Chapter 66: Warmth of Home

Kakashi stepped into his quiet apartment, the stillness wrapping around him like a cold blanket. The sounds of the village buzzed faintly in the distance, but his home felt detached from the world outside. He sighed, tossing his headband onto the table, and looked around the small space he'd called home for years.

But something was missing now.

After everything that had happened—the battles, the loss of the Third, the looming uncertainty—he realized it wasn't just about the silence. It was the emptiness. He had grown so accustomed to being with his team, watching over them, that being here alone felt... wrong.

His thoughts wandered to his students, to Naruto's boundless energy, Sakura's determination, and Sasuke's quiet strength. Without even deciding, his legs moved on their own, carrying him out of the apartment and toward his clan's mansion. It had become more of a refuge lately—a place that felt alive again, thanks to them.

When Kakashi arrived, the soft glow of light through the windows greeted him. He heard muffled voices and the clatter of dishes. His heart warmed.

As he opened the door, he was met with a surprising sight. Sakura was by the kitchen counter, chopping vegetables with an intense focus, while Sasuke stood beside her, silently helping with the dishes. Naruto, on the other hand, was halfway through the living room, clearly about to leave. He froze when he saw Kakashi, blinking in surprise.

"Ah! Kakashi-sensei! I was just about to go find you," Naruto said, grinning sheepishly.

Kakashi raised an eyebrow, stepping fully into the room. "Looks like I'm just in time."

Sakura turned around with a bright smile, a kitchen towel draped over her shoulder. "Sensei, you're back! We thought we'd make dinner for once. Well, Naruto sort of insisted."

Naruto puffed his chest proudly. "We figured you needed a break! Plus, it's not like I'm that bad in the kitchen!"

Sasuke glanced over, his smirk barely noticeable. "Not that bad, huh?"

Naruto shot him a glare, but Kakashi only chuckled. The sight of them working together, sharing the space like a real family, filled him with a warmth he hadn't felt in a long time.

"You all did a great job," Kakashi said, his voice softer than usual. "It's good to see you here."

Naruto gave him a confused look. "Where else would we be?"

Kakashi didn't answer, but a part of him knew that they'd unknowingly filled a hole in his life—one he didn't even realize had been growing deeper. His clan's house had always been a reminder of solitude, but now, with his team here, it felt... alive.

As they sat down around the table, the air filled with the delicious smell of food, the conversation naturally flowed. Naruto filled Kakashi in on the details of the day, while Sakura scolded Naruto for nearly burning part of the meal, and Sasuke quietly observed with his usual calm demeanor.

At some point, Kakashi cleared his throat, drawing their attention. "There's something I need to talk to you all about," he started, his tone growing serious, but the warmth of his gaze remained. "I've spoken with Jiraiya. He's offered to train Naruto for a while."

Naruto's eyes lit up. "Wait, really?!"

Kakashi nodded. "Yes, but we thought it might be best if the entire team went on this mission. We're going to find Tsunade, one of the legendary Sannin. She's the best candidate for the next Hokage."

The room fell silent for a moment as they processed the news.

"You mean we're all going?" Sakura asked, her excitement barely contained.

"That's the plan," Kakashi said, smiling slightly. "It's not just about Naruto's training—it'll be good for all of you. Plus, Tsunade will be a powerful ally once we convince her to come back."

Naruto pumped his fist in the air, grinning ear to ear. "Yes! Another mission with all of us! I can't wait!"

Sakura, however, crossed her arms and pouted. "Ugh! It's so unfair. I didn't even get to fight in the Chunin Exams properly. Everyone else got their chance."

Sasuke smirked at her reaction, while Naruto shrugged, trying not to laugh. Kakashi chuckled, leaning back in his seat.

"I wouldn't worry too much about that, Sakura," Kakashi reassured her. "There's still a lot ahead of you. As for the Chunin promotions... well, it's up to the village council. But with everything that's happened, I wouldn't be surprised if there were some changes coming soon."

Sakura sighed dramatically but nodded. "I guess..."

"You'll get your chance," Sasuke said, his voice low but confident. "We all will."

Naruto grinned at that, nodding in agreement. "Yeah, Sakura! We've still got tons of fights ahead. You'll get to smash someone with that axe of yours soon enough."

Kakashi shook his head, amused by their banter. As the conversation shifted back to lighter topics, he glanced around the table, taking in the sight of his team—their faces, their energy, their camaraderie. It filled him with a deep sense of pride and warmth.

In this moment, surrounded by his students, Kakashi felt more at peace than he had in years. His home wasn't just the walls around them—it was the people he cared for, the family he had chosen. And no matter what challenges lay ahead, he knew they would face them together.

As dinner wrapped up, Naruto pushed back his chair with a satisfied sigh, patting his stomach. "That was awesome! I'm stuffed."

Sasuke raised an eyebrow. "You're always stuffed."

Naruto stuck out his tongue, but before they could launch into their usual banter, Sakura, still a bit pouty about the Chunin Exams, set her fork down and asked, "So... about this trip. We're leaving soon, right?"

Kakashi nodded. "Yes, probably in a day or two. Jiraiya wants to head out as soon as possible."

Sakura bit her lip, thinking. "I should probably let my parents know... but I don't even know what to tell them."

Kakashi's face softened, remembering his recent concerns about her home life. "You should tell them the truth. You're part of this mission, and this is important for the village."

Sakura's eyes flickered with hesitation, but she nodded. "Yeah, I'll... I'll tell them."

Naruto, ever blunt, chimed in, "They'll understand! Besides, you're a ninja. They've gotta know we get sent on missions all the time."

Sasuke remained quiet, though his dark eyes were clearly reflecting his own thoughts. He wasn't sure what he'd do about the Uchiha compound. There was no one left to tell, but he still felt the weight of his family's legacy pressing on him. For a moment, the thought of leaving it behind made him uneasy.

But something else had been bothering him, too, ever since Kakashi mentioned Jiraiya training Naruto. "What about us?" Sasuke asked, his voice cutting through the light atmosphere, making everyone pause.

"What do you mean?" Kakashi asked, leaning forward.

"You said Jiraiya would train Naruto," Sasuke started, his tone steady but curious. "But what about us? What happens to our training?"

Sakura nodded in agreement, her curiosity piqued. "Yeah... I mean, we're all going on this mission together, but is it just Naruto getting trained? What about the rest of us?"

There was a subtle pause in the air, the weight of their words sinking in. Kakashi had anticipated this question. The bond they had as a team was strong, but there was also an unspoken understanding about Naruto being different—about him being a jinchūriki.

Sasuke's gaze sharpened, the gears in his mind turning. "It's because of the Nine-Tails, isn't it? That's why Jiraiya wants to train Naruto."

Naruto's wide grin faded slightly, his expression becoming more serious. He scratched the back of his head, unsure of how to respond, but Kakashi stepped in.

"Yes, Sasuke," Kakashi said carefully, his tone measured. "Naruto is a jinchūriki, and Jiraiya is uniquely qualified to help him control that power."

Naruto, sensing the shift in the room, gave a small, determined nod. "It's true. I still have a lot to learn about the Nine-Tails, and Jiraiya-sensei can help me with that."

Sakura's brow furrowed. "But what about us? What's going to happen with our training while you're learning all of this, Naruto?"

Kakashi leaned back slightly, considering his response. "Jiraiya's focus will be on Naruto because of the nature of his power, but that doesn't mean you two will be left out. I'll still be here to train both of you during the mission. You'll be growing just as much."

Sasuke's jaw tightened, frustration flashing in his eyes. "Naruto gets special training because of what's inside him. And what about me? What's my path?"

Kakashi's expression softened, understanding the underlying tension. He knew Sasuke's concerns were deeper than just training—they were tied to the burden of revenge that hung over him like a shadow. "You have your own power, Sasuke. It's different, but no less important. This trip isn't just about Naruto's growth. It's about all of you becoming stronger. We'll find a way to make sure you're ready for what's ahead."

Sakura's gaze flicked between the two boys before resting on Kakashi again. "So, we're all going on this trip, and while Naruto's learning about the Nine-Tails, we'll be... what? Helping him, but also training on our own?"

Kakashi smiled faintly. "Exactly. You're a team. What happens to one of you affects all of you. This isn't just Naruto's journey—it's all of yours."

Naruto, now fully back to his usual self, punched the air with enthusiasm. "Yeah, don't worry! We're in this together, and I'm not leaving you guys behind. Whatever happens, we'll keep training and getting stronger."

Sasuke's tension eased slightly at that, though his eyes remained focused on Kakashi. "I'm not going to fall behind."

"You won't," Kakashi reassured him. "None of you will."

Sakura gave a small smile, though a bit of uncertainty still lingered in her expression. "Alright... I trust you, Kakashi-sensei. And... I'll talk to my parents about the trip. They'll probably want to know why it's so important."

Naruto gave her a supportive grin. "If they need convincing, just tell them Jiraiya's the legendary Pervy Sage! Who wouldn't want their kid trained by someone like that?"

Sakura rolled her eyes but couldn't help laughing. "I'll leave out the 'Pervy Sage' part, thanks."

Kakashi chuckled, the atmosphere lightening again. "Good plan, Sakura. We'll leave in a few days, so make sure you're all prepared. It's going to be an interesting journey."

As the conversation shifted back to lighter topics, Kakashi felt a sense of pride swell within him. Despite the uncertainties, his team was ready for what lay ahead. They were growing, learning to trust not just each other but also themselves.

And though Naruto's training with Jiraiya was essential, Kakashi knew that both Sasuke and Sakura would have their own paths to follow—paths that would make them stronger, too.
