Chapter 27: Fading Into the Shadows
The world spun forward, days blending into nights as Kael Drakos continued his mundane routine in the quiet corner of Kuoh City. His shop, tucked away in an unassuming alley, buzzed with a steady stream of customers—humans unknowingly purchasing low-tier magical trinkets, and the occasional supernatural visitor seeking discreet assistance.
Kael had mastered the art of fading into the background. His presence in the city had become a faint whisper, a shadow that people barely noticed. For someone who had lived centuries under the weight of his name, this anonymity was a welcome reprieve.
But even shadows attract light eventually.
A Quiet Shop, an Unspoken Shift
Lyra's voice rang out from the back room, cheerful as ever. "Onii-sama, we're running low on those enchanted amulets! Should I restock the display?"
Kael looked up from the ledger he was updating. His silver hair caught the soft glow of the magical lanterns overhead. "Go ahead, but don't draw too much attention. Remember, this is a quiet shop."
Lyra pouted, her crimson eyes sparkling with mischief. "It's always about being quiet with you. When are we going to do something fun, like exploring the city? Or maybe—"
"Lyra." Kael's tone was firm but not unkind.
She huffed, carrying the amulets to the front. "You're no fun, Onii-sama."
As Lyra busied herself, Kael leaned back in his chair, letting out a deep breath. It had been months since the events that forced him to reveal glimpses of his power to Rias and Sona's peerages. Though they hadn't pressed him too hard since, he knew their curiosity hadn't waned. They were biding their time, waiting for him to slip up or reveal more.
Kuoh Academy: Whispers of Suspicion
Across town, at Kuoh Academy, the Student Council and the Occult Research Club convened separately, but both groups shared a common topic: Kael Shirogane.
Sona Sitri adjusted her glasses, her gaze sharp as she addressed her peerage. "It's been quiet. Too quiet. Shirogane-san has withdrawn completely, focusing on his shop and avoiding any interaction with the supernatural."
Tsubaki frowned. "Do you believe it's deliberate, Kaichou?"
"Of course," Sona replied. "Kael Drakos is not someone who fades away without purpose. He's observing, waiting. For what, I'm not sure. But we need to be prepared."
In the Occult Research Club, Rias Gremory sat in a similar position of contemplation. "It's strange," she said, her voice thoughtful. "Kael hasn't made any moves. Even Akeno hasn't been able to gather much about his activities. It's as if he's content living this quiet life."
"Maybe he's just a weirdo," Issei Hyoudou offered, earning a glare from Rias.
Akeno chuckled softly. "Weird or not, he's intriguing. And we both know devils with his level of power don't simply disappear into obscurity. He's hiding something."
Rias nodded. "We need to tread carefully. If we push too hard, we risk alienating him—or worse."
Kael's Isolation
Kael had long perfected the art of seclusion, but the isolation was starting to wear on him. In the evenings, he would retreat to the dimensional training ground beneath his shop, guiding Lyra through rigorous exercises to refine her abilities.
"You're improving," Kael said one evening as Lyra collapsed onto the soft grass of the simulated terrain.
She grinned up at him, her silver hair matted with sweat. "Of course! I have the best teacher in the world."
Kael allowed himself a small smile. "Don't let it go to your head."
As Lyra rested, Kael stood at the edge of the training ground, his gaze distant. He could feel the world shifting around him. The balance he had fought so hard to maintain was beginning to unravel.
A Visitor at the Shop
One rainy afternoon, as Kael prepared to close the shop, the bell above the door jingled. Akeno Himejima stepped inside, her presence as commanding as ever.
Kael raised an eyebrow. "Akeno-san. What brings you here?"
She smiled, brushing a strand of raven hair behind her ear. "Just thought I'd drop by. You've been awfully quiet lately."
"Is that so?" Kael replied, his tone even.
Akeno leaned against the counter, her gaze probing. "Rias is curious, you know. So is Sona. They're both wondering why someone like you would settle for this quiet little life."
Kael met her gaze, unflinching. "Perhaps I've grown tired of the noise."
Akeno studied him for a moment before her smile softened. "You're an enigma, Kael. But I suppose you already know that."
Without waiting for a response, she turned and left, leaving Kael alone with his thoughts.
Kael's Resolve
As the weeks passed, Kael began to retreat further into himself. He avoided the academy, limited his interactions with other devils, and focused solely on maintaining his shop and training Lyra.
But deep down, he knew this quiet life couldn't last. The shadows of his past were creeping closer, and the delicate balance he had created was on the verge of collapse.
For now, Kael would continue to fade into the background, watching and waiting. But when the time came, he would be ready.
