Chapter 72: Shadows in the Leaf
The moon hung high in the night sky, casting an eerie glow over Konoha. The village streets lay quiet, an unusual peace settling over the rooftops and alleyways, but it was a silence with an edge—like the air before a storm. Beneath the calm, two shadowy figures moved with lethal precision through the village, their intent fixed and merciless.
Itachi Uchiha and Kisame Hoshigaki strode through the village with unwavering purpose, their cloaks billowing in the cool night air. The gleam in Kisame's eyes was feral, a predator's excitement at being unleashed. Beside him, Itachi's gaze was fixed and cold, his expression unreadable. He was focused on his objective: finding Naruto Uzumaki, the jinchūriki of the Nine-Tails.
As they reached the edge of the village's market district, two shinobi appeared to block their path—Kurenai Yuhi and Asuma Sarutobi, their faces determined, ready to defend Konoha at any cost.
"Itachi," Kurenai said, her voice a mixture of disbelief and warning. "We won't allow you to pass. Turn back now."
But Itachi only stared at her with his unreadable, crimson Sharingan. "My business here doesn't concern you," he said, his tone as calm as if they were discussing the weather. "Step aside, or face the consequences."
Asuma tightened his grip on his trench knives, his gaze shifting to Kisame, who was watching them with a gleeful grin. "Guess we've got no choice, Kurenai," Asuma said, his voice steady but tense. "Get ready."
Without warning, Kisame charged, his massive sword, Samehada, swinging in a wide arc toward Asuma, who barely had time to raise his knives in defense. The sheer force of the impact sent shockwaves through the ground, and Asuma gritted his teeth as he was forced back.
Kurenai's hands flashed through a series of signs, her eyes narrowing as she locked eyes with Itachi, activating her genjutsu. Instantly, the world around him transformed—a forest of red and black, shadows writhing like living things, closing in on Itachi. Kurenai tightened her focus, pouring her chakra into the illusion.
But Itachi's eyes flickered, and with a single wave of his hand, the genjutsu shattered. Kurenai staggered, her vision reeling from the recoil, and Itachi was upon her, faster than she could react. She barely managed to raise her kunai, blocking his strike, but the power behind it sent her skidding backward, the breath knocked from her lungs.
Meanwhile, Asuma and Kisame clashed in a brutal exchange, blades meeting with vicious force. Kisame's monstrous strength was overwhelming, and his swings left deep gouges in the ground with every miss. Asuma dodged and weaved, but Kisame's reach was relentless, and he felt his arms grow numb with each blow he deflected.
"Ha!" Kisame cackled, baring his sharp teeth in a feral grin. "You've got spirit, I'll give you that! But you're no match for me, little shinobi!"
Asuma panted, his muscles straining, but he grinned back defiantly. "Don't count me out just yet."
But Kisame raised his sword again, the chakra-hungry Samehada seeming to pulse with hunger. As he swung down, a gust of wind tore through the battlefield, and a green figure intercepted the blade with his own weapon—a pair of nunchaku.
"Gai!" Kurenai breathed, relief flooding her expression.
Gai didn't spare her a glance, his eyes locked on Kisame with intense focus. "Kurenai, Asuma… stand back. I'll handle this one."
Kisame's grin widened, his gaze lighting up with excitement. "Finally! A challenge!" He swung Samehada again, and Gai met it, their weapons colliding with a force that sent sparks flying. The two men squared off, their auras clashing like titans.
Kisame lunged, Samehada's scales stretching toward Gai like reaching claws, but Gai was faster. He ducked and sidestepped, his nunchaku spinning in tight arcs as he countered with precise strikes. Each time Samehada tried to siphon his chakra, Gai shifted his stance, moving fluidly around Kisame's attacks.
Meanwhile, Kurenai and Asuma turned to face Itachi, who had been watching the fight with detached interest. But as they regrouped, he shifted his gaze toward them, Sharingan flaring ominously.
Asuma gritted his teeth, lunging forward with a burst of chakra to close the gap. "I'll hold him off, Kurenai! You get behind and try to trap him!"
Kurenai nodded, weaving through the shadows to position herself. She could feel her heart pounding as she tried to remain unseen, her eyes fixed on Itachi's form as he moved to intercept Asuma's attack.
Itachi sidestepped smoothly, his hand a blur as he blocked Asuma's trench knives with a kunai. With a flick of his wrist, he disarmed Asuma, sending one of the knives clattering to the ground, and then struck out with a fierce palm strike to Asuma's chest. The impact sent Asuma reeling back, his breath stolen from him as he crashed to his knees.
Kurenai took her chance, striking out with a chakra-infused kunai aimed at Itachi's back. But as she moved, Itachi's eyes turned on her—locking her in place with the full power of his Sharingan. In an instant, she was trapped in his Tsukuyomi.
The world twisted, and she found herself bound, surrounded by endless mirrors reflecting her terrified expression back at her. She struggled, but every movement was met with searing pain. Itachi stood before her in this twisted realm, his voice cold and calm.
"Your efforts are wasted," he intoned. "Resistance only brings suffering."
In the real world, Kurenai collapsed, her body trembling as she struggled against the mental agony. Asuma, regaining his balance, moved to help her, his face twisted in anger as he glared at Itachi.
Meanwhile, Gai and Kisame's fight had reached a fever pitch. Gai had opened several gates, his muscles bulging with chakra, his speed and power now enough to meet Kisame head-on. They clashed repeatedly, the force of their strikes leaving cracks in the ground and ripples in the air. Kisame swung Samehada in a brutal arc, and Gai countered, delivering a powerful kick to Kisame's chest that sent the monstrous shinobi skidding backward.
"You're tough, I'll give you that!" Kisame snarled, wiping blood from his mouth with a grin. "But can you handle more?"
Gai's expression remained steely as he entered the Sixth Gate, his body radiating a fierce green aura. "I will not allow you to harm my comrades or my village. Prepare yourself!"
The battle raged, with Kisame and Gai pushing each other to their limits, each strike leaving both fighters bloodied and battered. But as the minutes passed, the toll of Gai's Eight Gates technique began to show, his breaths becoming labored, his muscles twitching from exertion. Still, he fought on, his determination unwavering.
Back in the alleyway, Kurenai had recovered, her eyes narrowing as she tried to flank Itachi from the side. But as she approached, Itachi's gaze turned her way, his Sharingan locking onto hers with a penetrating stare. Before she could break away, she was trapped in his Tsukuyomi.
A moment later, her body crumpled to the ground, her mind assaulted by visions and unbearable agony. In reality, she lay trembling, caught in the thrall of Itachi's mental torture, unable to free herself.
Asuma, torn between helping Kurenai and facing Itachi, hesitated. Itachi used the opening to plunge into Kurenai's mind, his Sharingan probing deeply, seeking a thread—any trace that would lead him to Naruto. Itachi searched her thoughts rapidly, sifting through her recent memories, until he encountered barriers guarding her knowledge of the village's jinchūriki.
The brief moment of distraction cost Asuma. He lunged at Itachi with full force, aiming to catch him off-guard, but Itachi evaded, his gaze flicking back toward the Leaf shinobi.
Kisame, meanwhile, was still locked in combat with Gai, exchanging blows with relentless force. Gai's movements grew faster, his resolve fiercer as he opened multiple gates to keep up. Kisame's face lit up with excitement, though a glimmer of irritation showed as Gai continued to evade and counter his attacks.
"You Leaf shinobi are tougher than I thought," Kisame admitted, grinning even as Gai's blow struck his shoulder. "But it won't be enough!"
The two clashed repeatedly, the battlefield cracking under the pressure of their attacks. Finally, Kisame leapt back, glancing toward Itachi, who had finished what he needed.
"It's time, Kisame," Itachi said in his usual calm tone, his expression unreadable.
Kisame hesitated, clearly unwilling to leave the fight, but he relented, hoisting Samehada over his shoulder. "Guess this is goodbye—for now."
Asuma staggered, barely holding himself up, and Gai took a defensive stance, watching as the two Akatsuki members retreated into the darkness.
After a moment's silence, Gai rushed to Kurenai's side, kneeling to check her condition. She was pale and shivering, her mind reeling from the effects of the Tsukuyomi. Asuma joined them, a look of worry crossing his face.
"We need to get her to the hospital," Asuma muttered, casting a wary glance in the direction Itachi and Kisame had vanished. "They didn't come here to fight us… They were after Naruto."
Gai nodded, his jaw tight. "They'll be back. But next time, we'll be ready."
Together, they helped Kurenai to her feet, and the battered shinobi made their way back to the village, knowing this encounter was only the beginning.
As the trio stumbled back toward the village, Asuma's mind raced. The gravity of the encounter left no doubt: Itachi and Kisame were hunting Naruto, and Team 7 was unknowingly walking into their path.
As they passed the threshold of the village's secure zone, Gai glanced at Asuma, his usual cheerful demeanor replaced by steely determination. "We have no time to lose," he said, his voice low and urgent. "If we're lucky, we can warn Team 7 before Itachi reaches them."
Asuma nodded, sweat dripping down his brow. "I'll send a message to Jiraiya and Team 7 immediately." He turned to one of the Anbu stationed nearby, giving swift, urgent instructions.
Within minutes, a sharp-beaked messenger bird was readied, a hastily scrawled message clamped in its talons:
"Urgent: Team 7 in danger. Akatsuki after Naruto. Itachi Uchiha is in pursuit. Return immediately or proceed with extreme caution."
The bird took off, darting into the night sky, disappearing into the distance toward Team 7's last known location. Asuma and Gai could only watch it go, silent prayers lingering in their minds.
"Let's get Kurenai to the hospital," Gai said finally, his eyes hardening. "After that… we need to prepare for what's coming. If they're after Naruto, they'll stop at nothing."
Asuma glanced back at the empty sky where the bird had vanished, hoping fervently that Team 7 would receive the message in time.
As Gai and Asuma helped Kurenai through the village gates, a solemn silence fell between them. The weight of what had just happened gnawed at their minds, each lost in worry for the young shinobi they were trying to protect.
"Those kids… they're strong, but they're still just kids," Gai murmured, his gaze dark with concern. "Naruto, Sakura, Sasuke… they're just beginning to understand what it means to be a shinobi, and now they're walking straight into danger."
Asuma clenched his fists, an uneasy sigh slipping from his lips. "Kakashi may be with them, but even he can't prepare them for what the Akatsuki are capable of. Itachi's relentless and Kisame's ruthless. They won't hold back."
Gai nodded, feeling a pang as he remembered his own students, especially Lee's determination to keep up with the others, pushing himself despite his limitations. "The Akatsuki aren't like any threat we've faced before. And Kakashi…" He paused, his voice softening. "Kakashi cares about those kids, more than he lets on. He may hide it well, but I know he'd give anything to keep them safe."
They both knew Kakashi's history—how he'd lost his friends and, in a way, even his family. Now, Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura had come into his life, filling spaces he'd long thought would stay empty. Though Kakashi seldom showed it, it was clear in the subtle glances, the quiet attentiveness, and the unspoken loyalty that bound him to his team.
"They mean the world to him," Asuma said, his voice barely a whisper. "And if anyone can protect them, it's Kakashi. But this—" He gestured back toward the darkened alley where they'd faced Itachi and Kisame. "This is more than any of us expected. We've seen the risks the Akatsuki are willing to take, and Kakashi doesn't even know they're coming."
A familiar figure approached, Anko, who had heard the news from a fellow shinobi. "Is it true? Itachi and Kisame—they're after Naruto?"
Asuma nodded grimly. "We've sent a messenger, but it's a gamble. Even if Kakashi sees it coming, they'll be outnumbered and outmatched if the Akatsuki find them first."
Anko paled, her hand covering her mouth. "They've become like family to him," she said, her voice trembling. "He won't let them come to harm, not if he can help it. But if anything happens…"
Gai set his jaw, eyes fierce. "We can only hope our warning reaches them in time. But if it doesn't, then we'll be ready to help them when the time comes. Those kids are our future, and I'll be damned if we lose them now."
As they continued to the hospital, their hearts weighed heavy with worry, knowing that no matter how much they prepared, their hopes rested on a simple message—and Kakashi's unspoken love for his team.
