Chapter 71: The Legend and the Love
The sun was high as Team 7 and Jiraiya trekked along the winding path through the forest, their pace relaxed but steady. The initial excitement of the trip had simmered down, and now, in the quiet lull of travel, Naruto's curiosity got the better of him.
"Hey, Ero-Sennin," he said, glancing at Jiraiya's profile. "What's the big deal with this Tsunade anyway? You seem like you'd go to the ends of the earth just to find her."
Jiraiya chuckled, though there was something distant in his gaze. "Tsunade is… well, she's not just anybody. She's the best of the Legendary Three, like me and Orochimaru. But she's also one of the greatest healers the world's ever known. And if anyone can lead Konoha forward after what we've lost, it's her."
The sincerity in his tone caught the whole team's attention, especially Kakashi, who watched Jiraiya with a subtle curiosity. Sasuke's gaze lingered on him too, and even Sakura seemed intrigued.
"But that's not the only reason, is it?" Kakashi asked softly, reading between the lines.
Jiraiya stopped walking, and for a moment, he looked far older than his years. There was a vulnerability in his eyes as he looked out over the forest. "No, it's not."
After a pause, he continued, his voice softer than they'd ever heard. "Tsunade is someone I've known since we were kids. She's fierce and unstoppable, someone who could always stand her ground, even when things got rough. I guess… I've loved her for as long as I can remember."
Sakura's eyes softened as she listened, and even Sasuke found himself drawn in by the rare glimpse of Jiraiya's feelings. Naruto watched in silence, uncharacteristically respectful.
Jiraiya continued, his voice steady but pained. "She's lost a lot in her life. Her brother, her lover… people who meant the world to her. After that, she never let anyone in, and pushed everyone away, like losing them was a curse she couldn't bear again. But I couldn't let go. Even if she never felt the same for me, I'd do anything to protect her."
Naruto spoke up, a hint of wonder in his voice. "So you kept loving her, even if she never…?"
Jiraiya nodded, a gentle smile on his face. "Yes, even if she never felt the same way. Sometimes, that's what love is—caring for someone even when there's nothing to gain, just because you believe in who they are. I want her to come back because I know she'll be the best for the village. And if she finds a little bit of peace along the way, well… that's enough for me."
The raw honesty in Jiraiya's words seemed to resonate deeply with the team. Sakura felt her heart clench, Sasuke looked contemplative, and even Kakashi was silent, feeling a quiet respect for the man who'd been more complex than he ever realized.
Jiraiya exhaled, his usual playful tone returning, though his eyes still held a glimmer of that unspoken emotion. "Guess I got a little carried away there."
Naruto grinned, trying to lighten the mood. "Hey, if this Tsunade is so amazing, I'm looking forward to meeting her!"
Sakura nodded, her voice soft. "She sounds incredible. Maybe… maybe you're the only one who can bring her back, Jiraiya-sensei."
Jiraiya chuckled, the warmth in his gaze still there, directed not only at his memories of Tsunade but at the young shinobi before him. "Maybe so. We all have people worth fighting for, and when you do… well, it makes you stronger than you'd ever think."
As the group continued their journey, each of them carried Jiraiya's words with them. Though they walked as a team, something intangible had shifted between them, binding them closer as they made their way to find the woman who held Jiraiya's heart.
As the campfire crackled, the night deepened, casting flickering shadows across their small campsite. Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke had long since fallen asleep, each wrapped in their thoughts and exhaustion. Kakashi and Jiraiya sat nearby, watching over the sleeping genin in companionable silence.
Jiraiya glanced at Kakashi, his expression thoughtful. "They're a good team, those three. They remind me a lot of… well, us, back in the day."
Kakashi gave a slight nod, his eye softening as he looked over at them. "Yeah. They're strong, and resilient. But it's more than that—there's a bond there. One they'll fight to protect, even if they don't fully understand it yet."
Jiraiya chuckled, though his gaze was serious. "You're a good teacher, Kakashi. I can see how much you care about them. I think Minato would be proud."
Kakashi's visible eye lifted to meet Jiraiya's, surprised by the sentiment. "They're… something else. I thought it would be difficult to care about a team the way I cared about mine, but somehow, these three just… found a way in."
"You're doing more than just caring," Jiraiya said, his tone perceptive. "I've seen how they look at you, Kakashi. You're more than just their teacher—you're their anchor. Especially Naruto. I can see how much he admires you."
Kakashi's gaze softened. "Naruto's like him in so many ways. The same stubborn determination, the same fierce loyalty. He's got a spark in him. But he's also carrying a weight… and sometimes I worry if I'm enough to help him with it."
Jiraiya placed a reassuring hand on Kakashi's shoulder. "You've done well by him. And that's exactly why I want to step in now, too. Naruto has a path to walk that none of us can fully understand, but maybe I can guide him along it, as you've done so far."
Kakashi hesitated, his hand tightening on his knee as he glanced over at Naruto's sleeping form. "I want that for him. I want him to grow, to be prepared. But sending him away, even temporarily… it's hard, Jiraiya. They're still so young, and after all that's happened, they're even more tightly knit."
Jiraiya's gaze softened with understanding. "I get it, Kakashi. But I think taking them all together might just be the answer. They can grow as a team, and Naruto will have the strength of his friends by his side. With all of them, he'll learn faster than he would alone."
Kakashi sighed, nodding slowly. "You're right. They've always been stronger together. And Naruto's strength has always come from his bonds." He looked over at Jiraiya, his voice quiet. "But you'll be the one to take him down this path that I can't fully walk with him."
Jiraiya smiled, a glimmer of respect in his eyes. "I'm honoured. But know that, even if it's me training him, you're a part of that path too, Kakashi. Everything you've taught Naruto is something he'll carry with him."
Kakashi relaxed, the worry in his gaze easing as he looked over at his students, a faint smile playing on his lips. "They're my family, Jiraiya. I didn't expect that… but they are."
Jiraiya nodded. "Then let's make sure we give them every chance they deserve. Tomorrow's another day, and who knows what they'll accomplish."
With one last glance at his students, Kakashi felt a warm pride settle in his chest. He turned back to Jiraiya, the two of them sharing a quiet, knowing smile under the vast, starlit sky.
