Chapter 38: Trial by Fire

The sun barely crept over the horizon as the group gathered in the training ground beneath Kael's shop. The air was still, the weight of anticipation heavier than the barriers surrounding them. Kael stood in the center of the arena, his arms crossed and his crimson eyes cold and distant.

"Today's training will be different," Kael began, his tone sharp and unyielding. "No advice. No feedback. No holding back. This is a survival exercise. You either endure or you break. Asia is here to heal you, but don't think that means you get to rest."

The group exchanged nervous glances. They had already experienced Kael's power, but his cold demeanor now was different. This wasn't the mentor who guided them with sharp words and careful corrections. This was a trial—one that promised pain.

"Form up," Kael ordered.

The Opening Salvo

The group spread out, their movements tense and deliberate. Rias took command, signaling for Kiba and Koneko to engage first. Akeno and Issei hung back, providing ranged support, while Rias herself prepared to coordinate their efforts.

Kiba dashed forward, his sword gleaming as he aimed for Kael's flank. Koneko followed closely, her fists glowing with raw strength. Kael didn't move until the last possible moment, his body twisting as he avoided Kiba's blade with ease. His hand shot out, grabbing Koneko by the wrist and hurling her into Kiba, sending them both sprawling.

"Too slow," Kael muttered, stepping forward.

Akeno's lightning crackled through the air, striking toward him in a flurry of violet arcs. Kael raised a hand, his crimson flames igniting and consuming the lightning before it could reach him. He retaliated with a burst of energy, forcing Akeno and Issei to scatter.

Issei gritted his teeth, his Boosted Gear glowing brighter as he activated it. "Boost!" The power surged through him, and he charged Kael head-on, aiming a punch at his midsection. Kael caught his fist with ease, the force sending a shockwave through the ground. Before Issei could react, Kael twisted his arm and swept his legs out from under him, slamming him into the ground.

"You'll have to do better than that," Kael said coldly.

The Pressure Mounts

Rias unleashed her Power of Destruction, the crimson energy erupting in waves toward Kael. He met it head-on, his own crimson flames clashing with hers. The resulting explosion shook the arena, forcing the others to shield themselves.

Kael's voice cut through the chaos. "Is this all you have? If so, you're already dead."

The relentless pace of the battle left no room for hesitation. Every time one of them managed to attack, Kael countered with brutal efficiency. Kiba's speed was rendered useless against Kael's precise movements. Koneko's strength couldn't match his raw power. Akeno's lightning was smothered by his flames. Issei's attempts to close the gap were met with punishing strikes that left him gasping for air. Even Rias, with her destructive energy, found herself outmatched at every turn.

Kael's strikes were merciless, breaking bones and leaving bruises. Asia worked tirelessly on the sidelines, her Sacred Gear glowing as she healed each injury. But there was no reprieve. The moment they were healed, Kael was on them again.

Pushing Beyond Limits

Hours passed, and the group's exhaustion was evident. Their movements slowed, their attacks grew weaker, and their coordination began to falter. But Kael showed no mercy, his attacks as relentless as ever.

Kiba panted, his sword trembling in his hand. "I… I can't keep this up."

"Yes, you can!" Rias shouted, her voice firm despite her own fatigue. "We're not giving up!"

Kael's gaze swept over them, his expression unreadable. "Show me your resolve. If you can't survive this, you'll never survive Riser."

Akeno gritted her teeth, summoning every ounce of her power. Her lightning crackled more fiercely than before, and she directed it at Kael with renewed determination. Issei, despite the pain coursing through his body, stood beside her, his Boosted Gear glowing brightly.

"Boost!" Issei shouted again, his energy surging as he charged Kael once more.

Kiba and Koneko joined the fray, their movements sharper despite their exhaustion. Rias stood at the back, her Power of Destruction swirling around her as she coordinated their attacks.

For the first time, Kael hesitated, their combined efforts forcing him to step back. But his hesitation was brief. With a burst of power, he unleashed a wave of crimson flames, scattering them once more.

The Breaking Point

By the end of the day, the group lay sprawled on the ground, their bodies battered and bruised. Asia knelt beside them, her hands glowing as she healed their injuries one by one. Tears streamed down her face as she worked, the strain of the day evident.

Kael stood over them, his arms crossed. His expression was impassive, but there was a flicker of something in his eyes—pride, perhaps, or satisfaction.

"You've endured," Kael said, his voice softer now. "Barely. But you've proven that you have the resolve to keep fighting, no matter how hopeless it seems. That's the first step toward victory."

Rias pushed herself up, her body trembling but her eyes burning with determination. "We're not done yet. We'll keep training until we're ready."

Kael nodded. "Good. Rest for now. Tomorrow, we'll push even harder."

As the group slowly made their way out of the training ground, Asia lingered, her eyes fixed on Kael. "Kael-san… was all of this really necessary?"

Kael's gaze softened as he looked at her. "Yes. They need to be ready for anything. The Underworld isn't forgiving, Asia. If they can't handle this, they'll never survive what's to come."

Asia nodded, though the worry in her eyes remained. "I'll keep healing them. No matter what."

Kael placed a hand on her shoulder, a rare gesture of comfort. "Thank you, Asia. Your strength is what keeps them going."

As Asia left to join the others, Kael remained in the training ground, his thoughts heavy. He had pushed them to their limits, but he knew it was only the beginning. The road ahead was fraught with danger, and he couldn't afford to let them falter.

For their sake, he would become the unyielding wall they needed to overcome. And when the time came, they would be ready.
