Chapter 35: Blades, Claws, and Bonds

The morning sun cast long shadows over the dense forest clearing that Kael had chosen as the day's training site. Unlike the open field used for Issei and Asia's session, this location was secluded, surrounded by tall trees and thick undergrowth—a perfect place to train in stealth, speed, and precision.

Gathered in the clearing were Kiba Yuuto, Koneko Toujou, and Lyra. Each of them stood in stark contrast to the other: Kiba with his poised and elegant demeanor, Koneko with her quiet yet fierce aura, and Lyra with her ever-present mischievous energy.

Kael stood before them, his arms crossed, surveying the trio with a sharp gaze. "Today's training will focus on honing your unique strengths. You're all different in terms of ability, but that doesn't mean you can't grow together. Remember, synergy in battle is just as important as individual power."

Koneko tilted her head slightly, her golden eyes narrowing. "What about you?"

Kael smirked. "I'll guide and spar when needed. Don't worry, Koneko—by the end of this, you'll feel the difference."

Kiba's Training: The Art of the Blade

Kael turned to Kiba first. "Your speed and swordsmanship are impressive, but you rely too much on patterns. In a real fight, a predictable swordsman is a dead one. We're going to break that habit."

Kiba drew his sword, its blade shimmering in the dappled sunlight. "Understood."

Kael summoned a training construct, a humanoid figure with multiple limbs, each armed with a weapon. The construct moved erratically, attacking Kiba with unpredictable patterns.

"Adapt," Kael commanded. "Stop reacting to the weapon and start reading the opponent's movements."

Kiba nodded, his grip tightening on his sword. He moved gracefully, parrying and dodging the construct's strikes. However, the erratic nature of its attacks soon overwhelmed him, forcing him to retreat.

"You're too focused on the blade," Kael said. "Look at its stance, its balance. That's where the attack begins. Predict it before it happens."

Kiba took a deep breath, centering himself. He began to move differently, his strikes more deliberate, his footwork more precise. Slowly but surely, he started to gain the upper hand, landing a decisive blow that shattered the construct.

"Better," Kael said with a nod. "Now let's increase the difficulty."

He summoned two more constructs, each faster and more aggressive than the first. Kiba didn't falter, his confidence growing as he engaged them. By the time the session ended, he was drenched in sweat but grinning.

"Thank you, Kael," Kiba said, bowing slightly. "I'll keep refining my technique."

Kael's expression softened. "You've got the potential to be one of the best. Don't waste it."

Koneko's Training: Strength and Focus

Kael turned to Koneko next. "You're strong, Koneko. Probably stronger than anyone in your peerage when it comes to raw power. But strength alone isn't enough. You need precision, control."

Koneko crossed her arms, her expression unreadable. "What's the plan?"

Kael smirked and pointed to a row of boulders of varying sizes. "Break these. But there's a catch—you need to shatter them cleanly. No excessive force, no uncontrolled strikes. If you overdo it, you fail."

Koneko frowned slightly but stepped forward. She crouched in front of the first boulder, her small frame belying the immense power within her. With a swift punch, the boulder shattered into dozens of uneven pieces.

"Fail," Kael said bluntly.

Koneko's golden eyes narrowed. "It broke."

"It shattered," Kael corrected. "Your strike was too wild. If that were an enemy, you'd have wasted energy and left yourself open to a counterattack. Try again."

Koneko's frustration was evident, but she nodded. She moved to the next boulder, this time pausing to assess her strike. She took a deep breath and focused, her fist glowing faintly as she channeled her energy.

The punch landed with a sharp crack, splitting the boulder cleanly in two.

"Good," Kael said. "Now do it again. And again. Until it becomes second nature."

Koneko worked tirelessly, her punches becoming more precise with each attempt. By the time she reached the last boulder, her strikes were flawless.

Kael nodded in approval. "You're strong, Koneko. But remember, control is what sets a true warrior apart from a brute. Keep practicing."

Koneko gave a rare smile, small but genuine. "Thanks, Kael."

Lyra's Training: Agility and Tactics

Finally, Kael turned to Lyra. "You're quick, but you rely too much on improvisation. That's not going to work against a skilled opponent. You need a strategy, a plan."

Lyra grinned. "Come on, big brother. You know I'm great at thinking on my feet."

Kael raised an eyebrow. "Prove it."

He snapped his fingers, summoning a training field filled with obstacles—walls, pits, and moving platforms. At the center stood a construct armed with ranged weapons.

"Your task is simple," Kael said. "Get past the obstacles and disable the construct. But if you get hit, you start over."

Lyra's grin faltered slightly. "You're serious, aren't you?"

Kael didn't respond, his stern gaze enough of an answer.

Lyra sighed but stepped forward. She darted into the obstacle course, her movements fluid and agile. She leaped over walls, dodged arrows, and used the terrain to her advantage.

However, as she approached the construct, a well-aimed arrow struck her shoulder, forcing her to start over.

"Too reckless," Kael said. "You're fast, but speed means nothing if you don't anticipate your opponent's moves."

Lyra groaned but tried again. This time, she moved more deliberately, studying the construct's attack patterns before making her approach. Her movements became a blend of agility and strategy, and she successfully disabled the construct on her second attempt.

"Not bad," Kael said, a hint of pride in his voice. "But you still have a lot to learn."

Lyra stuck her tongue out at him. "I'll show you, big brother. Just wait."

Reflections and Resolve

As the sun began to set, casting the forest in hues of orange and gold, the group gathered near the brook to rest. Despite their exhaustion, there was a sense of accomplishment in the air.

Kiba leaned against a tree, his sword resting beside him. "Today was intense, but I feel like I've improved."

Koneko sat cross-legged on a rock, munching on a protein bar. "Kael's tough, but he knows what he's doing."

Lyra plopped down next to Kael, her energy undiminished. "You're such a taskmaster, Kael. But I'll admit, it was fun."

Kael chuckled softly. "Training isn't supposed to be fun. It's supposed to prepare you for the real world. Remember that."

The group fell into a comfortable silence, the sound of the brook and the rustling leaves filling the air. For Kael, this moment was a reminder of why he had chosen to stay in Kuoh—to guide and protect those who would one day shape the future.
