Chapter 24: The Calm Before the Storm

Kael Drakos found himself standing behind the counter of his small shop, his hands idly arranging a row of low-level magical trinkets. The shop had become a hidden gem for the occasional supernatural visitor and curious human, tucked away in a quiet corner of Kuoh. Lyra sat nearby, diligently reading an old tome about magical theory, her youthful curiosity undimmed.

It was a quiet, uneventful afternoon—just the way Kael liked it. The mundane routine gave him a sense of normalcy, something he hadn't felt in centuries.

Akeno's Visit
The soft chime of the doorbell snapped Kael out of his thoughts. He looked up to see Akeno Himejima stepping into the shop, her usual composed smile lighting up her face.

"Good afternoon, Kael-sensei," she greeted warmly, her tone carrying a teasing edge as she addressed him by his old title from the academy.

Kael raised an eyebrow, his expression calm but curious. "Akeno. I didn't expect to see you here. Something you need?"

Akeno chuckled, her gaze wandering over the shelves filled with enchanted trinkets and low-grade potions. "Not particularly. I was just curious about your shop. I didn't expect someone like you to run a place like this."

Lyra, who had been quietly flipping through her book, looked up and pouted. "Why wouldn't he? It's a nice shop, and we get interesting customers!"

Kael smiled faintly, placing a reassuring hand on Lyra's head. "She didn't mean it like that, Lyra."

Akeno's eyes softened as she watched the interaction, but her curiosity remained. "Kael, you've always been a mystery. Even after everything we've learned about you, it feels like there's still so much more."

Kael met her gaze, his expression unreadable. "I prefer to keep it that way. It's safer for everyone."

Akeno's smile faltered slightly, but she didn't press further. Instead, she changed the subject. "I heard Rias and Sona have been digging into your past. It's causing quite a stir among their families."

Kael shrugged, unbothered. "They're welcome to dig. I've made peace with my past."

Akeno studied him for a moment before her smile returned. "You're a strange one, Kael. But I suppose that's what makes you interesting."

A Sudden Encounter
As Akeno browsed the shop, the doorbell chimed again. This time, the visitor was a young man with sharp features and a confident demeanor. He was clearly a devil, his aura carefully suppressed but still noticeable to Kael.

The man looked around the shop, his eyes narrowing slightly when he noticed Kael behind the counter. "Kael Drakos?"

Kael's expression didn't change, but his voice grew colder. "That depends on who's asking."

The man smirked. "I'm just a messenger. Someone wants to meet you. They didn't give me a name, but they said you'd understand."

Kael's eyes narrowed slightly, and he exchanged a glance with Lyra, who was now on high alert. "Tell them I'm not interested."

The man raised an eyebrow. "You sure about that? They seemed pretty insistent."

Before Kael could respond, Akeno stepped forward, her aura flaring slightly as she positioned herself between the man and Lyra. "If Kael isn't interested, then you should leave."

The man hesitated for a moment before smirking again. "Fine. But don't say I didn't warn you." With that, he turned and left the shop, the bell chiming softly as the door closed behind him.

Akeno turned to Kael, concern flickering in her eyes. "Who was that?"

Kael shook his head. "No one important. Just a reminder that the past has a way of catching up with you."

Lyra's Training
Later that evening, Kael led Lyra down to the dimensional training ground hidden beneath the shop. The underground chamber was vast, its walls lined with ancient runes that pulsed with faint light.

"You felt it, didn't you?" Kael asked, his tone firm but gentle.

Lyra nodded, her expression serious. "The man earlier… he wasn't just a messenger. There was something off about him."

Kael crossed his arms, his gaze distant. "He was testing the waters. Whoever sent him will come back, and next time, they'll bring trouble. That's why we need to be ready."

Lyra straightened, determination shining in her eyes. "What do we do?"

Kael smiled faintly. "We train. Harder than ever."

For the next few hours, the chamber echoed with the sounds of combat as Kael pushed Lyra to her limits. He taught her not just how to use her raw power but how to think strategically, to anticipate her opponent's moves.

A Chance Meeting
As Kael and Lyra finished their training, they returned to the shop to find Akeno waiting for them.

"I thought you'd gone home," Kael said, surprised.

Akeno shrugged, her expression playful. "I figured I'd stick around. Besides, I wanted to see how Lyra's training is going."

Lyra perked up at the attention, her eyes shining. "I'm getting stronger! Kael says I'm improving a lot!"

Akeno knelt down to Lyra's level, her smile kind. "That's wonderful, Lyra. You're lucky to have such a talented teacher."

Lyra beamed, but Kael frowned slightly, sensing the subtle shift in Akeno's demeanor.

"You're not just here to check on Lyra," Kael said quietly.

Akeno stood, her playful smile returning. "You're sharp as always, Kael. I wanted to ask you something, but it can wait. For now, just know that Rias and Sona are keeping an eye on you—and so am I."

Kael watched her leave, his thoughts swirling. The peace he had worked so hard to create was beginning to fray, and he couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning.
