Chapter 68: A Quiet Friend

The sun was setting, casting a warm orange glow over the village. The training grounds were quiet for once, the usual bustle of shinobi having cleared out for the day. Sasuke sat against a tree, lost in thought as he stared out into the distance. His body was sore from all the intense training, but his mind was elsewhere—specifically, on Sakura.

After what happened with her parents, Sasuke had been feeling a strange sense of discomfort. He had seen how hurt she was, how her confidence had crumbled in front of the people who should have been her greatest supporters. And though he wasn't the best with words, something inside him wanted to help, even if he didn't know how.

Sakura was sitting on a bench nearby, staring down at the ground. She looked distracted, her usual bright energy dulled, as if weighed down by something she couldn't shake off. Sasuke watched her for a moment, feeling the unfamiliar tug of concern.

He wasn't good at comforting people. He knew that. But for some reason, he wanted to try.

He stood up, awkwardly making his way over to her. When he sat down next to her, she barely reacted, only glancing at him briefly before going back to her thoughts.

"Sakura," Sasuke began, his voice soft and uncertain. He didn't know where to start, or what to say. But he had to say something. "You... okay?"

Sakura blinked, then let out a small, humorless laugh. "I'm fine, Sasuke," she said, though her voice betrayed her true feelings. "Just thinking."

Sasuke frowned slightly, his dark eyes narrowing. "You don't look fine."

Sakura sighed, her shoulders slumping as she leaned back on the bench. "It's just... my parents," she admitted quietly, not meeting his gaze. "They act like they care, but they don't. Not really."

Sasuke didn't know what it was like to have parents anymore, but he remembered them. He remembered how his mother always knew when something was wrong, and how his father's quiet approval had meant the world to him. For Sakura to feel that distance, it made something in his chest tighten. She shouldn't have to go through that.

"You shouldn't care what they think," he said, though he wasn't sure if that was the right thing to say. "They're wrong."

Sakura glanced at him, surprised by his bluntness. "I know that," she said softly. "It's just... it still hurts, you know?"

Sasuke nodded. He did know. He had carried his own pain for years, but this was different. It was her pain. He sat there for a long moment, his mind working through how to approach this.

Without saying a word, he reached into his pouch and pulled out a small packet of dango. He had picked it up earlier but hadn't gotten around to eating it. He shoved it toward her awkwardly, avoiding her gaze as he offered it.

"Here."

Sakura blinked at the gesture, looking from the dango to Sasuke with wide eyes. "You bought this?"

He grunted, still not looking at her. "I didn't get it for you," he muttered, but there was no real conviction in his voice. "Just take it."

A small smile tugged at Sakura's lips as she accepted the dango. "Thanks, Sasuke."

They sat in silence for a few minutes, the warmth of the setting sun falling over them like a blanket. Sakura took a bite of the sweet treat, feeling a bit of the heaviness in her heart lift. Sasuke was trying, in his own awkward way, and it made her feel a little less alone.

After a while, Sasuke spoke again. "Your parents," he said slowly, "they don't define you."

Sakura looked at him, surprised by the seriousness in his tone. He was staring straight ahead, his expression unreadable.

"They don't see what you're capable of. We do. I do." His voice was quiet but firm. "You don't need their approval to know your worth."

Sakura felt a lump form in her throat, her eyes watering at his words. She wiped them quickly, not wanting him to see her cry. "Sasuke..."

He glanced at her, his eyes softening slightly. "You're strong, Sakura. You've always been strong. Don't forget that."

A long pause followed, as Sakura let his words sink in. For all of Sasuke's coldness and distance, moments like this reminded her of why she cared about him so much. He didn't show it often, but when he did, it was real.

"Thank you, Sasuke," she said quietly, her voice full of emotion. "I needed to hear that."

Sasuke gave a small nod, turning his gaze back to the horizon. "Don't mention it."

They stayed like that for a while, the two of them sitting side by side as the sun dipped lower in the sky. The silence between them wasn't awkward or heavy—it was comforting, like the presence of a close friend who didn't need to say much to show they cared.

Naruto came bounding over a little later, his usual energy breaking the calm moment. "Hey, what are you two doing just sitting around? Let's go eat!"

Sakura smiled, feeling a bit more like herself. "Yeah, let's go," she said, standing up and dusting herself off.

As the three of them made their way back to Kakashi's place for dinner, Sakura couldn't help but feel grateful. Her team—her family—was here for her, even when her real family wasn't.

And for now, that was enough.

As they made their way back to Kakashi's place, the smell of dinner already starting to waft in the air, Kakashi appeared on the rooftop, casually leaning against the railing. He watched the trio walking together below, a smirk playing on his lips.

"Well, well," Kakashi called down, his voice laced with playful amusement. "It seems our resident lone wolf has a soft spot after all."

Sasuke tensed immediately, his expression turning into a scowl. He knew where this was going. "What are you talking about?" he grumbled, refusing to meet Kakashi's gaze.

Kakashi hopped down gracefully from the roof, landing lightly in front of them. His visible eye gleamed with mischief as he glanced between Sasuke and Sakura. "Oh, nothing," he said, dragging out the words in a teasing tone. "Just noticing how someone went from brooding in silence to handing out sweets and words of comfort."

Sakura stifled a giggle, covering her mouth with her hand as Sasuke shot Kakashi a glare, his face flushing slightly. "I was just being practical," Sasuke muttered defensively. "She looked upset. It wasn't a big deal."

Naruto, oblivious to the tension, burst into laughter. "Sasuke, you gave her dango? I didn't even think you knew what sweets were!"

Sasuke clenched his fists, clearly mortified by the teasing. "It was nothing," he growled, starting to walk ahead, trying to escape the conversation. "You're all being stupid."

Kakashi, never one to let an opportunity slip by, stepped beside Sasuke, draping an arm casually over his shoulder. "Oh come on, Sasuke," he teased, ruffling the younger boy's hair in a rare show of affection. "Admitting you care about your teammates won't kill you. Who knew you had such a big heart under all that cool exterior?"

Sasuke shrugged Kakashi's arm off, muttering something under his breath, his face slightly redder than before. Sakura, still smiling, glanced over at him, her eyes soft with gratitude.

"Thanks, Sasuke," she said quietly. "Really."

Sasuke gave a curt nod, avoiding everyone's eyes as Kakashi stepped back, satisfied with the level of discomfort he'd inflicted on his normally stoic student.

"Don't worry," Kakashi said with a grin, walking ahead of them. "It'll be our little secret. No need for anyone else to know how much you've grown, Sasuke."

Naruto couldn't resist jumping in one more time. "Hey, if Sasuke keeps this up, maybe he'll start bringing us all sweets!" He snickered, dodging as Sasuke half-heartedly swatted at him.

As they finally reached the door, Kakashi turned around, his tone shifting to something softer, more genuine. "In all seriousness, you're doing well, Sasuke," he said quietly. "You've all grown up, and I'm proud of you."

Sasuke, still grumpy from the teasing, didn't respond, but the slight softening in his expression was enough for Kakashi. The teasing was all in good fun, but there was no denying that Sasuke's growth was real—and it was something worth celebrating.

With a final smirk, Kakashi opened the door to let them inside. "Come on, let's eat before Naruto devours everything in sight."

And with that, they stepped into the warmth of their shared home, the playful banter lingering in the air, the bonds between them stronger than ever.
