Chapter 48: Week Two Begins

As the second week of training unfolded, Team 7's efforts intensified. Kakashi, always watching over his students with a mixture of care and scrutiny, decided it was time for Sakura to join Sasuke in his personal sessions. It was clear she had the potential, but what she needed now was refinement. Sakura was sharp with genjutsu basics but lacked the deeper understanding of when, where, and how to wield it like a true shinobi. Kakashi saw that in her, like a protective father who also knew when to push his children toward growth.

Naruto, on the other hand, had spent the last week under the watchful eyes of Ebisu, who was finally taking him seriously. For this week, the focus shifted to a new challenge—Wind Release. It wasn't the most complex jutsu, but it required sharp focus, something Naruto had always struggled with. Still, he attacked the training with his usual, loud enthusiasm, determined to master the winds.

Meanwhile, Sakura and Sasuke's sparring sessions became more intense as the days passed. Sasuke, even without speaking, acknowledged how much Sakura had grown. Her chakra control was impressive, and she was sharper with each passing day. They moved fluidly in combat, exchanging blows with mutual respect.

But during one session, as they locked in a particularly heated sequence of strikes, a misstep occurred. Sasuke slipped while dodging, sending them both sprawling onto the ground in a tangle of limbs. For a moment, neither moved, the situation suddenly awkward. They looked at each other, faces inches apart, cheeks flushed with something more than exertion.

Sakura stammered first. "Uh... you okay?"

"Yeah. You?" Sasuke replied, quickly moving to untangle himself, his usual cool demeanor shaken.

"Uh-huh," Sakura mumbled, brushing dirt off her clothes, awkwardly avoiding eye contact. It was a small, fleeting moment, but it left a light, almost ridiculous feeling lingering between them.

Kakashi, watching from a distance, chuckled silently to himself. His "kids" were growing up, even if they weren't fully aware of it.

Naruto, meanwhile, continued to focus hard on his Wind Release training. Ebisu's once-critical gaze softened as Naruto's determination never wavered, even when he struggled. Though the jutsu was basic, it was the start of something new—a force he could use to turn the tides in future battles.

Kakashi kept his eye on Naruto from afar, feeling a quiet pride at his student's progress. As the days went by, Kakashi couldn't help but marvel at how each of his students was carving their own path. Though they had much further to go, their bonds, their strengths, and even their silly teenage awkwardness made them something more. Something special.

After a long day of overseeing Sasuke and Sakura's sparring and glancing at Naruto's wind release attempts from afar, Kakashi sat on a nearby tree branch, a rare smile playing at the edge of his masked face. The world was quiet as dusk approached, with the last rays of sunlight filtering through the leaves. His mind wandered, not to the looming exams or the threats they faced, but to his team—his kids.

He'd been a sensei for a while now, but with each passing week, something had shifted. When he first took on Team 7, he was distant, seeing them more as a responsibility than anything else. But now, watching them grow, struggle, and push themselves beyond their limits, something clicked. It wasn't just that they were improving as shinobi—he had grown to care about them in a way that surprised even him.

Sakura, especially, had surprised him with her determination. She had always been capable, but there was something different now. The way she sought out knowledge, how she constantly pushed to be stronger—it reminded Kakashi of a younger version of himself. He was protective of her, like a father would be, silently rooting for her to succeed. And though she was still learning the intricacies of genjutsu, Kakashi knew that her raw potential was unmatched. Her growth made him proud, but more than that, it stirred a protective instinct he hadn't expected to feel.

He jumped down from the tree, landing softly near Sakura and Sasuke as they finished their sparring. Sakura gave him a tired smile, wiping sweat from her brow. Sasuke, as usual, remained composed, though Kakashi could tell from his breathing that the fight had worn him out.

"Good work today, you two," Kakashi said, his tone lighter than usual. "Keep this up, and you'll be more than ready for the finals."

Sakura's smile grew, a bit of pride showing. "Thanks, Kakashi-sensei."

Kakashi patted her on the shoulder, his heart warming at the bond growing between them. This team—his team—meant more to him than he'd ever expected. And despite the danger ahead, he knew they'd face it together.

Not too far away, Naruto was panting, his hands on his knees after another round of failed attempts at the Wind Release jutsu. But there was a fire in his eyes that Kakashi recognized all too well. Naruto was relentless, refusing to give up even when the results weren't immediate. It was that same fire that made him one of the most unpredictable, and in some ways, the most impressive of Kakashi's students.

As Kakashi watched Naruto throw himself into another attempt, he couldn't help but smile again, hidden beneath his mask. He'd always seen a bit of himself in Naruto—both of them had known loss, both had walked difficult paths, and yet, Naruto's resilience was something else. It was his spirit, his refusal to back down, that made him special.

They'll be ready, Kakashi thought, a deep sense of pride swelling in his chest.
