CHAPTER 15
The team neared the rogue mercenary hideout. The crumbling fortress, hidden deep within the woods, was fortified yet weathered, its stone walls covered in moss and ivy. Shadows stretched long across the ground, and the air carried the heavy stillness that often preceded battle.
Sasuke led the group with purposeful strides, his sharp gaze scanning the surroundings. Behind him, Hinata activated her Byakugan, her lavender eyes glowing faintly as she surveyed the area. Naruto and Sakura trailed behind, their usual banter replaced with quiet focus.
Hinata's voice broke the silence. "There are at least twenty mercenaries. Fifteen are patrolling outside, spread across the perimeter. Five are stationed inside, and three of those are guarding the trapdoor to an underground chamber."
Naruto let out a low whistle, cracking his knuckles. "Twenty, huh? Finally, a decent challenge!"
Sakura gave him a sidelong glance, her expression unimpressed. "Just try not to blow anything up before we've cleared the perimeter."
Sasuke ignored their exchange, his tone sharp as he addressed the group. "Naruto, Sakura—you'll take the south. Draw their attention. Keep them focused on you, but don't let them regroup. Hinata and I will approach from the north and breach the fortress."
"Got it!" Naruto said with a grin, his energy already building.
Sakura adjusted her gloves, her eyes narrowing. "Understood."
Hinata nodded, her voice steady. "Ready."
Sasuke gave her a brief glance, then turned back to the path ahead. "Let's move."
Naruto and Sakura approached the southern perimeter, where a cluster of ten mercenaries patrolled in pairs. The flicker of torchlight illuminated their weapons, and their voices carried faintly through the night air.
Naruto crouched low beside Sakura, his grin unwavering. "Alright, Sakura-chan, let's show them how it's done!"
Sakura smirked, cracking her knuckles. "Just don't overdo it, Naruto. We don't want to bring the whole fortress down before Sasuke and Hinata finish their part."
Naruto waved her off, forming a quick hand sign. "Relax. I've got this."
In an instant, a dozen shadow clones appeared, spreading out silently across the area. The mercenaries didn't even see it coming. One by one, the clones attacked from the shadows, subduing their targets with well-placed strikes.
"Ambush!" one mercenary shouted, his voice cutting through the night.
The remaining guards scrambled into defensive positions, but it was already too late. Sakura darted forward, her movements precise as she delivered a devastating punch to the ground, sending a shockwave through the area. Several mercenaries were thrown off their feet, their weapons clattering uselessly to the ground.
"Is that all you've got?" Naruto taunted, forming a Rasengan in his palm. He charged forward, his attack slamming into another group of enemies with pinpoint accuracy.
One mercenary, braver than the others, lunged at Sakura with a blade. She sidestepped effortlessly, her fist connecting with his chest in a single, powerful strike. He crumpled to the ground, unconscious.
"Focus, Naruto," Sakura called over her shoulder as she dispatched another opponent. "We need to keep this area secure!"
Naruto laughed, dodging an incoming kunai before countering with a spinning kick that sent the attacker flying. "I'm focused! This is just too easy."
Despite his playful tone, their movements were seamless. Naruto's clones continued to overwhelm the remaining mercenaries, while Sakura's precise strikes ensured no one got close to the fortress.
By the time the dust settled, the southern perimeter was cleared, the unconscious mercenaries scattered across the ground.
Naruto wiped the back of his hand across his forehead, grinning. "Told you we had this!"
Sakura rolled her eyes, but a small smile tugged at her lips. "Let's regroup with Sasuke and Hinata. They should be finishing up inside by now."
On the northern side of the fortress, Hinata moved quietly alongside Sasuke, her Byakugan scanning the area with practiced focus. The patrols here were tighter, with smaller groups covering overlapping routes.
"There are four up ahead," Hinata whispered, her voice steady. "Two are positioned near the gate. The other two are patrolling the perimeter."
Sasuke gave a small nod, his katana gleaming faintly in the dim light. "Take the two near the gate. I'll handle the others."
Hinata's pulse quickened, but her movements remained fluid as she approached the first pair of guards. Chakra flared faintly around her hands, and with a swift burst of speed, she struck the first mercenary with a precise Gentle Fist blow to his chest. The man staggered back, his chakra points disrupted before he could cry out.
The second guard turned toward her, his weapon raised, but Hinata ducked under his swing. Her next strike landed cleanly, sending him collapsing to the ground.
Sasuke, meanwhile, dispatched the remaining patrols with ruthless efficiency. His katana cut through the air in sharp, decisive arcs, leaving the mercenaries incapacitated before they even realized what had happened.
"Clear," Sasuke said quietly, motioning for Hinata to follow.
They reached the northern gate quickly, their movements synchronized as they breached the entrance. Inside, the fortress was dark and damp, the air heavy with the smell of mildew.
"There are five remaining," Hinata murmured, her Byakugan scanning the interior. "Two are stationed in the main hall. Three are guarding the underground chamber."
Sasuke nodded, his expression unreadable. "We'll clear the main hall first. Keep an eye out for reinforcements."
"Yes, Sasuke-san," Hinata replied, her voice steady despite the tension building in her chest.
The two mercenaries in the main hall stood near a table covered in stolen goods—scrolls, weapons, and bags of coin. They didn't notice Sasuke and Hinata's approach until it was too late.
Sasuke struck first, his katana cutting through the air with lethal precision. The first mercenary fell instantly, his weapon clattering to the floor.
The second mercenary turned with a shout, drawing his blade as he lunged toward Hinata. She sidestepped smoothly, her chakra-infused strike landing on his arm and disarming him in one motion. Her next blow hit his chest, and he crumpled to the ground.
"Efficient as always," Sasuke commented, his dark eyes flicking to her briefly before motioning toward the trapdoor.
Hinata's cheeks warmed slightly, but she quickly focused on scanning the area ahead.
They continued deeper into the fortress, the air growing colder as they approached the underground chamber. The remaining three mercenaries were stationed in front of the trapdoor, their stances tense as they prepared for an attack. One of them, larger and more muscular than the others, barked orders to his subordinates.
"You're not getting past us!" he snarled, forming a series of hand seals.
Flames erupted from his palms, spreading toward Sasuke and Hinata in a wall of fire.
"Stay behind me," Sasuke ordered, forming his Chidori. Lightning crackled around him as he sent a surge of electricity through the air, colliding with the flames and dissipating them in a burst of smoke and sparks.
The distraction gave Hinata an opening. She darted forward, her Gentle Fist technique disrupting the chakra flow of one mercenary and rendering him unconscious.
The larger mercenary growled in frustration, lunging toward her with a heavy blade. Hinata's Byakugan allowed her to dodge narrowly, but the force of his swing threw her off balance.
"Hinata!" Sasuke's voice cut through the chaos as he appeared beside her, parrying the mercenary's attack with his katana.
His presence steadied her, and together they pressed forward. Hinata activated her Eight Trigrams Palm Rotation, the spinning chakra shield deflecting another wave of attacks. Sasuke moved with deadly precision, his katana finding its mark as he incapacitated the final guard.
"It's over," Sasuke said coldly, his blade hovering near the last mercenary's throat.
The man glared up at him but fell limp as the fight drained out of him.
Hinata exhaled, her chakra steadying as she straightened. "The area is clear."
Sasuke nodded, his gaze lingering on her for a moment longer than necessary before he turned away. "Good work."
Naruto and Sakura arrived as Sasuke and Hinata finished securing the supplies in the underground chamber.
"Oi, Sasuke! Hinata! You guys okay?" Naruto called, his grin wide as he surveyed the unconscious mercenaries. He let out a low whistle. "Looks like you two handled things just fine. Nice work, Hinata!"
"You were late," Sasuke replied flatly, earning a laugh from Naruto.
"Thank you, Naruto-kun," Hinata said softly.
Sakura folded her arms, her gaze sweeping the room while nodding in approval. "You handled this well, Hinata. Your Byakugan really is invaluable."
Hinata bowed her head slightly. "Thank you, Sakura-chan."
"She did more than that," Sasuke added suddenly, his voice calm but deliberate.
Naruto blinked in surprise, his grin widening. "Whoa, was that a compliment, Sasuke? Who are you and what have you done with the real Sasuke?"
"Shut up, Naruto," Sasuke said, his tone sharp but lacking real bite.
Naruto laughed, turning to Sakura. "See? I told you he's going soft."
Sakura rolled her eyes. "Leave him alone, Naruto."
Hinata glanced at Sasuke, her face flushing faintly. His words had been subtle, but they were enough to make her heart flutter.
With the fortress cleared and the supplies accounted for, the team set up camp outside for the night. The small clearing they chose was quiet, surrounded by tall trees that rustled softly in the breeze.
Naruto and Sakura bickered over the tents while Hinata carefully tended to the fire. Sasuke sat a short distance away, his gaze fixed on the horizon as he lost himself in thought.
Hinata's soft humming drew his attention. He glanced at her, watching the way the firelight played across her features, illuminating her calm expression.
There was something about her—something steady and unshakable that he couldn't ignore.
When she caught him looking, Hinata's cheeks warmed slightly, but she managed a small smile.
"Go to sleep," Sasuke said quietly, his voice softer than usual.
Hinata nodded. "Goodnight, Sasuke-san."
As she settled onto her mat, Sasuke turned his gaze back to the horizon, his thoughts swirling. No matter how much he tried to dismiss it, he couldn't deny the pull she had on him—quiet, but undeniably present.
The return journey to Konoha began under the soft light of dawn, the morning mist clinging to the forest like a lingering memory. Sasuke walked near the front of the group, his steps deliberate, his sharp gaze scanning the terrain ahead. Naruto and Sakura were a few paces ahead, their chatter a constant hum that filled the silence. Behind him, Hinata's presence was quiet yet noticeable, her footsteps light against the forest path.
He had been trying—and failing—to ignore her presence. For reasons he couldn't quite explain, his awareness of her had sharpened over the past few days. It wasn't just her abilities, though he'd found himself grudgingly impressed by her precision in battle. It was something more subtle. The way her focus never wavered. The calm she exuded even in the face of chaos.
And, annoyingly, the faint scent of lavender that seemed to follow her.
"There's a small group of merchants passing a quarter mile to the west," her voice broke through his thoughts, calm and composed. "Otherwise, the path is clear."
"Good," Sasuke replied curtly. "Let's pick up the pace."
Naruto turned around with a grin, his usual energy undeterred. "What's the rush, Sasuke? Afraid we'll beat you back to Konoha?"
Sasuke shot him a glare, his tone clipped. "You're slowing us down."
Naruto groaned dramatically. "Geez, you're always such a drag."
Sakura sighed, though her smile betrayed her amusement. "Naruto, just keep walking."
Sasuke's attention shifted back to the path, but his thoughts betrayed his focus. Hinata's quiet efficiency had been a constant during the mission, but it was the moments outside of battle that stayed with him. Like the way her expresssion softened when she talks. Or the way her gaze lingered on him—not judging, not accusing, just… observing.
Why does she look at me like that?
By midday, the team stopped in a small clearing for a brief rest. Naruto flopped down under a tree, spreading his arms wide. "Finally! I thought my legs were gonna fall off."
Sakura shook her head, sitting down more gracefully. "You're hopeless, Naruto."
Sasuke stood near the edge of the clearing, his posture alert. Hinata knelt by a small stream nearby, refilling her canteen. He let his gaze drift to her briefly, noting the quiet focus in her movements. Her hair fell over her shoulder as she leaned forward, catching the light filtering through the trees.
He turned his attention back to the forest, annoyed with himself. Why do I keep noticing these things?
A sudden crack echoed through the clearing, snapping him to full attention. His hand went to the hilt of his katana as he scanned the surroundings. Hinata's Byakugan activated instantly, the veins around her eyes flaring.
"There's something moving… fast," she said, her tone urgent. "Six targets approaching from the north."
Naruto jumped to his feet, already on alert. "More enemies?"
"Looks like mercenaries," Sasuke said tersely. "They must have followed us from the fortress."
The forest erupted as six masked figures burst into the clearing, kunai drawn. Sasuke moved first, intercepting the closest enemy with a swift strike of his katana. Steel met steel, sparks flying as he pushed the attacker back.
"Naruto, take the three on the left! Sakura, back him up!" Sasuke ordered, his voice sharp.
"On it!" Naruto shouted, forming a Rasengan as he charged forward.
Sakura followed, landing a powerful punch that sent one mercenary flying into a tree. Hinata moved toward another enemy, her stance shifting fluidly into the Gentle Fist.
"Eight Trigrams, Sixty-Four Palms!"
Her strikes landed with precision, disrupting the mercenary's chakra points until he crumpled to the ground. Sasuke dispatched another enemy with a clean, calculated strike before turning to check the others.
A flicker of movement caught Sasuke's eye—a mercenary forming a series of hand seals, aiming a jutsu directly at Hinata. His body moved instinctively, faster than thought.
"Hinata, move!" he barked, but she didn't have time to react. Sasuke darted in front of her just as a bolt of lightning chakra burst toward her. The jutsu struck him square in the shoulder, sending a crackling shock through his body.
"Sasuke-san!" Hinata's voice rose in alarm as he staggered back a step, his hand clutching his shoulder.
The mercenary didn't get a chance for a follow-up. With a sharp glare, Sasuke unleashed a burst of Chidori, the electric current arcing through the air as it struck his opponent with deadly precision. The clearing fell silent once more, save for the soft rustling of leaves.
Hinata hurried to his side, her Byakugan deactivating as she took in the scorched fabric and the wound beneath. "You're hurt," she said, her voice edged with worry as she reached for her medical pouch.
"It's nothing," Sasuke muttered, brushing her hand aside. "Just a scratch."
She tried to examine his shoulder but he shifted slightly, making it difficult for her to get a proper look.
Naruto and Sakura approached, their chatter silencing as they noticed the tension. "What's going on?" Naruto asked, blinking between the two of them.
"Hinata-chan's just worried, right?" Sakura added, watching as Hinata tried to maneuver around Sasuke's stubbornness.
"Sasuke-san," Hinata said, her voice firmer now, "hold still. I need to check the injury."
"I told you, it's nothing," he replied, his tone clipped, refusing to budge.
Hinata's lavender eyes narrowed in exasperation. Without warning, she raised her hand and smacked him on the back of the head. "It's not nothing!" she said, her voice a mix of scolding and concern.
Naruto and Sakura froze, their jaws dropping in unison. "Did she just—" Naruto began, pointing at the scene.
Even Sasuke seemed momentarily stunned, his dark eyes snapping to her face. His hand hovered at the back of his head as if considering whether to argue or simply react to the audacity of her action.
"Now, stay still," Hinata said, her voice softening but her resolve unwavering. She gently but firmly guided him to sit on a nearby rock, her hands already moving to inspect and clean the wound. "You're part of a team, Sasuke-san. Let us help you."
Still taken aback, Sasuke complied without another word, his gaze briefly flicking toward her as she worked. Naruto and Sakura exchanged incredulous glances but said nothing, deciding it was wiser not to intervene.
"You didn't need to shield me. I could have handled it."
Sasuke glanced at her, his dark eyes narrowing. "You didn't see it coming."
"That doesn't mean I couldn't defend myself," Hinata countered, her voice soft but firm. She pulled out a roll of bandages despite his protest, her hands moving with precision as she worked on the injury. "You shouldn't put yourself at risk like that. We're a team, Sasuke-san. Trust me to do my part."
Sasuke's jaw tightened, but he didn't push her away this time. Her words lingered as she worked, her gentle touch contrasting with the steel in her tone. He wasn't used to being chastised, especially not by someone like her. Yet, there was no anger in her voice—just genuine concern.
By the time she finished binding his injury, Hinata's calm demeanor had returned. "There," she said softly, stepping back. "Next time, don't underestimate me and don't be so stubborn."
Sasuke didn't reply immediately, but a faint smirk tugged at the corner of his lips as he stood. "You've got a strong arm," he muttered, more to himself than to her, before turning to rejoin the group.
Naruto finally found his voice, nudging Sakura. "Did that just happen? Hinata smacked him!"
Sakura shook her head in disbelief. "I don't know what's more surprising—that she did it or that he actually listened."
Hinata, her cheeks faintly flushed, followed Sasuke quietly, though she couldn't help but notice the slight glance he gave her as they walked. If he was upset, he didn't show it, but his silence seemed… less cold.
As the group continued on, Naruto and Sakura fell into step ahead again, discussing the ambush animatedly. Hinata walked quietly behind them, her mind still replaying the moment when Sasuke had shielded her from the jutsu.
He didn't hesitate.
Her heart fluttered at the thought, her cheeks warming faintly. She pressed a hand lightly to her chest, trying to steady herself. Why did he do that? Her inner thoughts threatened to spiral, and she could feel her fangirl instincts bubbling dangerously close to the surface.
Beside her, Sasuke walked in silence, his gaze fixed forward. But his thoughts were anything but calm.
Why did I move so quickly?
The moment he saw the attack aimed at her, his body had acted on its own. Protecting her had felt natural—immediate. And it annoyed him more than the ache in his shoulder.
His hand brushed the bandage Hinata had applied, her earlier scolding still ringing in his ears. He wasn't used to anyone speaking to him like that—let alone her. Yet, her voice hadn't been harsh or angry. It had been filled with genuine concern, a mix of frustration and care that he wasn't sure how to process.
And then, there was the other incident. He couldn't help but recall the night she had dismantled the pillow divider in her sleep and wandered onto his side of the futon. The memory of her light punches on his chest, as though he were a pillow, flashed in his mind. The absurdity of it made his lips twitch faintly with amusement.
She has no idea, does she? he thought, shaking his head slightly. The memory wasn't irritating—it was… amusing. Strangely so.
He glanced at her briefly, his eyes narrowing as he noticed the faint flush on her cheeks and the way she clutched her chest. "You're not injured, are you?"
Hinata startled, looking up quickly. "N-No, I'm fine, Sasuke-san," she said, her voice soft but steady.
He frowned slightly, his gaze lingering on her for a moment before turning back to the path. "Good."
The silence between them stretched, but the tension in Sasuke's chest refused to fade. His mind replayed the moments she had surprised him—the bold smack to his head, the way she scolded him without hesitation, and now, her oblivious sleep habits. It was all starting to paint a picture of someone who was far more complex than he had first assumed.
What's wrong with me?
He couldn't explain why her safety had mattered so much, or why her presence seemed to linger in his thoughts.
But one thing was becoming clear: Hinata Hyuuga was starting to get under his skin.
The team reached the gates of Konoha by late afternoon.
Tsunade listened intently as Naruto and Sakura reported the details of the mission, her sharp gaze flicking between the four shinobi.
"Good work," she said finally, leaning back in her chair. "It's rare for rogue groups to organize that effectively. It seems you handled it well."
"Of course, we did!" Naruto said proudly, grinning ear to ear. "Teamwork, Baachan. We're unstoppable."
Tsunade rolled her eyes. "Spare me the bragging, Naruto."
Her attention shifted to Sasuke and Hinata, both of whom stood quietly at the back. Her sharp eyes narrowed slightly as she noticed the faint tension in Sasuke's posture and the bandages peeking out from beneath his shirt.
"And you two," she said, her tone firm. "It seems you worked well together." She paused, her gaze settling on Sasuke's shoulder. "Though it looks like someone didn't walk away unscathed."
Sasuke gave a curt nod, brushing off her concern. "It's nothing."
Hinata stiffened slightly but quickly inclined her head. "Thank you, Hokage-sama."
Tsunade smirked faintly, though her gaze lingered on Sasuke for another moment. "Hn. Let Shizune take a look at that before you leave," she said firmly, her tone leaving no room for argument.
Sasuke's expression remained stoic as he gave a curt nod. "There's no need for that. Hinata already took care of it."
Tsunade raised an eyebrow, her smirk widening slightly as she shifted her gaze to Hinata. "Is that so?" Her tone was light, but the glint in her eye suggested amusement.
Hinata blinked, surprised by the unexpected acknowledgment.
Satisfied, Tsunade leaned back in her chair. "You're dismissed. Take the next day to recover—you've earned it."
Naruto cheered loudly, earning a groan from Sakura as the team exited the office. "Man, I'm starving! Let's hit Ichiraku Ramen!"
Sakura sighed but smiled faintly. "Honestly, is that all you think about?"
"Come on, Sakura-chan! I'll treat you!" Naruto insisted, his usual cheer undeterred.
He paused, glancing back at Sasuke and Hinata, who were trailing slightly behind. "You guys coming?"
Sasuke shook his head. "I'm not interested."
"I'll pass," Hinata added quietly.
Naruto stopped, turning to look at both of them with narrowed eyes. Then his expression lit up with a sly grin. "Fine, fine, you two lovebirds probably have other plans, huh?"
Hinata froze, her face instantly warming. "What? We don't—"
Sasuke cut her off with a sharp glare at Naruto. "Keep walking."
Naruto laughed, holding his hands up in mock surrender. "Hey, no need to get all grumpy about it, Sasuke! I'm just saying—maybe some fresh air would do you two some good."
"Naruto!" Sakura smacked his arm, pulling him along by the wrist. "Stop teasing them and let's go."
Naruto rubbed his arm, grinning over his shoulder. "I'm just saying! Hinata-chan, let me know if he's being a jerk, okay?"
Sakura sighed, dragging Naruto toward the village center, their bickering fading into the distance. Sasuke and Hinata stood in silence for a moment, the silence settling around them.
Hinata fiddled with her hands, her face still faintly flushed. "Naruto-kun… he doesn't mean anything by it," she said softly, though her voice was tinged with embarrassment.
Sasuke huffed faintly, his expression neutral. "He's an idiot. Ignore him."
She nodded softly, though her face still burned from Naruto's teasing. Silence stretched between them for a moment before Sasuke began walking toward the village outskirts.
Hinata hesitated briefly before following. "Sasuke-san…"
"What?" he asked, his voice even.
She glanced at him, her steps measured. "Thank you for… earlier. For protecting me."
Sasuke's expression didn't change, but he didn't dismiss her words either. "You don't need to thank me."
Hinata's gaze fell to the ground, a small smile playing at her lips. "Still… it meant a lot."
Sasuke didn't respond, his eyes fixed forward as they walked. He couldn't explain it—not to her, not even to himself. Pulling her out of danger had been instinctual, but it had also been something more.
Why do I keep noticing her?
The thought irritated him. He had always been in control—of his mind, his actions, his priorities. But when it came to Hinata, things felt… unbalanced.
And he didn't like it.
When they reached the village's quieter outskirts, Sasuke stopped abruptly. "This is as far as I'm going."
Hinata turned to him, her lavender eyes soft. "Alright. Have a good evening, Sasuke-san."
He nodded once and turned to leave, disappearing down a path leading toward the Uchiha compound.
Hinata watched him go, her heart thudding softly in her chest. She had spent so long quieting the echoes of her past feelings—feelings that weren't truly hers—but now, everything felt clearer.
When Sasuke moved to protect her, when his voice broke through the chaos, when he looked at her—not past her—her heart responded.
It wasn't borrowed. It wasn't leftover.
It was real.
She pressed her palm gently against her chest, feeling the soft, steady rhythm beneath.
This is mine, she thought. My feelings.
The realization brought a faint smile to her lips, though it was tinged with nervousness. Sasuke was still Sasuke—aloof, guarded, and distant. Whatever she was starting to feel, it was hers to carry quietly for now.
With a small sigh, Hinata turned toward the Hyuuga compound, her thoughts still lingering on him and the growing shift between them.
Meanwhile, at the Uchiha compound, Sasuke stood outside, staring up at the darkening sky. The silence of his home surrounded him, but his thoughts were loud—much louder than usual.
Hinata.
She had been calm, capable, and strong on the mission. Her quiet strength had been impossible to ignore, and no matter how much he tried to dismiss it, he couldn't.
The way she had thanked him…
The way her expression had softened when she looked at him…
Sasuke exhaled sharply, running a hand through his hair. What's wrong with me?
He told himself it was nothing. That he was just overthinking things. But the more he tried to convince himself, the more her face lingered in his mind.
"Troublesome," he muttered under his breath, echoing a phrase Shikamaru often used.
The worst part was that it wasn't just her strength he noticed now. It was the smaller things—the way her brow furrowed when she focused, the faint warmth of her voice, the softness in her eyes when she spoke.
He turned abruptly and headed inside, shutting the door behind him.
I need to focus, he thought firmly. This doesn't matter.
But deep down, he knew something had changed. And no matter how much he tried to deny it, Hinata Hyuuga had managed to slip past his walls—quietly, effortlessly, without him even realizing it.
