Chapter 56: Anko's Warning
The sun was setting as the cool evening air filled the Hatake clan house. Team 7 had just finished another intense day of training, their bodies aching but their spirits high. Kakashi stood in the doorway, watching his students rest in the living room, each of them sprawled across their sleeping bags, too tired to move. Sakura had finally started getting the hang of swinging her battle axe, and the boys had been sparring with their new weapons—Naruto with his basic Wind Release techniques and Sasuke with his katana, his Sharingan spinning as he honed his skills.
A sudden knock on the door pulled Kakashi from his thoughts.
He opened it to find Anko Mitarashi standing on his doorstep, her expression unusually serious. She leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, her usual mischievous smirk replaced with something far graver.
"Kakashi," she said in a low voice. "We need to talk."
Without waiting for an invitation, she stepped inside, her eyes darting to the kids sprawled on the floor. Kakashi followed her gaze, noticing the way her eyes lingered on Sasuke.
He quietly closed the door behind her and gestured for her to follow him into the hallway. Once they were far enough from the kids, he leaned against the wall, his face obscured by the dim light.
"What's this about, Anko?" he asked, his tone casual, though he already had a suspicion about what she wanted to discuss.
Anko didn't waste time with pleasantries. "It's about Uchiha." Her voice was sharp, each word carrying weight. "That curse mark on his neck. You know as well as I do what it means."
Kakashi's eyes narrowed behind his mask. He hadn't forgotten about the curse mark Orochimaru had placed on Sasuke during the Chūnin Exams. In fact, it was something that had been gnawing at him ever since the boy returned from the Forest of Death. Kakashi had done what he could to suppress it with his Evil Sealing Method, but that was only a temporary measure. He knew that sooner or later, Sasuke would have to confront the dark power lurking within him.
"I've sealed it," Kakashi replied calmly, though his mind was anything but calm. "For now, it's under control."
Anko let out a bitter laugh. "Sealed it? That's not going to last forever, Kakashi. Orochimaru's curse marks don't just vanish with a bit of chakra and ink. You know what happens to those who are marked. They're drawn to him. Whether Sasuke wants to admit it or not, that thing is going to fester, grow stronger—and eventually, he'll crave the power it offers."
Kakashi's gaze hardened. "I'm aware."
Anko took a step closer, her eyes intense. "Then you also know what kind of hell that kid's headed for if we don't do something. Orochimaru won't stop until he gets his hands on Sasuke, and the curse mark is just the beginning."
Kakashi's jaw tightened, the weight of her words sinking in. He hadn't needed the reminder. Every day he trained Sasuke, he could see the boy's hunger for power growing—his determination to surpass everyone, even at the cost of his own well-being. The curse mark was only feeding that ambition, whispering dark promises into his mind.
"Do you think I don't know what's at stake?" Kakashi's voice was low but firm. "I'm not going to let Orochimaru have him. Sasuke is my responsibility now."
Anko's gaze softened slightly, but the concern in her voice remained. "I know you're doing what you can, Kakashi. But you have to realize, Sasuke's not like the others. That kid... he's walking a dangerous path. I've seen it before. If we're not careful, he could slip right through our fingers."
Kakashi remained silent for a moment, his mind racing. He knew Anko was right. Sasuke was different. His past, the massacre of his clan, his thirst for revenge—all of it made him vulnerable to the curse mark's influence. And Kakashi wasn't sure how much longer Sasuke could resist that temptation.
"I'll keep a close eye on him," Kakashi finally said, his voice resolute. "I won't let him fall to Orochimaru."
Anko gave him a long, hard look before nodding. "I hope you're right. For all our sakes."
They stood in silence for a moment, the gravity of the situation hanging between them. Anko turned to leave, pausing at the doorway. "If you need help with this, don't hesitate to ask. I've been down that road before... I know what it's like to fight that kind of darkness."
Kakashi's eyes softened. "Thanks, Anko."
As she walked out into the night, Kakashi remained in the hallway, his mind swirling with thoughts of Sasuke and the curse mark. He knew the road ahead wouldn't be easy—not for Sasuke, not for any of them. But he wasn't going to let Orochimaru take another student from him. Not this time.
He walked back into the living room, where the kids were still resting. Sasuke, lying on his back with his arms folded, stared up at the ceiling, seemingly deep in thought. Naruto was already snoring softly, while Sakura sat with her knees pulled up to her chest, a book on genjutsu open in her lap.
Kakashi's gaze lingered on Sasuke, the boy's dark eyes reflecting a storm of emotions he kept hidden from the others. The curse mark might be sealed for now, but Kakashi knew that Orochimaru's influence would continue to haunt Sasuke. And the worst part? Sasuke wasn't the type to ask for help.
Kakashi took a deep breath and sat down beside his students, pulling out his own sleeping bag. The house was quiet, but the weight of his responsibility was heavier than ever.
No matter how much darkness loomed over them, he would protect them.
As Kakashi lay in his sleeping bag, staring up at the ceiling of the dimly lit room, his mind wandered back to the conversation he had with Anko earlier that evening. The weight of Sasuke's curse mark, the threat of Orochimaru, and the boy's internal struggles had been gnawing at him. But now, as the soft sounds of his students' breathing filled the room, he allowed himself a moment to reflect on something else—something that had been quietly growing within Sasuke.
Change.
Kakashi turned his head slightly, watching Sasuke from across the room. The boy was still awake, his eyes focused somewhere far away, as if he were lost in thoughts of his own. But those eyes… there was something different about them now. Something that gave Kakashi a glimmer of hope.
In the past few weeks, Kakashi had noticed the subtle shifts in Sasuke's demeanor. His once cold, vengeful gaze had begun to soften, even if just a little. There was still that fierce determination—no doubt, Sasuke would always be driven by his desire to become stronger—but now, there was also something else. A flicker of trust. A willingness to listen. And most importantly, a connection to his teammates, even if he wasn't fully aware of it himself.
Kakashi closed his eyes, recalling their recent training sessions. There had been moments where Sasuke had looked at him, not with the distant, hardened expression of someone walking a solitary path, but with the look of a student searching for guidance. The Sharingan that now adorned his eyes, fully developed with three tomoe, was a testament to his growth. But beyond the physical abilities, Kakashi had seen something deeper—a shift in Sasuke's spirit.
For the first time in a long while, Sasuke wasn't fighting alone. He was part of something bigger than his own quest for revenge, even if he hadn't fully realized it yet. His bond with Naruto, his subtle concern for Sakura—it was all there, just beneath the surface. And Kakashi, though always prepared for the worst, couldn't help but feel a sense of cautious optimism.
Maybe, just maybe, Sasuke wouldn't fall into the darkness after all.
Kakashi sighed softly, his heart lighter than it had been in weeks. He had seen it in Sasuke's eyes—the determination to grow, not just in power but in something more. He wasn't the same boy who had once viewed his teammates as little more than obstacles. Slowly, Sasuke was starting to see the value in the people around him, to realize that strength wasn't just about power—it was about connection, loyalty, and purpose.
As he lay there, Kakashi allowed himself to smile beneath his mask, feeling a rare sense of hope. There was still a long road ahead, and the threat of Orochimaru was far from over. But for now, he would hold on to that spark of change he had seen in Sasuke's eyes.
Maybe there was hope for him after all.
