Chapter 69: The Day They Leave*
The sun was only starting to rise, casting a warm golden hue over Konoha as Team 7 prepared for their mission. They each had one final stop to make before regrouping: their homes and last goodbyes to the places they once called home.
Sasuke entered his apartment in the Uchiha compound, the silence of his clan's quarters heavy and pressing. It was as if the air remembered the shadows that once haunted these streets. Each step echoed off the empty walls, the familiar layout feeling cold and distant. He stepped into his room, looking around at his neatly arranged weapons and scrolls. Everything was in order, untouched by anything other than his hand.
He picked up his bag, his fingers brushing the old photo of his family tucked beneath his extra kunai pouch. Despite everything, despite the years he'd spent here, it felt hollow—just another space. Yet, as he turned to leave, the thought of rejoining his team made something in his chest stir. He took a last glance, closing the door behind him, already feeling a sense of comfort at the thought of returning to the mansion.
Naruto flung open the door to his tiny apartment, immediately greeted by the mess he'd left it in. He glanced around, scratching the back of his head at the sight of half-packed clothes and stray instant ramen cups. Normally, this was his sanctuary, his place to come home to after a long day, but somehow, it didn't feel the same anymore.
As he gathered his belongings, the silence of the apartment seemed louder than usual. Naruto paused, looking over at his cluttered shelf and worn-out bed, and realized he didn't feel much at all—no tug, no reluctance. But as he hefted his pack over his shoulder and thought of Team 7 waiting, a grin spread across his face. The mansion was his real home now, and he couldn't wait to get back.
Sakura moved through her house quietly, not wanting to disturb her parents. She'd told them again last night that she'd be gone for a while, but they hadn't seemed overly concerned—just a few absent nods and comments about her being safe. Her heart tightened as she packed her small bag, looking around her bedroom. She should feel sentimental, but somehow, she didn't.
She folded her clothes, picked up her kunai pouch, and glanced at the mirror. The reflection showed her determination, her resolve. Stepping out into the hallway, she didn't linger. Instead, she felt her heart pull her toward where she wanted to be, where she knew she belonged—with her team.
Kakashi locked his apartment door behind him, his eyes glancing over the dimly lit room one last time. It had always been more of a resting place than a home, a space to eat, sleep, and read without interruption. But as he looked around at his few belongings, there was no regret, no attachment. All his essentials were packed, and there wasn't much else left here for him anyway.
As he turned his back on the quiet, impersonal apartment, he felt a warmth fill his chest at the thought of his team—his family. Soon, he would be with them, and the mansion they had all come to share. That was what mattered most.
One by one, they made their way to the mansion, each arriving at the front door as the early morning mist lifted. Sasuke was already waiting when Naruto and Sakura arrived, a silent nod passing between them. Moments later, Kakashi appeared, as calm and composed as ever.
As soon as they were together, Kakashi fell naturally into the role of a protective, slightly overbearing guardian. He ran through the checklist, a determined glint in his eye as he fussed over their supplies.
"Everyone got their gear? Rations? Medical supplies?" he asked, his voice stern yet somehow warm.
"Yes, yes," Naruto huffed, but his smile was soft, grateful. "We're not going into a war or anything!"
"You never know with Jiraiya," Kakashi replied, his eye crinkling. "Better to be prepared."
He turned to Sasuke, eyeing his pack critically. "You have enough kunai?"
"Yes, sensei," Sasuke replied, rolling his eyes. "I'm not an amateur."
Kakashi grinned, his look saying, *No, you're not, but you're still my student.*
Sakura, holding her pack, smiled at the scene, a warm flutter in her heart. Kakashi's fussing felt comforting, like something she'd imagined a family would do before a journey. "Thanks, Kakashi-sensei," she said quietly, watching him check his supplies with that same careful attention to detail.
Finally, Kakashi nodded, apparently satisfied. He slung his pack over his shoulder and looked at them, his expression softening. "Alright, everyone. Let's head out."
As they walked together down the path, the light breeze stirring the morning mist around them, they felt it. A sense of unity, of being complete—no matter where they were, as long as they had each other. They were home.
At the Konoha gates, Team 7 found Jiraiya waiting with his arms crossed, an amused grin stretching across his face. "Took you guys long enough," he teased.
Just as they were about to step out, a shout echoed down the path. "Kakashi! Hold on!"
Turning, they saw Anko sprinting towards them, her expression a mix of worry and irritation. The kids exchanged glances, struggling to hide their grins as she came to a stop in front of Kakashi, slightly out of breath but determined.
"Kakashi, you better be careful out there," she said firmly, hands on her hips as she fixed him with a look. "No risky heroics, alright?"
Kakashi's visible eye softened, and he nodded with a small, calm smile. "I'll be careful, Anko. Besides," he added, glancing at his team, "I've got a few people making sure I stay in line."
Anko's serious look shifted to a smirk as she glanced over Team 7. "Good. And take care of them, too," she added, nodding to the kids, her gaze lingering for just a second longer on him.
With an exaggerated sigh, she gave him a quick shove on the shoulder. "Don't keep me waiting too long, you hear?"
Kakashi's eye sparkled with amusement. "Wouldn't dream of it."
As they set off, Kakashi cast one last look back at Anko and gave her a small wave, his gaze lingering a heartbeat longer than usual.
Jiraiya, not missing a thing, nudged him playfully. "Well, well, Kakashi. Quite the send-off from *someone special, hmm?"
Kakashi gave a shrug, the corner of his mouth quirking slightly. "She's just a friend, Jiraiya."
Naruto stifled a snicker, while Sakura shot Kakashi a knowing smile, and Sasuke rolled his eyes, pretending not to listen.
Jiraiya chuckled, raising an eyebrow. "Right, 'just a friend' who seems awfully keen on you coming back in one piece."
Kakashi didn't argue, his smile just a bit more thoughtful than usual as they walked on, the friendly exchange carrying a subtle warmth that lingered in the air. It was unspoken, and yet, as they ventured into the open road, it brought a sense of comfort—a sense that they had friends waiting for them, and perhaps, someone a little more than that, too.
