"Find anything on the bleachers?" Mason asked, pouring two cups of coffee.
"No, but I do have some theories, just nothing that confirms anything."
"Like what?"
"A sympathetic resonance caused by a)Magic, b)emotions or c)both. Or a ghost or ghosts."
"Sympathetic resonance? I don't think I've ever heard of that before."
"Sympathetic resonance is a phenomenon where a passive object vibrates in response to an external vibration that has a similar harmonic likeness. It's also known as sympathetic vibration." Diana took a sip from the cup of coffee Mason handed her. "Like one tuning fork can set off another if their vibrational frequency is the same."
"So something else was vibrating and it set off the bleachers?"
"Magic does follow some of the laws of physics and it can also answer to emotions." Diana nodded. "And the kids were feeling a Hell of a lot of emotions."
"And two of them have seeds of Magic in them, Xander and the baby. Two of them are psychic, Xander and Cordelia and we're still working on figuring out just how strong and what they can do and all of them have had Magic done on them repeatedly." Mason sighed, he preferred guns, them he understood. Point this end at the bad guys and pull the trigger.
"And then there's the Hellmouth and it's energies to add to the mix. It can have a very slight effect on reality or the energy itself can also have an effect. It's why some musical instruments can make your body feel like it's vibrating, the energy the sound generates."
"Does that mean the Hellmouth is vibrating?"
"If it had anything to do with what happened, it might. An open Hellmouth can cause earthquakes and other disasters. So can closing one for that matter. And earthquakes cause vibrations. But I don't think the Hellmouth is opening, we'd be overrun with demons if it was." Diana decided.
"If it happened because of one or more of the kids it could happen again."
"True and until we know for sure what caused it we can't advise them on how to keep it from happening again." Diana was definitely frustrated by the lack of answers, she was a teacher and a parent and both required two things. Asking questions and providing answers. Right now she had a lot of questions and no answers.
"On another subject, how do we help them deal with the fact that Willow really is dead, a vampire took over her body and Xander destroyed the vampire. And Jesse witnessed it. Which means we need to help them deal with it. With all those emotions they were feeling that may possibly have made the bleachers go nuts."
"The best thing I can think of is to be willing to listen and encourage them to talk about what they're feeling. Not an easy task because Faith's birth mother practically programmed her not to talk about emotions and used them against her."
"Same with Tony Harris. Who's better off out of my sight so I'm not tempted to knock him on his drunk ass one day."
"A sediment I can understand, appreciate and share." Diana rinsed her empty coffee cup out and set it on the towel next to the sink. "How are the background checks coming?"
"We've found out a few interesting facts, quite a few jobs in Sunnydale appear to be generational." Mason answered. "The Police Chief and his son being an officer? It's not just them. Monroe's have been Chief of Police going back to the founding of Sunnydale, nearly a century now. The newspaper has been owned by the same family also since the beginning of Sunnydale. And several generations of the Wilkins family have been Mayor of Sunnydale. They're running checks on several dozen people currently, but based on what they find, may extend them to others. Good news is, background checks don't require warrants. The information found may lead to warrants though. Because something hinky is going on in this town and it looks like it's been going on for decades."
"I've never understood people who willingly prey on humans, let alone people who let demons prey on them." Diana shook her head. "It just doesn't make any sense, what can justify choosing to do either?"
"One of those unanswerable questions I'm afraid." Mason responded grimly. "Because they have their reasons, it's just those reasons only make sense to them. I'm going to grab Xander and Jesse and head home." Mason headed for the door of the kitchen. "Neither of them should be alone tonight, they can camp on the living room floor with Champ, that dog always knows when Xander's feeling down."
"I'll call Lupe and arrange for Cordelia to stay over if she wants. I don't think the girls should be alone either. Cordelia may not have been Willow's friend, but she still knew her and Xander and Jesse matter to both of them. They need to figure out what they're feeling before they can even begin to help the guys with what they're feeling."
"This is the part of being a parent that scares me." Mason muttered. "Praying I'm doing the right thing and not messing up my kid."
"You and me both."
