Chapter 28: Observing the Shadows
Kael sat behind the counter of his shop, a book in his hands but his attention elsewhere. The faint hum of enchantments and the warm glow of magical lights created a calm ambiance, but his sharp senses extended far beyond the confines of the shop.
The events of the previous night still lingered in his mind. He had felt the clash of auras near the abandoned church—devil, fallen angel, and something else. The delicate balance of Kuoh's supernatural ecosystem was shifting, and he wasn't sure he liked the direction it was heading.
The Night Before
Kael had watched from a rooftop, hidden beneath a veil of magic. He had no intention of interfering as the Occult Research Club confronted the fallen angels. The Gremory peerage was capable, even if their experience was limited.
From his vantage point, he observed Issei Hyoudou, the newest member of Rias' peerage, fumbling his way through the battle. The boy was raw, unpolished, but there was potential there—a spark of something greater waiting to be ignited.
The fallen angels were formidable in their own right, their dark wings cutting through the night sky as they wielded their weapons with deadly precision. However, their arrogance was their undoing.
Kael's eyes narrowed as he focused on Akeno. Her graceful movements and crackling thunder magic were a sight to behold. She fought with precision, her attacks swift and relentless. Yet there was an edge to her aura—a hint of something darker, buried beneath her serene façade.
"Impressive," Kael murmured to himself as Rias stepped into the fray, her crimson aura flaring like a beacon. The Gremory heiress commanded her peerage with confidence, her power evident in every move she made.
As the battle reached its climax, Kael felt a shift in the air. The fallen angels were overwhelmed, their arrogance shattered by the unity and strength of Rias' peerage.
He turned away as the final blow was struck, his expression unreadable. "Foolish pawns," he muttered, stepping into the shadows. "They underestimated their opponents and paid the price."
Present Day
Kael set the book down and sighed. Lyra peeked out from the back room, her curious eyes studying him.
"Onii-sama, you've been quiet all morning," she said, stepping into the room. "Is something wrong?"
Kael shook his head. "Nothing's wrong, Lyra. Just... reflecting."
She tilted her head. "Is it about what happened last night? You felt it too, didn't you?"
Kael smiled faintly. "I did. Rias and her peerage handled it well. They're stronger than I gave them credit for."
Lyra frowned. "But if they're being targeted, shouldn't we do something?"
Kael's expression hardened slightly. "Not yet. This is their fight, Lyra. They need to learn to navigate these dangers on their own. Interfering would only make things worse."
Lyra hesitated before nodding. "I understand. But if things get worse, we'll help, right?"
Kael placed a reassuring hand on her head. "Of course. I won't let anything happen to this town—or to them."
A Walk Through Kuoh
Later that afternoon, Kael decided to take a walk through the town. The streets were bustling with activity, the mundane lives of humans carrying on oblivious to the supernatural battles happening in the shadows.
As he passed by the school, he spotted Rias and her peerage gathered near the gates. They seemed relaxed, but Kael could sense the underlying tension in their auras.
Akeno glanced in his direction and offered a small wave. Kael nodded in return but didn't approach. He wasn't ready to involve himself directly—not yet.
