Chapter 31: The Arrival of Riser and Training Begins
The air in the Occult Research Club felt heavier than usual. Everyone in the room seemed on edge, though none would admit it outright. The arrival of Riser Phenex, the fiancé chosen for Rias Gremory by their families, loomed over the group like a stormcloud.
Rias' Resolve
Rias sat at her desk, her fingers laced together as she stared out the window. Her crimson hair glimmered under the sunlight, but her expression betrayed her internal conflict. She wasn't one to let others dictate her fate, but the weight of her family's expectations bore down on her.
Akeno, ever the supportive queen, approached with a comforting smile. "Rias, are you sure you won't reconsider asking for Kael's help? His power would be invaluable if things escalate with Riser."
Rias shook her head firmly. "No. Kael has made it clear he wants no part in these matters. Besides, this is my fight. If I can't handle Riser, I have no right to call myself a Gremory."
Akeno's eyes flickered with hesitation, but she nodded, knowing it wasn't the time to push the issue.
Kael's Reluctant Role
Meanwhile, across town in his quiet shop, Kael Shirogane—or rather, Kael Drakos—was busy arranging shelves of mundane supernatural trinkets. The store was peaceful, as it often was during the late afternoon. Lyra hummed a tune as she worked beside him, her bright demeanor a stark contrast to her brother's reserved nature.
"Kael," Lyra said suddenly, breaking the silence. "Don't you think it's time you got more involved? You've been sitting on the sidelines for too long."
Kael paused, glancing at his sister with a raised brow. "And get tangled up in their problems? No, thank you. I prefer my quiet life."
Before Lyra could retort, the bell above the door chimed. Akeno Himejima stepped inside, her presence immediately commanding attention.
"Kael-kun," she greeted, her voice sweet but with a hint of mischief. "We need a favor."
Kael sighed, already sensing where this was headed. "I'm not interested in fighting your battles, Akeno."
"It's not about fighting," she replied smoothly. "Rias has decided to intensify our training to prepare for Riser, and we could use someone with your expertise. You don't have to fight—just instruct."
Lyra perked up at this, her eyes shining. "Oh, that sounds fun! Can I join?"
Kael pinched the bridge of his nose, muttering under his breath. "Why do I even bother arguing with you two?"
The ORC's Perspective: Training Begins
By evening, the ORC had gathered at a secluded training ground prepared by Rias. It was vast, surrounded by dense trees and cloaked in magical barriers to prevent any disturbances. The tension among the group was palpable, each member feeling the pressure to grow stronger before the inevitable confrontation with Riser.
Kael stood at the edge of the field, arms crossed as he observed the group. Lyra was by his side, bouncing with excitement. Akeno, true to her word, had managed to drag him here, though he maintained his usual aloof demeanor.
"You're all overthinking your techniques," Kael said bluntly after watching their sparring sessions for a few minutes. His voice cut through the air, drawing everyone's attention. "Power is important, but precision and adaptability are what win battles."
Issei, sweating profusely from his match with Kiba, looked at Kael skeptically. "Easy for you to say. You're some kind of ultimate-class devil, right? We're not exactly on your level."
Kael raised an eyebrow. "And that's your first mistake—comparing yourself to others instead of focusing on your own growth. Stop trying to mimic power you don't have and hone what's uniquely yours."
His words struck a chord with Issei, though the boy didn't fully understand them yet.
Akeno smirked, clearly enjoying Kael's no-nonsense approach. "See? I told you he'd make a great instructor."
Over the next few hours, Kael demonstrated techniques and strategies, occasionally stepping in to correct someone's stance or form. His knowledge of combat was unparalleled, and even Rias couldn't help but admire his expertise.
Lyra, meanwhile, enthusiastically joined the training, her playful energy balancing out Kael's stern demeanor. She sparred with Issei, offering encouragement and tips as they practiced together.
Building Bonds
Despite his reluctance, Kael found himself growing more invested in the group's progress. There was something about their determination—especially Issei's—that reminded him of his own journey.
During a break, Akeno approached him, handing him a cup of tea. "You're surprisingly good at this," she remarked.
Kael shrugged. "I've had centuries to hone my skills. Teaching is just another extension of that."
Akeno tilted her head, studying him. "Why do you keep yourself so closed off, Kael? You have so much to offer, yet you insist on staying in the background."
He met her gaze, his expression unreadable. "Because the moment you step into the spotlight, you become a target. I've had enough of that for one lifetime."
Akeno didn't press further, sensing the weight of his words.
Rias was determined to prove her worth, and the rest of the ORC was equally committed to supporting her.
Kael watched from the sidelines, his thoughts conflicted. He had no interest in getting involved in Rias' battle with Riser, but something about the ORC's camaraderie stirred a long-buried part of him.
Lyra noticed his pensive expression and nudged him playfully. "You're rooting for them, aren't you?"
Kael chuckled softly. "Don't get any ideas. I'm just here to make sure they don't get themselves killed."
A New Chapter BeginsAs night cloaked the training grounds in its cool embrace, the ORC members sat scattered across the field, their exhaustion evident. Even Issei, ever the loud and energetic one, lay flat on his back, breathing heavily as he stared at the starry sky. The day had been grueling, but the progress they made left an air of accomplishment lingering among them.
Kael and Lyra had stepped away from the main group, preparing to leave, when Akeno intercepted them at the gate. The moonlight framed her figure, and her usual playful demeanor was replaced with an air of sincerity.
"Thank you," she said, her voice soft but filled with meaning. "You've done more for us than you realize."
Kael paused, his hand resting on the gate. For a moment, the mask of disinterest he wore so carefully seemed to falter. He glanced at Akeno, his crimson eyes reflecting something akin to uncertainty.
"I'm not doing this for gratitude," he said at last, his tone measured. "I'm only here because you dragged me into it."
Akeno smiled faintly, crossing her arms. "Maybe, but that doesn't change the fact that you helped us. Whether you admit it or not, you care."
Lyra, standing beside him, grinned mischievously. "She's got a point, big brother. You can't fool me either—I see the way you're rooting for them."
Kael sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. "You two really don't know when to quit, do you?"
Akeno took a step closer, her gaze steady. "Stay, Kael. Just for a little while longer. You're a part of this now, whether you like it or not."
Kael met her eyes, the weight of her request pressing against the walls he had built around himself. He wanted to refuse, to turn his back and retreat into the quiet life he had worked so hard to create. But deep down, a part of him recognized the truth in her words.
"I'll think about it," he said finally, his voice barely above a whisper.
Akeno nodded, a small victory gleaming in her eyes.
As Kael turned to leave, Lyra tugged on his sleeve. "Big brother, can we stay just a little longer? I want to see how far they go. Besides, it's kind of fun being around them."
Kael glanced at her, his expression softening. Lyra's enthusiasm was infectious, and though he would never admit it, he found himself drawn to the ORC's unwavering determination.
Without a word, he walked back toward the training grounds, Lyra skipping happily behind him.
