The fog rolled in thick and heavy, wrapping the city in an eerie silence that seemed to swallow all sound. Somewhere in the distance, a police officer's voice crackled over the radio.

"PC-58, please report your status."

"West 6th Avenue, all clear," came the reply. "It's very foggy. I'd like to return soon—wait…" There was a pause.

A blur of white streaked past—something shimmering, unreal. The officer stammered. "Are you there?!"

The line went dead.

The next morning, "Niwa! Good morning!" Kuri Hikawa's cheerful voice startled Daisuke out of his spiral of thoughts.

He froze, nearly tripping over his own feet. "Good mor—" he stumbled, catching himself awkwardly.

Kuri flashed him a radiant smile. "Thanks so much for last night!"

Daisuke blinked in confusion. "Thanks for what?"

"For running off! Because of you, I was able to clear Dark's name," Kuri said brightly, as if that made perfect sense.

Daisuke's heart raced. "No problem, I guess…" he muttered, though he wasn't entirely sure what she meant.

Kuri leaned in, her eyes sparkling with determination. "Please keep helping me, Niwa! I could really use your support."

The close proximity, her pleading tone—it was all too much. "I… uh…" Daisuke stammered, feeling the telltale signs of Dark stirring inside him. "Sorry! I'm in a hurry!"

He bolted, leaving a puzzled Kuri behind.

Later that day, Daisuke couldn't shake the feeling that Kuri's enthusiasm for Dark was something deeper. And her cryptic remarks… Why did she care so much about clearing his name? And why did she keep looking at him like she knew something?

But as soon as the thought entered his mind, Reiko found him.

"Niwa," she began, arms crossed. "You were with Kuri last night, weren't you?"

Daisuke froze. "Uh… yeah?"

"Then why didn't you stop her from agreeing to go on a date with Dark?" Reiko demanded, her voice sharp. "She came home practically glowing about it!"

Daisuke's heart sank. "No way… Kuri's going on a date with Dark?"

The thought of it made his chest tighten. Was it jealousy? No… Kuri was just trying to catch him. Right?

Before he could sort out his feelings, Reiko caught him in a headlock. "Hey! Are you even listening to me?!"

"Sorry! Can't… breathe!" Daisuke gasped.

She released him with a huff. "Ugh, you're hopeless. Let me ask you something strange: You're not Dark, are you?"

"What?!" Daisuke exclaimed, his voice cracking.

Reiko narrowed her eyes. "You didn't even deny it!"

"I'm sorry! I've got to go!" Daisuke yelped, fleeing before she could interrogate him further.

Kuri waited for Daisuke after school, her expression unusually calm. "Walk me home?" she asked, falling into step beside him before he could protest.

As they strolled in awkward silence, she suddenly broke it. "Have you ever heard of the Kaitoh Dark?"

Daisuke nearly tripped. "Uh, Kaitoh Dark?" he feigned ignorance.

Kuri nodded. "He's a thief who flies with black wings and steals cursed artwork. He's dangerous but… I think he might be able to help me."

"Help you?" Daisuke asked, genuinely curious.

Kuri hesitated. "There's someone very dear to me who I want to save. My brother. He was separated from us when we were adopted. He's in danger… from things you wouldn't believe."

Daisuke's throat tightened. "And you think Dark can save him?"

"I know he can," Kuri said with quiet conviction. "He has a power that no one else does. If I can offer him something in return—his freedom, a chance to be unbound from the Kokuyoku—I think he'll listen."

Her words struck something deep inside Daisuke. He felt Dark stir, the thief's voice echoing faintly in his mind. "She knows too much… but why do I feel like I can't refuse her?"

Kuri leaned against her balcony, gazing into the fog-shrouded night. The unicorn had taken Reiko—she knew it would come for her next.

"That's it… come and get me."

As if summoned, the creature emerged from the mist, its body shimmering with otherworldly light. It charged, snatching Kuri with ease and whisking her into the night.

Meanwhile, Daisuke was already on his way to the Central Church, desperate to stop the unicorn and save Kuri. He swam through the sewer system, his determination burning like fire.

"For Miss Hikawa," he whispered, "I'll do whatever it takes."

Bursting through the well, he saw the unicorn carrying Kuri toward a glowing painting. "Kuri!" he shouted.

She stirred, her voice faint. "Daisuke? Follow me…"

As she disappeared into the painting, Daisuke felt his resolve crack. He couldn't do it alone. The transformation came before he could stop it.

"Come on," Dark said as he took over. "No need to cry. Let's do this the fun way."

Dark landed gracefully inside the painting, his violet eyes scanning the surreal landscape. The unicorn charged, its horn glowing with dangerous energy.

"Kuri!" he shouted, spotting her surrounded by spectral figures. She turned to him, her eyes dull and distant.

"Leave us," a childlike voice commanded.

Dark narrowed his eyes, realizing it wasn't Kuri speaking—it was Misaki, the spirit tied to the painting.

"You're controlling her!" Dark growled. "Let her go!"

The unicorn attacked, its magic lashing out in a beam of light. Dark dodged, but the impact left him staggering.

Kuri's voice broke through the haze. "Dark! Please… stop it…"

His heart jolted. For the first time, her words weren't laced with bitterness or distrust. She was pleading with him.

"Don't worry," Dark said softly, his smirk fading. "I'll protect you."

Summoning his feather, he disrupted the painting's magic. Misaki's voice wailed as the world began to collapse.

Dark scooped Kuri into his arms as the painting dissolved. Her head rested against his chest, her breathing shallow but steady.

"You're safe now," he murmured, his voice softer than he intended.

Kuri's eyes fluttered open. "Dark… why?"

He paused, his expression unreadable. "Because… you're important."

Before she could respond, Dark flew her out of the painting, his wings cutting through the fog. Below, Reiko and the other captives stirred awake.

"Dark!" Reiko shouted, glaring up at them. "Put my sister down, you pervert!"

Dark smirked. "Sorry, but she's mine tonight."

Kuri blushed furiously. "Dark!"

"Relax," he teased, his voice carrying a rare gentleness. "Let's just call it a date."

And for the first time, Kuri didn't protest.
