Phase 4: Changes in Circumstances

January 25th, 71 C.E.

ZAFT Administration Offices, Aprilius One, L5

The day had begun like most did at the administration offices that the ZAFT organization had. Those at the offices got down to working on the day-to-day business that kept ZAFT running and going with the ongoing war. Most there weren't soldiers, but staff that had been picked by the National Defense Committee along with another who worked within ZAFT itself. It was the administrationstaff that worked with the committee to translate and deliver the orders deemed needed to the ZAFT troops. The efficiency of ZAFT's administration staff was the work of the one who was seen as the "unofficial leader" of the ZAFT organization. The man which had been the tactical leader of ZAFT was the reason the organization was in the fair position against the Alliance and its OMNI.

T he man who was seen as responsible for a good portion of ZAFT's success against the Alliance during the ongoing war was named Lanus Treize. He was a man that stood at close to six feet and had an average figure overall denoting good standing health. Lanus had short ginger-colored hair which he combed back most of the time. His hair wall it made Lanus look quite handsome according to man, more brought attention to his ice blue eyes. Not that Lanus was "in the market" as the phrase went when it came to women since he was happily married to the woman he loved. He was now forty years of age, though he looked a tad older which he attributed as effects from the ongoing war with the Alliance. But even with his age being young by most estimates for a major leader of an organization, Lanus still was the one who made sure ZAFT ran as smoothly as possible. Thus, he was seen as the tactical mind and genius that was behind ZAFT's success in the war so far.

Lanus had come into the administration offices at 0700 hours as he did every weekday for the current day. He didn't expect much of note to come up for the day as there had been nothing concerning building right now. There were a few potential issues which were being watched that involved the Alliance, but nothing urgent. The National Defense Committee had been brought up to date on current missions going on yesterday from what Lanus had been told. Lanus's Observation Zoni Intelligence or OZI was the group which reported directly to him and kept him in the loop about things which the public didn't know about. OZI agents had been listening to chatter, but there had been nothing of interest lately. There had definitely not been anything critical brought to Lanus's attention recently by OZI agents, which wasn't a bad thing in his mind.

With that in mind, Lanus had been going over general reports to make sure things were going according to standing expectations. That shifted when Lanus's secretary told him he had a call waiting and that it was urgent. Lanus was curious who could be calling in at this time and skip the normal chain of command which ZAFT had. It was a rare thing to happen with the system that Lanus and others had put in place for the organization. One of the few reasons that such did was calls coming from without ZAFT from others. It did happen which Lanus did take sometimes for the National Defense Committee with them being as busy as they were. Those on the committee tended to be fine with Lanus taking calls like those, his friend Patrick Zala who was the chairman of the committee included. So, Lanus told his secretary to put the call through to him so he could take it.

W hen Lanus connected the call, which his secretary transferred to him came up, Lanus was a genuinely surprised. The image of a man which Lanus had spoken with a few times was looking back at him. The man had short and silvery-grey hair on his head. His eyes were blue and gave a feeling of trust and experience to most. He also had a finely groomed mustache that was the same color as his hair. The man's name was Ben Moses, and he was from the Federation's military, specifically he was one of their Admirals that led them. Lanus had conversed with the man a select few times and each had been stressful due to circumstances at the time. Lanus didn't expect the call was social in nature, the Federation's leaders didn't do that much at all. He feared that whatever this call would be about, it wouldn't be nice and would spell out some kind of mess he would likely have to deal with. "Moses," Lanus greeted, "It's a rare thing for you to call me. I can only assume it has something to do with an event you will be telling me about, correct?"

The greeting Admiral Moses had received was what most would see as standard one to get from Lanus Treize. But it did strongly imply that Treize was unaware of what one of his mission commanders had been doing. It wasn't impossible though unlikely since Treize tended to keep an eye on what ZAFT did most of the time. He may be aware of some of what had occurred around Heliopolis due to the inference from ZAFT forces. What Federation intelligence had dug up suggested the specific ZAFT mission commander was a known troublemaker. If that was true, that would complicate things, and the situation was already turning out to be problematic. "Treize," Moses began with a firm tone, "I'll get straight to the point. What business does ZAFT have around Lagrange 3, specifically Orb's Heliopolis colony?"

Lanus blinked at the question being posed. It did say there was a specific subject being put out and it was about Orb's colony. As far as Lanus knew, there had been some from ZAFT set to looking into OMNI activity around Lagrange 3, but not the colony specifically. There had been increased traffic with OMNI as of late and so Lanus wanted that looked into so information could be acquired. Yet, with Orb's colony around there and the nation being neutral, the colony was to be given special treatment if it came into play. If OMNI should be using the colony to do something without interference from ZAFT with the colony's neutrality, then other steps would have to be taken. There would be several steps which would be followed to deal with such if it came up, but Lanus would have some he knew would handle things right do the job rather than those who were observing OMNI's movements.

Nevertheless, as Lanus recalled, there had been something mentioned yesterday about a question coming in from one of the teams on that task. The question was something about seeing something "odd" and wanting permission to look into further. Lanus had said there would need to be more information before an answer to the question was sent. He had expected that such was still under consideration, but now, he was wondering if someone had just gone ahead and done something problematic. There were some ZAFT commanders which were to be watched by others if they were given missions. It was part of the safeguards Lanus and others had installed to defend against rouge officers when they revealed themselves. "When it comes to Lagrange 3, there are a few teams observing OMNI movements at this time," Lanus iterated. "But with you bringing up Orb's colony, I can only assume something has happened beyond that."

The way Treize had replied said he really didn't know what had occurred yet. It implied that the ZAFT commander responsible for what had happened at Heliopolis had done such on their own. Treize could potentially help with mitigation with the incident that had started. While what happened to Heliopolis was bad, what could come around because of it was more dangerous. ZAFT forces infiltrating and attacking inside Heliopolis could be seen as ZAFT declaring war on them. That was concerning enough before it was revealed that Orb was a member of the Federation already. Thus, ZAFT actions inside Heliopolis were done against the Federation which was an extreme issue between the two factions which could blow up to be more. "Indeed," Moses replied, "ZAFT forces infiltrated Orb's colony and did damage before mobile suit attacked the port and entered the colony's interior. The event was brought to the Federation's attention shortly after it began."

Treize kept his face from showing expression at being told what had occurred. For ZAFT to just enter a neutral colony without permission was really bad, but to do damage while there was worse. Adding sending mobile suits to take the port and enter the colony was just "fanning the flames" as the old saying went. Observation orders were worded not to allow such things to be up to a mission commander, Lanus had made sure of that years ago to reduce potential issues from coming up. But it sounded like one had pulled the idea and caused a serious mess which could be very problematic if it wasn't handled immediately. "I was not aware of that occurring," Lanus returned and then inclined his head, "My heart-felt apologies that it happened. I'm willing to do all that I can to assist in mitigating the effects of this so we can avoid more serious issues between the PLANTs and Federation."

Moses had been sure that when Treize had been made aware of what was going on, he would be more than willing to help mitigate things. It was why he was contacted rather than the PLANTs' Supreme Council who would merely point fingers at who was to blame. Action was needed more than finger pointing being done to get things back on track. Treize was the kind of individual who would not delay but get to the heart of a matter the best he could. So, Moses nodded in appreciation, "I appreciate that you are willing to work with us to mitigate potential issues Treize." Moses brought up the data Federation intelligence had gathered on the incident, "From what our Intelligence Agency has been able to find, the ZAFT mission commander that is in the middle of this would be Rau Le Creuset."

Treize wasn't happy to hear that Creuset was involved in this incident that the Federation was coming to him for. Creuset was a fair mission commander most of the time, more for certain types of missions to get the best results. Observation missions weren't among those types and Lanus knew that well enough. It was why he had made sure Creuset's file had a note that he was not to be assigned observation missions among other types which he was not fit for. He would have OZI agents research how the man he been put on one without him knowing about it. Lanus felt there were some on the Defense Committee which could do that and get away with it for a time. And what was being referred to by Moses certainly sounded like a mess that Creuset would create and then faint ignorance about it when he was to account for what happened. So, Lanus sighed, "That is news to me," he remarked. "He isn't supposed to be on observation missions for reasons like you are iterating. I will have some look into that later when this incident is settled, I assure you."

Lanus paused for a moment wondering why Moses was coming to him about this. The Heliopolis colony belonged to the Orb Union, not the Human Federation. Granted the two were rather close on many things, but that didn't mean the Federation settled issues for them. It made Lanus curious as to why an admiral of the Federation's military would be working on this incident. Thus, Lanus hummed, "Forgive me if this sounds nosy, but why is the Federation helping Orb in this? Orb has shown themselves to be more than capable of speaking for themselves, which I certainly can respect. But I feel that the Federation stepping in means there is more to this than you have said."

The Orb Union hadn't made the point publicly yet, but they were a part of the Federation. Their application had been accepted and approved close to a year ago. It wasn't up to Moses to question why Orb's leaders hadn't made their membership in the Federation publicly known. Orb was a member of the Federation and that meant the Federation's military would protect them like any other member. That included Orb's colonies if they could come under assault by one of the other factions. Moses harrumphed, "You would be right about that, Treize," he returned. "It may not be public knowledge, but the Orb Union is a member of the Human Federation. I can't say why Orb's leaders haven't made it public knowledge, nor is it my place to say. But with Orb a member nation of the Federation, that would mean we in the Federation's military will protect their territories, including their colonies. With that in mind, perhaps you can understand how problematic this incident could end out being if not handled correctly I would hope."

The news that the Orb Union was a part of the Federation was the first Lanus had heard, even from what data ZAFT's intelligence division had provided. That fact made this incident far worse if it was handled wrongly than it had been before. It would require the Supreme Council to come into this as it involved actions against another faction. It would be a political nightmare which Treize wouldn't have direct involvement in, and he knew that. Once this got to the Supreme Council, they would take it over from him and he would rather it be that way most of the time. However, he didn't want Creuset to worm his way out of responsibility for this happening at all in the transition to the council and them settling this. "I certainly do understand the graveness of this situation, Moses," Treize admitted. "And the Supreme Council will have to be involved with settling things. Yet, before we have them come into this, I would like to deal with the commander that caused this mess. I promise that the ZAFT vessels around the colony will cooperate to the best of their ability with cleaning the damage up. I will reach out to them to make sure that will be the case, Moses. I want this settled the best possible as much as you do, I would imagine."

Moses nodded in agreement, "Yes, I figured that the PLANTs' Supreme Council will have to be involved before the end of this. Yet, I can sympathize that you would want to deal with the mission commander that started this yourself. A Federation patrol is already on route and should arrive in a few hours as they speed up their pace. I would rather not have fighting break out between the Federation and ZAFT right now."

Lanus didn't want fighting between the Federation and ZAFT any more than Moses did right now. The Federation's military strength was nothing to scoff at and was estimated to be higher than the Alliance. ZAFT was not prepared to fight both the Alliance and the Federation at the same time, Lanus knew that. There were some on the Defense Committee who didn't like the Federation, but they were in the minority. "I will reach out to those around the colony right after this call, Moses," Lanus assured. "I would rather ZAFT not be fighting the Federation's Military any more than you do. I will make it clear for those there to stand down and standby until further notice to make sure things don't get worse."

Meanwhile, back around Heliopolis, the Apitus came out of the colony's port as ZAFT's mobile suits were heading for the colony. Its four mobile armors zoomed out ahead of the OMNI vessel as it was leaving the port. Mu told Luke and Gale to not do anything fancy in this fight. It was clear that ZAFT was ready for a fight and the colony's "neutrality" wouldn't slow them down let alone stop them now. Mu had seen the last of the old model miner pods being picked off by the GINNs as his team began approaching. He had to admit the miners or whoever were in the pods was showing some serious courage as they were dying to try and protect the colony. They had to know that they had a slim chance at best to do anything to the GINNs to even slow them down. They were using machine guns against them even when those wouldn't do much to GINNs.

Krystal spotted a pair of GINNs shoot past them and go to the port. They did appear to attack where the colony port control center was. It wasn't needed and just killed people not involved in this conflict. There was little that any of them could do if GINNs got into the colony's interior. Mobile Armors weren't meant to operate well in gravity affected environments like colony interiors and on Earth. There was a small area in an Island-type colony which a mobile armor could work in without having issues keeping aloft. However, it did imply ZAFT likely knew about the G-Project and were after the prototypes. The personnel inside the colony would have to do something about the GINNs coming their way. Thus, Krystal focused back on the ZAFT mobile suits ahead of the team that they would be fighting.

The GINNs didn't waste time but began shooting at the mobile armors that were approaching them. Krystal and Mu quickly began employing their gunbarrels against the opponents they faced. The two Moebius armors engaged the GINNs as they could, avoiding the GINNs weapon fire. For a moment, Mu thought they could push enough of the GINNs back to get ZAFT to pull out of this mess. They were really taking a risk attacking Orb's colony as ZAFT had potentially declared war with the Orb Union. That could easily pull in the Federation to the war which would make the whole conflict much worse. The war had been going on for almost four years and would start its fifth in the next month. Adding a new element would very likely complicate the whole war and make it even less likely to end anytime soon.

That hope of things ending well for Mu and his team quickly vanished as Luke was taken out by a GINN. The sight of a comrade being dispatched by an enemy had become commonplace to Mu and Krystal during the war. It never became easier to witness when it happened comrades dying in battle. It wasn't unexpected that mobile armors would lose out to mobile suits, it was how the matchup tended to go. But the fewer of them there were, the worst the battle would go for Mu and those with him. And the fight was already one that they were at a disadvantage against ZAFT. While Krystal and he were doing okay against their enemies, things were getting harder as the battle was getting harder. Using their gunbarrels and linear guns was working somewhat against the opposing GINNs. Krystal did try to help Gail when a GINN got behind him, but wasn't able to stop the GINN from taken out another moebius armor

The battle kept going between the GINNs and mobile armors. The two ZAFT vessels kept back a bit while their mobile suits were doing the work. The mobile armors did put up a fight, but the two moebius armors did get taken down after a bit. The Zero armors were being tricky and were managing to not be nailed by any of the GINNs. The two were using their gunbarrels to keep the GINNs at bay and allowing them to use their linear guns. Yet, they were more just delaying ZAFT's advance in the battle. ZAFT could keep going until others potentially came around to stop them since those from the Apitus couldn't manage it. And things only became worse when the Apitus crashed into the colony's outer wall and detonated. That left Mu and Krystal on their own without any means to resupply their armors.

Mu was still fighting against a GINN when a sight caught his attention for a moment. When he looked, it appeared that unknown mobile suits were coming out of the colony and heading for the ZAFT vessels. He could only guess that it was ZAFT taking the OMNI prototypes to their ships. ZAFT forces had caught them off-guard and had been able to take advantage of that enough to get the G-Weapons. Although Mu only counted three machines when there should be five in total. That could mean that at least two could still be under allied control inside the colony, though Mu couldn't say if that was so. But things inside the colony didn't seem to be doing much better than those fighting outside. Mu checked with Krystal and was glad to find she was still alive and fighting.

Krystal was as frustrated as Mu with how things were going in this fight against ZAFT. Their two comrades had been downed by GINNs and none of the enemy suits had been taken down in exchange of the losses. The ship that was to support them had been destroyed with crashing into the colony's outer wall. Then three unknown mobile suits had come from inside the colony heading for the ZAFT vessels. It said that their allies inside were in as much if not more trouble than they were. Put simply, they would be getting no form of help from any allies that may be alive inside the colony. And Krystal feared if something didn't change, then Mu and she would be facing an inescapable problem of ZAFT coming at them without them being resupplied. Things didn't look much better as two GINNs and another of the prototype came from inside the colony heading for the ZAFT ships.

Nevertheless, Mu was surprised to see three bright flares coming from the lead ZAFT vessel. After that was visible, the rest of the ZAFT mobile suits broke off and headed for the two ZAFT vessels. The action confused Mu as it didn't make tactical or logical sense to him for ZAFT to pull back at this point. They had the advantage in this and there was little which could change that right now. Mu felt that he and Krystal were missing something important about the current situation. "They're retreating? At this point," Mu questioned. "Something isn't right about this. They wouldn't just pull back for no reason when they were winning against us."

Krystal had been listening as Mu had been asking questions over the team channel. He wasn't the only one who had questions about ZAFT's seemingly sudden retreat from the battlefield without a visible reason. It made little to no sense for them to pull back with the gains they were making. From what Krystal had seen, at least four of the G-Weapons had come out of the colony and headed for the ZAFT ships. That meant ZAFT had captured four of the five prototypes and likely killed those who had tried to stop them. Krystal brought her zero armor to be near Mu's, "Mu, are you okay," she asked. "I doubt that I need to say that things aren't looking great for us right now."

Mu knew things weren't going well for them. They had lost most if not all allies, they could depend upon for help to the best of his knowledge. ZAFT suits may have drawn back, but their ships hadn't turned to leave the area. That meant the fight was likely not done since they weren't going away from the colony. Mu couldn't guess a reason they would still be around as they had gotten most of the OMNI prototype mobile suits. Unless they were set on getting the last one which he hadn't seen, they had more reason to leave the area. But the little good news they had was they both were alive. "Yeah Krystal, I'm fine for now," Mu replied. "But it looks like we're all that's left."

"Yeah, I noticed it's just you and I left. Luke and Gale were taken down and the Apitus crashed into the colony." Krystal paused as things were still bad and worse than she had stated to Mu. There was no help near at hand that they were aware of which they could depend upon. "I doubt it needs to be said, but we're in a tight spot right now. There is no help we can turn to right now. We don't know if any of the OMNI personnel in the colony are still alive after whatever ZAFT has done. To say we lost this battle would be an understatement as we were creamed by them in this. And yet, after we were being creamed, they pull back, it makes no sense." Krystal hesitated for a moment, "Any idea why ZAFT forces just suddenly retreated? They have little reason to do so that I can come up with."

Krystal had put their situation rather aptly even when she had been blunt about it. They had lost bad, and it was hard to put it another way. The two of them were the only survivors from the crew they had been with. From what Mu had seen it was likely there were few if any alive within the colony who were their allies. Those that had been working on the G-Project wouldn't let ZAFT have the fruits of it if they could do anything to stop them. They would've fought to the last of them to protect the G-Weapons from being taken. However, there was the possibility there were a few alive as only four prototypes had come out of the colony, not five. That implied there was still one of the G-Weapons left that wasn't under enemy control. Such could be some of the little good that was going for them right now.

Yet, Krystal had a point with ZAFT behaving oddly with them pulling back as they had for the moment. They had most if not all seeable advantages they could get right now other than perhaps time. Attacking a neutral colony would bring consequences upon ZAFT, though Mu couldn't say what those would be. Orb wouldn't let this event be dismissed, not with the reputation they had earned for themselves with the other factions. If that wasn't enough of a reason to discourage ZAFT, then the colony being near Federation territory should. Their patrols were prompt and regular, one could just about set their watches to how prompt they could be. The Federation wouldn't just look the other way with something like this, Mu was sure of that if they came around.

Mu would bet that ZAFT wouldn't want to draw attention from the Federation onto them if they could help it. That made the attack on the colony all the odder. Granted, it was clear their target had been the prototype mobile suits they shouldn't know about in the first place. But they either thought they wouldn't face consequences or believed they would be able to get away with what they had done. Neither potential explanation made sense to Mu as they were both so unlikely the chances of either happening was ridiculous. Yet, trying to explain ZAFT's actions was pointless for the time being. The question he and Krystal needed to answer was what they would do next.

At the same time, the ZAFT mobile suits had all returned to their assigned ship. Athrun followed Miguel back to the Vesalius left to his own thoughts. He hadn't liked leaving Rusty behind in the colony. Athrun knew there wasn't much of a way that could've been changed at the time. And that Tyler would keep an eye on his friend was as comforting as the point could be with circumstances as they were. Rusty would be on his own, but he would have Tyler and potentially others he trusted to help him if needed. Athrun didn't doubt Tyler would do everything he could to get Rusty back to ZAFT territory as he could. But it still put Rusty in enemy-controlled territory until that could be managed which Athrun wasn't comfortable with.

Nicol had been waiting to see who else would return to the Vesalius. There had still been around half the team that had been in the colony when he had left with Dearka and Yzak. Nicol hadn't much liked leaving while Athrun and Rusty had still been in the colony. They were his friends after all, and he didn't want to lose them to this war. His friends knew the risks as well as he had and had accepted them just as he had. Nicol had been trying to figure out what he could do to go back and help his friends. He would have to convince Commander Creuset, but Nicol would somehow manage that. If he had to make the Blitz usable, then Nicol would do what he had to in order to make the suit workable.

However, when Nicol had been about to go find Commander Creuset, he heard that the last of the mission team were returning. So, he headed to the hangar to greet his friends instead of going to search for the commander. It was a relief to him that the others were returning to the Vesalius after how things had gone. Granted, most things had gone according to Commander Creuset's plan inside the colony, but not everything. Nicol was well-aware that rarely did a mission go exactly according to the plan it was using. But Nicol felt there had been more going on outside of the plan than was being taken into account by the majority. The point nagged at Nicol and wouldn't leave him be. He couldn't say why he had the feeling there was something serious being missed. There was no standing evidence that was the case that he'd seen as of yet, but the feeling wouldn't go away.

When Nicol reached the pilot lounge above the hangar, he was further relieved to see two GINNs moving into docks, there was also one of the OMNI prototypes coming into the hangar as well. Yet, after that, Nicol didn't see the fifth prototype as he would expect to with all returning back from the colony. The absence of the last target of the mission concerned Nicol as it said something had gone wrong. It brought back to Nicol's mind that things hadn't gone according to plan and the consequences of such things. There had been risks before the mission had started and all those on the mission team had been made aware of them. Yet, the hope had been things would be smooth enough that most if not all the team would be able to come back. Nicol was hesitant to inquire who it was that hadn't been able to make it back to the ships.

Nicol waited as the three machines that had returned to the Vesalius moved into docks so their pilots could exit them. As he watched, he spotted Miguel and Lester coming out of the GINNs. Out of the prototype came Athrun which had Nicol wondering and worrying that Rusty could be among those that hadn't made it. Losing Rusty would be a harsh blow for Athrun and Nicol as they had been friends with Rusty. The friendship between the three of them had started during ZAFT's survival course they had been required to take. The three of them had quickly become a team that worked together during that time and came to trust one another. Their team had been the only one to be able to fight off the proctors and not get "killed" once during the course. Nicol didn't want to accept that Rusty had been killed without more information, but the nagging worry was haunting him.

Miguel and Lester exited their GINNs and headed toward the pilot lounge ahead of Athrun. He had assured them he would handle telling Commander Creuset about what had come up and forced them to fall back. Neither had an issue with him doing that, they preferred not to be the ones that revealed the Federation was potentially involved now with the mission. However, they were stopped by Nicol who was in the lounge as they entered. "Miguel, Lester," Nicol began keeping his voice even. "I'm glad you made it back, but I only saw one enemy prototype come with you. What happened to the other? And is Rusty, okay? I didn't see him come in with any of you."

Miguel knew that when Nicol learned of Rusty's fate, he would take it as hard as Athrun was. The three were friends, that much had been obvious after seeing their interaction with one another. Granted, it had sounded like Athrun had to watch as Rusty was killed by the tones he'd said it in, but a loss was still a loss. And Miguel felt that Nicol would blame himself for leaving with the enemy prototype that he had brought back to the Vesalius ahead of them. Nicol had done as he should, but losing a friend caused one to question that and if more couldn't have been done. So, Miguel's gaze fell to the floor, "The last machine was kept by OMNI for the moment," he admitted. "As for Rusty, I'm sorry to have to tell you, but he was killed. I know that you've mentioned you, Rusty, and Athrun were good friends, so this hurts to hear."

Nicol felt an icy feeling shoot through him at Miguel saying Rusty had been killed. He didn't want any of the members of the mission team to die during the mission. But Rusty, not coming back stabbed Nicol's heart since he had been a personal friend. Rusty and Athrun had been able to outsmart him, which none of the others he'd come across by the end of the first day had managed. They had shown kindness to him and asked if they could help him during that course. Nicol had been somewhat hesitant at the time to give them the chance, but he had in the end. He had never regretted taking the chance with Athrun and Rusty as they had watched his back as he did for them. Their team had come out on top at the end of the course with their teamwork. Nicol's head fell slightly at Miguel's statement, "I see," he got out. Nicol swallowed hard trying to ignore the pain coming from Rusty's loss. "I wish that wasn't the case, but thanks for telling me and not hiding it to spare my feelings."

As painful as it was to understand Rusty was gone, Nicol wanted to wait for Athrun. He knew the pain he was feeling would be similar if not less than what Athrun was experiencing right now. Nicol knew that a friend comforting you was better than others doing the job. So, he would do that for Athrun, and they would come to terms with Rusty's loss together. Thus, Nicol waved for the two to go ahead, "You two go on ahead," he said. "I'm going to wait here for Athrun. I think it would be best if I were here to greet him with Rusty not coming back. I can understand his pain better than others currently, and I think it will help me in this as well to be honest." Miguel nodded and had Lester follow him to the locker room so they could change back into their uniforms.

Nicol waited for Athrun, which was one of the longer periods that he could remember in a while. The pain of Rusty's loss was weighing on Nicol and bringing him down even when he didn't let it show outwardly. He could only imagine Athrun suffering much as he was with knowing Rusty wasn't going to be with them anymore. Nicol wanted to be there for his friend during the hard time they would have to press through. He was of the opinion that getting through painful things was best done with help from others who cared. It was a few minutes which felt like much more that Athrun came into the lounge. Nicol could see instantly Athrun was not feeling the greatest or good much at all. It was understandable with Rusty being killed, Athrun would take it as hard as Nicol was if not worse. So, Nicol forced a smile, "I'm glad you made it back, Athrun," he greeted. "Not everyone did by what I've been told, which is truly unfortunate." Nicol stopped for a moment, "I know I don't need to say it, but I wish Rusty was here with us, I really do, likely as much as you wish he was."

Athrun appreciated that Nicol had been in the lounge to greet him. He really needed a friend's company to get over what circumstances had morphed into. He was grateful that Rusty was alive, even if he was back in the colony right now. But Athrun didn't like leaving Rusty behind as he had with leaving with the others. The only reason that Athrun was marginally okay with it was Tyler would be helping Rusty. He trusted Tyler with Rusty's life as much as he would with his own. Yet, not knowing if Rusty was safe and not under the suspicion of OMNI personnel still plagued him. But Athrun didn't want Rusty being left behind passed about the Vesalius or the Gamow. It was best that Rusty was thought gone for the moment until things changed as much as Athrun didn't like that point. However, he couldn't call himself Nicol's friend and not tell him Rusty was alive. He felt Rusty would want Nicol to know he wasn't dead too, and Nicol would understand the need to keep the point to himself. So, Athrun closed the distance between him and Nicol, "I do wish he was here," he agreed. "But I would ask what I'm about to say you keep to yourself, Nicol."

Nicol was curious about what Athrun wanted to tell him and keep to himself. They wouldn't be the only ones that would be hurt Rusty had been killed, they would just be in the most pain. And yet, while there was pain in Athrun's voice, it wasn't the same as Nicol had been trying to hide. It told him something was not as stated or had been missed. Thus, Nicol nodded slowly in agreement, "Sure, I can keep what you say to myself. What did you want to tell me? It sounds serious if you don't want others to know at the moment."

Athrun took a deep breath before he continued, "Rusty isn't dead."

Nicol's eyes went wide at what Athrun had just said. Miguel had been completely convinced he was speaking the truth when saying Rusty was killed. If Athrun was right, then he knew something Miguel hadn't been aware of and like few others would know. Nicol wanted Athrun to be right about Rusty being alive, words couldn't say how much he wanted the point to be true. However, if Rusty wasn't dead, then why didn't he come back with Athrun, Miguel, and Lester? There was no logical reason that Nicol could come up with that would explain leaving Rusty behind was a good idea. "Are you sure Athrun," Nicol uttered. "I would love nothing more than you being right about that. Yet, if Rusty is alive, why would he be left behind in the colony?"

It was a question Athrun had been asking himself over and over the whole way back to the Vesalius. If not for Rusty being with Tyler, Athrun would've gone back and gotten his friend rather than leave him to be potentially discovered by OMNI. So, he nodded, "I spoke with Rusty when the others weren't around, so I know he is alive." Athrun looked away before he kept going, "As for your question, I've been asking myself the same thing the whole way back. If not for two facts, I would've gone back and picked up Rusty."

Nicol had figured there had to be more to the situation if Athrun had left Rusty behind. Nicol was convinced that Athrun was telling the truth about Rusty being alive. He was happy that their friend was not dead, even if he was separated from them currently. But Athrun mentioning facts that had him leaving Rusty behind had Nicol concerned. Athrun wouldn't have left Rusty behind unless there was a beyond serious reason to and even that was odd. Nicol couldn't think of much that would have Athrun doing that. "What facts are you referring to Athrun," Nicol asked in a flat tone. "I fear whatever they are will make the current circumstances far more problematic than they already are. And I doubt I need to remind you how much of an issue attacking even a part of a neutral colony is. Nor have you forgotten the promise we made with Rusty back during the survival course any more than I have. So, tell me, what facts you better be cursing had you leave our friend behind in the colony?"

The question Nicol had ended with was one Athrun had expected. He would be demanding the same in Nicol's position. The promise that Nicol had brought up was one he, Athrun, and Rusty had made to one another. That promise was they would never leave either of the other two behind if there was any other option, even if there was a real risk to their lives. To Nicol, Athrun leaving Rusty behind could be seen as a betrayal of that serious promise. It was why Athrun was uncomfortable with the situation when it came to Rusty though he felt it would work out somehow. If there was ever one you could count on to manage doing something difficult or even impossible, Tyler was your guy to do it. And Tyler promising to help Rusty was the only reason that Athrun hadn't worked to convince Rusty to come with him. So, Athrun took a deep breath, "I have not forgotten the promise we made," Athrun stated clearly. "It is why I have been having one of the hardest internal conflicts I have ever had in my life with this."

Athrun was a tad mad that Nicol would even think for a moment that he would just abandon their friend any more than he would him. It had felt like his heart had been torn out when the grenade had gone off where Rusty had been. He had been sure Rusty had been killed by that event. So, Athrun glared at Nicol, "You think I wanted to leave Rusty behind," he posed. "I had to watch a grenade go off where I was absolutely sure he was located. I was convinced beyond any doubt that Rusty had been killed after seeing that." Athrun's voice caught for a moment before he kept going, "I only learned Rusty was alive when Miguel, Lester, and I encountered two unknown mobile suits in the colony. And that happened when one of them rammed into me and I hear Rusty calling out to me." Athrun had to take a moment to slow his breathing which had sped up as he had been speaking. "I thought I was imagining things for a moment, even when I was hoping with every fiber of my being I wasn't. I faced off against the unknown suit again and found I wasn't imagining things. Words can't say how overjoyed I was upon finding out Rusty was still alive, so don't accuse me of abandoning our friend Nicol."

Nicol knew he shouldn't have even suggested Athrun would leave Rusty behind. He had wanted to correct himself a moment after the accusation had come out of his mouth. Athrun had replied quickly not giving him the opportunity to apologize for what he'd accused him of. It was clear that Athrun had been hurting with believing Rusty had been killed and having to watch the point. However, the mention of two "unknown" mobile suits in the colony had Nicol having a double take. There was only supposed to be five prototypes that OMNI had been building from the Commander's data. Granted, Nicol had been suspicious of the data after seeing it himself, though he hadn't voiced it at the time. He couldn't see OMNI not going to great lengths to prevent leaks from occurring with this project of theirs. And from the friend Nicol had in ZAFT's intelligence division had not been aware of the kind of data the commander had presented. Nicol had planned on telling Rusty and Athrun when they got back and saw what they thought about that.

Nevertheless, Athrun could say more about the unknowns after he calmed down a bit. Nicol had said some things he shouldn't have, he would admit it and apologize for what he'd said. Nicol inclined his head to Athrun, "You are right," he admitted. "I said some things I shouldn't have, and I am really sorry. You wouldn't leave Rusty behind any more than you would me or we would you." Nicol hesitated for a moment, "I spoke in the heat of the moment, please forgive me."

Athrun realized he had been losing his temper just as Nicol had. They had both said hurtful things that they shouldn't have. It both said how strong their friendship between one another and Rusty was as well as how much it could set them off with extremes. The reason Athrun was telling Nicol that Rusty was alive was because they were friends. "Sorry," Athrun said, "I didn't mean to say you would accuse me." Athrun took a breath, "I just wanted you to know Rusty isn't dead as others will say. It wouldn't be right for you not to know as you are friends with Rusty and me. But for the time being, you need to keep this to yourself and not spread it to others."

Athrun paused as thoughts of Rusty's situation was coming back to his mind. While Rusty was with Tyler, that still put Rusty around OMNI personnel at some point in the near future. Most wouldn't agree or side with Athrun when it came to leaving things in Tyler's hands when it came to Rusty. He knew Tyler better than most would guess with just a cursory glance. Yet, convincing Nicol that Rusty was as safe as he could be with the circumstances as they were may be difficult. Nicol tended to be an understanding individual, but Athrun had taken a real risk in the choice he made. Some would call it a "leap of faith" with the chance he had taken, but it wasn't much of a leap for Athrun with how he knew Tyler. Nicol had never met Tyler and knew nothing about him, so he wouldn't have the same knowledge and trust Athrun possessed. "Rusty isn't alone or left to his own devices," Athrun remarked. "There is another which will provide help for him should the need arise. The one around Rusty is extremely capable and will be able to assist and keep OMNI from finding out Rusty to be a ZAFT pilot."

Nicol wondered about this "other" person that Athrun was referring to which could help Rusty if that became needed. And he felt it wasn't a matter of if, but of when the need Rusty would have for assistance with being back in the colony. There was a possibility that some of the OMNI personnel were alive even with the efforts of the mission team. OMNI wasn't known for showing kindness and mercy to those that were not their allies. Of the few reasons OMNI could have to keep Rusty alive was to get information from him. The means which they would use to try and extract information could vary, but from what Nicol had read, OMNI rarely used nice methods. So, whoever this other person was, they would have to be able to stay ahead of OMNI to keep Rusty from getting caught and be treated horribly. That was a lot to ask of just one person to be able to do in order to help Rusty when needed. "How well do you know this other person you refer to Athrun," Nicol questioned. "What you expect of them is rather high for any person to accomplish by themselves."

If the one who was helping Rusty was most other people, Athrun wouldn't have the confidence he would need to entrust Rusty's well-being to another. Yet, Athrun knew Tyler beyond just as a friend with Tyler being one of his best friends. He knew Tyler was the type of individual that went above and beyond for those he helped. Athrun had personal experience with the lengths Tyler was willing to go for those he cared about and had promised to help. The other thing about Tyler was he had a knack of doing things others wouldn't expect and say shouldn't be able to be possible. Thus, he knew Rusty was in the best hands possible for his situation as it was for the time being. "The other is a friend I didn't expect to find around the colony," Athrun returned. "That friend is very capable and can keep ahead of OMNI as needed for Rusty's well-being. I would trust them with my own life and so, I will entrust them with Rusty's knowing they will treat it as they would with my own."

Whoever this friend Athrun was speaking about certainly sounded like quite the individual. For this friend to be around Orb's colony when ZAFT was doing their mission was either quite a coincidence or potentially arranged for something. It didn't matter in the end in Nicol's mind, but it was still an interesting question, nonetheless. If Athrun would trust his own life with this friend, then it wasn't as concerning to Nicol. He hoped that this friend would be able to help Rusty to get back sooner rather than later. But this individual with Rusty was the one they would have to depend upon to help their friend to stay out of the hands of OMNI. "If you are willing to entrust your life with this friend of yours, then I suppose that we can trust them with Rusty's," Nicol returned. "So, could you tell me more about these unknown mobile suits that popped up? Or perhaps I'll just listen as you inform Commander Creuset about them when you report to him."

Athrun nodded and moved forward so he could change out of his pilot suit, Nicol following a short distance behind him. Once Athrun had changed back to his uniform, he and Nicol headed to the Vesalius's bridge. He wasn't looking forward to having to report what had happened back in the colony's interior. Athrun had a general story in mind to give which Miguel and Lester wouldn't dispute. They believed that Rusty was dead, and it was better they thought that way for the time being. The two unknown mobile suits were still out there and would need to be addressed. Athrun knew that, even though Tyler, being a pilot of one of them didn't sit well with him at all. But there was little Athrun could do about that other than not mentioning he knew one of those piloting an unknown machine.

Athrun and Nicol came onto the Vesalius's bridge to find Commander Creuset at the tactical display table. Captain Ades was facing the table and the two seemed to be discussing things about the colony and likely the mission. Athrun approached the table with Nicol still behind him, "Commander, Rusty failed," Athrun stated evenly. He made sure to think of the feelings he had been having when he thought Rusty was dead. Athrun had to be convincing and make others believe Rusty was dead until further notice. "The last OMNI prototype was boarded by an OMNI officer from what I saw."

Rau turned to look at Athrun for a moment. The expression on his face said Rusty had indeed been killed by OMNI forces. The loss was regrettable as Rusty had potential by his profile ZAFT had on him. He, Athrun, and Nicol were among the brightest ZAFT had in the rising generation from what Rau had been able to see. However, Rusty not getting to the last prototype didn't explain the last three falling back instead of capturing the final prototype. Miguel had mentioned something about an "unexpected" thing coming up but hadn't gone into detail. "I see," Rau replied. "I am truly sorry about the loss of Rusty. It was my understanding you two were good friends before this, so the loss must weigh heavily on you. Yet another bright future taken away by OMNI and their war, truly a terrible thing." Rau paused for a moment, still curious as to why the three had fallen back instead of taking the last machine. "Yet, I am curious why the three of you fell back instead of capturing the last machine, especially with Rusty dying for this already. What was the unexpected thing which came up that Miguel mentioned?"

Athrun felt that the commander had bought Rusty not making it through the mission as he'd hoped he would. Explaining the two unknown mobile suits should be simpler than saying what had happened to Rusty. The two machines had been so different than the other prototypes that it was more than notable. Their movement and smoothness of it had stood out enough to strongly imply they had better operating systems even if they weren't complete. "Two unknown mobile suits appeared as we were starting to deal with the last prototype," Athrun stated. "They didn't match the data you showed us during the mission brief. One did seem somewhat similar to one of the OMNI prototype units, but it wasn't the same."

Rau perked up at hearing what Athrun said about there being "unknown mobile suits." The data he had been given had been very convincing when he had glanced it over. And for the majority of the mission, the data had been right on point. It made Rau wonder if OMNI knew of the two machines' existence or if they were in any way responsible for their construction. Should OMNI had been aware of them, why weren't they in the data he had gotten from his "confidential" source? It was possible for Morgenröte to have produced units for themselves, but Rau would've thought OMNI would be informed of such. Two unknown mobile suits with the newly developed technology OMNI had come up with could and likely would be dangerous if waved off. "Two more machines, you say," he questioned. "And they weren't similar to the data we were working with for the mission?"

Athrun shook his head at the question from the commander. While the black unit that Tyler and Rusty had been in had appeared similar to one of the prototypes, it proved it was different. The movement of both machines had been far better than the Aegis had started with. He could only imagine that Tyler may have made some modifications to the operating system. Heck, Rusty could've done something to it to get it better. Yet, either of them should only be able to get it functional like Athrun had managed. Athrun couldn't have modified the Aegis go move that smoothly in the time he had back in the colony. "Not really by what I could tell," Athrun replied. "Yet, their capabilities with movement were better than any of the prototypes. Maybe if we had more than ten minutes, we could get something that might come within spitting distance of that kind of performance."

Miguel wouldn't disagree with Athrun's iteration about the two unknown mobile suits. They had definitely been performing better than the last enemy prototype had they had been working against. "I would echo what Athrun says sir," he toned in. "I thought that Athrun, Lester, and I could handle them and still capture the last prototype. We each took one of them and it appeared we may be able to manage it. Yet, the two unknown machines were moving better than the last enemy prototype. It was like the two had complete operating systems installed or something like that."

For there to be prototypes with potentially complete operating systems was certainly concerning, Rau wouldn't dispute that. But if OMNI had made a working OS or anything close to such, they would've installed it on all of their prototypes. That lent credence to the machines not being produced by OMNI but by Morgenröte. However, Morgenröte had little reason interfering with ZAFT's operation and helping OMNI in this that Rau could figure. He had a nagging feeling there was more to the two machines than was being stated. The two unknown machines would have to be dealt with before this was all over. They would be nothing but trouble if they were left alone and not addressed. Rau may have to go out and see these two mobile suits for himself to get a good feel for them. "That certainly is problematic," Rau remarked. "Was there anything else to report?"

Athrun knew he had to mention that the Federation had a presence around the colony. That changed the whole point of the mission as the Federation's military could use this as a reason to attack them. While the Orb Union may not be a member of the Human Federation, that didn't mean they couldn't request assistance from them. The Vesalius and Gamow would have trouble against an average Federation patrol. It would be three going against the two ZAFT vessels and that would be difficult. The Federation's advantage with stealth technology gave them, fighting against them was not simple and tended to end badly. So, he nodded in response to the commander, "Yes, I found convincing evidence that said the Federation has a presence in the colony."

Rau did not like hearing the Federation could be around the colony. The Federation's military could interfere with the mission at the colony against OMNI. Not only that, but they could also drag the situation out and bring the Supreme Council which would complicate things for Rau. Whatever this evidence that Athrun mentioned would need to be able to convince him to be considered. "Evidence you say," Rau said evenly, "What kind of evidence did you find, Athrun?"

"There was evidence of Federations agents having been around Morgenröte, sir," Athrun said. He knew he couldn't give the truth of where he got the information about the Federation. Saying that a friend was around the colony could and likely would disqualify Athrun from being involved in any operations with it. Athrun didn't want to be potentially left out of things should they go wrong in the colony. "It matched ZAFT data has on the markers that Federation agents have been around in systems."

That was troubling as it did say that Athrun's expectation about the Federation being around the colony was correct. It meant time was of the essence now as there would likely be Federation military forces on route to the colony. With that in mind, it made sense why the three decided to fall back and leave the colony without capturing the last prototype. The Federation's involvement would need to be taken into account before further action was taken. "I see, " Rau remarked. He put a hand to his chin, "Then your decision to fall back was sound and wise under the change in circumstances. While it would have been good to capture the last enemy prototype, this information was more critical than that task."

Rau paused, thinking to himself on what the best course of action for ZAFT in the area would be. If the last OMNI unit wasn't captured, then OMNI would do all they could to take advantage of that and get it somewhere to start mass-production. Thus, it would be better for ZAFT to capture or destroy the suit while it was in the colony rather than later. However, with the Federation likely on the way, going back into the colony was more than just risky. The real question that needed an answer was how much time was there before the Federation arrived and messed things up. If it were a few hours, then some could be sent into the colony to see if they could handle the two unknown machines and the last OMNI prototype. Yet should it be less time for the Federation to arrive, then it would be wiser not to go back inside the colony and get caught there. Rau doubted Athrun would have anything to hint at the general time frame it would be for the Federation to reach the colony.

Upon consideration, Rau felt it would be best to have pilots be ready when the Federation did arrive in case things took a seriously bad turn. Ideally, it would be great to have the newly acquired prototype mobile suits should be made ready for combat. Yet, depending on the time there would be before the Federation came, that may not be possible. But attempts to prepare them should be made. So, Rau faced Ades, "Ades, have all suit to be resupplied as they can. The newly acquired machines are to be made as ready as possible for potential combat. Pass that message onto Zelman as well." Rau turned to Athrun and Nicol, "The two of you are to do what you can to get the machines you brought back as close to combat ready as you can."

Rau figured while preparations were being done, he could go see the unknown mobile suits for himself. If they were of interest, he could work on capturing one and bringing it back to the Vesalius. He should be able to do such in the shortest time it would take the Federation to get to the colony. "While you and Zelman see to the preparations, Ades," Rau began, "I will head out in my CGUE and investigate these unknowns mentioned. I should be able to deal with them if it comes to that." Creuset then got up from his chair and headed to the hangar of the ship to get into his CGUE so that he could test these unknowns that had popped up.

Ades watched as the commander left the bridge, not liking what he had said he would be doing. Ades agreed with making preparations should the Federation come around the colony. Having to deal with the Federation's military forces was never a simple thing by the end, history had proven that. Resupply would be straightforward enough for the GINNs on both vessels and could be finished within the hour. Getting the enemy prototypes combat ready was a different matter which estimates were more difficult to make. Ades had been told by Zelman that Elsman and Joule had already mentioned the prototypes' operating systems were messy to put it mildly. That would take time and work to change which was a variability that ZAFT had no control over right now.

Nevertheless, Ades was concerned with Commander Creuset heading out in his CGUE. It sounded like he was going into the colony himself. Doing so at a time like this was risky even for someone as skilled as the commander. With the trouble that there had already been within the colony, there was no reason to assume that it would be different for the commander. Should the Federation be on their way, once they arrived, ZAFT would need as many good pilots as they could get. Commander Creuset was the best pilot the Vesalius and Gamow had to depend upon when the Federation appeared.

Surviving an encounter with the Federation was more due to them not attacking to kill their opponents. But every instance that ZAFT had with the Federation had ended with defeat worse than any against OMNI. Ades had seen the records of the encounters ZAFT had against the Federation and had been uneasy about them. Having the prospect of facing firsthand experience fighting the Federation was already starting to weigh down Ades. Admiral Treize specifically told captains to do what they could to avoid having to pit their vessels against the Federation when possible. The National Defense Committee would echo the same general idea as well. And yet, the incident with the colony forced the Vesalius and Gamow to face that idea soon enough.

Ades had doubts about the mission Commander Creuset had insisted was needed before. He was starting to wish he had heeded the doubts and said no to the mission. Ades knew he should've held his ground on getting further instructions from ZAFT administration or the Defense Committee. The two bodies were to advise ZAFT groups/teams if there was concern of potential political fiascos so such could be avoided. Zelman had had brought up the specific protocol about reaching out to either of the groups before going ahead with the mission. Yet, Creuset had pushed and gotten Ades and Zelman to forego that protocol which had led to the current mess. And now, the two ships would have to face the trouble heading their way and hope they could manage to weather the storm. Ades told the pilots on the bridge to head to the hangar and help with the resupply and work on the new machines the best they could. Once they left, Ades became lost in his thoughts of what could be done to put the Vesalius and Gamow in the best positions for when the Federation forces arrived.

As Captain Ades was lost in his thoughts, the Vesalius's communications officer received an alert, which told of an incoming message to the ship. What caught the officer's attention was the message was being listed to be a priority communication from the homeland. Specifically, it was a call from within ZAFT's administration. That was odd since those from that group normally only delivered orders or were advising on a situation. They certainly didn't call directly to a ship without a viable reason and purpose for doing so. Thus, the officer turned to face Captain Ades, "Captain," they said, "we are receiving a priority call from the homeland."

Ades came out of his thoughts and glanced at his communications officer. For the Vesalius to be receiving a priority call from the homeland at this time didn't sit well with him. He felt it was likely due to what had happened to the colony. The timing was too convenient not to having something to do with the mess Ades was seeing. And with Commander Creuset just having left in his mobile suit, he wouldn't be around to explain why he had insisted on having a team infiltrate the colony. That would force Ades to take the brunt of whatever was about to come for a decision he had not been for when explained to him. So, Ades sighed knowing that delaying the call wouldn't help. "Connect the call," he ordered. "Let's see what reason some from the homeland is reaching out to us."

The officer connected the call to the main display and Ades drew back slightly. The one that had come up on the screen was none other than the unofficial leader of ZAFT, Admiral Treize. The chance of the admiral calling a vessel personally was extremely rare as far as Ades was aware. For the Admiral to be the one calling had Ades rather nervous that he knew about what had happened with the colony somehow. Should the Admiral be aware of the event already, he would be the one that the Supreme Council would be more inclined to listen to. So, Ades saluted since it was the best thing he could think of doing in this turn of events. "Admiral," he greeted, "I'm surprised that you would be calling the Vesalius personally, sir."

Lanus wasn't happy with the situation he was now dealing with and trying to mitigate. He didn't want to take that out of Ades or Zelman as they hadn't been the one to push things to what they were. They should've followed protocol and reached out to ZAFT administration or the National Defense Committee. However, with Creuset involved, Lanus wouldn't hold any captain responsible for not doing something that they normally would. Creuset was the kind of individual that was very good at pushing for what they wanted and ignoring rules set to prevent problems. There were notes on Creuset's ZAFT file about this personality problem he had so captains were aware. But Creuset's personality could be very deceptive at first glance so was easy to mistake. However, there wasn't the time for pleasantries, "Ades, where is Creuset," Treize asked. "He and I need to have a talk about what has been going on recently."

Ades was getting worried that the Admiral was referring to the infiltration mission that the commander had insisted on. The tone the Admiral had said he was serious and wasn't the most pleased at the moment. And that the commander was out away from the ship as of minutes ago meant the Admiral couldn't talk to him as he wanted. It was clear that Admiral Treize wasn't happy about what Creuset had insisted on doing after showing the data to Ades and Zelman. "My apologies admiral," Ades began, "But Commander Creuset just headed out minutes ago, so isn't available to speak with you."

Lanus would really prefer things not get worse with Heliopolis than they already were. That Orb was a member of the Federation and ZAFT had infiltrated their colony was bad. It was more than enough of a reason for the Federation's military attack the Vesalius and Gamow without further provocation. Lanus didn't want to have good crews and people lost because Creuset had heeded one of his whims. But it seemed like he'd been just a tad late on potentially preventing Creuset from going and stirring the "hornet's nest" that he had already shook up with what he'd done already. "I see," Lanus replied. "Do try and recall him after this please. It is best he does not go into Orb's colony with things as they stand."

It was obvious to Ades that the admiral knew of what had happened to Heliopolis. No report from the Vesalius or the Gamow had been sent to the homeland, yet that Ades was aware of. So, he was curious as to how the admiral could've learned of what events had occurred and more how they played out. He did have his communications officer try and get a message to the CGUE before focusing back on Admiral Treize. "Forgive me for asking, Admiral," Ades began, "But how do you know of what has happened at the colony already? Neither Zelman nor I have sent a report back to the homeland yet. We fully intended to do so shortly, but things have been busy enough that sending communications has been difficult."

The conversation with the Federation's Ben Moses hadn't been pleasant for Lanus. The subject had created work that now those in ZAFT's administration were now dealing with which hadn't been on their docket. Lanus had already heard grumblings from those closest to his own office and hadn't liked what he'd heard. And by the sound of it, Creuset was already stirring up more trouble which would only exasperate the situation with the Federation that was already worrisome. "Some from the Federation have reached out to me and were asking for an explanation about what ZAFT was doing around Orb's Heliopolis," Lanus iterated. "They were none too happy as they informed me of the infiltration that ZAFT did which wasn't authorized. That wouldn't have been approved if it had been brought up as it should have with either the Defense Committee or those of us at the administration office."

Ades knew now that the infiltration mission wasn't a good idea. Looking back, it was obvious that doing that to a neutral colony would come with consequences that would be harsher than any benefit it could give. Yes, the OMNI prototype mobile suits were impressive, Ades would admit that with what he'd seen. But now Admiral Treize was reaching out personally looking into the infiltration that Creuset had insisted upon doing. It implied that those in the colony had somehow gotten a message out to the Federation before communications had been jammed. That the Federation had talked with Admiral Treize said they didn't want this incident to lead to something worse if it could be avoided. "I'm sorry to hear that sir," Ades remarked. "I really did say that we should check with the homeland before going forward with the infiltration mission. But Commander Creuset insisted it would take too long, and OMNI would be able to move their project before we got a reply."

Lanus had suspected Creuset had been the one to push for the infiltration into Heliopolis. It fit Creuset's problematic behavior that came up from time to time. This was one of the more annoying examples of the behavior's outcomes. The issue in this instance was the outcome put ZAFT in a potentially disastrous position. "I appreciate that you did try to follow protocol Ades," Treize stated. "You and Zelman are a credit to ZAFT with your service. As for Creuset, when he returns, he is to reach out to ZAFT administration before he does anything else. They will direct him to me so we can discuss what happened with the colony. For the Vesalius and Gamow, I'm giving you direct orders that until further notice from myself or those from ZAFT administration you are to stand down and stand by. You are not to send out or deploy any mobile suits even to defend against the Federation. When the Federation arrives around the colony, you are to cooperate and assist them in their efforts. Do I make these orders clear Ades?"

Ades could see that the admiral was not pleased with what had gone down with the colony. However, as Admiral Treize had a tendency to do, he would give the opportunity to redeem oneself after a serious mistake. Helping the Federation in this would prove those who had done damage to the colony saw the mistake they had made and wanted to make it right. And that the order was coming from the admiral himself could be used to stand up against Commander Creuset if he pushed for something different. So, he nodded, "Crystal clear, sir," Ades repeated. "The Vesalius and Gamow are to stand down until further notice. We are not to deploy any mobile suits either even for defense against the Federation until otherwise stated by you or others from ZAFT's administration staff. We are also to assist the Federation with their efforts involving the colony when they arrive. I will make sure Zelman is fully aware of these orders as well."

At the same time, Mu and Krystal were still cruising around the area around the colony. They were looking for any hint or sign which could explain why ZAFT had pulled back from their attack. ZAFT had the upper hand in the fight before they had fallen back from the colony. It made no sense for ZAFT to pull out of the fight when they were winning as they had been. Granted, some of the G-Weapons had been seen heading for the two ZAFT vessels. Yet, that made retreating even odder as they had no reason not to finish the job they had started. There had been little to stop them from doing what they wanted with the colony that either Mu or Krystal could figure. And their retreat made both suspicious there was more going on that they knew of. That the colony belonged to Orb should make a difference for ZAFT's actions. However, their attack implied this ZAFT group couldn't care less that the colony was Orb's. Even should that be taken into account, the fact was moot by this point. ZAFT had attacked Orb's colony, and the nation would likely go to the PLANTs' Supreme Council about this event.

Krystal had been attempting to contact any of the OMNI personnel within the colony. She hadn't had any luck with reaching anyone and there were a couple of reasons that could be the case. The most likely explanation as to no communication getting answered was the colony's com-exchange had been damaged by ZAFT during their attack. A colony's com-exchange was the equipment which allowed signal to get past a colony's outer wall which was built to block radiation among other things. ZAFT GINNs had attacked around the port control which was where the com-exchange tended to be for colonies. Thus, neither Mu nor Krystal knew what could've happened within Heliopolis with ZAFT sending some inside.

Mu had been searching for any sign or hint as to why ZAFT could've retreated when they had. There had been nothing out of the ordinary that he'd seen while cruising around. Mu had thought for a few seconds that he'd seen something out of place, but whenever he'd looked back, there had been nothing. He felt like he and Krystal were being watched by some, whether that was by ZAFT or others, Mu couldn't say. Orb's Heliopolis was essentially on the edge of Federation controlled territory. There was always the chance the Federation could be observing with how close the colony was to their territory. Orb may not worry about that point, but OMNI had to take that into account with the G-Project as far as Mu understood. But the Federation wasn't the issue at the moment, though they could be soon enough.

Nevertheless, as Mu was flying around searching for answers, a strange jolt shot through him. The jolt was familiar to him as he'd had it a few times before this though none of them had gone the best if they had ended well at all. Those events had one factor in common, one which Mu wasn't fond of in all honestly. That commonality was an individual by the name of Rau Le Creuset popping up in some shape or form in the events. Mu didn't have any good experience with the man from the time he'd unfortunately had to know him. Creuset was a troublemaker, the signs of that had been obvious for Mu to ever mistake. Whenever the "masked" man would appear, things became harder and/or went to hell. Mu had tried taking down Creuset the last two times he'd popped up, but hadn't managed to do it, though he had not been "beaten" by the man either.

For Creuset to appear around Heliopolis at a time like this was bad, Mu wouldn't argue with that point. However, it also felt too calculated for the chance to be a coincidence either. As much as Mu disliked and cursed Rau Le Creuset, the man had an irritating knack for timing when it came to him being in a specific place at a specific time. The current situation was a good example, Creuset being around when ZAFT had attacked and stolen most of the G-Weapons. The man somehow got himself involved in messes that had some sort of benefit for him in whatever twisted scheme he had in his crazy head. And Mu doubted the man was here for a different reason than that after the attack on the colony. So, he swung his zero around and began flying in the direction the jolt had hinted at.

As Mu swung his armor off the path it had been on, Rau was observing him doing from a distance away. He was piloting his ZGMF-515 CGUE model mobile suit. The CGUE model suit was seen as a multi-purpose machine much as the GINN but was geared towards being a commander unit with it being a more limited production model. It was developed after the GINN model had been established and put to the mass-production lines. One of the major differences between the CGUE and GINN models was the CGUE had better mobility and a different distribution of armor plating for the suit. The CGUE's arsenal had a 75mm assault machine gun like the GINN would carry. It also would have a shield with a built-in 28mm Vulcan cannon for interception or pushing enemies back. Then the CGUE also had a heavy blade much like hit GINN did for close-quarters combat.

Rau had quickly spotted the two zero armors still going around after he'd left the Vesalius. It had been a moment after heading out from the ship to have the annoying, yet amusing jolt run through him. The jolt came to Rau whenever he came to be around Mu La Flaga. He hated Mu with a passion, Rau wouldn't deny that point. The man was a living reminder of what had brought Rau into the existence he had been suffering in, one of the few that was still left. However, Rau had found enjoyment in messing with and taunting Mu that keeping him alive had its interest for him. He hadn't expected Mu to pop up around Heliopolis, but Rau wouldn't say no to playing with Mu since the opportunity was presenting itself. Rau wondered if Mu had figured out their connection which existed. "Can you sense my presence Mu La Flaga just as I can sense yours," Rau posed. "This link can truly be seen as an unfortunate twist of fate, wouldn't you say La Flaga? But to whom is this twist the more unfortunate with this twist, you or me?"

Mu was scanning around for any sign or hint to give a warning that Creuset was about to strike. The masked man may be seriously irritating, but he was also a skilled pilot, Mu would admit the point even if he wished it, wasn't the truth. The real issue wasn't Creuset's skills as a pilot even when they were a problem. It was more that Creuset had a knack unfortunately of causing trouble and making any situation worse when he appeared. He had split up from Krystal so she wouldn't be caught by potential surprise when Creuset attacked. Mu believed he could avoid a few attacks from the masked man when they came better than Krystal. The jolt had served as a moment of warning before Creuset would attack him. And Mu would take anything he could get to give him even a slight edge over Creuset.

It was a minute later, though it seemed longer than that when Mu got another jolt. Mu reacted by jerking his flight controls to the right as gunfire came him direction a split second later. Just as Mu came out of the barrel roll he'd gone into, he spotted the silver CGUE coming his direction. The CGUE seemed to have been using the colony's structure to hide its approach to Mu from what he could tell. It would fit Creuset's normal style of fighting, approach from the shadows before he would strike at his target. Mu was irritated Creuset had a knack for striking those like him as he did. He was one of the few who could catch Mu by surprise with his skills and abilities with spatial awareness. Mu shoved his throttles forward and charged at the CGUE, "You damn back-stabbing scum, that's you Rau Le Creuset, isn't it," Mu shouted over an open com-line. "I should've known you had something to do with the attack on the colony, it is something you would do without hesitation and would enjoy."

Rau could tell he had gotten under Mu's skin as he had hoped to. He had always enjoyed irking Mu and getting a rise out of the man. It was in essence a way to get back at Al Da Flaga which Rau wanted to do when he could. So, Rau smirked as he fired his machine gun at the red zero armor, "Now now Mu," he started, "You're being rather testy, not that I'm against that since it is amusing. But while you think my appearance is irritating, I could say the same for you. You always seem to pop up and get in my way, Mu. We seem unable to avoid our paths crossing as they do. As for what has happened to the colony, that is the fault of your allies doing work within it. Did you honestly think that OMNI creating mobile weapons would go unnoticed for all that long?"

Mu was forced to weave out of the line of fire from the CGUE's machine gun. His gunbarrels' thrusters did help him roll out of the way of Creuset's attacks. After the second barrel roll, Mu deployed two of his gunbarrels and had them go out halfway and bring out their auto cannons. He knew the auto cannons wouldn't do notable damage to the CGUE should they make contact, but they could hold the machine in a small area so Mu could use his linear gun. The match Mu was in was one he knew he was at a disadvantage to put it mildly. Creuset had a better arsenal to use against him. He was more skilled with a mobile suit than Mu could work with in a mobile armor. It was the luck Mu had which was giving him a fighting chance against the masked man and he didn't kid around about that. Mu kept fighting against the CGUE, hoping that Krystal would pop up and help him. The two of them working together had a better chance in this battle than Mu alone had.

As if Mu's hope was a wish, the CGUE was hit and forced to turn and defend itself from the blue zero armor which had appeared. Words couldn't say how grateful Mu was that Krystal had popped up and attacked Creuset. Mu had been hanging on against the masked man, but he was being pushed back slowly but surely. Should he be forced fully onto the defensive, Mu knew he would be hard pressed to change that with Creuset involved. But with two of them fighting the masked man, that should be somewhat more manageable than Mu alone. If they could push Creuset back and away from the colony, then they could better assess how bad things could be within the colony. It was obvious that something bad had occurred to those inside the colony. Four of the G-Weapons leaving the colony clearly under enemy control had made that clear. So, the sooner that Creuset could be dealt with, the better for Mu and Krystal.

Shots came from a different direction which made Rau pull back a bit. When he glanced in the direction the attack had come from, he saw a blue zero armor zooming toward him who was likely the one who had interrupted Rau taunting Mu. Normally, he wouldn't have much of an issue fighting the two mobile armors, even if they were a more annoying model. They were as irritating flies buzzing around trying to demand attention from him. Their auto cannon rounds were more annoying than concerning for a CGUE or even a GINN. The linear guns were what could cause issues if they landed right, but avoiding the guns were simple enough should one be paying the needed attention. Rau wanted to taunt Mu a little longer, but there were things for him to get to which he couldn't really put off for that much longer. The two unknown machines should be assessed more which Rau needed to do. It was unlikely that Mu and his companion would be going anywhere for a time. So, Rau could come back and resume the taunting later when he wanted.

Rau drew back and headed for the colony to "lead" on his two preys. They were showing they were more than eager to pursue him wherever he went. Flying off toward the colony got the desired result with the two mobile armors took up chasing him. Rau had the two following him as he traveled close to the colony. He did so enjoy leading willing annoying pests on into a trap, the chase just made the trap springing and hitting the pests so much more entertaining. The trap he had in mind would be sprung inside the colony. Doing the point there would allow Rau to shift to dealing with the unknown mobile suits efficiently. He dodged the shots from the two armors as he headed for the space rock the colony mined resources from. Rau had fun leading the two pursuing him for a good period of time around the space rock. That section of the colony had plenty of places to hide and strike at the pests he had the attention of.

After some fun playing some "hide-n-seek" with the two, Rau moved away from the rock and went back towards the colony. He was checking to make sure the two were still following when his attention was turned to something else. Rau was forced to shift his attention forward as alarms began going off. Bolts were heading at him he had to wrench his suit's flight controls to one side in order to evade them. Once he came out of the roll, Rau twisted around and fired at the two armors to get them to back off for a moment. The two armors backed off a bit which gave him some breathing room to work with. Rau then faced forward again and scanned around for whoever had attacked him a moment ago. However, the scan of the area directly behind Rau showed there was nothing. He specifically looked over the colony's outer walls where there were places mobile weapons could hide in.

Rau was sure the shots he'd avoided hadn't been conjured by his imagination, they had to come from somewhere. Yet, he could not spot any hints of the new attackers. That had a nagging feeling come to Rau which he didn't like at all. Shots coming from seemingly nowhere was one a specific signature of none other than the Human Federation's military forces. In Rau's opinion, it was a taunt of the Federation, whether intentional or not with their use of stealth technology. It was the one technology that was created and controlled exclusively by the Federation. The technology had given the Federation an unarguable advantage for them against the other two factions. Rau had hoped ZAFT could've gotten an example of the technology by this point, he knew there was enough within ZAFT that wanted to use it. But there had been no success in acquiring any examples from the Federation.

The unseen attacks were one of the few signs of the Federation's military potentially being present in the area. The Federation appearing around the colony at this time was close to the worst-case scenario in Rau's mind. The Federation poking their nose into things that weren't their business was bad enough on a good or even decent day. If they popped up here after the mission to steal OMNI's prototypes, then that would be more than problematic for Rau and others. It would appear to them that ZAFT had instigated the attack, and OMNI had little to do with the damage. The Federation would drag the PLANTs' Supreme Council which would complicate the whole point further. Rau would rather not have the council get involved too early before he could come up with enough "evidence" to prove his decision had been the right one to enough on the council.

It wouldn't be a complete shock if those in the colony had reached out to the Federation, not with how friendly Orb was with them. However, communications were supposed to have been blocked before they could do such a thing. Yet, it was possible that the colony may have gotten something out before the electronic interference had been fully in place. Rau knew it was better to assume things were worse than they really were than to think things were going fine. Underestimating the Federation came with a price which tended to be high in the end. ZAFT mobile suits were superior to OMNI mobile armors, but it wasn't the same with Federation space fighters. Rau would rather not be forced to pay that price if he could help it. Thus, Rau figured it was best that he forces a field change before the potential space fighters did more than they already had.

Mu had gotten more than frustrated with Creuset leading him and Krystal on a chase after him. He felt that the masked man was trying to draw them into a trap so he could have an advantage and attempt to kill them both. However, Mu couldn't let Creuset escape and potentially go into the colony and do more damage. Mu and Krystal had been doing what they could to slow the man down but hadn't managed to accomplish the task. The masked man had seemed to enjoy play with them around the mining section of the colony for a time. Yet, the man had eventually pulled away from the rock and went back toward the colony structure. Of course, Mu and Krystal did follow Creuset after he pulled away from the space rock. They were trying to close the distance when things changed. The change came in the form of rounds being sent at the CGUE from ahead of it.

Mu couldn't see where the shots had come from his armor's optical sensor feeding his forward display. Mu glanced down at his sensor display hoping to see something, anything to hint at where the shots had come from. If someone else was jumping in to fight against Creuset, then Mu wouldn't be complaining. To tell the truth, Mu knew that he and Krystal could really use help against ZAFT right now. That the new attacker was unseen had Mu wondering if the Federation didn't have some forces around the colony. By what the Apitus's captain had said, Federation patrols would come around the colony once a day or so. If the Federation's patrol happened to come around at this time, it would be nothing short of impeccable timing. Mu had nothing against the Federation as some within OMNI seemed to. If they were willing to help, then Mu would welcome their involvement and be among the first to apologize for what happened to the colony.

Mu was ripped out of his thoughts when the CGUE surged forward away from the two mobile armors. Mu took up the chase, but Creuset had his suit zoomed ahead and looped around to face the colony's port entrance before he could catch the masked man. The man rushed into the colony port while Mu and Krystal tried to catch up. For Creuset to enter the colony was a very bad thing, Mu wouldn't argue that point. The CGUE would have an advantage over the zero armors around the colony interior if it came to a fight. But it seemed that the man would force a change of field for the battle. "Damn it," Mu cursed. "Creuset has gone into Heliopolis's interior! That complicates things far more than they already are."

Krystal could see Mu was irritated about the development of the CGUE appearing and fighting them. She wasn't happy about the change in events any more than Mu was. However, they needed to keep in control and not let their emotions get the better of them in this instance. Creuset was known for getting under another's skin and then rattling them before he would go against them. It seemed to be a part of his strategy when fighting, throw off the other and then take advantage of that. Mu should know better than to let one like Creuset get under his skin, more so with Mu having gone against the man before this. Creuset was a threat, Krystal wouldn't dispute that fact with what she'd just observed. They would have to pursue the man, but they couldn't do so recklessly. That was what Creuset would want so he could lead them into some sort of trap. "Calm down Mu," Krystal stated. "Don't let the man get under your skin. He wants to get in your head so he can toy with you. We will go after him, but we have to keep in mind he is likely leading us towards a trap he can spring upon us."

Mu took a moment to calm down from being worked up. He knew that Krystal was right about not letting Creuset get under his skin. The man was good as getting into another's head and then leading them on to where he wanted them. And with Creuset going into the colony, he would have plenty of opportunities to work with to do something potentially deadly to Mu and Krystal if they followed blindly. The zero armors would be at a disadvantage within the colony interior, there was no question about that. But they couldn't just allow Creuset to go in and not chase him as he would cause damage if left to his own devices. "Yeah, I know, but thanks for the reminder," Mu replied, "We need to be careful going inside the colony though. Our armors will be at a disadvantage in the atmospheric environment the colony has within. Plus, the guy doesn't fight fair if he doesn't have to, and there seems to be few that force him to do so." Mu swung his armor to face the colony's port entry, "So, let's get after him before he potentially wipes out whatever allies we may have left." Mu then flew his armor to the entry and zoomed inside. Krystal followed closely behind Mu, knowing they were going into a risky situation that could kill them if they made a bad move.

Okay, I'll leave off there for the next phase. Goodness gracious, there is an amount to go over for this phase! So, let's start with the first scene of this phase since it is different and important. I decided to introduce both Treize and Moses earlier than in the previous version for a reason. The part they play, mostly in the background, is important to highlight for this story. On Treize's part, I wanted to show that he does a lot more for ZAFT than is implied by his title. Yes, the PLANTs' National Defense Committee may set the goals and missions for ZAFT, but it is Treize and those under him that translate that into plans to get such done. Moses does a similar job as Treize just for the Federation. The other thing I want to point out with the first scene is that the military of the factions do backroom meetings to try and prevent things from getting worse.

Treize understands the problems that come with what Creuset did to Heliopolis. He knows that Creuset is a troublemaker when given by an opportunity. It is why Treize had notes put on Creuset's profile to not be given certain types of missions which give that type of opportunity. Then on the other side of the point, Treize put in place a checking system that ship captains at to use when something comes into serious question. Potential "political" issues bring in more complications and Treize knows that.

Let's move onto the battle scene in this phase with Mu and Krystal. I know in canon, there is little shown of this battle between ZAFT and OMNI. I think this is a shame as there is material for those of us that like the story and knowing more if you ask me. In this battle, I wanted to show that the two sides fighting are doing things which are getting people killed. Neither side bears the full blame for what happens to Heliopolis. Another thing I wanted to point out was both sides know the environments they can have a better advantage over the other in. However, I will not deny that mobile armors tend to lose out to mobile suits as this battle just displays.

Shifting for a moment to the scene between Nicol and Athrun, there are a few things I wanted to highlight. First, Athrun is agonizing over leaving Rusty back in the colony, which makes sense with the two being friends. I want to state this doesn't mean Athrun doesn't trust or believe Tyler won't do his utmost to keep Rusty from being caught. Athrun trusts Tyler at his word, but that doesn't translate into no worry over what Rusty could be facing. And I can't blame Athrun for being worried about a friend, especially one that he had thought dead but found out was still alive. He doesn't want to lose Rusty for real after finding out he didn't die in the factory, I respect him for that.

Second in this scene, Nicole isn't a worry wort as he may come off as. He may seem timid and quiet, but as the phrase goes, "the quiet ones are the ones to watch out for," I also want to point out the friendship which I didn't go into in the last version that is between Athrun, Rusty, and Nicol. The three bonded during ZAFT's survival course as mentioned. Those that are soldiers can feel free to correct me should I be wrong, but those you go through battles of survival with become those you can trust like family. It is the same idea for Nicol as Rusty and Athrun saved him and teamed up with him during the course. So, it is completely understandable that Nicol wants to be there for Athrun with Rusty being "dead."

Third, I want to touch on their conversation a bit as it is telling. Athrun telling Nicol that Rusty is alive is an act of friendship, plan and simple. Nicol was caught up in the moment when he accuses Athrun, but this is a friend's life in potential danger, so cut him some slack. Nor do I blame Athrun for getting somewhat mad at Nicol for the accusation. The two are talking about a friend they both care about and don't want to lose. The conversation also shows just how much faith Athrun has in Tyler. You readers know how capable Tyler is with the story, but others are not aware of what Tyler can do, so please keep that in mind. In this instance, Nicol is willing to trust Athrun's judgment when it comes to Tyler at this point.

Let me move to the brief that Athrun gives to Creuset. I will say that Athrun pulls off an amazing act to convince the rest that Rusty is dead, I will give him credit for it. In this briefing, you readers get the first hint that Creuset has connections outside of ZAFT that aren't good if others knew about them. The other point which I will admit is a type of foreshadowing, is the admittance the Federation is involved already. Rau knows the Federation will make it harder for him to worm his way out of responsibility of what he pushed for. The masked man is a risk taker, but he isn't completely stupid, so he is aware there is a point it is best to not push further. The other thing I wanted to point out in this scene before getting into the next point is that Ades and Zelman aren't blindly loyal or follow Creuset's orders. They will question them if they are crazy enough.

Now, moving to the conversation between Ades and Treize as that is new and has a purpose. I want to start by stating what may be obvious, but most in ZAFT respect and show deference to Treize. The man made ZAFT what it is at this point and has them in the fair position against OMNI. However, personal calls from Treize are beyond rare and normally only happen when an outright serious issue is in play. I did want to show that Treize can be serious when he sees the need as he may not come off that way all the time. This conversation does show that Creuset's data wasn't from ZAFT as he implied it was for the mission into the colony. But Treize knows how to get a message across when he needs to, this scene should show that well enough.

In the final scene of this phase, we go back to the battlefield outside the colony. This fight does kind of come up in canon but doesn't really do much in the story other than show a connection between Creuset and Mu. Canon really doesn't go into detail about the crossings and connection between Rau Le Creuset and Mu La Flaga. I will be touching more on the idea as the story keeps going for this version. But this scene also displays Creuset's worry about Federation interference. Rau knows that underestimating the Federation and its military won't end well.

In conclusion, while this phase originally didn't exist and only a select few parts were written in the last version, it has a purpose. I certainly hope you readers are enjoying this newer version of the story as it is coming. It feels better than what has come before and it is getting cleaner which I won't say no to. As I always do at the end of a Phase, please some of you take the time and write a review and tell me what you think. Make comments, ask questions, or make criticism of what has been written. I read it all even if I don't reply to it specifically. Should you not want others to see what you want to say, you can PM me and say what you wish. Peace out until the next Phase!
