Chapter 11: The Calm Before the Storm

The sun was beginning to set over the dusty Texas horizon as Hotch, JJ, Rossi, and Emily searched the area with determined urgency. The air was thick with tension, and every moment that passed without finding Derek only heightened the fear that gnawed at their insides. The unsub had taken him, and they had no idea where he had gone or what his next move was.

"Stay in contact, everyone," Hotch instructed, his voice calm but clipped. "Keep your eyes open. We don't know how much time we have before he moves Derek again."

JJ nodded, her brow furrowed with concern. She'd seen Penelope's distress, had seen her reaction to Derek's abduction, and she knew that Penelope wasn't in any condition to be dealing with this. But the team couldn't afford to lose focus.

"Emily, Rossi, let's fan out," Hotch continued, his eyes scanning the area. "We'll cover more ground that way. Stay in contact via radio."

As the team split up, Emily and Rossi headed toward the old, abandoned building nearby while JJ and Hotch searched the surrounding area. Each of them had the same goal in mind—find Derek. Time was running out, and with Penelope in labor, every second mattered.

Back in the room where they had left Penelope, Reid was beside her, trying to keep her calm while also managing the rapidly escalating situation. Penelope was curled up in a chair, gripping the arms as her body tensed with each contraction. She was breathing hard, trying not to cry out, but it was impossible. The pain was unbearable.

"Penelope," Reid said gently, kneeling in front of her. "I need to know—how many weeks pregnant are you?"

Penelope's face contorted with discomfort, but she managed to squeeze out the answer. "Thirty-one," she gasped between breaths. "Thirty-one weeks... but I didn't think I'd go into labor this early. It's too soon... I can't... not like this..."

Reid nodded, his expression serious but calm. "Okay, listen to me carefully. You're going to have this baby right here. We can't move you yet—it's too dangerous. But we'll make sure you and your baby are safe. I'll stay with you the whole time, I promise."

Penelope's heart pounded. She wanted to protest, to tell Reid that they had to get to a hospital, but she couldn't get the words out. The pain came in waves, and each time it hit, she was thrown into a world of dizzying discomfort and panic.

Reid steadied her, rubbing her shoulders, trying to focus her attention on his voice, on anything to keep her grounded. "I'm going to need you to stay calm. When the paramedics get here, they'll bring everything they need for a premature baby. But I need you to help me, okay? Focus on me."

Penelope nodded weakly, trying to steady her breath. The contractions were coming closer now, and she could feel her body working against her will.

"I'm scared, Reid," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "What if something goes wrong? What if I'm not strong enough?"

"You are strong," Reid said firmly, his voice calm and steady despite the chaos surrounding them. "You've been strong through everything, and you're going to get through this, too. Just focus on breathing for me, okay? In and out. We're going to take this one step at a time."

Penelope closed her eyes, focusing on the rhythm of her breath. She could feel the tension in her body, the overwhelming need to push, but she forced herself to listen to Reid. She couldn't lose control now—not when her baby needed her. Not when Derek needed her.

As each contraction came, she fought the urge to scream, clenching her fists as the pain seemed to intensify. Her head swam with a mix of fear and exhaustion, but Reid was there, his presence steady and reassuring. He had been her friend for so long, and now, he was the one she had to rely on.

Outside, Hotch, JJ, Emily, and Rossi were still scouring the area, each of them coming up with nothing. The unsub had covered his tracks well, and they had no clues as to where Derek had been taken. Time was slipping away, and as much as they wanted to focus on Penelope, they knew they had to find Derek before it was too late.

"Rossi, Emily," Hotch called over the radio, his voice tight. "Any luck?"

"We're checking every room," Rossi responded, his voice low. "Nothing so far. We're not giving up."

"We'll find him," Emily added, her voice full of quiet determination. "We just have to keep looking."

JJ remained quiet, her thoughts with Penelope. She knew that time was critical. Her best friend, her teammate, was in labor, and Derek—her partner in all of this—was missing. The weight of everything was starting to hit her hard. She couldn't help but think of how far they had come—how much they had all been through—and how much more they had yet to face.

"JJ, you okay?" Hotch's voice brought her out of her thoughts.

She blinked, pulling herself together. "Yeah. Just… worried. About everything."

Hotch didn't say anything at first, but his face softened. "I know. We'll get through this. We always do."

Back in the room, Reid kept talking to Penelope, his voice a lifeline for her as she fought through the pain.

"Penelope, the contractions are getting closer now," Reid said softly, keeping his tone even and measured. "It's okay. I need you to focus on breathing. In and out, slow and steady. You're doing great."

Penelope clenched her jaw, feeling another wave of pain wash over her. She couldn't help the sharp intake of breath, the way her body tensed involuntarily.

"I can't do this, Reid," she whimpered. "It hurts so much."

"You're doing it, Penelope," Reid said firmly, though his heart ached seeing her in so much pain. "One step at a time. I know it's hard, but you're so much stronger than you think."

She nodded weakly, her grip on his hand tightening.

The sound of a door opening broke the momentary silence. Reid looked up, relieved to see the paramedics rushing in with their equipment. They wasted no time, quickly setting up the necessary tools and preparing to help deliver the baby. But Reid didn't leave Penelope's side.

"You're almost there," he said softly, keeping his hand on hers. "Stay with me. The paramedics are here, and we're going to get you to the hospital as soon as possible. But right now, we need to get this baby out safely."

Penelope nodded, her eyes welling with tears as she felt the pressure build. "I'm scared, Reid."

"I know you are," Reid said, his voice soft but steady. "But you're not alone. We're all here for you."

Outside, the sound of footsteps grew louder as Hotch, JJ, Emily, and Rossi made their way back to the hotel room. They had found no trace of Derek. It was as if the unsub had vanished without a trace, but they couldn't give up. Not now. Not when Penelope and her baby needed them.

"Where's Penelope?" JJ asked, her heart in her throat.

Reid met them at the door, his face a mixture of concern and relief. "She's in labor. We couldn't move her, so we're doing everything we can here until the paramedics get her stabilized. She's doing okay, but the baby's coming fast."

"How is she?" Hotch asked, his voice low, filled with concern.

"She's scared," Reid said quietly. "But she's tough. She's handling it better than I expected. We just need to make sure the baby arrives safely."

JJ took a deep breath, her face pale with worry. "And Derek?"

Reid shook his head. "Still no word. We have to find him. But for now, Penelope and the baby are our priority."

As the team regrouped and prepared to search for Derek again, Reid stayed close to Penelope, his calm presence a steadying force as she went through the most painful experience of her life. With each contraction, Penelope squeezed his hand, fighting against the fear that surged through her.

She couldn't lose her baby. Not like this.

"Reid… please…" she whispered, her voice breaking. "I can't… I can't do this alone."

"You're not alone, Penelope," Reid said gently. "We're all here. You've got this. You're stronger than you think. We're going to make sure you and your baby are safe."

Outside, as the shadows grew longer and the team continued their search, no one could have predicted just how much more they would need to face. But for now, it was all about getting Penelope through the labor, keeping her calm, and praying for the safe arrival of the baby.

And, of course, getting Derek back before it was too late.

Reid's heart pounded in his chest as he watched Penelope's face twist in pain. The room was small, cramped with equipment and the frantic pace of the paramedics who had just arrived. Yet, even with all the chaos around them, Reid remained anchored to Penelope, offering her his steady presence as she clung to him.

"You're doing great, Penelope," he whispered, his hand gently squeezing hers. His voice, usually so analytical, now carried an edge of calm reassurance. "Just focus on breathing. In and out."

Penelope's face was slick with sweat, her breaths shallow and erratic. She nodded weakly, her grip tightening around Reid's hand as another contraction hit. She gasped, her face contorting in pain as she tried to focus.

"I can't do this, Reid," she gasped, her voice weak with exhaustion. "I can't... it's too much. I'm scared."

Reid leaned closer, speaking softly but firmly. "You're doing it, Penelope. One breath at a time. The baby's coming. And I'm here with you."

Another contraction rippled through her body, and she gasped. The pressure was overwhelming, a weight she couldn't push against. Reid's eyes flicked to the paramedics as they prepared the necessary tools, their movements practiced, but the urgency in the air was thick, palpable.

Reid swallowed, the weight of what was happening pressing down on him. He had never been in a situation like this before—delivering a baby in the middle of a crime scene. His knowledge of medicine was vast, but this was something different. His hands were steady, but his mind raced with calculations of timing and steps.

"Okay, Penelope," Reid said, his voice cutting through the haze of pain in the room. "I need you to push. You can do this. One more time, just like we practiced. Push, slow and steady."

Penelope nodded, her body shaking with the effort. She cried out, but Reid didn't waver. He kept his focus on her, reminding her of each breath, each push, trying to keep her grounded. The room seemed to spin around them, but he remained constant.

As Penelope gave another push, the paramedics moved in, taking their positions to assist. Reid's attention shifted slightly as he ensured the baby's safety and position. Sweat dripped down his face as he stayed focused, every muscle in his body trained on what needed to happen next.

"Okay, Penelope, the head is crowning," Reid said, his voice urgent but reassuring. "You're almost there. One more push, and we'll have your baby."

Penelope let out a strangled sob, her body trembling with the strain, but her determination shone through. With a final, agonizing push, the baby was born—a tiny, fragile cry filling the air.

Reid's eyes widened, his breath catching in his throat as the baby was placed in his arms. The infant was small, but her lungs were strong, and her cries cut through the tension in the room.

"Penelope," Reid whispered, looking down at the tiny, squirming baby. "It's a girl. She's here. You did it."

Tears welled up in Penelope's eyes as she looked at the child, her body still shaking but now with the joy of motherhood. Despite the pain, despite the fear, she had brought her daughter into the world.

The paramedics quickly wrapped the baby in a blanket, monitoring her closely as they prepared to move both mother and child to the hospital.

Meanwhile, Hotch, JJ, Rossi, and Emily had returned to the search for Derek. The tension was suffocating. Each of them feared the worst, but none of them said it out loud. They had to keep moving. Derek's life was on the line, and every second counted.

They spread out, searching every corner of the property, retracing the steps they'd taken earlier. Hotch's mind was sharp, his instincts pulling him forward as he led the team through the abandoned warehouse.

"We're running out of time," Hotch muttered, his jaw tight. "We need to find him now."

"Rossi, check that side," Emily called as she moved toward the back of the building.

JJ was silent as she scanned the area, her heart racing with worry. Derek was missing. But so was Penelope's safety, and the uncertainty of both weighed heavily on her. They couldn't afford to lose anyone else.

Suddenly, Rossi's voice came over the radio, sharp with urgency. "I've found him. He's over here."

The team rushed toward Rossi's position, their hearts pounding with fear and hope. As they neared the location, they found Derek lying motionless in a dark corner, his body crumpled against the cold concrete. His shirt was torn, and blood stained the ground beneath him.

"Oh God," Emily gasped, rushing forward. "Derek!"

Hotch's face went pale as he knelt beside Derek, quickly assessing his condition. His chest was barely rising, and the blood loss was severe.

"He's been shot," Rossi said, his voice grim. "He needs medical attention immediately."

"We need to stabilize him and get him to the hospital," Hotch said, his voice cutting through the panic. "JJ, call for a helicopter. We're not waiting for an ambulance."

"Right." JJ's voice trembled as she pulled out her phone, dialing for urgent medical transport.

As the team worked to stabilize Derek, Emily scanned the area, making sure there were no other threats. The unsub could still be nearby, and they had to ensure their safety as they waited for help.

Back in the room where Penelope had just given birth, Reid stayed beside her, his hands still gently holding the tiny baby. He'd done his best to make sure the newborn was stable, checking her vitals and keeping her warm as the paramedics moved to help Penelope.

"She's so beautiful," Penelope whispered, tears streaming down her face. "Is she okay?"

Reid nodded, his own eyes misty with emotion. "She's perfect, Penelope. She's a fighter, just like her mom."

The paramedics worked quickly, preparing to transport both Penelope and her baby. But as the door opened, signaling the arrival of medical personnel, Reid's radio buzzed with the news they had all been dreading.

"Reid," Hotch's voice crackled through the static. "We found Derek. He's been shot, badly. We need you to come to him as soon as you're able."

Reid's heart skipped a beat. "What? How bad is it?"

"He's alive, but he's lost a lot of blood. We need you here to help stabilize him until the paramedics arrive."

Reid's mind raced. He had to make a decision. Penelope needed to be transported. Derek needed him. He turned to the paramedic closest to him, his voice calm despite the fear bubbling beneath the surface.

"Take Penelope and the baby to the hospital," Reid said, his voice firm. "I'm going to help Derek. Keep them both stable. Don't let her out of your sight."

As the paramedics moved to transport Penelope, Reid dashed out the door, his legs carrying him to where the team was frantically working to keep Derek alive. His heart hammered in his chest as he approached his friend, who was barely conscious, blood soaking his clothes.

"Derek," Reid said urgently, kneeling beside him. "Stay with me, buddy. We're getting you out of here."

Derek's eyes fluttered, his lips parted as he tried to speak, but no words came out.

"Don't try to talk," Reid ordered gently. "You've been shot. We're going to get you to the hospital."

With a practiced hand, Reid applied pressure to the wound, doing everything he could to slow the blood flow. The team continued to help, their resolve hardening as they worked to save one of their own.

The storm was far from over. Penelope's journey as a mother had just begun, but Derek was fighting for his life. And as the paramedics rushed to transport both Penelope and Derek, the team was left with one truth: they were a family, bound by loyalty, and they would fight for each other until the very end.
