Chapter 26: Meeting Issei – The Shirogane Connection

The morning sun bathed Kuoh Academy in warm light as Kael stood outside the main gates, watching the students file in. Despite being a shopkeeper now, Kael couldn't entirely sever his ties to the academy. His old teaching post had left him with habits that drew him to the school grounds, especially during mornings when the air was still fresh and lively.

His gaze drifted toward a group of noisy boys, one of whom stood out. Issei Hyoudou, Kuoh's resident pervert and self-proclaimed "Harem King," laughed with his two equally boisterous friends. Kael frowned slightly. Issei was a peculiar devil; despite his crude behavior, he carried the faint but unmistakable aura of a Sacred Gear wielder.

Kael hadn't interacted much with Issei during his tenure as a teacher. The boy was unremarkable back then—a human with a penchant for trouble. Now, though, he was different.

Kael was about to turn away when Issei suddenly noticed him.

"Sensei?" Issei's voice rang out, and he jogged over, his friends gawking behind him. "Whoa, it really is you! Shirogane-sensei, right?"

Kael inwardly winced at the mention of his old alias but managed a small smile. "It's just Shirogane now. I'm no longer a teacher."

Issei grinned, his usual carefree demeanor shining through. "Man, it's been ages! What are you doing here? Didn't you leave like two years ago?"

Kael hesitated before answering. "I live nearby now. I run a small shop in the city."

"A shop?" Issei's eyes lit up. "What kind of shop? Do you sell anything… interesting?"

Kael chuckled softly. "That depends on what you consider interesting."

The Awkward Encounter

Their conversation was interrupted by Rias and Akeno, who were approaching from the direction of the academy. Both women froze momentarily upon seeing Kael.

"Kael," Rias greeted, her tone even but laced with curiosity. "What brings you here?"

Kael nodded politely. "Just passing by."

Issei, oblivious to the tension, glanced between them. "Wait, Kael? Since when did you stop calling him Sensei?"

Rias' gaze flicked to Issei, her expression softening. "We've… gotten to know him better, Issei."

"Oh." Issei scratched the back of his head, clearly confused but too distracted to dwell on it. "Anyway, Sensei—uh, I mean, Shirogane—you're not teaching anymore, right? So, you're just a regular guy now?"

Kael's lips twitched upward in a faint smile. "Something like that."

Akeno, who had been silent until now, stepped forward, her eyes gleaming with amusement. "Issei, you seem unusually interested in Kael. Is there a reason?"

Issei rubbed his neck, suddenly looking sheepish. "Well, yeah, kinda. The name Shirogane just sounded familiar, y'know? My dad used to talk about someone named Shirogane. He said it was a family friend or something."

Kael's expression froze for the briefest moment, but he quickly masked it. "Your father? What was his name?"

"Gorou Hyoudou," Issei replied. "He's just a normal guy, but he always had weird stories about devils and stuff when I was a kid. I didn't believe him back then, but now… well, turns out he wasn't entirely crazy."

Kael's mind raced. The name Gorou Hyoudou struck a faint chord in his memory, a distant connection from a past life he thought he'd buried. Gorou had been a human who stumbled upon the supernatural world, a man Kael had crossed paths with during one of his assignments in the Underworld.

A Glimpse into the Past

As Kael walked away from the academy, Issei's words lingered in his mind. Gorou Hyoudou… That name feels like it belongs to another lifetime.

He paused at the edge of a quiet park near his shop, leaning against a tree and closing his eyes. Memories from centuries past stirred, vivid and unrelenting.

Gorou Hyoudou had been a wandering scholar back then, his curiosity about the supernatural leading him into dangerous territory. Kael, operating under a different alias, had been tasked with investigating rogue devils encroaching on human settlements. Their paths crossed when Gorou stumbled into a trap meant for Kael.

A Fateful Encounter (Flashback)

The night had been dark, the air heavy with the acrid stench of sulfur. Gorou, a lanky man in his late twenties, had clutched an ancient tome to his chest, his breath coming in ragged gasps as he ran through a dense forest.

"Foolish human," a guttural voice growled, the sound reverberating through the trees. A hulking rogue devil emerged from the shadows, its claws glinting in the moonlight.

Gorou tripped over a root, tumbling to the ground. He scrambled backward, his eyes wide with terror as the devil closed in.

Before the creature could strike, a shadow descended from above. Kael, clad in battle armor, landed gracefully between Gorou and the rogue devil. His crimson eyes glowed faintly in the darkness, and his presence exuded raw power.

"You've made a mistake coming here," Kael said coldly, summoning a blade of pure energy.

The battle was swift and decisive. Kael dispatched the rogue devil with precision, his movements fluid and unrelenting. When it was over, he turned to Gorou, who stared at him with a mixture of awe and fear.

"Who… who are you?" Gorou stammered.

Kael sheathed his blade, his expression unreadable. "Someone who ensures balance. What are you doing here, human?"

Gorou hesitated, then held up the tome. "I study the supernatural. I… I didn't mean to intrude. I was just curious."

Kael frowned but sensed no malice in the man. "Curiosity can be dangerous. You're lucky I found you before they did."

Gorou nodded fervently. "Thank you. I owe you my life."

Kael dismissed the notion with a wave of his hand. "Keep your distance from this world. It's not meant for humans."

But Gorou had been persistent. Over the months that followed, he sought out Kael repeatedly, asking questions about devils, magic, and the hidden truths of the world. Against his better judgment, Kael indulged him, finding the man's enthusiasm oddly refreshing. Gorou's innocence reminded Kael of what he had lost long ago—a life untainted by the burdens of power and responsibility.

The Promise

One night, under a starlit sky, Gorou made Kael promise something unusual.

"If I ever have children," Gorou said, his tone earnest, "tell them the truth if they ever meet you. Let them know the world is bigger than they think."

Kael had laughed at the time. "You're assuming I'll still be around when that happens."

"You're a devil," Gorou replied with a grin. "I think you'll manage."

Return to the Present

Kael opened his eyes, the weight of that promise pressing on him. He hadn't thought about Gorou in centuries, assuming the man's family line had faded into obscurity. But now, standing before him was Issei—a direct link to a past he had tried to bury.

Kael's Decision

Kael resolved to visit the Hyoudou household, if only to honor Gorou's memory. He couldn't ignore the connection, no matter how inconvenient it might be.

Issei's Curiosity Deepens

Meanwhile, back at the academy, Issei couldn't stop thinking about his former teacher. He turned to Rias and Akeno during lunch, his brow furrowed in thought.

"Hey, Buchou, does Shirogane-sensei seem… I dunno, mysterious to you?"

Rias smirked. "That's putting it lightly, Issei. Why do you ask?"

"Well," Issei began, scratching his head, "my dad used to talk about a guy named Shirogane. He said he was a family friend who saved his life once. Do you think it's the same guy?"

Akeno's eyes gleamed with interest. "It's possible. Kael has been around a long time, and it wouldn't be the first time he's crossed paths with humans."

Rias tapped her chin thoughtfully. "If that's true, it would explain why Kael seemed so distracted when you mentioned your father."

Issei leaned forward, his voice eager. "Do you think I should ask him about it?"

Rias frowned slightly. "Be careful, Issei. Kael doesn't share his past easily. If he's gone to such lengths to hide it, there's a reason."

"But he's not dangerous, right?" Issei asked, his tone uncertain.

Akeno smiled reassuringly. "Not to you, Issei. Kael may be secretive, but he's not your enemy."

A Chance Meeting

That evening, as Issei walked home, he noticed Kael standing outside a quiet tea shop, staring at the setting sun. Gathering his courage, Issei approached.

"Sensei—uh, I mean, Shirogane," Issei said awkwardly.

Kael turned, his expression neutral but not unkind. "Issei. What brings you here?"

Issei hesitated before blurting out, "Did you know my dad? He used to talk about someone named Shirogane who saved his life. Was that you?"

Kael's gaze softened, and he let out a quiet sigh. "Yes, I knew Gorou. He was… an unusual man, but a good one."

Issei's eyes widened. "So it's true! He always said devils were real, but I thought he was joking."

Kael smiled faintly. "He wasn't wrong. Your father had a knack for finding the extraordinary in the ordinary."

"Did you guys fight together or something?" Issei asked eagerly.

"Something like that," Kael replied, his tone evasive. "Your father was brave, even if he didn't always realize it. You've inherited that from him."

Issei blinked, taken aback by the compliment. "Uh, thanks?"

Kael placed a hand on Issei's shoulder, his expression serious. "Be careful, Issei. The world your father glimpsed is full of danger. Protect those you care about, and don't let curiosity lead you astray."

With that, Kael turned and walked away, leaving Issei with more questions than answers.

Rias and Akeno's Observations

As they walked into the academy, Akeno hung back slightly, her gaze fixed on Kael's retreating figure.

"Did you notice how tense he became when Issei mentioned his father?" she whispered to Rias.

Rias nodded, her expression thoughtful. "It's another piece of the puzzle. Kael's past keeps creeping into the present, no matter how much he tries to hide it."

Akeno's lips curved into a sly smile. "He's not very good at keeping secrets, is he?"

Rias smirked. "No, but he's good at deflecting. We'll have to approach this carefully. If Kael has ties to Issei's family, it could complicate things even further."

Akeno tilted her head, her tone teasing. "Are you worried about Kael or Issei?"

"Both," Rias admitted. "Kael may not want trouble, but he's not the type to back down if his hand is forced. And Issei… well, you know how he is. If he gets involved, things could escalate quickly."

Akeno chuckled softly. "That's true. But for now, let's just watch and see where this leads. Kael isn't going anywhere."
