Chapter 29: The Serpent's Entrance
The oppressive atmosphere of the Forest of Death had already started to weigh heavily on the genin teams. The air was thick with tension, and the dark, winding paths between the trees seemed to stretch endlessly into the unknown. Team 7 had barely recovered from their last encounter with an enemy team when an even more sinister presence made itself known.
The forest was still—eerily so. The wind had died, and not even the chirping of insects or rustling leaves could be heard. It was as though nature itself was holding its breath.
Naruto's brows furrowed as he looked around. "Hey… does anyone else feel like… something's watching us?"
Sasuke tensed, his instincts sharpening. He'd been on edge ever since they entered the forest, but now there was something palpably wrong. It wasn't just the usual tension of danger lurking—it was a chilling, primal fear crawling up his spine.
Sakura shifted closer to her teammates, her hands gripping a kunai. "This place feels… off. We need to stay together."
Suddenly, a cold gust of wind blew through the trees, carrying with it a dark, oppressive chakra that made the hairs on the back of their necks stand up. It wasn't just malicious—it was suffocating. It pressed down on them, threatening to choke the air from their lungs.
Naruto took a step back, wide-eyed. "What… what is that?!"
Before anyone could respond, the forest seemed to come alive with movement. The trees bent unnaturally, shadows twisting and dancing as a figure emerged from the darkness. It was tall, draped in a flowing robe with long, jet-black hair cascading down its back. The figure's pale skin and snake-like features were shrouded in mystery as it moved with an unsettling grace, eyes gleaming with malice.
Sasuke's heart pounded in his chest. Whoever—or whatever—this was, they were far more dangerous than anyone they'd encountered before. His body moved instinctively, stepping in front of Sakura and Naruto, his hand already reaching for his kunai. "Stay back," he whispered through gritted teeth, his voice barely hiding the fear gnawing at him.
Naruto's bravado wavered as he felt the intensity of the figure's presence. "Who… who is this guy?"
The figure smiled, a cold, predatory grin. "You three are interesting… especially you, Uchiha Sasuke."
Sasuke's blood ran cold. How did this person know his name? His mind raced, trying to make sense of what was happening. "Who are you?!" he demanded, his voice sharp, though he could hear the edge of fear in his own words.
The man chuckled softly, his voice sending shivers down their spines. "That's not important right now. What matters is what you'll become… once I'm done with you."
Far away from Team 7, Kakashi Hatake stood with Anko Mitarashi near the entrance of the forest. They were discussing the state of the exam, but Kakashi could tell from Anko's tense expression that something was wrong.
Suddenly, Anko stiffened, her eyes narrowing. "That chakra… it's here."
Kakashi's heart skipped a beat. He knew what that tone meant. "What is it?" he asked, though he already had a sinking feeling.
Anko clenched her fists. "Orochimaru."
The name hit Kakashi like a hammer. His usually calm, nonchalant demeanor vanished, replaced by an icy dread. Orochimaru—one of the most dangerous criminals in the world—was here. And his students were in the middle of it.
Kakashi's stomach twisted. His kids—Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura—were still inexperienced, still growing, and they were far from ready for something like this. He hadn't prepared them for this. He cursed under his breath, his mind racing through worst-case scenarios.
"How do you know?" Kakashi asked, though he could already sense the dark chakra spreading through the forest.
"I'd recognize that vile chakra anywhere," Anko muttered, her face grim. "If he's here, it means he's targeting someone. But who?"
Kakashi clenched his fists, his mind immediately jumping to Sasuke. Of course Orochimaru would target the last Uchiha. His Sharingan, his potential—it was everything someone like Orochimaru would covet.
"I have to get to them," Kakashi said, already turning to rush into the forest. His heart hammered in his chest. He had to protect them. He couldn't let them face something like this alone—not against someone like Orochimaru.
But Anko stopped him, grabbing his arm. "Wait. If you rush in without knowing his exact location, you'll only get yourself killed."
Kakashi's jaw tightened. Every instinct in him screamed to move, to find his students, but he knew Anko was right. Rushing in blindly would only put them all in more danger. His mind raced, calculating. He had to be smart, had to trust that his team would hold out long enough for him to find them.
"Damn it…" he whispered, the fear for his students tightening in his chest. He'd faced powerful enemies before, but nothing terrified him more than the thought of losing his team.
Back in the forest, the tension had escalated to a boiling point. Sasuke's eyes were locked on the mysterious figure before them, every muscle in his body screaming to attack, to defend his team, but something about the man's presence paralyzed him with fear.
"I see the fear in your eyes, Sasuke," Orochimaru taunted, his voice smooth and mocking. "But fear can be such a powerful motivator, don't you think?"
Before Sasuke could react, Orochimaru's body seemed to blur, moving impossibly fast. In a split second, he was behind Sasuke, his hand gripping the boy's shoulder with a snake-like firmness.
Sakura gasped, her body frozen as her mind raced with terror. "S-Sasuke!"
Naruto, shaking off his initial fear, lunged at Orochimaru. "Get away from him, you creep!"
But Orochimaru easily dodged Naruto's attack, sending the boy tumbling to the ground with a flick of his wrist. The predator's smile never faltered as he turned his attention back to Sasuke. "So much potential, trapped in fear. Let me show you what true power can offer."
Sasuke gritted his teeth, struggling against Orochimaru's grip. His mind was a whirlwind of confusion, anger, and fear. He felt weak, powerless, despite everything he'd trained for. And yet, something inside him fought back, an instinct to protect his teammates. Even as his heart raced with terror, his body refused to crumble.
Orochimaru's cold fingers brushed against the back of Sasuke's neck. "Soon, you'll understand… everything."
Sasuke's vision blurred for a moment as a sharp, burning pain shot through his neck. He let out a cry, collapsing to his knees as Orochimaru stepped back, watching with a sickening smile as the cursed mark took hold.
"Sasuke!" Sakura screamed, rushing to his side, but her body trembled with fear. She reached for him, her hands shaking, but before she could help him, Orochimaru moved again.
Naruto, bloodied from his failed attack, staggered to his feet, glaring at Orochimaru with a ferocity that belied his fear. "Leave them alone!" he roared.
Orochimaru laughed softly. "I've done what I needed. The rest is up to you, Sasuke. I look forward to seeing what you'll become."
With that, the serpent-like man seemed to disappear into the shadows of the forest, leaving Team 7 behind in the eerie silence of the aftermath.
Sasuke lay on the ground, writhing in pain, his hand clutching his neck where the mark burned like fire. His breath came in ragged gasps, his face twisted in agony.
Sakura knelt beside him, her voice shaking. "Sasuke… are you okay? Sasuke, please, stay with us."
Naruto staggered over, wiping the blood from his lip. His face was a mixture of anger and worry. "What did that guy do to you? What's going on?!"
Sasuke couldn't answer. The pain was too overwhelming, and his mind was a blur of fear and confusion. He could feel the cursed mark pulsating, spreading its influence through his body, but he was powerless to stop it.
Sakura's hands trembled as she tried to figure out what to do. She wasn't a medical ninja—she didn't know how to help him. But she couldn't let him suffer like this.
"Naruto, we need to get out of here," Sakura said, her voice tight with panic. "We need to find help."
Naruto, despite his usual brashness, nodded grimly. "Yeah, let's get out of this creepy place."
As they helped Sasuke to his feet, his eyes fluttered open, and for a moment, Sakura thought she saw something different in them—something darker. But it vanished as quickly as it had appeared.
Together, they limped through the forest, the ominous presence of Orochimaru still lingering in the back of their minds. The Forest of Death was living up to its name, and now, more than ever, they realized just how out of their depth they were.
But they couldn't give up. Not now. Not when they have each other.
