Chapter 5
Jane sighed as she entered the Slytherin common room, her mind still full of the incident in potions. She couldn't believe Angela would do something like that, it was not only petty and mean, but also dangerous. But then Jane heard someone calling her name. She turned to see none other than Prefect Harrington approaching.
"What's this I've been hearing about you speaking up against Angela in Potions class?" He asked, observing her curiously.
"W-well, she, she s-s-sabotaged Max's c-c-cauldron, I-I couldn't l-l-leave that…"Jane stammered.
Steve kept her gaze on Jane for a moment before nodding. "Well, that's good. It's important we don't let any bullying slip, even from our own house, in fact, I'd say especially from our own house."
That caused a stir, several outbursts of shock from other First Year Slytherins present.
"Oh I'm sorry, you think people should get away with bullying others, do you?" Steve asked pointedly.
Jane smiled at that, glad for his support as the other First Years began to shift uncomfortably.
"That's better, now, let that be a lesson to all of you. It is not okay to bully anyone and if you see it you should report it, no matter the House of the person doing the bullying." said Steve.
"I…" Jane's eyes filled with tears, her hands shaking. "There was...there was another boy, earlier in the week who tried to attack me, but...but Ilya saved me.
Steve nodded, having heard of that incident.
Before she could say anything else Steve pointed something out.
"By the way, a letter was left for you, I think it's from Professor Snape." She remarked.
She looked to where he pointed and saw a letter left propped on a nearby table, with her name on it. She walked over to it and opened it, checking it out.
"Miss Hopper
It seems you are able to handle dealing with things that are difficult, such as speaking up even against classmates, since you are so eager to be dependable, I am sending you fetch some jars of horned slugs for next lesson from the fourth floor potions storeroom.
Be quick about it.
Professor S. Snape."
Jane gasped, startled.
"Well?" Steve asked.
"It's from Professor Snape, he...he's a-a-asking me to g-g-get horned slugs f-f-f-from the s-s-store cupboard for the n-n-n-next lesson." Jane explained.
Steve bit his lip. "Huh, okay...well, go for it, best do what he says, we don't want him getting any more irritable.
Jane nodded and then, taking a moment to compose herself, she removed her robe and stashed it in her dorm room and left in just her regular uniform, wiping her hands on her skirt in nervousness but still headed out and began to hurry to said destination.
Approaching the door Jane bit her lip.
'Odd, I never knew there was a potion storeroom here, I thought it was down in the dungeons.' Jane pondered. 'Yeah, must be a spare storeroom, for ingredients that don't fit in that one.'
She bit her lip, anxious as she stepped into the room only to find it was dark, with no light inside whatsoever.
'Hm, how are I supposed to…' Jane wondered. She then got an idea and pulled out her wand. "Lumos."
She let out a gasp when the light revealed not a potion storeroom, but a large bare room, filled with a strange plant consisting on multiple vines and tendrils which reacted at once to the light and one flashed forwards, wrapping itself around Jane's ankle. Jane yelped and leapt back, freeing her foot while letting out a startled shriek.
"W-w-what is that?" Jane gasped.
Then, from the other side of the now closed door, a familiar taunting voice.
"It's a vicious plant known as Devil's Snare, some fourth years showed it to me yesterday." She said. "Have fun."
Jane gasped in horror, trying to get out of the room. "A-Angela, w-w-what are you, c-c-c-come back here!"
But it was no use, Angela was gone and the door was locked. Jane cried out again as another tendril grabbed her ankle.
'Gotta get out of here...Devil's Snare, I read about it, um...' Jane thought, trying not to panic. 'Oh, it hates light, the brighter the better, but…'
Jane grimaced, it was all she had, but it was better than nothing.
Trying her best to move with her ankle still in it's grip, Jane turned to face the Devil's Snare and readied her wand again.
"Lumos!" She cried.
The light burst from Jane's wand and Devil's Snare flinched, releasing Jane's ankle. She took her chance turned and began pounding on the door, calling out for help. Hearing the slithering noise Jane turned her attention back to the Devil's Snare and cast Lumos again, trying to keep her wand lit as long as possible, to ward the plant off. It wasn't easy, fear was clouding her concentration, making the light flicker and disappear after a while. But then, after a short while, the Devil's Snare seemed to get more aggressive and lashed out. She cried out and raised her wand again, ready to cast once more. She was cut off by the plant quickly ensnaring her binding her arms to her sides and grabbing at her legs and holding them steady, more vines began to grab her, making her scream. Her wand was now forced to point down at the ground as she was pulled back and securely bound in the tendrils, she could hear the rips and knew her clothes were being torn by the rough tendrils and her struggles. Jane cried out, struggling as hard as she could.
"No, not gonna..." She wheezed as she struggled to breath. "Lumos!"
Her wand flickered and lit up, but it only temporarily affected the Devil's Snare before it tightened it's grip again.
"Lu-MRUGH!" Jane began only to be cut off by a tendril tightly binding itself around her mouth.
She moaned into the vine gagging her as it gripped her tightly, hurting her cheeks.
"HLLLPPP, HLLLPP!" She screamed desperately.
Jane's eyes were wide, she was hopelessly bound by this vicious plant and now gagged, helpless, she were doomed. But then she heard it, banging on the door.
"What's going on in there?"
Jane reacted at once and tried to scream through the vines gagging her.
"Hold, on, hold on!"
The door was burst open and Jane saw it was the four boys she saw on the train, Mike, Will, Dustin and Lucas.
"What on..." Will gasped. "Just, hold on, We've got you."
Rushing forwards they got to work, three of them using their wands to cast Lumos and ward off the Devil's Snare, making it loosen it's grip enough for Mike to grab her and drag her away from it and Jane soon found themselves outside the room, finally free, on her hands and knees, gasping for air, still clutching her wand in a vice like grip.
Jane looked up at the boys, biting her lip as they looked back at her, worried.
"I-I…" She began.
"Are you alright?" Will asked. "Are you, I mean…?"
She managed a small smile, touched by their concern. "I-I-I-I'm okay."
They nodded and helped her get to her feet. Her clothes had been badly torn by their struggle with the Devil's Snare, she had scratches and cuts on her knees and what little of her thighs that the skirt exposed. The skirt itself was ripped in several places along with similar tears on her sweater and blouse and her socks had several holes in them. But she was alive.
"I...thank you." Jane said, looking at the boys again.
They all smiled lightly, relieved that she seemed to be okay now as they all stowed their wands.
"Can't believe this, what is that doing in there?" Dustin wondered.
Will shook his head. "I don't know, I better talk to Professor Sprout about it."
"I-I-It had s-s-something to do with, with Angela...She t-t-tricked me in there." Jane revealed.
The boys gasped in shock at that but she reassured them and they all were glad for that. They all promised to help her and Jane replied gratefully and thus they were able to officially befriend each other right there, although he wasn't present they had all befriended Ilya too, tomorrow they'd likely all meet up to properly form their friend group.
Finally, after thanking the boys again, Jane began to make her way back to the Slytherin Common Room. Jane was relieved when she arrived that there wasn't that many people around so there wasn't anybody to stare at them in their ruined clothes. Steve was still there however and approached her.
"Finally there you are, so, how did it go, did you-" He stopped, his eyes widened upon seeing her. "What on, what happened to you, are you-?"
Jane sighed. "A-A-A-Angela happened. She s-s-s-sent that note, n-n-not Professor Snape and it w-w-w-was a trap, she l-l-l-locked me in a room w-w-w-with a Devil's Snare, if it w-w-wasn't for the boys I'd be d-d-d-dead."
Steve grimaced. "Angela, that's...there's a problem with that, she's at Detention with Professor Snape. So even if she is involved, there's no real proof and she technically has an alibi."
Jane's face fell so Steve tried to cheer her up.
"Don't worry, you're alive and safe and it sounds like you've just made some great friends." He said, making her smile. "Now in the meantime, go up to the dorms and get changed, the House Elves will be able to repair your damaged clothes by tomorrow."
Jane nodded and gratefully made her way to the dormitory, just glad it was over.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
