Chapter 70: Hot Springs Hijinks
The morning sun crested over the horizon, painting the skies with hues of amber and rose as Team 7 and Jiraiya journeyed through the winding forest paths. Spirits were high; the team, energized by the excitement of their first major mission outside the village, chatted happily. Naruto bounced beside Jiraiya, firing off question after question, while Sakura and Sasuke lingered back with Kakashi.
"Kakashi-sensei," Naruto began, a sly grin spreading across his face, "have you ever taken a team to an onsen before?"
Kakashi raised a brow, clearly suspicious of the sudden, pointed question. "No, can't say I have. Why?"
Sakura jumped in, eyes bright. "Well, we were just thinking… after all this training, we deserve a break, right?" She looked hopefully at Kakashi, her most persuasive smile in place. "And what better way to do that than relaxing at a nice hot spring?"
Sasuke, hands in his pockets, tried to act uninterested but added, "It would be useful for recovery," giving Kakashi an impressively logical reason.
Kakashi glanced at them all, amused but skeptical. "You do realize this is a mission, right? We're not on vacation."
Naruto wasn't giving up that easily. "Come on, Kakashi-sensei! We've been working so hard, and it'll be good to get some rest! Jiraiya-sama can teach us the legendary ways of, uh… hot springs meditation!"
Jiraiya's eyes twinkled with mischief. "I must say, Kakashi, the kid has a point. True shinobi wisdom can only be found in an onsen."
Kakashi gave a long-suffering sigh, pinching the bridge of his nose. "I'm supposed to be the one teaching wisdom here, not encouraging mischief."
Sakura gave him a nudge. "Please, Kakashi-sensei? Just this once?"
Kakashi looked at each of his students—their eager, pleading expressions all but impossible to resist. Finally, he relented, smiling behind his mask. "Fine, but only because I know none of you will leave me alone until I agree."
"YES!" Naruto pumped his fist, while Sakura cheered and even Sasuke couldn't hide the faint smirk tugging at his lips.
Not long after, they arrived at the onsen village, the wooden buildings surrounded by gentle clouds of steam that drifted over the hot spring waters. The team checked in, Kakashi rolling his eyes as the kids practically bolted toward the changing rooms.
After settling into the onsen village, Team 7 split up. Naruto, Sasuke, and Kakashi headed to the men's side while Sakura waved and disappeared into the women's side, looking thrilled at the prospect of a peaceful soak.
Naruto had just leaned back in the warm water, eyes closed, when he heard a strange, muffled snickering nearby. He cracked one eye open to see a very familiar shock of white hair hunched over near the dividing wall, one eye peeking through a tiny hole.
"Oi…" Naruto blinked in disbelief. "Is that…?"
Sasuke's head shot up, his eyes narrowing sharply when he spotted Jiraiya clearly trying to peek. The usually calm Uchiha's face darkened, a dangerous glint in his eye as he slowly reached over, summoning his sword with unmistakable intent.
"He's peeking," Sasuke said, a cold fury in his voice. "And Sakura's on the other side." He was already up and stalking over, pure murder in his eyes, before Kakashi or Naruto could stop him.
Without a hint of hesitation, Sasuke drew his sword and pressed it right under Jiraiya's chin. Jiraiya froze, his usual swagger draining quickly as the point of Sasuke's blade brushed his throat.
"W-Wait! Hold on, this is just a little… uh, research, that's all!" Jiraiya stammered, trying to back away, but Sasuke's blade stayed firm.
"Research?" Sasuke hissed. "If you so much as look in Sakura's direction, I'll make sure this is the last bit of 'research' you ever do."
"Whoa, whoa, calm down!" Jiraiya raised his hands in a mock surrender. "I wasn't looking at Sakura—trust me, she's not even my type. I was only interested in the, uh… older ladies," he insisted, with a sheepish grin that quickly faltered under Sasuke's glare.
Naruto jumped up, grabbing onto Sasuke's arm. "Hey, don't kill him, Sasuke! He's an idiot, but he's still one of us!"
Kakashi, a hint of alarm on his face, grabbed Sasuke's other arm and finally managed to pull him back, though Sasuke was reluctant to lower his sword.
"Trust me, Sasuke," Kakashi said firmly, "I get it. But this isn't worth it. We'll handle this in a way that doesn't involve bloodshed… as tempting as it might be."
Sasuke reluctantly withdrew, though he gave Jiraiya a death glare that made it clear he wasn't letting this slide easily. Jiraiya, relieved but slightly trembling, rubbed his neck with a nervous chuckle. "Okay, okay… maybe I should have been a little more careful with my, uh, positioning," he admitted, glancing uneasily at Sasuke's sword.
Sasuke crossed his arms, still glaring, and Naruto gave him a teasing nudge. "Whoa, Sasuke. I didn't realize you'd get this worked up over Sakura! Should I be worried about you having a crush now?"
The tips of Sasuke's ears turned pink as he muttered, "I'm just looking out for my teammates."
"Oh, is that all?" Kakashi teased, a hint of amusement in his voice.
Sasuke turned a deeper shade of red, crossing his arms tightly. "Shut up."
Meanwhile, Jiraiya was about to slink away when Kakashi stepped in front of him, arms crossed and his usual relaxed demeanor gone. "Jiraiya," he began in a low, warning tone, "I don't care how legendary you are. If I ever see you near Sakura or my team with that excuse again, we're going to have a problem."
Jiraiya's smug grin faded as he caught the stern look in Kakashi's eye. "Loud and clear," he said quickly. "Strictly professional from here on out."
Satisfied, Kakashi relaxed, though he kept a wary eye on Jiraiya as he headed off to a safe distance. When Kakashi returned to the spring, Naruto smirked at Sasuke, muttering, "You know, for a second, I thought you were gonna actually take him down for good. 'All for Sakura-chan!'"
Sasuke huffed, pointedly ignoring him as he sank back into the water, though Naruto noted he looked a bit embarrassed. Naruto grinned, and Kakashi leaned back, letting his students bicker good-naturedly as they finally relaxed in the onsen.
On the other side, however, Jiraiya nursed a stinging pride and muttered to himself, "Who would've thought… Kakashi acting like some overprotective dad, and those boys ready to fight over that girl…"
