Chapter 20: Lessons in Shadows and Bonds Forged in Light

The shop above was a quiet facade, a peaceful sanctuary for anyone who wandered in seeking mundane trinkets or harmless charms. But beneath Shirogane Curiosities lay a hidden dimension of chaos and training—a pocket realm of Kael's own design. This training ground wasn't vast or sprawling, but compact and versatile, a maze of dark stone chambers and shimmering fields with adjustable gravity and time flow. Here, Kael was free to train without the risk of drawing unwanted attention.

And here, he trained Lyra.

Lyra's natural talent was undeniable. Kael suspected it stemmed from her mysterious lineage, but she rarely spoke of her past, and he didn't push her. She had adjusted quickly to the intense sessions, her sharp mind and boundless energy making her an ideal student. But her fiery determination was matched only by her tendency to be reckless—a trait Kael constantly worked to temper.

The Training Ground

"Again," Kael said, his voice calm but firm.

Lyra stood in the center of the chamber, panting and clutching a shimmering dagger Kael had forged for her. The blade was lightweight, its edges faintly glowing with Kael's sigils—runes that enhanced her control over energy.

Sweat dripped from her brow as she glared at the holographic opponent Kael had conjured. The shadowy figure moved with inhuman speed, a blur of claws and fangs that struck with relentless precision.

Lyra lunged forward, her movements sharp but imprecise. She managed to land a glancing blow, but the shadow retaliated with a swift counter, knocking her to the ground.

Kael observed silently, his golden eyes narrowing. "You're overcommitting. Stop chasing the attack and let it come to you."

Lyra groaned, rolling to her feet. "Easier said than done. This thing's fast!"

Kael's lips twitched into a faint smile. "So are you. Speed is only an advantage if you use it wisely. Watch your footing and control your breathing."

Lyra muttered something under her breath but nodded. She adjusted her stance, her dagger held steady as she refocused. The shadow charged again, and this time, Lyra sidestepped with precision, her blade slicing through the opponent's side. The figure dissipated into mist.

Kael clapped slowly, his smile widening. "Better. But don't get cocky. That was the easiest setting."

Lyra groaned dramatically, collapsing onto the stone floor. "You're impossible, you know that?"

Kael chuckled, offering her a hand. "And you're stubborn. A dangerous combination."

An Unexpected Visitor

Their session was interrupted by the sound of footsteps echoing down the hidden stairwell. Kael stiffened, his golden eyes narrowing as he turned toward the entrance. Few people knew about the training ground beneath the shop, and even fewer had the audacity to enter uninvited.

To his surprise, it was Akeno Himejima who appeared at the threshold. She descended gracefully, her long black hair swaying with each step and her violet eyes scanning the chamber with curiosity.

"Kael," she said, her voice as smooth as silk. "I thought you might be down here."

Kael raised an eyebrow, his usual calm demeanor masking the unease stirring within him. "Akeno. To what do I owe the pleasure?"

Before she could respond, Lyra darted to Kael's side, her expression a mix of curiosity and suspicion. "Who's she?"

Akeno's eyes flicked to Lyra, her lips curving into a polite smile. "I might ask the same about you."

"This is Lyra," Kael said, placing a hand on the girl's shoulder. "She's...under my care."

Lyra tilted her head, studying Akeno with an intensity that bordered on possessiveness. "Are you a devil too?"

Akeno chuckled softly. "I am. And you?"

Lyra's eyes darted to Kael, seeking permission before answering. When he gave a subtle nod, she replied, "I'm Lyra. And I'm training to be strong. Stronger than anyone."

Akeno's smile deepened. "Ambitious. I like that."

Kael cleared his throat, cutting off the exchange. "Akeno, why are you here?"

Akeno's gaze returned to him, a flicker of something unreadable passing through her eyes. "Rias was curious about how you've been. But I came on my own. I wanted to see this shop of yours—and you."

Kael frowned slightly, unsure how to interpret her words. Akeno had always been perceptive, and her presence here was unlikely to be a mere coincidence.

Lyra's Reaction

As Kael and Akeno spoke, Lyra remained close to Kael, her demeanor growing increasingly clingy. She clung to his arm, glaring at Akeno with thinly veiled hostility.

"Kael doesn't need visitors," Lyra said bluntly. "We're busy."

Akeno arched an elegant eyebrow, clearly amused. "Is that so? It seems I've interrupted something important."

Kael sighed, gently prying Lyra's hands from his arm. "Lyra, why don't you take a break upstairs? I'll handle this."

Lyra hesitated, her silver eyes narrowing. "Fine. But don't take too long." She shot Akeno one last glare before retreating up the stairwell.

Once she was gone, Akeno chuckled softly. "She's protective, isn't she?"

"She's young," Kael replied, his tone neutral. "And she's been through a lot. She's still learning to trust people."

Akeno nodded thoughtfully. "She's lucky to have you. Not many devils would take in someone like her."

Kael didn't respond immediately, his gaze distant. "She reminds me of someone I once knew. That's all."

A Lingering Presence

Their conversation turned to lighter topics, with Akeno asking about Kael's shop and his life outside the Underworld. Despite his reservations, Kael found himself enjoying the conversation. Akeno's presence was strangely comforting, her sharp wit and warm demeanor making it easy to forget, if only briefly, the burdens he carried.

But as the evening wore on, Kael couldn't shake the feeling that her visit was more than just curiosity. Akeno was too perceptive, too attuned to the nuances of the supernatural world. She had noticed Lyra's power, however faintly it was concealed, and she had seen the faint traces of Kael's hidden strength.

When Akeno finally left, Kael stood at the entrance to the training ground, his mind racing. He couldn't afford to let his guard down—not with Akeno, not with anyone.

Lyra returned shortly after, her expression sulky. "I don't like her," she declared.

Kael chuckled softly. "She's not so bad. But she's not someone we can take lightly."

Lyra's gaze hardened. "I'll get stronger. Strong enough to protect you if she—or anyone—tries to hurt us."

Kael placed a hand on her head, ruffling her hair gently. "You're already strong, Lyra. But there's still a lot to learn."

She nodded, her determination unwavering.

And so, their training continued, the quiet shop above hiding the storm brewing below.
