Professor Layton Hit the road, Chapter 2

Parlour Interactions:

« This mirror is so polished I nearly greeted my reflection! » Emmy exclaimed.

« A mirror reflects, but sometimes it can also complicate a problem. » Layton explained.

« And it can also reflect your biggest desires if Harry Potter is correct. » Sam commented.

« In that case damn Emmy, you are an egocentristic lady. » Max commented.

Xxxxxxx

As the group exited the parlour, they found the same maid from before. « Master Luke has been holed up in his room for a while now. I can't even tidy up in there. »

« Is this sort of behaviour typical of Luke? » Emmy asked.

« Oh no. He's usually quite lively. He's such a good little boy… If you ask me, it's because his mother has been gone for so long. That's hard on a child, you know. He's quite mature for his age, but he's a rather sensitive boy. » the maid replied.

« Where's the juvenile's room? » Sam asked.

« Upstairs, at the end of the hall. » the maid replied.

« Thank you. » Layton thanked the maid.

Xxxxxxx

After the four climbed the stairs, they found themselves in front of a door, presumably belonging to Luke's room. Layton knocked, but no response came. « Maybe he's sleeping. » Emmy assumed.

« Guys, I have the idea of the prank of the century. Get me some lockpicks and I'll use a vuvuzela! » Max exclaimed.

« We're NOT using a vuvuzela. » Emmy said with a cold tone.

« Besides, we don't have one, Max. What were you going to use? » Sam commented.

«What!? Oh come on! How could we forget the demonic vuvuzela! It was my favourite gift! » Max wined.

« Who are you? » a voice came from behind the door.

Layton was the first to react. « Ah, my apologies. My name is Hershel Layton. I'm a friend of your father. Could we talk for a moment? »

« Certainly. But first, you'll have to solve my door puzzle! » the voice, belonging to Luke presumably, responded.

« What is with everyone in England and puzzles? » Sam asked annoyed.

Layton laughed slightly. « I see. Luke means to test our mettle with a puzzle. »

« That's so cute professor! » Emmy exclaimed.

« More like annoying and tedious. » Max complained.

« Oh come on Max, it can't be more annoying than an actor attempting to use hypnosis to gain massive popularity with no skills of its own. » Sam frowned.

« If you are truly the esteemed Hershel Layton, then this puzzle should be no problem. You will have 15 seconds to perform a specific action in front of the door. » Luke explained.

« If in the next 15 seconds that door won't open I'll feed you to Martian lions you brat! » Max exclaimed angry.

« Don't listen to him kiddo. But seriously, how are we to know exactly what it is we're supposed to do? » Emmy asked.

« You may search the area outside my door as much as you like. » Luke explained.

« And when we're ready to perform this action, whatever it may be, we should let you know? » Layton asked.

« Correct. But I will tell you now, you can't do anything to solve this puzzle. » Luke continued.

« You know, for an age where most kids stick their fingers up their nose and play videogames designed for individuals 18 years or older resulting in parents complaining that the videogame genre is too violent, this kid puzzle is quite cryptic. We've been freelance police for 20 years and we've never found a puzzle this complex. » Sam frowned.

« In that case, how about we search the area? » Emmy asked.

« Ladies first. » Sam said.

Xxxxxxx

After a while, Layton was ready. « We're ready, Luke! »

« You know what you have to do? » Luke asked.

« I believe so, yes. » Layton responded.

« Professor, are you sure? » Emmy asked.

« Then let's begin. Please stand in front of the door. Remember, you can't do anything to solve this puzzle » Luke said.

« Not with that attitude! » Sam exclaimed.

For 15 seconds the four did absolutely nothing. « Shouldn't we…uh…do something? » Max asked. Layton remained in silent.

The silence was interrupted by Luke. « That's what you had to do! »

« What? Were we supposed to breathe or something? » Sam asked annoyed.

« "You can't do anything to solve this puzzle." Or, in other words: to solve this puzzle, you can't do anything. "Nothing" was the "thing" we had to do to solve this riddle. An interesting puzzle, Luke. » Layton explained.

« So, even from inside his room, he could hear us if we did something. » Emmy noted.

« Now that you wasted our brain cells in the greatest waste of time in my life, can we get in? » Max asked clearly irritated.

« As I promised. » Luke responded.

Xxxxxxx

Greeting the group was a boy, around eight years old. He had peach skin, rosy cheeks and light brown hair in a pointed style, with a fleck of hair in between his eyes. He had black eyes.

He was staring from his window, barely turning to see the four entering the room. « A clever puzzle, Luke. » Layton complimented the boy. He simply received a suspicious glare from Luke.

Layton then pulled out the letter he had received. « Your letter. I thought you might want it back. »

Luke gasped in surprise.

« Wait what? » Sam raised an eyebrow.

« You kidding me?! The brat wrote that poem!? » Max exclaimed.

« Clark was…never a fan ot typed correspondence. He always wrote his letters out in longhand. Moreover, only someone very close to Clark would know about our past together. This someone would know I could never ignore a friend in need. » Layton explained.

« Are you really… professor Layton? » Luke asked doubtful.

« Is this true Luke!? » an angry voice came from outside the room, with Luke face turning into one of anger as Clark entered the room. « How could you do something like this!? What were you thinking!? Were you thinking at all!? »

« Yeah what the hell kid! You can't just summon people busy with their jobs just because you think there's a monster under your bed! » Max exclaimed angrily.

« What the-did you just IGNORE the whole thing I said about Misthallery being attacked by the bloody spectre !? » Clark exclaimed desperate.

« Sorry pal, our brain cells are still too busy recovering from your kid little puzzle. » Sam said.

Clark sighed. « Forgive me. The boy has barely spoken to me in the last six months. He's been so withdrawn since the appearance of the spectre… »

« Very soon…the world will end. » Luke then said, looking at the window. Everybody widened their eyes at the comment of the boy, while Clark frowned.

« The end of the world… What do you mean by that? » Layton asked.

« I mean what I just said. » was Luke answer.

« Luke, you can't say something like that and not elaborate. » Emmy said as she partially bent over to look the kid in the eyes.

« Especially after you tortured us with that stupid door puzzle! » Max complained.

« He just won't open up to anyone. He wasn't always like this. When he does speak, it's only to say something inscrutable, as you saw. Prophecies…. Absurd. » Clark said after glaring at Max.

« Prophecies? » Layton asked.

« It's all my fault… » was all Clark said.

« What are you talking about, Clark? » Layton asked concerned.

« I-I'm sorry. I have urgent business I must attend to in my study. We can discuss this later. » Clark excused himself, not before slightly tugging Layton coat while exiting. He used to do this when Layton and Clark were in the same school. It meant I need to talk to you.

Then Clark turned to Luke. « Luke, Mr. Layton is a close friend. Please talk with him. Perhaps you can even help him. » he then said, before leaving. « Thank you Hershel. »

As Clark exited the room, Doland entered. « I'm afraid that it is time for Master Luke to retire. »

« Oh come on pal it's 4 FREAKING P.M.! He can stay up for a few minutes! » Max exclaimed.

« No wonder kids turn out to be hyperactive. » Sam commented.

« And we're still in the middle of something! » Emmy exclaimed.

« Nevertheless, it is bedtime. » Doland replied.

« If I may Doland. I'd like to ask Luke two more things. » Layton excused himself, before turning to Luke. « First of all, Luke…I really doubt that you were the one who called the "commissioner" Sam and Max seems to talk so much about. »

« I've never heard nor called anyone called "commissioner". I don't even know who these two are. » Luke responded.

« Try play some Telltale games pal. Or maybe just watch our animated series! » Sam then said.

« Well then, the reason why we're here in this god forgotten village in Britain is still a mystery. When I get the bastard that called the commissioner I'm going to hang him with scorpion stings! » Max exclaimed angry.

« Second, » Layton said, ignoring Max, « through the town has been repeatedly attacked by the spectre, no one has been injured. It seems that an oracle alerts the townspeople about which areas to evacuate from. Luke, I believe that you are this oracle. Am I correct? »

Luke raised his eyebrows in shock.

« What!? » Emmy exclaimed.

« How old are you, brat!? » Max exclaimed.

« Absurd! » Doland exclaimed.

« Luke, I must ask you a very important question: Do you know where the spectre will appear next? » Layton asked.

« Master Luke will not stand for such balderdash. Please leave at once! » Doland exclaimed.

« Oh no, mister sausage nose! I came here all the way from the States to find myself a giant and by god I'll solve whatever is going on here in Foggyville! » Max exclaimed angrily.

« Even if it means using a young child who has no concept of what is going on. » Sam said in support of Max.

«…Tonight. The spectre will appear tonight. » Luke then said, gaining everyone attention.

« About time you turned out to be useful, kid! » Max then said.

« If you want, I can also show where it will appear next. » Luke then said.

« Please do! » Max returned to his grinning self.

« Master Luke! This joke is in poor taste! » Doland exclaimed.

« Please don't tell my father about this, Doland. » Luke said, his voice almost breaking but his face emotionless.

Doland harsh face softened. « Master Luke…I…Are you certain this is ok? »

« Yes. Doland, did you tell the townspeople? Did you tell them about the spectre just as before? » Luke then asked.

Doland remained in silent for a while, before responding with a smile. « I did. I will make a final tour of the area to ensure that everyone has gone. »

« So where will this terrorist spectre arrive to terrorize this small town with several means of violence and destruction? » Sam asked.

« Great Ely Street… » was Luke response.

« Then we must go now. Even if we can't stop the spectre, we must confirm Luke's prediction. » Layton said.

« I don't think this spectre will terrorize Foggyville much longer. » Max said serious as he pulled out his Luger.

« I don't think that's going to be enough. » Luke then said, before turning to Layton. « My dad seems to want to see you, Mr. Layton. Please don't tell him that I'm going out. »

« You have my word. But may I ask you, where is your father study? » Layton asked.

« It's in front of my room. It's that big door on the right. » Luke then said.

Xxxxxxx

Layton entered Clark office, noticing his concerned face. « I'm sorry, Layton. I'm afraid the timing for our reunion is less than ideal… I'm sure you understand. I must deal with this spectre… and Luke has been so distant lately. »

« Of course. No mayor, or father, is without his share of concerns. » Layton replied. « I will start investigating the spectre. You try to get some rest. »

« At the very least you're bloody concerned about it. Unlike the yanks. » Clark said with a slight hiss to the last part.

« I assume you found some information's about them. Or who could had summoned them here. » Layton asked serious. Clark frowned.

« I've no idea what they are doing here, but God I'm terrified of what they can do in America. » Clark replied before pulling out some documents. « Sam and Max, Freelance Police, been active since 1987. But calling them with anything with the term "police" would be an insult to all bodies of justice in the world. Several examples of power abuse, lack of care toward the safety of civilians or infrastructure, a shoot first ask questions later mentality, a list of precedents so long I risk to drown you in paper with, whoever wanted them here clearly has the destruction of Misthallery in mind. »

Layton frowned at the situation. « These actions seem to march their behaviour so far. They threatened several of the citizens of your town unfortunately. »

« Please, for the love of God Layton. I'm more than glad that you are here to help me in these difficult times, but if the situation with those…psychopaths become too dangerous, call me immediately. I will use the police if necessary. Here they can't apply the power they hold in the States, or if not laws or not I won't allow it and that's final. Misthallery has enough problems as it is, and I won't allow them to become part of their little games. » Clark said, almost pleading.

Layton gave Clark a reassuring tone. « Don't worry my friend. I will solve this case and make sure these two individuals won't harm your town in any shape or form. » Layton promised.

« Thank you, Layton. You're a friend. » was Clark response. « If you are in need of anything, don't hesitate to ask. »

Layton then exited the room, looking as Emmy helped Beth with a problem. « I think you are meant to clean window B, but Doland simply wrote 13 in accident. » Emmy said.

« Ohhh, so that's what he meant! Thank you. Maybe now he'll be a little nicer to me. » Beth thanked Emmy.

« Honestly speaking I wouldn't understand that thing myself. Is this handwriting issue common in this house? » Sam frowned.

« Just between us, this isn't the first time Doland handwriting bas been hard to read. He used to have a beautiful penmanship, of course. Like a poet. But now that Mr. Triton is mayor, Doland has more responsibilities. Still, can't read what I can't read. » Beth responded. « I wish he would just do things the way he used to do them. »

« I think that butler is in need of a good retirement. » Sam then said.

« And if he's too young, I'm sure I can help a bit in the process. » Max grinned.

Layton, watching from the stairs, became worried. « What have I got myself into… »

Xxxxxxx

« Where are we headed Luke? » Emmy asked as our now five heroes exit the Triton residence.

« The Spectre will appear tonight on Great Ely Street in the North Ely district. » Luke explained.

« Jiminy Crickets on a roller skate! It's where that kid said that there was a massive evacuation order in place! » Sam exclaimed.

« Wait who? You do realize that I have the memory span of a dead trout. » Max said.

« Sadly, I'm aware little pal. » Sam said disappointed.

« It seems that Doland has given them my warning. » Luke sighed in relief.

« Would have been a real shame if they turned into modern art on the city streets. » Max grinned.

« Luke, what's the fastest way to North Ely? » Layton asked.

« There is an intersection past the boat landing. From there, we need to go north. » Luke explained. « From there, I'll show you the way. »

« That's the area the police blocked off, if I'm not mistaken. » Emmy noted.

« Yes. I believe the police has been helping with the evacuation. » Luke replied.

« We saw a house earlier that has been destroyed by the spectre. Do you know anything about that? » Emmy asked.

« Brock's house, you mean? Yes, it was attacked. No one was hurt, but his house was destroyed. » Luke explained.

« So, that was the spectre's handiwork? » Emmy asked. « I certainly hope we can help the people of Misthallery, Professor. »

« I'm sure we'll find something useful in North Ely. But first, I'd like to see all of the damaged buildings. Has the spectre attacked many areas around town, Luke? » Layton asked.

« I'm afraid so, Mr. Layton. » Luke said, a bit of sadness coming out of his voice.

« Cheer up little buddy. Like a forest fire, the destruction caused by the spectre has allowed for the new to rise and replace the old and dying. » Sam tried to comfort the boy.

«…THAT's your encouraging talk? » Luke said dumbfounded.

« I'm just stating facts pal. » Sam frowned.

« Let's go back to Brock's house. I would like to be certain that we didn't miss anything the first time. » Layton said. And with that, the group begun its march.

Xxxxxxx

As they walked, they found themselves in front of Bucky Boat Emporium, with Bucky coming out to greet them. « Hey! There's Luke, my boy! Glad to see you getting some fresh air, kid! »

« Oh, hello Bucky. » Luke said politely but with no emotions.

« Growing boys like you need to get outside and play! » Bucky exclaimed once again.

« Well at the very least he doesn't seem to be a Call of Duty fan. » Sam frowned.

« What's a "Call of Duty"? » Luke asked.

« It's best not to know for a kid of your age. » Max said.

Bucky then pulled out a train toy and a track out of his pockets. « You trust ol' Bucky! You'll have a lot of fun playing outside with this! »

The boy simply smiled. « Thank you very much, Bucky. »

« That's great kid! Now you can tie up cockroaches to the tracks like those cheesy Wild West movies in the 60's! » Max exclaimed.

« I think I'll pass… » was Luke response.

« Your loss kid. » Max said.

« Look at these rugged overalls! They're perfect for boating! » Bucky said.

« What if we were to engage in your boating industry at this current moment of the day my enthusiastic friend? » Sam asked.

« Right now? Well…. we're ACTUALLY dealing with…uh…maintenance issues… But we'll be back up and floating soon! » Bucky justified himself.

« Funny way to say that your boats are a floating danger hazard! » Max exclaimed.

« Be sure to stop by when…well…they aren't! » Bucky said.

Xxxxxxx

After more walking, the group finally reached Brock destroyed house, with him laughing his sorrow away. « The spectre crushed my house! Now I've got a flat flat! Beat that! »

« Wait! Your flat is actually flat!? It's just what I needed in my life! » Max exclaimed excited.

« Where has this magnificent piece of architecture been all these years! Have you any idea how rare flat flats are these days? » Sam said to the rest of the group.

« Mocking aside- » Emmy begun before being interrupted.

« Who said anything about mocking? » Max asked.

« Anyway, we're sorry for your home. It was lucky you weren't hurt. » she continued.

« It wasn't luck! The oracle said the spectre was coming! That oracle should become a meteorologist! » Brock exclaimed.

« Well they would certainly be better than whatever poor excuse they have on our channel in the States. » Sam said.

« The police evacuated us out of here, sure! But what now? I think I let my spectre insurance lapse! » Brock laughed.

« Honestly I think it's for the best. These ghost insurance companies cause more harm than good these days. » Sam commented.

« Yeah! Last time when we were dealing with ghost related issues, they even had the guts to tell us to get out the building or they would call the police! » Max exclaimed irritated.

« Wasn't that the time we came for our car insurance and you decided to grab a submachine gun and fire at random positions of the building claiming that there were ghosts of little Japanese children obsessed with tongues and scissors? » Sam asked.

« Yeah that was probably on me for consuming that radioactive Minamata made sushi roll with chili pepper. » Max admitted.

« Feel free to laugh with me anytime here folks! » Brock begun to laugh again.

« Laughing at a time like this can make some of us fell rather sad. » Emmy commented.

« Just have your head bashed 14 hours a day with a bat and you'll be able to remove your conscience! Just like me! » Max exclaimed with a grin.

Suddenly Emmy begun to feel bad for the rabbit. « Oh…. sorry…I didn't know- »

« Oh no I meant that I don't have a conscience. I was like this since I was born. » Max grinned.

« Of course you bloody were. » Emmy gritted her teeth annoyed.

« None the less, I think it would be for the better if we leave him. He needs time to deal with this. » Layton intervened to avoid a fight, before turning to Luke. « Luke, what other places were hit by the spectre? »

« There is a house east of the crossroads that is still being repaired. » Luke explained.

« Let's go crack some skulls! Figurately, but yeah we could really use some bashing around here. » Max said.

« Please don't bash any heads mister. » Luke pleaded the rabbit.

Xxxxxxx

The group reached the canals, and true to Luke words, some house had been damaged. « Some houses along the canal were damaged by the spectre. Most of them had been repaired by now. » Luke said as the five walked along the water body.

«Hmm. Was there any connection between the damaged houses? » Layton pondered.

« It's a giant spectre rampaging in the middle of the city, they probably built the town in some sacred ground or some crap like that. » Max said bored out of his mind.

« Max! » Emmy exclaimed as she covered Luke ears.

« What? It's a feasible theory. » Sam justified his rabbit friend.

« I know but…no curses! Not in front of the kid anyway! » she complained.

« Oh come on, he was going to use that world in five or so years! » Max complained.

« What word? » Luke asked innocently.

« No word. You're still too young for some words, kid. » Emmy said.

« None the less, I believe that we're going to need to gather a bit more information here. » Layton said, before turning to Luke once again. « Luke, where else can we see the evidence of the attacks? »

« I'm sorry, but I think this is the only place that would have any damage remaining. » Luke said disappointed.

« You know after witnessing the capabilities of this spectre to Brock house, I have to admit that the damage done to the rest of the buildings is quite disappointing. » Sam noted.

« This means that this spectre is probably conspiring against poor Brock! » Max deduced.

« Oh no, these houses were damaged as badly as Brock house. They simply didn't have the time to fix his as for now. » Luke explained.

« Tell them to not fix the house! It will lose its natural charm! » Max exclaimed worried.

« We've been searching for that kind of house for years and by all fleas on a rampaging mutant dog of Sicily we aren't going to let a few renovations works get in the way! »

Luke widened his eyes in disbelief and turned to Emmy and Layton. « I know kid. I myself believed that they were just trying to mock him. » Emmy said exasperated.

As the group prepared to move, Luke tugged Emmy sleeve. « Uh…Emmy was it? »

« Yes Luke? » she asked.

« What does "crap" mean? » he asked innocently.

Emmy smiled at the question but her eyes darkened, as she bent down to meet Luke in the eyes. « Say Luke, how would you like rabbit stew for dinner? »

« You try that and you'll regret it! Seriously, the number of parasites and bacteria in my body is so high I should be considered a biological hazard. » Max said.

« You continue to baffle me little buddy. » Sam then said.

Xxxxxxx

East District interactions:

During their walk, the five met a man who wore a blue sweater over a white shirt, with the sleeves rolled up. He also wore a dark blue cap and matching coloured pants with black rimmed glasses. « Hello, Thomas. » Luke greeted the man.

« Why, its little Luke Triton. Where is your father today? » the man, Thomas, asked.

« My father is at home… » Luke responded, clearly not in the mood to talk about his dad.

« I see. I wanted to ask you what could I have done to make your mother so angry with me. She always came by to talk over her travel plans. But this time, she left without even a word. She must have had some reasons that she didn't want to talk with me. And go off alone? She always loved family vacations. Unless her and your father were fighting… » Thomas asked.

« Oh that explains a lot! They're going through a divorce! » Max exclaimed.

« W-what? » Luke asked in disbelief and with small tears forming in his eyes.

« Oh, sorry, Luke. I, uh… Don't listen to me OR that mean bunny. I was just babbling, and that rabbit was just being mean. Your parents get along better than anyone! Just let me know when your mum gets back in town.

« Y'know, this is the first time I've been called the "mean rabbit." Most of the times people call me a plague infected lagomorph…» Max commented.

« She's been gone quite a while. I don't know when she'll be back. » Luke ignored Max.

« Sometimes adults have to do their own things for a bit. She'll be home soon to spoil you rotten! » Thomas said to comfort the boy.

« This is positively wholesome! Just what I hate. » Max commented.

Xxxxxxx

As the group walked, Emmy noticed something odd from one of the many pipes in the area. « That's odd. »

« What's odd? » Luke asked.

« I'm sure I just saw a mouse pop up out of that pipe. » Emmy explained.

« Really? You've never seen a rat in your entire life? » Max asked annoyed.

« Of course I have, but that mouse was weird! It seemed so large and…had horns? » Emmy complained.

As a clue, said horned rat emerged from the tube. « You saw-witnessed nothing, human-things, yes-yes! » he said before he pulled out a green tube made of some sort of crystal. « WARPSTONE NEURALYZER! » as he said that, a flash of green light hit our protagonists, and the rat disappeared in the tube itself.

« What were we doing here again? » Max asked confused.

« No idea. » Emmy responded, having clearly no memory of what just happened.

Xxxxxxx

As the group walked along the bendy roads of rural Misthallery, the found themselves in front of a man, dresses up in a shirt, jacket, and pants, all in green and also wearing glasses. « Hey there. Tourists, eh? » he asked.

« Yes, well, something like that. » Layton responded.

« Heard that the criminal head bashing competition was localized in this area! » Max exclaimed.

« My name is Mido. Call me Mido. I won't go into details, but you should leave at once. Misthallery is dangerous right now. Sightseeing is not a good idea. » Mido said.

« Oh come on, we haven't brought that much death and destruction! » Max complained.

« No, you bubblehead! He's referring to the spectre! By the way, we're Sam and Max, freelance police! And these are professor Layton and his assistant Emmy Altava. » Sam told Mido.

« How do you know of the spectre!? The legend of the spectre is not supposed to leave our borders! » Mido exclaimed.

« It was the commissioner and the mayor who sent us to solve this series of terrorist acts by this separatist extremist spectre. » Sam explained.

« The mayor? Really? Perhaps he's more competent than I thought. But how good are your deducting skills? » Mido asked.

« We managed to solve this eight-year-old door puzzle and his letter cryptic message! » Sam exclaimed.

« We're doomed. » Mido said defeated.

« Just wait until I tell the folks around here about the nukes. » Max said with a mischievous grin.

« Can you tell us anything about the spectre? » Layton asked.

« Hmm…no. But I do wonder why the spectre chose to show up now. We've had a problem with these sinkholes appearing lately. Seen some unnaturally thick fog too. So many problems in our little town these days. » Mido admitted.

« So you're saying that fog isn't that natural around these parts? » Max said with a bit of hope.

« Oh no, fog is quite common around these parts. Just…not as thick. » Mido explained.

« For all I care this village is freaking hopeless. » Max complained.

« Awww. Little rabbit can't stand the big bad fog? » Emmy mocked Max.

« Why you yellow miserable- » Max said in rage.

« Oh no! You made him angry! » Sam said worried.

« Sure looks that way. » Emmy said as she prevented Max to grab her by holding his forehead, with Max waving his hands violently and Luke giggling at the scene.

Xxxxxxx

After a while, the group reached a large plaza, with what seemed to be a fountain in the middle. « This is North Ely. » Luke stated.

« You're a great tour guide, Luke. » Emmy smiled, ruffling his hat and messing his hair. « You're as good at this as you are at delivering hidden messages. »

« Hidden messages? » Luke asked.

« Yes, like the one on the letter where you wrote "Help SOS". » Emmy responded.

« What was that about little buddy? Were you captured by the Viet Kong and had to make secret requests of help? » Sam asked.

« I believe that test was intended for me. » Layton stated.

« You know for being such a legendary figure in England that there is a noun describing something very mysterious with your name, no one seems to believe you as a competent puzzle solver. » Sam commented.

« He meant no offense sadly. » Max then said.

« Luke here was hoping to find someone he could trust. » Layton then said, while Luke remained silent. « Because sometimes it's difficult to share secrets with those closest to you. And it's always easier to speak with someone who understands you. Would that be fair to say, Luke? »

In response, Luke just widened his eyes in shock.

« So you literally wrote to the professor just so that you could have someone to talk to? » Sam asked with a frown.

« No, he also wrote for the spectre, most likely. » Layton responded.

« Luke? Is there something you'd like to tell us? You can trust us. » Emmy bent down to Luke level to reassure the boy.

« I can't…Not now. » Luke responded.

« Would you if we were to play "Good Cop, Psychotic Cop?" » Max said with a sociopathic grin and a baseball bat.

« That's fine, Luke. We can wait until the time is right. For now, our hands are full with the spectre. » Layton intervened, taking the bat out of Max hands. « We need to find a place where we can safely observe the spectre. »

« The second floor of the hotel on Great Ely looks down onto the street. » Luke responded, hiding behind Emmy because of Max intimidation.

« Dang it! We should had brought our luggage! » Sam cursed.

Xxxxxxx

North Ely Park Interactions:

As the group was heading towards the Great Ely hotel, they were blocked by a police officer. « The evacuation order has been given. Move along now. Nothing to see here. »

« Well good to know that you finally managed to overcome your chronic sleeping issues and food addictions to actually do your job! » Max mocked the man.

« What the hell are you talking about!? Misthallery officers have the same uniforms, helmets, and haircuts! Many of us are related, as well. it's all by order of Chief Jakes. But this isn't the time to discuss official regulations! I can't let you pass this way. you'll have to get permission from either the chief or the mayor. »

« They have permission. » Luke stated.

« Ah. Mayor Triton's son is accompanying you. Well, that's a different matter, then. You may pass. Tell your father I said hello, will you, son? » Chippe replied.

« He also said that we're allowed to maim and kill any individual we so desire for entertainment! » Max grinned.

« Actually, my father stated that you must intervene immediately if these two start attacking innocent people. » Luke smirked evilly, pointing at Sam and Max.

« Quite indeed! And he was very particular with his words. » Emmy added.

« What can I say. Mayor's orders, so we better keep an eye on you two. » the officer replied with a smirk as well.

« You just signed your death sentence, kid. » Max glared the kid.

Xxxxxxx

As the group advanced towards the Great Ely hotel, they met a familiar face. « Ah, yes, fate is kind to bring us together once more! I hope you are well, my friends. » it was Aldus, the man from the entrance of Misthallery.

« Oh jeez it's the fatass. » Sam commented.

« I am here to give you an insightful suggestion. Inspect that tube over there. » Aldus said.

« What seems to be so interesting that you came all the way here to warn us? » Sam asked as he inspected the pipe, finding a small fossil inside. « Well that was surprising. »

« I was kinda hoping it was some sort of hand eating mutant. » Max said.

« You crack me up little buddy. » Sam responded.

« Start a collection with that! Now, you just may discover an entire new passion! There are treasures hidden in odd places around town. Add these objects to your collection! Soon your collection will be grand enough to inspire many across the land! » Aldus exclaimed.

« You know the idea of fame by collecting several odd and rare items hidden in this small British town has always been a small passion of mine. » Sam said, before he noticed that Aldus was gone.

« Guys…I'm getting confused. » Luke said.

« You're not the only one little buddy. » Sam responded.

Bridge to down interactions:

In their search for more items, Sam and Max left Layton, Emmy and Luke to their own devices, and reached the entrance of the town, where they admired the professor's car.

« And they said the Peele p50 was the smallest car in the world…» Sam commented.

« Can't wait to see Jeremy Clarkson fit in this deathtrap whilst escaping from the Argentinian military…» Max grinned.

« You crack me up, little buddy! » Sam replied.

« It's a sticky spoon! » Sam exclaimed, as he picked up a spoon that was sticky.

« Like the one in…. uh….hey we can shove it….yeah, I got nothing…» Max shrugged.

As the two headed out to get back to their three companions, they met Chippe once more. « My orders say no outsiders in Misthallery! I made an exception for you, however. Just don't let the chief know, or it's curtains for me! »

« Your secret is safe with us, but why does this quiet locale in the middle of the jungles of England seeks to be more isolationist than the Inazuman Democratic Republic? » Sam asked,

« I just get so sleepy when I'm on the job, you know? Perhaps I'm working too hard…zzz… » Chippe fell asleep.

« England's finest, ladies and gentlemen. » Max joked.

Hat Shop Interactions:

As our heroes walked toward the hotel, they found themselves in front of a gargantuan man, who wore a purple jacket and hat with a light blue buttoned shirt and yellow pants.

« Dude? You know that there's an evacuation order right now, right? » Sam asked.

« Oh I'm going, I'm going. Just let me get my things together. If I forget anything, my wife and son are going to be awfully mad! » the man responded.

« You have less than a minute to pack your stuff before I turn you into target practice. » Max threatened the man.

Xxxxxxx

Finally, our heroes reached the hotel. « Here's the hotel. » Luke stated.

« As purely depressing as every single building in this town. » Sam commented.

« If the district has been evacuated, everyone should be gone, right? » Layton assumed.

« Only one way to find out. » Emmy responded, as she entered the building.

True to Layton words, no one seemed to be inside. « I don't see anyone here. » Layton noted.

« There's a bell on the counter. Let's see if anyone answers it. » Emmy ringed a small bell on the counter. Responding to the call was a man who wore a green hat and matching pants, a brown jacket, and a pale-yellow shirt.

« Well finally! Some guests! Can I get you folks a room? » the man asked.

« You do realize that there is a massive evacuation order caused by several terrorist attacks by a giant anarchist spectre? » Sam asked.

« I can assure sir, my friend is mentally stable! Unlike me! » Max then said.

« Evacuation order? I thought we had more cancellations than usual. As the owner of this establishment, I have no intention to leave! » the man exclaimed.

« No seriously, you have to leave this area unless you want to become part of the streets decoration! » Sam warned the man.

« Well, let the blasted spectre come. He can put down a deposit just like everyone else. » the man responded. « Besides, where is there to run to? The spectre won't be leaving Misthallery anytime soon. »

« You are not going to leave this damn hotel, aren't you? » Sam asked defeated.

« Why is everyone so stupid around here? » Max asked annoyed.

« Did you ring the bell to get a room or to badger an old man into abandoning his business? » the man asked annoyed. « I suggest you refrain from telling me to go elsewhere unless you'd like me to tell you the same. »

« You bring an excellent point, good sir. » Sam noted.

« Tell you what—take room 302. Best city view in the district. Right up the stairs. » the man told the gang.

« Well with an offer like that, I'm sold. » Sam proclaimed.

Xxxxxxx

« Room 302, here we are. » Layton said as he entered the room.

« You know I had low expectations for this room, but I have to say that it did not disappoint. In a good way that is. » Sam noted.

« This is great! We can see the entire block from here! We'll have a front-row seat for the spectre! » Emmy said excited.

« And we can even have some target practice in the meantime! » Max said excited as he went to the window.

« Target practice-OH GOD NO! » Emmy exclaimed as she ran towards Max, who was holding a sniper rifle while inspecting the road.

This was going to be a long mystery.
