Chapter 7: Magikarp and Gyarados
My dad always told me that, as a fisherman, life is like one big river and the experiences you have are like fish. You never know what you'll catch until you've actually caught it. He was a bit strange, my dad, but he always meant well. And it was me following in his footsteps that got me to where I am now. You see, I come from a family of Fishers that have run a very successful business of fishing for 30 years that was well known across the regions. What we did in the business was capture certain fish or other creatures (Editor's note: Yes, real fish and other sea creatures exist in the Pokémon world.) in rivers and oceans, which we then shipped off either to stores or restaurants across every region for people to eat. However, our hauls also sometimes had common Water-types that were considered delicacies such as Slowpoke tails, Basculin, Wishiwashi, Veluza and many others. It wasn't the most interesting of jobs, but it certainly paid well enough for me to have a nice home beside the river when I moved into the Kanto region. And it was this very job that allowed me to run into my girlfriend. I remember fondly the first time that we had met: It was a nice sunny day out, and I had set up a seine net in a river right by my house for a migrating group of whitefish to swim into so I could sell them off to some local stores. However, when I came back out after taking a break, something else had inadvertently swum into the net and was struggling to get free.
What was in the net was a female Magikarp.
You probably already know the kind of reputation that Magikarp had. It was described as "the most useless Pokémon to ever exist" and it was known to be lacking in terms of food, being nothing but scales and bones. However, due to an unknown phenomenon changing the whole Pokémon species into monster girls and guys, the Magikarp caught in my net was drastically different from how I remembered it looking. The Magikarp's upper half was completely human with a light skin complexion and medium-sized breasts while she was wearing a simple dress with a sash, but she had reddish-orange medium-length hair with sidelocks, white head fins with a reddish-orange outline in the place of ears that had long, white barbels hanging underneath, and her lower half consisted of a large reddish-orange fish tail with two pectoral fins on the sides near her waist and two yellow fins, one three-peaked and the other four-peaked, on the top and bottom near her tail fin. Call me crazy if you want, but she looked downright beautiful to me. Of course, our first meeting didn't really go that well, seeing as when I cut her free of the net, she angrily slapped me in the face with her tail fin and then swam off, leaving me hurt, lovestruck, and wondering if she would come back. Of course, when I talked to my friends about it as I was buying a new net, they told me that I should just forget about her and find a better taste in women since Magikarp was considered "too ordinary" and there was "nothing special about her". It was a pretty harsh insult, but I did understand where they were coming from given Magikarp's history with humans. However, all I could ever think about up until I went to bed was seeing that beautiful Magikarp again and I held onto the hope that I would see her again soon. As fate would have it, as I was setting up the nets the next day, the Magikarp showed up again and the both of us immediately struck up a conversation. The house I lived in also underwent some major changes, with some of the rooms having pools to allow Maggie to swim in at her leisure so we could spend time together with a big door in the living room that led into the river. "Well, I've told her about you every now and then while I visited her and she's very eager to meet you. Mostly because she never thought anyone could fall in love with a Magikarp and she wants to know why you fell in love with me," Maggie explained, prompting me to smile as I caressed her cheek.
"Isn't the reason why I love you obvious enough? It's because you're beautiful to me, inside and out, you have the sweetest personality, and you're a huge help to me. I know a lot of people say that you're just ordinary, but to me, you're astonishing," I said, causing Maggie to blush as red as her tail.

"Definitely those rice balls with the nori! She absolutely LOVES seaweed and rice, so having the two together will absolutely blow her mind! Other than that, feel free to cook whatever you want! I'll see you tonight!" Maggie said before she exited the room and she swam downstream toward the ocean as I waved at her through the window. After she was gone, I couldn't help but beam at how lucky I was to have such a beautiful and loving girlfriend like Maggie. However, I couldn't be thinking long about such wonderful thoughts as I needed to get started on dinner, so I got down to business and went right to the store to grab the supplies I needed and then came back home and started cooking away like crazy. Through my time spent with Maggie, I had learned that Magikarps aren't known to picky eaters, so aside from the rice balls, I also made some smoked-tail curry, Klawf legs and pan-seared Veluza fillets from Paldea, and some Poké Puffs for dessert, while I also set the table so everything was ready. I managed to do all of this within the span of an hour just so everything would be nice and hot by the time Maggie got back with Azura. As I was finishing up, I suddenly heard a familiar voice from behind.
"Um... Ollie?" Maggie's voice said, prompting me to turn and face her. She was peeking in through the curtain in the main room that led outside with a worried look on her face, which should've been a sign that something was up, but I was too happy to see Maggie to notice at first.
"Maggie, you're back! So, how did things go?" I asked.
"Um... things went swimmingly..." Maggie replied sheepishly as she twiddled her fingers together.
"What's wrong? Did Azura change her mind about coming?" I asked as I waded into the water to meet her.
"N-no! Nothing like that! She's here... it's just that..." Maggie started to say.
"Well, why are you just leaving her outside? She was anxious to meet me, so introduce me already!" I said as I prepared to open the curtain.
"WAIT! Don't go out there yet! She's... uh..." Maggie stammered as I pulled the curtain back and stepped out while I kept my eyes on her for the moment.
"I'm sure she's waited long enough to meet me. Azura, it's a pleasure to have..." I started to say. And that's when I saw her. I felt my heart lodge up into my throat as I suddenly lost my voice, my whole face went pale, and my eyes widened with fear. I broke out into a cold sweat and my knees started to shake a little as Azura towered over me with a menacing presence that most Fishers knew all too well. One of chaos and destruction that could destroy entire villages at will to no end.
Azura... was a Gyarados.
Anybody can tell you of just how destructive a single Gyarados could be. It had fangs that could crush stones and scales harder than steel with a vicious temperament to boot. And now, there was one towering over me and staring down at me with its vicious red eyes. Azura's upper half was human-like just as with Maggie, but her skin was blue, she had long dark blue hair that went past her waist, a set of gills on both sides of her body, yellow lips with her top pointed teeth poking out from behind her upper lip, a three-pointed, dark blue crest on her head, two long, white barbels hanging off her cheeks, and small white fins in the place of her ears, while her lower half was the long, blue serpentine body, covered in slightly overlapping scales which had four dorsal fins on her butt and near the base of her powerful tail fin, that many people had feared throughout history. All those fearful features aside, Azura's feminine features were also a sight to behold. Maggie said rapidly as she laughed off Azura's remark until we were behind the curtain. Now that I was out of Azura's sight, I finally gained the courage to speak again.
"Maggie… what is going on? You never told me that your sister was a Gyarados!" I said.
"That's because she wasn't when I last saw her! I'm just as confused as you are! When I went out to the section of ocean where she lived, there was a bunch of wrecked ships and, next thing I know, there she is as a Gyarados! What made her evolve and how, I don't have a clue! I swear I didn't plan on this being a problem!" Maggie complained before I put my hands on the sides of her face to get her to calm her down.
"OK, OK, whoa… I'm not upset at you or anything, Mags. It's just that this is all a big shock to me, that's all. Look, let's just take this nice and calm and enjoy ourselves tonight, OK?" I calmly said.
"…OK…" Maggie replied softly before Azura suddenly peeked her head in through the curtain.
"You guys are really loud, you know that?" she said.
"Well, this is just all a big shock to us, what with your evolution and all. But that doesn't matter right now. You must be hungry after traveling all the way here, so why don't you have a seat and eat with us? We have fresh Klawf legs from Paldea, smoked-tail curry…" I said meekly. Azura just stared at me gruffly before she squeezed her way into the house and laid beside the table while Maggie sat beside her and I sat on the other side. Before I could tell Azura to enjoy the meal, her hand darted in and grabbed a Klawf leg before she bit into it and ate the whole thing, leaving me and Maggie stunned for a moment until we decided to dig in ourselves. As I started eating some of the smoked-tail curry and Maggie started nibbling away at on of the rice balls, Azura grabbed another Klawf leg and tore it up while she grabbed a plate of smoked-tail curry and immediately went for the tail part. I will say that, despite her barbaric way of eating, Azura did seem to be enjoying the meal I prepared, but the tension was still pretty high, so I had to do something to lower it.
"So… Azura. If you don't mind my asking, what exactly was it that triggered your evolution?" I asked, prompting both sisters to look at me (although Maggie was the one looking at me like that was the wrong thing to ask).
"Eh, you know, the same ol' shit… just some dumbass teenagers on spring break who didn't know who they were fucking with. They chucked things at me and called me names until I evolved and Outrage'd their boat to pieces. On top of that, one of them sent their Clawitzer out to fight me and I ended up taking their claw instead. And that's how I got this pauldron. It actually looks pretty good on me if I do say so myself," Azura explained as my face went pale.
"You… killed a Clawitzer?" I asked.
"No, I just took their claw. I ALMOST killed them but once I took off their claw, they just ran the fuck away back to their master and the whole group just hightailed it out of my home and that was the end of it," Azura replied, prompting me and Maggie to breathe a sigh of relief.
"Thank goodness," Maggie said before she suddenly covered her mouth while her sister turned and angrily stared at her.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Azura snarled.
"I-I just meant it's good that they got out OK! Wh-what they did to you was wrong but I'm just glad that you didn't kill anyone! I'd hate it if you had ended up killing anyone!" Maggie stammered.
"Yeah... sure. Anyway, enough about me. How exactly did you two end up living together?"
"Well, that's actually kind of a funny story. See, I usually did fishing around here and, one day, Maggie accidentally swam into one of my nets and I had to cut her loose. Our first encounter... didn't really end that well..." I started to explain before Maggie chimed in.
"I-I didn't mean to tail slap you! I was just so frustrated from being tangled in the net that I acted without thinking! But, either way, I felt so bad about slapping Ollie that I went and found him the next day to apologize to him and... we found out that we had so much in common and we just hit it off. I found myself repeatedly coming back to him day after day until he finally confessed his love for me and… I felt so happy. He really saw me for who I was instead of just judging me on the outside. So, I decided to move in with him for good and we became lovers. And… I've never felt happier," Maggie explained as she blushed before I reached across the table and took her hand.
"Nor have I. Everyday is a blessing, being with someone as beautiful as Maggie," I added as Maggie giggled in response and gave me one of her sweet smiles.
"…You're joking, right?" Azura asked, prompting me and Maggie to look at her in offense.
"What's that supposed to mean?!" Maggie asked.
"I mean… what exactly is it about my sister that stands out to you?" Azura asked me.
"Well, where do I start? Her absolutely adorable face, her beautiful orange scales, her cheerful personality… I could keep going if you'd like," I responded as Maggie went back to blushing and smiling while Azura just stared at me in bewilderment.

"Wha... NO! Why is it so hard for you to believe that Oliver and I are lovers?!" Maggie shrieked.
"Seriously? Years upon years of slander and abuse against the Magikarp race isn't enough of a clue? I mean, Magikarps have always been (and please don't hate me for saying this) labelled as 'completely fucking useless' in the past and after we turned into... this... they've been called 'ordinary' and 'unattractive'! So how is it that this guy finds you attractive?" Azura asked.
"Well, with me, I see the person on the inside more than the outside. Maggie might not look that appealing on the outside to most people, but she's a wonderful person on the inside. Plus, being a Fisher, I see the beauty in most things even if they don't look appealing. Besides, judging from your tone, it sounds to me like you're actually jealous of your sister, if anything," I said, causing Azura to blush madly in response as she crossed her arms and tried to look tough.
"What? No… Shut up. Fuck you," she said, trying to hide her blushing from me and her sister.
"Azura, are you blushing?" Maggie giggled as Azura took her plate of curry, held it up to her face, and started rapidly eating it to hide how red her face was.
"No, I'm just… thinking about those punks and how rude they were and it's making me upset…" Azura replied, failing to convince us that she was actually blushing.
"...Well, you know, if you're feeling agitated, Maggie and I know this nice, quiet spot just up the river that I think you'll find very relaxing," I said before I noticed that Maggie was looking at me with a concerned look on her face until she motioned for us to meet outside, which we did immediately.
"Ollie, what is it that you're trying to do?" Maggie asked.
"What do you mean?" I replied.
"If I didn't know any better, I'd say that you were flirting with my sister back there!"
"Wha… no! I was just trying to lighten the mood! That's all! Besides, she looks like she's really stressed out and needs a bit of relaxation to soothe her nerves. I swear that I wasn't flirting!" I said.
"Well, all right then... But, what exactly were you planning to do when we got to our secret spot, aside from relaxing?" Maggie asked.
"...I'm not sure. I mean, we could try and have a conversation, but I'm not sure what else we can do aside from that..." I said before Azura suddenly burst out of my home in a fit of rage for no apparent reason, scaring the daylights out of me and Maggie.
"WHO THE HELL IS HITTING MY TAIL OUT HERE?!" she roared before me and Maggie looked toward the rest of her enormous tail, which was out in the middle of the river in everyone's way.
