.
"Yeah, it sure has. Everything's different now even after all this time." Shayera said
"Do you ever wonder what life could've like if…?" Diana hesitated to finish her sentence
"If what?" Shayera asked
"If things were different back then compared to now." Diana replied
"Are you talking about what the world would be like if the Regime didn't exist." Shayera asked
"Not necessarily what I meant." Diana said
"Then what do you mean?" Shayera asked now actually curious
"'I'm referring to what the world would be like if Joker hadn't kidnapped Lois, or blown-up Metropolis, or trick Superman into Killing her. Maybe things could've been different." Diana explained
Shayera immediately put together where this was going. This wasn't an easy topic to discuss since everyone has been affected by that day in some way. Hawkgirl still remembered how she felt when learning about the destruction of Metropolis. Like everyone else, it affected her emotionally too and she couldn't understand why this happened. But one thing was clear that after that tragic day, everything changed forever. Superman took matters into his own hands and formed the Regime. During that same time Shayera joined the Regime, just like Diana did, because she wanted to help Superman bring order to the world. It became clear to her that if the law wasn't going to do anything about it then the Regime will. Ever since then Hawkgirl had devoted her life to help make the world a safer and better place to live in. Even after five years later Shayera never once regretted her decision of joining the Regime, because she truly believed it was the right thing to do.
"I can understand what you mean Diana, but there's nothing we can do to change the past. We've already come so far in the last five years since the tragedy. The Regime made this world safer and, because of that we eliminated all crime. We achieved what the law couldn't do." Shayera explained
Diana knew Shayera meant well, but a part of her felt like she didn't fully understand the point she was making. Despite all of that Diana was still grateful for Shayera taking the time to understand her.
"Maybe you're right, thank you Shayera. I'm grateful to have you as my friend." Diana said
Shayera couldn't help but smile from Diana's response. They may not always agree with each other, but deep down Shayera is thankful to have Diana as her friend. She knows that no matter what they'll always be there for each other.
"You're welcome, Diana, I'm glad to have you as my friend too." Shayera said
In that same moment Diana received an incoming transmission from Yellow Lantern. She quickly answered her earpiece.
"What is it, Hal?" Diana asked
"Diana, you and Shayera are needed at the Watchtower." Hal said
"Is something wrong?" Diana asked curiously
"No nothing's wrong, Superman just asked me to contact you, because he wants to have an important meeting there. He's requesting everyone attend." Hal explained
"A meeting, it must be serious if everyone is attending." Diana replied.
"Yeah, I guess so. Anyway, I just wanted to give you the heads up. I'll meet you there." Hal said
"Thanks Hal, I appreciate it, see you soon, Wonder Woman out." Diana said as she ended the transmission.
Hawkgirl didn't hesitate to say something after the transmission.
"Looks like we better get going if we don't want to be late." Shayera said
"I agree, let's go." Diana said
The two then flew away from Metropolis as they made their way to the Watchtower.
WATCHTOWER
Above the Earth stood the Watchtower. Originally, built and founded by the Justice League, but has now become one of the Regime's main headquarters. Throughout the pass five years Superman used the Watchtower to monitor the Earth while also hold meetings with the whole Regime. Every meeting focused on the status of what was going on in the world whether it involved politics, war, criminal activity, emergency situations, or anything that could pose as a potential threat in the future if not dealt with. Aside from that the meetings also discussed strategies on dealing with The Insurgency. Ever since Clark founded the Regime, there were those that tried oppose his One Earth Government, specifically, Batman and The Insurgency. After the destruction of Metropolis, Superman waged war against Batman since he now saw him as an enemy of the Regime. In retaliation Batman formed The Insurgency as a way to fight back against the One Earth Government. Many were quick to join Bruce's side, which culminated in a lot of conflicts and confrontation between both the Regime and The Insurgency. Clark had made it his goal to not only eliminate The Insurgency, but to also destroy Batman as he believed that without him The Insurgency would fall. Even after five years Superman continues to hunt down Batman and The Insurgency to this day and will not stop until he succeeds in wiping them all out.
Superman stood in the observation deck of the Watchtower. Looking at the Earth with a perfect view from behind the glass window. Whenever he needed time for himself to think things over he would go here where he felt at peace the most. A place that was both quiet and calm. As Superman watched over the planet below he reminisce about how his life forever changed the moment he first came to this world. Even after all these years Clark could still remember bits and pieces of when he first arrived on Earth. Despite being sent as a baby, he had a very good memory when recalling certain moments of his life. Clark remembers when he opened his eyes and saw his adoptive mother Martha Kent for the first time. He remembers how she held him in her arms after finding the ship that brought him to Earth. Clark also recalls when he saw his adoptive father Jonathon Kent for the first time. He still remembers when he reached out to him with his little arms and then Jonathon took him in his arms and held baby Clark. Those memories are something that always stayed with Clark after all these years because it showed how despite being from another world, his adoptive parents loved him unconditionally. And most importantly Clark loved his adoptive parents too because they were his family. Without Jonathon and Martha, Clark would've never learned what it means to be human and that is something he is forever grateful for.
Superman was then approached by Yellow Lantern. Clark stopped looking at the Earth and then turn his attention to Hal.
"What it is Hal?" Clark asked
"Everyone's here, they're all in the conference room waiting for you." Hal said
"Good, then let's get started." Clark replied
Hal nodded and the two made their way to the conference room. After a minute of walking to the upper levels they made it to where the meeting was being held. Clark and Hal saw everyone present. While a majority of the Regime consisted of heroes, the other half included notorious villains that the Justice League has faced in the past. Superman knew a long time ago that in order for the Regime to succeed you need to recruit the best people suited for the One Earth Government. It wasn't just about having the most competent superheroes, it was also about having the most effective villains too. People that Clark could personally trust when the situation requires it in order to get the job done. As Superman and Yellow Lantern sat in their respective seats, everyone else remained quiet until they were allowed to speak. Clark took a quick glance of all the members present for the meeting. On the left side there were the villains that he recruited in the past five years such as Black Adam, Killer Frost, Sinestro, Solomon Grundy, Catwoman, and Bane. Then on the right side were the heroes that supported him from the very beginning, consisting of The Flash, Yellow Lantern, Shazam, Cyborg, Raven, Aquaman, Nightwing, Hawkgirl, and finally, Wonder Woman.
With everyone accounted for the meeting, Superman began discussing a list of topics that he wants to address right now.
"Thank you all for coming today, I called this meeting for one important reason. Over the last five years the Regime has kept this world safe in order to preserve peace and security. But over time our government has faced many Resistance Groups that try to tear down what we've built. But no more, that is why our main objective is to hunt down what remains of The Insurgency and eliminate their leader Batman." Superman explained
There was a little silence in the room. Everyone could tell Superman was serious and nobody was going to question his authority. Out of all the Resistance Groups that the Regime fought it was The Insurgency that posed the biggest threat. With Batman as its leader The Insurgency has manage to outlast every other Rebellion that has tried to fight back against the Regime. The only other group that hasn't been taken out was the Joker Clan. A group of criminals that use to work for The Joker and to this day remain loyal even after Superman killed him. From they know, the Joker Clan has mostly been under the command of Harley Quinn. There's also been rumors going around suggesting that the Joker Clan has formed an alliance with The Insurgency in order to strengthen their numbers. If this is true then it makes sense on why Superman wants to destroy them before it's too late.
"I know it sounds like a lot but rest assured if we work together then we can end this conflict with The Insurgency and finally, maintain a peaceful world." Superman said
During the meeting Wonder Woman paid close attention. Diana knew how important the Regime was to Kal and that is why she joined in the first place. To help establish peace in Man's World. Wonder Woman truly believed in the Regime's cause and would do whatever it takes to bring order and justice to the world. Diana had been Kal's biggest supporter since the very beginning and it's why he made her second in command of the Regime. Out of all the members of the Regime, Wonder Woman was the person Superman trusted the most. Even after everything they've been through together in the last five years, Diana was the one person Kal could count on the most. It's that trust and dynamic relationship that helps motivate the Regime to continue to do better and bring order to the world. As Diana kept listening to the discussion at hand, Superman turned his attention to one of the heroes on her side.
"Cyborg, any updates?" Clark asked
Cyborg didn't hesitate to respond to Superman's question.
"I've tried to hack into every known security system connected to Wayne Enterprises as well as Batman Incorporated which all link to The Insurgency. The problem is that somehow Batman is able to lock me out of the system every time I gain access to it. Not only that, but whenever I try to reboot the hacking, I can't regain access a second time since Bruce found a way to disconnect me from it the first time I hacked into it. I've also tried to reroute all Wayne Tech Satellites in order to pin point every possible location he could hiding in. But just like with the security systems Batman has somehow manage to prevent me from gaining access. Right now, I'm trying to find any other alternatives that will allow me to have full control of his security systems and satellites without being locked out. It's still a work in progress, but as of right now, I can't track down Batman or The Insurgency itself." Cyborg explained
Superman wasn't pleased to hear that, but he couldn't blame Cyborg. Despite Victor's best efforts, Bruce always had the upper hand when it came to the technical side of things. Something that Clark knew all too well back then when they were the Justice League. He even recalls the time Bruce manage to overpower Cyborg by planting a virus in his systems. What nobody knew back then was that Batman uploaded the program the day Victor first met him years ago. This is how Bruce was able to immobilize Cyborg in Arkham Asylum when Superman and the others tried to relocate the inmates to parts unknown. Ever since then Superman along with Cyborg have been trying nonstop to use any strategies in order to gain the advantage over Batman in the hopes of taking both him and The Insurgency down.
"It's alright Victor, we'll keep trying until we get results. Sooner or later Bruce will make a mistake and when he does that's when we strike." Clark said
Cyborg nodded as he understood how important this task was for Superman. Clark then turned his attention to the villains to see if they have anything to report on the matter.
"Selina how about you?" Clark asked
Diana could tell that Selina was a little startled when Kal spoke to her specifically. After the formation of Regime Catwoman originally was on Batman's side and was a member of The Insurgency. However, at one point Selina left Bruce and decided to join the Regime. Diana had no idea why Selina chose to switch sides in the first place after she spent so much time trying to fight the Regime. From what she remembers Catwoman begged Superman to let her join the Regime not out of any moral obligation, but out of fear. It became clear to Wonder Woman that Selina did not actually care about the Regime's cause and was only doing this for own survival in order to stay alive. But apparently that's not the only reason she did this. As Diana would later find out that Selina pleaded with Kal in the hopes that in exchange for her joining the Regime, Superman wouldn't harm Batman as she wanted to protect him. Despite how ridiculous this deal was, it was enough to convince Superman to let Catwoman join the Regime. But regardless of her reason for switching sides it wouldn't make any real difference since Diana knew deep down that Kal still had every intention to destroy Bruce by any means necessary. Batman is public enemy number one and it's up to the Regime to take him down.
"I haven't been able to get any intel on Bruce or The Insurgency. Most of the inmates I interrogated at Stryker's Island refuse to cooperate. I've listed every prisoner that has connections to the Joker Clan or The Insurgency and yet none of them will surrender any important information. They're either too stubborn to talk or too loyal to say anything that might betray Batman. My only guess is that Brucey must've paid them off somehow and why we're no close to finding him yet." Selina explained
This also displeased Superman, because if there's one thing he hated about Batman it was his ability to pull strings from behind the scenes to stay one step ahead of the game.
"Why am I not surprised, Bruce always knew how to keep people quiet." Clark said with dissatisfaction in his voice
"Supes sweety, you and I both know that Bats has been doing this long before he ever joined your little team of super friends." Selina replied
Clark knew Selina was right. Even before joining the Justice League Bruce had been doing stuff like this for years and to this day he continues to use those same tactics. The only difference is that the whole world now knows who Batman is and yet even with his identity exposed people are still willing to protect him rather than turn him in to the Regime.
"Which is why we need to keep interrogating those inmates until they tell us what we need to know. For every second they don't talk, The Insurgency grows more stronger with its numbers now that the Joker Clan has formed an alliance with them. Do I make myself clear?" Clark explained in a serious tone of voice
Not wanting to get on his bad side Selina nodded understanding her assignment.
"Thank Athena." Diana thought to herself
While Diana doesn't consider Selina her friend she does sometimes worry for her safety. Diana knows Selina can take care of herself that which is clear, but Catwoman's reckless behavior has almost gotten her into trouble in the past. Especially, when it came to how she interacted with other members of the Regime. Although Wonder Woman and Catwoman don't see eye to eye she does try her best to help keep Selina out of trouble as much as possible. Now she understands how Batman felt when dealing with her.
Diana could tell by Kal's facial expression that this meeting wasn't going the way he hoped it would. She felt bad for him given how he takes his work very seriously when it comes to the Regime. After Superman finished talking to Catwoman he turned his attention back the hero's side. Only this time he was looking in Diana's direction as he made eye contact with her. Diana knew at some point Kal would speak to her during the meeting, she just didn't expect it to happen so quickly.
"Diana maybe you can shed some light on this matter." Superman said
Diana didn't hesitate to respond and began speaking.
"Based on what Cyborg and Catwoman shared it's clear that Batman is planning something. By keeping us in the dark he's buying himself time in order to set up his next move. The real issue is finding out what he's planning." Diana said
While it wasn't the response Superman wanted to hear he was willing to let Diana continue with what she had to say.
"Please continue?" Superman asked
Diana nodded and continued speaking.
"After the recent break in at Lex Corp, I have a hunch that Batman is behind it." Diana said
"How can you be so sure?" Superman asked
Diana then pulled out a data pad that showed security footage from the previous night.
"This footage is from a backup security camera. The armed thugs who broke into the facility the previous night disabled the others but missed this one. And based on their attire it's obvious they're part of The Joker Clan." Diana explained
Despite hearing this information Superman was now calmer, especially since this could potentially lead to the whereabouts of Batman's current location.
"Do we have confirmation on what they stole?" Superman asked
"Yes, the security guards said that the armed thugs only stole schematics for a Mother Box. Everything else was untouched." Diana said
This confused Clark, why would The Joker Clan only steal schematics for a Mother Box? If Batman is somehow involved in this then he must need it for something important.
"And you're sure Batman is behind this?" Superman asked
"I'm positive, there's no way the armed thugs could've broken that easily without someone helping them. Batman must've somehow hacked into the security system which gave The Joker Clan the time they needed to steal the schematics. There's no doubt that he orchestrated the whole thing." Diana explained
Clark was now fully convinced. This is there only chance to track down Batman and The Insurgency, so now is the time to act. Clark took the data pad that Diana showed him and gave it took Victor.
"Cyborg, I need you to analyze this footage and see if you can find anything that can trace the armed thugs back to either The Joker Clan or lead us to Batman and The Insurgency." Superman said
"I'm on it Superman." Cyborg said as he immediately got to work
Superman then turned his attention to the rest of the members of the Regime.
"Alright, so far this is our only possible source, but once we have a lead on Batman's location we strike. Until then this meeting is adjourned. I want you all back to your stations. I'll contact you as soon as Cyborg notifies me on any leads." Superman said
As the meeting concluded everyone else began to leave the conference room. Diana was just about to exit with Shayera until she was stopped by a familiar voice.
"Diana wait." Superman said
Diana turned around and saw that it was Kal calling her. Diana then looked back at Shayera with an awkward smile. Not wanting to upset her friend Diana told Shayera she'll catch up with her later.
"You go ahead I'll meet up with you later Shayera." Diana said
Thankfully Shayera understood and nodded in response.
"Have fun princess." Shayera said with a smirk as she exited the conference room
Diana couldn't help but chuckle at that last sentence. Ever since Diana and Kal became an intimate couple Shayera would sometimes make jokes about Diana having romantic feelings for Kal. Shayera even once compared Diana and Kal's relationship to how people see fictional couples on TV soap operas. It was no secret that during the past five years Diana had developed feelings for Kal at some point after they formed the Regime. A part of her wasn't sure if she should pursue it, especially with everything Kal has been through after losing Lois. Diana didn't want to do anything that would hurt or upset Kal, because she cared about him, and she didn't want to risk destroying their friendship. However, her worries were put to rest after Kal began developing feelings for Diana too. Not only did Superman and Wonder Woman confess their feelings for each other but they began spending more time together when the two weren't on missions for the Regime. It was those moments that allowed both Diana and Kal to just be themselves and not worry about carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders.
Diana made her way towards Kal, and she saw how happy he was to be alone with her. His soft smile warmed her heart, because it reminded Diana that deep down Kal wasn't some general of the Regime. He was just a man, a man who had been through so much in life and just wanted to do the right thing even after all the pain he experienced. That's the Kal-El Diana knew deep down, and nothing was ever going to change that.
Kal placed his hands around Diana's waist as she wrapped her arms around his neck. They stare in each other's eyes for a minute until Kal closed the gap between the two and kissed Diana on the lips. Diana returned the kiss and savored every second of it. Once the kissed ended the two just looked at each other not wanting to leave from the embrace they were in.
"I miss seeing you." Kal said
"I do to." Diana said
"I'm tired of all of this. I'm tired of this war, this endless fighting, all of it. I want nothing more than to put an end to this war and have the chance to spend the rest of my life with you Diana." Kal said
"That's why we're here Kal, to end it so that we can finally, live our lives together." Diana said
Kal caressed Diana's cheek admiring the beauty of the Amazon before him, he was truly lucky to have Diana in his life.
"She is my world. I can't lose Diana, I won't let that happen. She means everything to me, and I will do whatever it takes to protect her and put an end to this war. Batman's Insurgency will fall, and the Regime will prevail. That is a promise I intend to keep." Kal thought to himself
Not wanting to overthink everything Superman looked into Diana's eyes and gave a warm smile which made her blush.
"I love you." Kal said
This was the man she knew. The man Diana fell in love with. She knew that Kal will always be there for her no matter what.
"I love you." Diana replied
Diana rested her head on Kal's chest as he hugged her in his arms. They didn't want this moment to end, they wanted it to last forever, but the two knew they couldn't stay here for long. Diana and Kal just savored every second embracing each other until it was time to leave.
Insurgency Headquarters (Undisclosed Location)
Batman was sitting in front of a big computer monitor. He was overlooking all the territories that under the control of the Regime. So far this been his only means of know what's currently going on in the world. Bruce is lucky that he's been able to maintain this routine every day, especially with all the security systems and Wayne Tech Satellites that he still has access to in order to keep track of the Regime while avoiding them. Ever since Superman exposed his identity to the whole world years ago Batman had to go underground and keep a low profile. Bruce couldn't risk endangering his friends and family while the Regime was hunting him so this was the only way he could protect them without putting them in danger. After some time, past Batman decided if he was going to take on Superman and the Regime he needed to assemble an army to oppose them. People he could rally to his cause in order to fight back against Clark and the others who joined his One Earth Government.
Thankfully, Batman was able to recruit a lot of heroes to his side and after gaining the support he needed this gave him the motivation to establish a name for his rebellion, The Insurgency. All of the heroes that joined The Insurgency were either allies of the Justice League or members of the Bat-Family that consisted of Catwoman, Huntress, Black Canary, Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, Nightwing, Atom, Black Lightning, and Batwoman. They were all against Superman and his Regime because they saw the One Earth Government for what it truly is. An evil dictatorship that brings nothing but pain, suffering, and oppression around the world. Those heroes knew that if they want to stop Superman's reign of terror they would have to join forces with Batman and fight back against the One Earth Government in order to restore peace. And no matter what they would help Batman every step of the way because they trust Bruce and they believe in The Insurgency.
In the five years leading up to where they are now, The Insurgency would face many struggles along the way. The battles they fought sometimes would either end in victory for them or end in disaster depending on the situation. Even when it seemed like things were going according to plan for Batman and The Insurgency there would be moments where that isn't always be the case. The worst part isn't there plans backfiring on them, it's not being able to protect those you want to keep safe and out of harms way. As time progressed, members of The Insurgency would begin to dwindle either, because they chose to leave or the result of one of them being killed in the process resulting in the rest of the group feeling nothing but pain and guilt. Oliver Queen died at the hands of Superman during a mission where Batman and the others tried to infiltrate the Fortress of Solitude to steal the 5-U-93-R. A Kryptonian nanotech drug created by Superman and Lex Luthor by using Kryptonian technology. The pill is designed to enhance the strength and durability of non-superpowered troops in the Regime allowing them to survive their injuries while facing other meta humans in combat. Bruce thought that if he could steal one of the pills he could analyze it and find a way to synthesize the drug in order to create his own for The Insurgency. Unfortunately, his mission to getting the pill would come back to haunt him as he still remembers how it got Green Arrow killed in the first place.
When Batman and The Insurgency reached the Fortress of Solitude they discovered that Jonathan and Martha Kent were there. Bruce knew this wasn't good, because while this was going on they had to create a diversion that would keep Superman distracted long enough for them to break into the Fortress and steal the pill without being detected. However, after not knowing that Clark's parents were also there the plan completely fell apart and Batman had to call it off before it was too late. Bruce knew that if Superman discovered his team at the Fortress he will assume they have come for his parents and Superman will respond with lethal force. By the time Batman told everyone to retreat it was too late, Superman had arrived at the Fortress and immediately began to attack. Captain Atom quickly manages to hold him off under the orders of the US Pentagon and to give the others enough time to escape. While this was going on Green Arrow accidentally got separated from the group resulting in him being unable to escape the Fortress due to the rubble blocking the exit. Before Batman and the others got away Oliver managed to steal one of the pills and place it on a single arrow giving him enough time to send it out the Fortress without Superman noticing. Black Canary quickly grabbed the arrow that had the pill attached to it and gave it to Batman before they lost it. Dinah didn't want to abandon Oliver, she desperately wanted to go back and save him before Superman could kill him. But before she could rescue Oliver it was too late, Superman beat him to death with his bare hands. Dinah knew there was nothing she could do, the man she loved was gone and they had to leave before she, Batman, and The Insurgency get captured. Both Green Arrow and Captain Atom died that day and Batman still blames himself for what happened. To this day Bruce still wishes he could've saved them and stop Superman from murdering them both.
"Ollie, Nathan I'm so sorry for everything. I never should've left you there. I should've been there to save you. It's my fault you're both dead. If I wasn't so focused on stopping Clark you both would still be alive. Ollie, Nathan where ever you are I promise you I won't you again. I won't let anyone else die, because of me ever again. I'm going to make sure of that." Batman thought to himself
It wasn't just the deaths of Green Arrow and Captain Atom that he blamed himself for, he also held so much guilt for getting Nightwing and Huntress killed too. When Bruce and Dick tried to stop Superman and the others at Arkham Asylum Robin threw one of Nightwing's Batons at his head, which caused him to hit a rock on the floor instantly killing him. Batman was completely devastated that his own son Damian Wayne killed Dick Grayson, it was a moment that broke Bruce and continues to haunt him years later. Damian tried to explain that it was an accident, and he didn't mean to kill Dick, but Bruce wouldn't listen. After Nightwing's death Batman told Damian he wanted nothing to do with him, which further pushed Robin to join Superman's Regime in the first place. Damian believed in the Regime's cause and since Batman pushed him away he no longer saw Bruce as his father just his enemy. Ever since then Damian swore to take down Batman and destroy him no matter what since he was now fully convinced that Superman was more of a father then Bruce ever was.
After losing Dick Grayson tragedy would happen again in The Insurgency as Helena Bertinelli was killed by the Regime. During one battle Huntress was helping Batwoman fight off Wonder Woman, however during the struggle Diana used her Lasso of Truth and wrapped it around Helena's neck causing it to snap and quickly killing her. Bruce couldn't believe it, Diana had killed a member of the Bat-Family in cold blood. Batman felt lost when Helena died, because everyone he vowed to protect were being killed and no matter how hard he tried Bruce couldn't save them. Batman felt like he failed all of them, Oliver, Nathan, Dick, and Helena, which made him start to think that his mission to stop Superman was a lost cause. The death of Huntress really took a major toll on him and was conflicted after everything that's happened in the last five years.
What really bothers Batman is the fact that the people he once saw as his friends were now his enemies. One person in particular came to mind and it was Wonder Woman. After Diana killed Huntress, Bruce didn't know what to think of it. From the very beginning Wonder Woman had sided with Superman which not only led to the rise of the Regime, but also witnessing Diana's undying loyalty towards Clark. It just didn't make any sense. This wasn't the Diana Prince Bruce knew back then. The old Diana would've never joined Superman or do horrible things. The Diana he knew would've done everything in her power to stop Superman and bring peace back to the world not tyranny and oppression. Bruce tried to remain calm in that moment. He tried to think back to when he first met Wonder Woman all those years ago. Back when the Justice League was first founded by Superman. It all seemed so simple back then, Batman can still remember when Diana first introduced herself to him and how he was hesitant on getting to know her. But it was during that moment where he felt like for once he didn't have to just be Batman he could be himself as Bruce Wayne. It's day he still looks back on fondly even after all these years.
"I miss the people we use to be." Bruce thought to himself
FLASHBACK
After the Imperium was defeated the news media have been discussing the growing concerns of another invasion if the aliens ever decided to return to Earth. When Batman saw this news report he started thinking of how a future situation like this should be dealt with. That's when he came up with an idea that he wanted to share with Superman and the others. Without any hesitation he contacted Clark with the Bat-Computer.
"Hello?" Clark said
"Clark it's me Bruce." Bruce replied
"Bruce it's great to hear from you. What can I do for you?" Clark asked
"Gather the others I have something I want to show you all." Bruce said
"Sure, no problem, do you mind me asking what it is exactly?" Clark asked curiously
"Let's just say it's an answer to dealing with future alien invasions." Bruce said
"I see, well in that case I'll contact everyone else to meet up." Clark replied
"Thanks Clark I'm on my way there now." Bruce said
"Just one question, where is this thing located?" Clark asked
"Take a wild guess." Bruce said
ONE HOUR LATER
Clark thought he'd seen everything, but never in a million theaters he would see something big as this. The Watchtower was perhaps the biggest space station he had ever seen in his life. He can't imagine how long it must've taken to build something like this and have it be made specifically for space itself.
"Incredible, do your stockholders know about this Bruce?" Superman asked
"A line item hidden in the Aerospace R budget. This Watchtower will act as an early warning system detecting other threats of invasion from space." Batman explained
In that same moment the Flash and Wonder Woman enter the scene.
"And it has a fully stock kitchen. Ice Mocha?" Flash asked as he offer the beverage to Superman
"No thank you Barry." Superman said
Diana was enjoying her beverage she had never tried drinks before in Man's World and it was very delicious.
"Mmn they don't have these on Themyscira." Diana said
"Stick around princess I'll show you the ropes." Flash said
"Perhaps I will." Diana replied
Suddenly Green Lantern and Hawkgirl appear too.
"An impressive installation, most impressive, but what's it got to do with us?" Green Lantern asked
Superman quickly answered Hal's question.
"I'm glad you asked Hal, I once thought I could protect the world by myself, but I was wrong. Working together we saved the planet and I believe that if we stay together as a team we would be a force that could truly work the ideals of peace and justice." Superman explained
While Barry clearly understood what Superman meant and liked the idea of working together as a team he couldn't help but reply with a funny comment.
"What like a bunch of Super Friends?" Flash asked
"More like a Justice League." Superman said
"Do you have any idea how corny that sounds? But maybe the big guy is right. With all of us behind it I think it just might work. Count me in." Flash explained
"Me too." Green Lantern said
"And me." Hawkgirl said
Wonder Woman at first was hesitant since she wasn't entirely sure if this was something her mother or sisters would approve. Ever since she left Themyscira Diana knew that she could never return to her home, because she would be breaking Amazon law. It broke her heart to leave the island even when she wanted nothing more than to save the world. Part of her wonders if she made the right choice or not. However, after everything that's happened recently and all the people she saved in the process in Man's World Diana started thinking that maybe in the end she did make the right decision. If Diana had not left Themyscira who knows how what could've happened if she did not help the others stop the alien invasion. Who would she be if she had stayed on the island. In that moment Diana knew in her heart she did the right thing. She only hopes that in time her mother will forgive her for leaving Themyscira. Maybe one day she will be reunited with her mother and Amazon sisters. Until that day comes, this was her home now and this was her mission. To save the world.
"My mother would not approve, but I find Man's World to be intriguing. I'll gladly join." Wonder Woman said
Superman was glad seeing the others join the Justice League. There was still one more person that hasn't decided yet. He then turned his attention to Batman.
"What about you Batman?" Superman asked
"I'm not really a people person. But when you need help and you will, call me." Batman said
"Understood. Then we're all agreed." Superman said
Diana then noticed one person was missing during this whole conversation.
"Wait J'onn's not here." Wonder Woman said
"Yeah where is he?" Flash asked
Superman spotted J'onn on one of the upper levels and flew towards him to make sure he's alright.
"J'onn are you alright?" Superman asked
"My family and loved ones are long gone. I am the last of my kind." Martian Manhunter said
Hearing those words broke Clark's heart. He knew what it was like to be the last of his kind. While the circumstances of J'onn and Clark's situations are different given that J'onn lived through that experience of his world being taken away from him while Clark escaped his dying world as a baby it doesn't change the fact that they are both sole survivors of worlds long gone. Clark placed his right hand on J'onn's shoulder to help comfort him in his time of grief. To let him know that he's not alone and remind him that no matter what he and everyone else will always be there for him. The Justice League may not be the family he wanted, but they're the family he needs.
"I know the feeling." Superman said
"Mars is dead, and I am alone in the universe." Martian Manhunter said
"J'onn we can never replace the family you lost, but we'd be honored if you could learn to call Earth your home." Superman said giving him a warm smile
In that moment J'onn smiled, he was grateful that someone like Superman was able to help lift his spirits. His genuine kindness and compassion for others reminded J'onn that there are people in the universe who truly care about him. J'onn couldn't be more happy to have found a new world to call home. The love for his family will always live forever in his heart, but he must move forward and keep their memory alive by helping others for the rest of his life. This was J'onn's mission, and he was glad knowing he has people who will be there for him every step of the way on this new journey.
"Come on." Superman said as he led the Martian to the others
And thus was the birth of Justice League.
A few minutes later after everyone agreed to join the newly found Justice League Diana noticed Batman just looking at the Earth from one of the big glass windows. Out of everyone Diana got to know so far he was still the one person she didn't get to properly introduce herself to yet. Diana made her way towards him and politely made her introduction to him.
"Hi." Diana said
Bruce did not expect her to say hello to him, this completely caught him off guard, which was something he wasn't use to. Not wanting to sound rude Bruce responded kindly.
"Hi." Bruce said
"I never got a chance to properly introduce myself when we first met, but my name is Diana Prince and it's an honor to meet you." Diana said
"It's an honor to meet you too Diana." Bruce replied
Bruce didn't know why, but underneath his mask he was blushing. He couldn't understand why this was happening. It's not like he was nervous, but something about his interaction with Diana felt different this time. Where previously when he was fighting alongside her during the alien invasion Bruce was his usual self, but here it was the complete opposite. Now granted when he met Diana a few days ago he was completely blown away by what he saw. She wasn't just some meta human with incredible powers. Diana was a remarkable woman that showed sincere love and compassion to everyone around her. Despite her being a Princess and Amazon Warrior, it never changed who she was as a person. That's what made her stood out to him from everyone else and he admired that about Diana. Even though Bruce claimed earlier to not be a people person perhaps that wasn't entirely true. Being around Diana made him feel different and maybe that's a good thing. Maybe Batman didn't always have to put on the vigilante act, maybe for once he could just be himself, Bruce Wayne.
"What's your name?" Diana asked curiously
Batman then gave a soft smile and responded
"My name is Bruce Wayne." Bruce said
Diana smiled back.
"Bruce, I like that name." Diana said sincerely
Batman was blushing again, thankfully he had his mask on so that way Diana didn't noticed. The two then looked at the Earth and were amazed at the sight.
"It's so beautiful." Diana said
"Yes, it is." Bruce said
PRESENT
Batman's train of thought was interrupted by an incoming transmission call. Bruce did not hesitate to answer his earpiece.
"Hello." Batman said
"Bats, it's me Harleen, we got the schematics. Looks like your plan worked out better than I thought it would." Harleen
"Good job Quinn. I'll contact Luthor letting him know we have the last piece required for the device he's working on." Batman explained
"Sounds good to me Bats, see you soon. Harleen out." Harleen said
Batman knew this was their last chance to fix everything. Not just stopping Superman, but to also restore peace to this world. If Lex Luthor's calculations are correct then they'll be able to make contact with another universe and bring alternate version members of the Justice League to their world. For the sole purpose of saving this world before it's too late.
"It's time." Batman thought to himself
Hello everyone, I hope you all enjoyed chapter two of my Injustice fanfiction. As you can see I really took my time with this one, because I wanted to make sure I establish the world of Earth-49 while exploring the characters in this alternate universe. World building has been the main focus of chapter two and I like to think I did a decent job explaining everything that's currently happening before the events of the first game take place. Something I want to address is how both the games and prequel comics try to pair Superman and Wonder Woman as a couple and this is one of the things I don't really like. Part of the problem is that it doesn't work narratively within the context of the original plot. Having Clark be with Diana after losing Lois just feels wrong from a story perspective and that's why I decided to have this be the first thing I fix in my fanfiction. In my interpretation Diana and Clark's relationship is built on this false idea that they're in love when in reality it's all fabricated through their bad decisions and being blinded by what they have become. Diana is fully convinced that she is in love with Clark when really it's just a romanticized fantasy she's built in her head due to not realizing how far she's gone down the wrong path. With Clark it's a lot more complicated. While some part of him really loves Diana he can't bring himself to actually love Diana, because he cannot move on from Lois. What makes it even worse is that Clark doesn't see Diana for her, he only sees her as something that he thinks can give him what he lost. Clark only sees Diana as an object that will fill the empty void in his life since he's unwilling to let go of Lois. No matter how hard he tries Clark can't move on from losing Lois. I think this is a much better idea for my story, because it will be one of the key factors that will lead to Diana's path of redemption when we actually get there in the story. Plus, when I make WonderBat canon in my fanfiction that relationship will actually be more genuine since that is also another reason why I wanted to write this story in the first place. I hope you all enjoyed this chapter, and I can't wait to share more in the future soon. I will keep you posted and if you have any questions or suggestions please let me know in your reviews. Thank you and have a great day.
