Ashe
Today was my first day of grade 2. I was nervous, knowing that I would be the youngest one in my class. At just five years old, the idea of being among older kids was daunting, but I took comfort in the fact that I would soon turn six. Jaxon was with me, and his presence made all the difference. Without him, I'm not sure I could have gotten through the day.
Mommy made sure I had everything, and she even agreed to keep Janna at home today, which meant Jaxon could focus solely on me. His comforting words and gentle hand in mine gave me the courage to walk into the classroom with my head held high.
" You got this Ashe, and remember I am just right over there," Jaxon said, and I smiled as I took a seat next to a girl with very short hair. Her eyes met mine, and she offered a shy smile.
"Hi, I am Lacey," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. The initial shyness in her eyes softened as she extended her hand towards me.
"I'm Ashe," I replied, shaking her hand with a small, but genuine smile.
"You look really little, I don't mean to be mean or anything," Lacey commented, her eyes widening slightly as she realized how her words might have sounded.
"I know," I replied with a small laugh, trying to put her at ease. "I'm actually the youngest in our class. I'm only five, but I'll be six soon."
"Really, you are only 5? Wow, um, why are you in grade 2?" Lacey asked, her curiosity piqued.
"I, um, skipped preschool and grade 1, I think. My kindergarten teacher said I was really smart," I explained, fidgeting slightly.
Lacey looked impressed. "That's amazing! Do you like reading and stuff?"
"Yeah, I love it," I replied, feeling a bit more confident.
"That is awesome, I am glad you are here, Ashe," she said, her face lighting up with a warm smile.
Our teacher began the class, and I felt like I just made a new friend—or at least I hoped I did. I knew I would see Taliyah at lunch, but maybe Lacey would be my friend too. As the lesson started, I glanced over at Lacey and saw her looking back at me with a smile. It was a comforting feeling, knowing that I wasn't alone in this new environment. The day seemed to pass more quickly with that thought in mind, and I found myself eagerly anticipating lunchtime, curious to see how my interactions with Taliyah and Lacey would unfold.
The bell rang and it was finally lunchtime. I was excited as I ran outside, eager to find Taliyah and Lacey. In my haste, I accidentally ran into a boy older than me.
"Watch it, pipsqueak," he said, glaring down at me. I stumbled back, startled by his harsh tone. My heart pounded in my chest as I tried to mumble an apology, but the words got stuck in my throat. The boy scoffed and walked away, leaving me standing there, feeling a bit shaken.
Just then, I heard a familiar voice calling my name. It was Taliyah, waving enthusiastically from a nearby table. I felt a wave of relief wash over me as I made my way towards her. "Hey Ashe, over here!" she called out, her smile bright and welcoming.
As I reached the table, I saw Lacey sitting beside Taliyah, her face lighting up when she saw me. "Hey Ashe, come sit with us!" she said warmly, patting the empty spot next to her.
I sat down between my new friend and my old one, feeling a sense of belonging that I hadn't felt before. Lacey and Taliyah started chatting about their favorite books, and I joined in, sharing my own favorites. The tension from my earlier encounter with the older boy faded away as I laughed and talked with my friends.
As lunchtime came to an end, we gathered our things and began walking back to class. I was chatting with Taliyah and Lacey, feeling more at ease in their company. However, as we turned a corner, I unexpectedly bumped into the same boy from earlier.
"Didn't I tell you to watch it, pipsqueak?" he sneered, shoving me backward with more force this time. My heart raced, and I stumbled, struggling to keep my balance.
"Hey, back off!" Lacey interjected, stepping forward with a fierce look on her face. Taliyah stood by her side, arms crossed, glaring at the boy.
The boy's eyes darted between the three of us, and for a moment, I thought he might back down. Instead, he scowled even harder. "Stay out of this, or you'll regret it," he spat, before turning on his heel and storming off.
He didn't back off; in fact, I felt like he was going to bully me even more. My heart sank as I saw the determination in his eyes.
Then, out of nowhere, Jaxon appeared around the corner and stood behind me, his presence immediately commanding attention. "Problem?" he asked, his voice calm but firm, giving the older boy a steady, unwavering look.
"Oh, um, no sir," the boy stammered as he backed off quickly, his bravado crumbling in an instant.
I couldn't help but let out a relieved laugh, turning to Jaxon and giving him a high five. "My security blanket!" I thought with a grin. Jaxon had a way of diffusing tense situations with his mere presence.
With the older boy gone, the three of us continued our walk back to class, my heart feeling lighter than it had all day. Jaxon fell into step beside me, flashing a reassuring smile. "You okay, Ashe?" he asked softly.
"Yeah, thanks to you," I replied, gratitude evident in my voice.
Jaxon glanced at me with sincerity in his eyes. "I am here for you always, Ashe. Whether it be threats or bullies, I will have your back," he said earnestly, his words wrapping around me like a protective shield.
I felt a warmth spread through me, a newfound sense of security. "Thank you, Jaxon. That means a lot," I murmured, my voice tinged with emotion.
As we reached the classroom door, I realized that with friends like Lacey, and Taliyah, I had a support system stronger than I ever imagined. Together, we stepped into the room, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
The school day ended, and Jaxon took my hand and walked with me home. I had a good day other than the bully. I was excited to go home and see my sisters; I missed them.
We walked in comfortable silence, the afternoon sun casting long shadows on the pavement. Jaxon and I shared a bond that went beyond mere friendship; it was one forged in the fires of shared experiences and mutual respect.
As we turned the corner onto my street, the familiar sounds of laughter and chatter reached my ears. Mommy was outside with Janna and Poppy, their laughter mingling with the warm afternoon air. Janna, ever the bundle of energy, spotted us first and came running with her arms wide open. "Ashe! Jaxon!" she squealed with delight, her excitement infectious.
I was sure if Poppy wasn't a baby, she would be excited too. She was so calm and hardly ever cried, a peaceful presence in our lively household.
Mommy's voice broke through my thoughts as she called out, "How was your day, honey?"
I smiled and hugged Janna tightly before answering. "It was good, Mommy. I had a bit of a rough time with a bully, but Jaxon was there to help me out. And now, I'm just happy to be home with you all."
Mommy looked at Jaxon with gratitude, "Thank you, Jaxon.
Jaxon nodded, his expression earnest. "It's my duty, Sophie. Ashe and your family's safety is my priority."
I felt my heart swell with affection for this dependable figure who played such an important role in our lives. Mommy reached out and ruffled my hair gently, "Well, let's get inside and enjoy the rest of the day together. We can talk more about it over dinner."
With that, we all made our way into the house, the warmth of family and the comfort of security enveloping us. I knew that no matter what challenges I faced, I would always have this incredible support system to rely on.
