There's a soft knock on the door. "Honey?"
Henry looks up at his mom. He quickly folds up the last box before standing with a groan. "Yeah, that's pretty much everything." His room is a complete mess, but most of it will be thrown away once he's off to college. Everything he really wants to keep has been stuffed into the boxes taking up every spare surface of his bed. "I'll start bringing stuff out to the car." He says, already grabbing the heaviest box.
When he gets out there, Dad's already waiting to help load the trunk. He shoves it in carefully, then follows Henry inside for more boxes. "Are you nervous, Buddy?" He asks, sounding unsure himself.
"I guess." Henry shrugs. He picks up two lighter ones this time. "I mean, Jen moved out and she hasn't died yet." Then again, she's nothing like him. Where Henry's taking the slow route of going through college step by step, she jumped straight into the military. It did her good, taught her how to defend herself in the big city she lives in now, but she's always been like that. She's always had her head on tighter than Henry.
"I think you'll be fine." Dad says. The process of grabbing boxes and carrying them out becomes mindless now. "Just get your degree and start working toward your dream job."
Henry wants to say that it's not that easy. That he can't just get his degree with magic. He barely passed through high school and the fact he managed to apply for the college he wanted is nothing short of a miracle. And now, he'll have harder classes. More work to do and the added stress of paying for it.
He stops once they run out of boxes. Dad shuts the trunk and Mom comes back out to give him a big hug. "You'll do great, Honey. I know you will." Then, her eyes start to water and he hugs her tighter.
"Aw, Mom, it's okay. I'll visit over the holidays. I'm only a few hours away." Six hours, but it's fine. That's about the same distance as every other bigger town anyway. He's driven further for less.
"I know, I know." She laughs but he can still hear her sniffling. "Just...be safe, okay? You know who you are and no one can change that, okay?" She pulls back to kiss his cheeks, then she lets Dad say his own goodbyes.
"Don't forget to call us, okay? Tell us about your classes and all that, okay? Don't be distant like Jen."
Henry nods along. "I promise, I will. And if anything goes wrong, you'll be the first to know." Jen had her own reasons for going distant and he can't really blame her. Their town didn't exactly like her bold personality and they sure did try to make her "lady-like" but he's proud of who she is now. He's glad she's happy out in the city.
He just hopes he isn't making a mistake by trying to follow her footsteps.
Before he can talk himself out of this, Henry gives them both one last hug before getting into the car. Mom is still crying, but she waves him away as he starts the engine. He turns away from them at last and drives down the road, preparing for a six-hour-long drive to Logan.
It ends up being ten minutes longer, thanks to the pit stops he takes, but it's not too bad. He ends up arriving at the campus a little later into the evening. There's good parking at least and he's able to get everything settled before going right to his dorm. He checks to make sure it's the right one, then checks again, just to be sure. The last thing he needs is to cause a mix-up or something.
With a deep breath, Henry pushes his way into the door and he's immediately faced with his roommate for the next semester at least.
Several things strike Henry as odd and the biggest part is how...dressed up he is. He's wearing nearly a full suit, but it's dressed up in a way that looks more business casual. It looks good, but Henry suddenly feels like an idiot for his flannel shirt with stains.
The man turns, giving him an obvious look over before looking away without a show of his final judgment. "You're Henry Emily, I assume?" Before he can even nod, the man's going off. "I'm William Afton and since you didn't bother to show up on time, I've decided to arrange the room with the beset function in mind. The beds and desks will be symmetrical," he points to said furniture, "and any extra pieces will go on shelves or under your bed. We will share one wardrobe, my clothing on the top and yours on the bottom." They lock eyes. "For height difference."
"Um, yea-"
"You may put up posters and extra things so long as they aren't crude or pushy-" Henry has no idea what qualifies as 'pushy', "and I will not clean up after anyone else's messes. If you wish to be babied, then I will send you back to your mother. Is that reasonable?"
Henry can't think of a single word for a moment. His eyes go from the beds, to the wardrobe, to his roommate again. "Um...yeah. Yes, that's fine." He says at last, wearing an awkward smile. "I don't see any issues with...with that."
His roommate smiles, then turns back to where he was before Henry stepped in. "Good. Now unpack quickly. If you need help bringing your things up, then I can assist."
"Nah, it's fine. It's not far, so I'll just make the trips." The man doesn't stop him, so Henry just leaves the room.
As he makes his way down, he already feels the exhaustion weigh on him. He grabs as many boxes as he can without breaking his back, then carries them up to his dorm. He sets them down on his bed but then shifts them to the floor after his roommate gives him a look. He leaves to get the next few and by the time he's done, his arms ache and there's barely enough room to close the door. Thankfully, the other man doesn't say anything about it.
Now...to unpack. Henry sighs, cursing the long process that is moving out, but he starts opening boxes all the same. He doesn't move the furniture already there, more out of fear than anything, but he does manage to find a spot for most of his stuff. His tools all fit on his desk and his parts fit under the bed. He ends up having way less clothing than the other guy -he has to admit that he forgot his name, at this point- but his boots stay away close to Henry's bedframe.
The only real issue that comes up is the few extra items he planned to hang up. He slowly turns to his roommate, the man's long back already making him hesitate. Henry isn't really the crude type and he definitely doesn't have anything pornographic, but...what's pushy?
"Um..." He's about to say a name, but he hesitates. How bad would it be to call his roommate by the wrong name the day they met?
The man still turns, though, his intense gaze burning straight into Henry's face. "Yes?" He asks, his voice already sounding impatient. Or maybe it's just the accent. When Henry gestures to his last box, the man walks over, his eyebrows going up with interest. "What? I said you could hang things up."
"Yeah, but is it...bad?"
His roommate gives him a look. Henry wilts. "Shouldn't you be able to know for yourself?"
"Well, yeah, but I don't know what all you might be bothered by, ya know? I just want to make sure."
There's a long pause where Henry really thinks he messed up, but then the man pulls the box over and looks through it all quickly. It's relieving, honestly. He's glad his roommate at least trusts him enough to not look through every single item. Then, once he's finished, he turns back to his own stuff. "I don't mind you being religious, so long as you don't drag me to church with you."
"Oh, I wasn't planning on that!" Henry laughs. He relaxes as he starts tapping nails into the wall for his picture frames. "But I can't say anything for everyone else. This is Utah, after all." He chuckles, remembering Jen again. Poor girl had every single church leader at her neck, trying to get her to wear dresses to church.
"Oh? Is this town specifically religious?"
It makes Henry pause. "Well, yeah. It's not too bad, I don't think. People are pretty nice around here, but it's just...there's a lot of us. I mean, there are probably five churches in this town alone."
"...I see. Well, it's not as if there weren't religious people in Brighton." There's a ruffling sound and Henry turns just as his roommate takes off his shirt. He looks away quickly, flushing bright red. "It's late and if we plan to actually become successful in life, then we will need rest. I do have classes early, so I apologize if I wake you up, though, I don't intend to."
Henry gets off of his bed and shoves his boxes into a far corner, to be dealt with tomorrow. He tries to take make it to the wardrobe without looking at the man, but it becomes increasingly difficult. He gets another flash of pale skin.
"You don't sleep...naked, do you?"
There's a noise similar to a scoff behind him. "Don't be stupid. Of course not." Henry dares to look again and to his relief, his roommate is fully dressed again. He decides to forgo changing fully for tonight and just takes off his flannel. He goes back to his bed, left in an undershirt and jeans, and crawls in. "Is there anything else you need before we sleep?" His roommate asks and Henry looks at him. He's standing by the room's light switch.
Actually, there's one thing. "Um...I'm sorry, but what was your name again?" He's scared of the reaction he'll get, but to his surprise, the man just smiles, full of teeth.
It's a little unnerving, honestly.
"William. William Afton." Then, he turns the lights out.
Here we go again. If you like this and want more, I'll make more! I have a few things planned already, but I do love me some sweet feedback and motivation!
