Chapter 51: A Day of Rest and Old Shadows
It was a rare sight—a day without intense training. After two grueling weeks of preparation, Kakashi had decided it was time for a break. The sun shone brightly as Team 7 walked together through the streets of Konoha, a sense of ease settling over them.
Naruto, ever the lively one, had been talking nonstop about ramen. "Come on, Kakashi-sensei, let's hit Ichiraku's! You can treat us, right?"
Sakura rolled her eyes, but a small smile tugged at her lips. "Naruto, all you ever think about is food."
Sasuke remained quiet, as usual, though there was a certain lightness in his posture. It had been a long two weeks, and even he was glad for a little downtime. They weren't just teammates—they were growing into something more, something like family. And Kakashi was their anchor.
Kakashi walked ahead of them, hands in his pockets as usual. "Well," he mused aloud, "we could go to my apartment instead. I have some food stocked, and it's quieter there."
Naruto perked up. "Your apartment, Kakashi-sensei? We've never seen it!"
Sakura chimed in, intrigued. "That could be fun. We haven't had a chance to just… relax together in a while."
With a nod of agreement, they headed toward Kakashi's place, Naruto bouncing with excitement at the thought of seeing his sensei's living space. The casual conversation carried them to a quiet part of the village where Kakashi's small apartment building stood.
When they arrived, Kakashi unlocked the door and pushed it open, revealing the modest apartment within. It was sparsely furnished—just a couch, a small kitchen table, and shelves filled with books and scrolls. The entire place was neat, but it was immediately apparent to Kakashi that his apartment wasn't exactly suited for entertaining.
Naruto, however, didn't mind. He bounced into the apartment, looking around curiously. "Whoa, sensei! This is where you live? It's kinda small…"
Sakura glanced around, noticing the lack of space. "Yeah, it's nice, but it's... not exactly roomy, is it?"
Sasuke, ever the observant one, said nothing, but Kakashi could see the way his eyes scanned the area, taking in the small quarters.
Kakashi rubbed the back of his head, a sheepish expression hidden beneath his mask. "Yeah, I guess it's a bit cramped for all of us, huh?" He glanced at his three students, realizing how much space they actually needed as a team—especially if they were going to spend more time together outside of missions.
A thought flickered in his mind. Maybe it's time... He had avoided it for so long. His old clan home—the Hatake estate—had been untouched for years. It was much larger, but also full of memories he had kept buried. He had been reluctant to return to it after his father's death, and the thought of revisiting the place stirred something uneasy in his chest.
But looking at his team now—Naruto, with his boundless energy; Sakura, with her growing confidence; and Sasuke, with his quiet determination—Kakashi felt something shift. Perhaps it was time to let go of some of the past.
"Well," Kakashi said, his voice soft but steady, "maybe we need more space. There's… another place. It's a bit bigger, but it'll take some cleaning up."
Naruto's eyes lit up. "Another place? Where? Is it awesome?"
Sasuke, who rarely asked personal questions, raised an eyebrow. "Your clan home?"
Kakashi nodded slowly, feeling the weight of his own history in that one word. "Yeah. My clan home. I haven't been there in a long time, but... maybe it's time to go back."
Later that day, the four of them stood at the edge of the Hatake estate. The large gates, overgrown with vines, stood as a reminder of the years Kakashi had left it unattended. Beyond the gates lay the expansive house and grounds that had once been his family's.
Naruto whistled low, eyes wide. "Whoa, Kakashi-sensei… this place is huge!"
Sakura stepped forward, her eyes scanning the old estate. "It must've been beautiful in its prime."
Kakashi remained silent for a moment, staring at the gates. Memories flashed through his mind—his father, the White Fang of Konoha, teaching him the basics of kunai throwing in the courtyard, laughing together, then the silence that had followed after his father's disgrace and death. He had left this place behind, locked the doors, and buried those memories deep.
But now, standing here with his students—his team—it felt different. The old sadness was still there, lingering in the air, but it wasn't as heavy as before. Maybe it was because he wasn't alone this time.
With a deep breath, Kakashi pushed open the gates. Dust rose into the air as the old wood creaked. The house beyond was large, its windows clouded with years of neglect. The garden, once meticulously maintained, had grown wild and tangled.
"Let's get to work," Kakashi said quietly, leading them inside.
The hours passed as they cleaned the house, sweeping away the dust and opening the windows to let in the fresh air. Naruto and Sakura worked together, scrubbing floors and tidying up furniture. Sasuke moved silently, helping Kakashi repair a few old fixtures that had fallen into disrepair.
Despite the somber nature of the place, laughter echoed through the halls as Naruto cracked jokes, lightening the mood. Sakura smiled as she wiped down an old table, watching her teammates. Even Sasuke, though reserved, seemed more at ease in the peaceful atmosphere.
As they worked, Kakashi felt something warm bloom in his chest. It was strange, being back here, but his students—no, his kids—were bringing life back into this place. The shadows of his past still lingered, but they didn't feel as oppressive anymore.
When they finally finished for the day, the house looked much more like a home again. Kakashi stood in the doorway, gazing at the clean, sunlit room. His kids lounged around, clearly exhausted but content.
Sakura stretched her arms, wiping the sweat from her brow. "It's starting to look really nice, Kakashi-sensei."
Naruto, lying on the floor, let out a dramatic sigh. "Man, this was hard work, but it's kinda cool to see it all come together."
Sasuke leaned against the wall, quiet as usual, but Kakashi noticed the small, almost imperceptible smile on his face.
Kakashi's eye softened as he looked at them. For so long, this place had represented pain and loss, but now, with his team around him, it felt different. It felt like... healing.
"I think we'll make this our base," Kakashi said quietly, his voice filled with something that sounded almost like hope. "We'll stay here from now on."
Naruto grinned, his eyes lighting up. "Heck yeah! Team 7's new home!"
Sakura smiled warmly. "Thank you, Kakashi-sensei."
Sasuke simply nodded, but Kakashi understood. This wasn't just a house anymore—it was a place for them. A place where they could grow, learn, and be together.
As the day came to a close, Kakashi stood outside the estate, the evening breeze ruffling his hair. He looked up at the sky, feeling lighter than he had in years. His kids had brought light into his life, and for the first time in a long time, Kakashi felt a sense of peace.
