Chapter 18: Black Goliath
The oppressive shadows seemed to thicken as Bell, Yuu, Welf, and Lili pressed on through the labyrinthine middle floors. Every flicker of torchlight revealed the fine dust and occasional monster bones scattered on the ground—a silent reminder of past battles and fallen adventurers.
Bell, leading the way, kept his grip on the Hestia Knife firm as his eyes swept over their surroundings. "If the safe zone on the 18th floor is as close as we think, it might finally give us a place to recover," he said, his voice tinged with both hope and exhaustion.
Yuu, at his side, glanced at him with a nod of agreement. "We'll need that break. Even with Welf's armor and Lili's support, there's only so much damage we can handle."
Her mind flashed back to the recent onslaught they'd faced in the previous corridors—a "pass parade" of hellhounds and al mirages, followed closely by a wave of goblins that had nearly caught them off guard. It had been Yuu's quick reflexes and Bell's Firebolt magic that had prevented a disastrous outcome.
"Not to mention," Lili chimed in, keeping her crossbow raised and ready, "monsters are tenacious on these floors. This far in, they'll stop at nothing until they have us down."
Just as they rounded another corner, a distant rumbling noise reached their ears. The ground beneath their feet trembled slightly, sending a ripple through the dirt and dust. Yuu and Welf exchanged a wary glance; they'd experienced enough sudden surprises in the Dungeon to know that tremors often meant an incoming threat.
"What was that?" Bell asked, his hand instinctively tightening around his dagger.
Welf narrowed his eyes, turning his head toward the sound. "Not sure, but it came from deeper in. With this place, it could be anything. Let's be ready."
They moved forward cautiously, each member of the group tensed as they kept a watchful eye on the surroundings. The rumbling grew louder, a low, ominous hum that echoed through the stone corridors. And then, a familiar screech tore through the silence—high-pitched, enraged, and unmistakable.
"More hellhounds?" Lili muttered, her voice barely audible as she braced herself, positioning her crossbow.
Yuu's hand instinctively reached for her sword, her grip tightening. "Looks like we're not getting that break yet."
As if on cue, a pack of hellhounds appeared at the far end of the tunnel, their fiery eyes gleaming with malice. They charged, their jaws open wide, flames licking at their sharp teeth. Yuu and Bell stepped forward together, moving in sync, their stances mirroring each other's as they prepared to intercept the pack.
"Lili, Welf—keep behind us. Let's make this quick!" Yuu called over her shoulder, her voice steady despite the imminent threat.
Bell was the first to move. "Firebolt!" he shouted, his dagger pulsing with magic as a bolt of flame shot from its blade. The first hellhound went down, yelping as it was struck, but the others pressed forward undeterred.
Yuu followed, her sword cutting through the air in swift, powerful arcs as she closed in on the creatures. She moved with a ferocity that matched the hellhounds, each strike precise and unrelenting. One by one, the monsters fell under the relentless teamwork of Yuu and Bell, their bodies dissolving into smoke as their magic stones clattered to the ground.
Welf joined in, his sword flashing as he kept the rear protected, watching for any sign of a second wave. Lili took advantage of the openings, using her crossbow to pick off any stragglers that tried to dodge Bell and Yuu's strikes.
Moments later, the tunnel was quiet once again, the only sound the heavy breathing of the group as they regrouped. Lili bent down to collect the magic stones, tucking them away into her bag.
"You two are starting to look like a synchronized dance team out there," Welf said with a smirk, glancing between Bell and Yuu.
Bell, cheeks flushed, glanced away, scratching the back of his head with a sheepish grin. "I-It's just that we're getting more used to working together, that's all."
Yuu gave him an approving nod, though she kept her gaze focused on the path ahead. "We'll need that coordination if we're going to make it to the safe zone in one piece."
The group moved onward, deeper into the Dungeon, each step bringing them closer to the 18th floor. The air grew heavier, more stifling, as if the walls themselves were pressing down upon them. Yet there was also a strange anticipation, an unspoken hope shared among the four as they trudged on.
Finally, they reached a larger, open chamber, its ceiling stretching high above them. Sunlight streamed through narrow cracks in the stone, casting beams of light that created a surreal, almost otherworldly atmosphere. There, in the center, was a massive set of stairs descending to what they knew had to be the 18th floor.
Welf's eyes gleamed as he took in the sight, a grin spreading across his face. "There it is—the way down. We actually made it."
Bell's face lit up, his fatigue momentarily forgotten. "I can't believe it. After all that…"
But before anyone could take another step, the ground began to tremble once again. This time, the rumbling was louder, closer, as if something massive was approaching from below.
"Oh, no…" Lili whispered, her eyes widening as she looked around frantically. "I think we've triggered something."
A sharp crack split the air as part of the floor collapsed, revealing a cavernous pit below. From within, a pair of massive, crimson eyes stared up at them, and a deep, guttural growl filled the chamber.
Yuu's heart pounded as she took in the sight—a creature so enormous it barely fit within the confines of the pit. Its black, scaly skin shimmered in the light, and its claws dug into the walls as it started to pull itself upward.
"Everyone, move back!" she yelled, her instincts kicking in as she raised her sword defensively. "We can't take this thing here."
The creature let out a roar, and its massive arm swung out of the pit, smashing into the chamber floor with enough force to send debris flying in every direction. Bell, Welf, and Lili dove to the sides, narrowly avoiding the shrapnel.
"What in the world is that thing?" Welf asked, his face pale as he gripped his sword.
Lili's voice shook. "I-I don't know, but it's not something we're ready for. This is way beyond us."
Yuu's gaze remained fixed on the creature as it continued to claw its way out of the pit, her jaw set in determination. "We don't have to beat it. Just distract it long enough to get to the stairs."
Bell nodded, determination flashing in his eyes. "Then let's give it everything we've got. We're not stopping here."
The creature lunged forward, its massive jaws snapping at the air as it advanced. Yuu darted to the side, slicing at one of its legs with her sword, her strikes landing with a dull thud against its tough hide. Bell followed suit, attacking from the opposite side with Firebolt, aiming for its vulnerable joints.
Welf and Lili took turns drawing the creature's attention, using hit-and-run tactics to keep it off balance. Lili's crossbow bolts and Welf's fire-infused swings forced it to turn its head in multiple directions, buying precious seconds each time it faltered.
But the creature was relentless, its movements becoming more frantic as it neared the group. Each step shook the chamber, and cracks formed in the walls as it unleashed a roar of fury. One of its claws narrowly missed Bell, who stumbled back, catching his breath as he reoriented himself.
"We can't keep this up," Yuu panted, a bead of sweat trickling down her face. "We need a final push."
Bell's eyes flickered with resolve, his gaze locking onto the stairs. "Then let's do it. Everyone, together—one final sprint!"
With a shared nod, the group bolted for the stairs, each of them pushing through the exhaustion that weighed down their limbs. The creature let out one last roar, lunging after them with a speed that belied its massive size. Just as it reached them, Welf turned, raising his sword high and unleashing a blast of fire at its face, momentarily blinding it.
"Go!" he shouted, as Bell, Yuu, and Lili descended the stairs. He followed close behind, his breaths coming in labored gasps as they hurtled down the steps.
They didn't stop until they reached the bottom, their hearts pounding as they stumbled into a sprawling chamber. The faint sound of the creature's roars faded as they moved further into the floor, the tension finally giving way to relief.
The safe zone lay before them, a surreal paradise within the dungeon—a lush, green meadow dotted with glowing crystals and a gentle river flowing through the center. The peaceful ambiance stood in stark contrast to the chaos they had just escaped.
For a moment, none of them spoke, each taking in the sight with a mixture of disbelief and awe.
"We made it," Bell finally whispered, his voice filled with wonder.
Yuu sank to the ground, letting out a long breath as she stared up at the ceiling. "Yeah… we did."
Lili collapsed beside her, a tired but triumphant smile spreading across her face. "This place… it's beautiful."
Welf, grinning, slung an arm over Bell's shoulders. "This, my friends, is a victory."
The group sat together, letting the peace of the safe zone wash over them as they caught their breath, knowing they'd earned every bit of respite this sanctuary had to offer. The shadows of the Dungeon might still loom over them, but for now, they could rest—and prepare for whatever awaited them beyond the sanctuary of the 18th floor.
The morning mist settled like a delicate veil over the floating island of Rivira, the 18th floor's coveted sanctuary. Bell, Yuu, Welf, and Lili moved through Rivira's bustling market streets, the vibrant atmosphere almost a stark contrast to the dangers they'd faced in the Dungeon just days before. Rivira felt like a city suspended in time, the crystal formations twinkling in the dawn light, casting prismatic rainbows that danced across their faces.
"Hard to believe a place like this is still in the Dungeon," Yuu said, casting her gaze over the sparkling townscape. The contrast of Rivira's beauty was nearly enough to make her forget the deadly floors above them—almost.
Bell looked at Yuu, smiling with that unshakable determination he always wore. "It feels safe for now, doesn't it?" he said, as if attempting to reassure himself as much as her.
As they passed various shops, Lili kept them moving efficiently, bargaining expertly with shopkeepers for rations, antidotes, and fresh supplies. It felt almost surreal, strolling through Rivira's stalls, far removed from the hostile Dungeon monsters that awaited them above and below.
Welf's eyes gleamed as he caught sight of some exotic metals on display at a nearby smithy. "Hey, Yuu," he called, nodding to the gleaming iron and dark, stardust-speckled ore. "Might want to check that out—nothing quite like these materials on the surface."
"Maybe later," Yuu replied, a faint smile tugging at her lips as she watched his enthusiasm. It was rare to see Welf this genuinely captivated by something unrelated to fighting or survival. Rivira felt different to each of them—a rare sanctuary where even hardened adventurers could remember what it felt like to be… ordinary. But something in Yuu's gut warned her that it wouldn't last long.
Their supplies gathered, the group found a small tavern and secured a booth in the corner. The weight of exhaustion was beginning to settle over them, and even Yuu, who rarely allowed herself to relax fully, found a small measure of peace. Bell ordered a platter of warm bread and stew for everyone, their first proper meal since entering the Dungeon's lower floors.
Lili stretched out her sore arms. "Feels like it's been a lifetime since we could just… breathe," she said, slumping against the back of the booth. She gave Bell a sidelong look. "You're probably itching to go deeper, aren't you?"
Bell's face turned red, scratching the back of his head sheepishly. "Maybe a little," he admitted. "But a break here isn't so bad. It's nice to have everyone together… safe."
Yuu smirked, nudging him. "Enjoy it while you can," she teased. "Knowing you, we'll be back in danger before long."
Bell laughed, catching her gaze and holding it a moment longer than usual. Yuu's expression softened, her defenses lowering ever so slightly in his company.
"Look at you two," Welf grinned, breaking the moment. "Like kids on a school trip."
Yuu rolled her eyes, but her expression stayed light. For just a brief moment, they were a small family, laughing and sharing stories, their eyes brighter despite the shadowy reputation Rivira held. The specter of danger wasn't entirely absent, however. As they shared stories, fragments of overheard conversations from nearby adventurers began to piece together a picture of unease.
"...strange creatures spotted further down."
"…some people say they've seen entire sections of the floor shifting on their own… like it's… alive."
"Must've been the tremors."
Lili shuddered, visibly disturbed by the talk. "Are they saying the Dungeon's… retaliating?"
Welf's smile faded, and he leaned in, lowering his voice. "It's like the Dungeon knows something's changed. I've seen monsters adapt before, but entire floors shifting?" He looked from Bell to Yuu, brow furrowing. "That's… something else."
Bell's fists clenched, his voice resolute. "If there's a way through, we'll find it. Whatever's happening, we'll get past it. Together." His voice carried a weight beyond his words, an unwavering belief in their strength as a unit.
Just as they were about to relax, there was a sudden commotion. A series of cries echoed from the market outside, sending a ripple of unease through the patrons around them. Welf, eyes sharp, leaned over to peer out the window, only to see a group of adventurers running past, frantic, as if something had struck fear into them.
One of them stumbled inside, his face pale and slick with sweat. "The northern ridge," he panted, doubling over as he tried to catch his breath. "It's… something… moving out there."
Yuu stood up immediately, her senses on high alert. "What do you mean, moving?" she asked, her voice calm yet commanding, an edge of steel within it.
The man looked at her, his eyes wide. "It's the ground. It's shifting. The crystals—they're… melting." He shook his head, unable to explain further as he staggered back outside, calling for his companions to move further from the northern part of Rivira.
Yuu turned to Bell and the others, face set with quiet determination. "This doesn't feel like a natural Dungeon shift," she murmured. "Something's triggering it."
Bell nodded, sharing her instinctual concern. "Hestia… we should make sure she's safe."
Together, they made their way back to the temporary quarters where Hestia was staying, only to find her in the middle of an argument with a tall, brash adventurer with unruly hair. He looked down on Hestia, mocking her.
"Your precious little adventurers might not make it past Rivira if you keep tempting fate," he sneered.
Bell stepped forward, fists clenched. "That's enough," he said firmly, voice steady but dangerous.
The man sneered, backing off. "Not everyone's cut out to survive down here. Your goddess should know that." With that, he stalked off, leaving Hestia glaring after him, visibly shaken but resolute.
"Bell… Yuu…" Hestia's face softened, and she took a deep breath, her shoulders relaxing. "I'm okay. But we should prepare to leave Rivira soon."
As she spoke, an all-too-familiar tremor shook the ground beneath them. This one felt more intense than the subtle shifts from earlier, causing the walls to creak. Yuu felt a chill crawl up her spine as she braced herself, looking toward the outer edges of Rivira.
A sudden roar echoed across the floor—low, rumbling, and so powerful that it seemed to vibrate through their bones. It didn't sound like any monster they'd heard before. Bell's face went white.
"That sound… it came from the ridge," he said, eyes wide with a mixture of fear and awe.
Just then, Ryuu appeared at the entrance, her face serious. She'd overheard the commotion and had rushed over. "That sound…" she began, her tone calm but grim. "It's something massive. And whatever it is… it's on its way here."
The ground trembled again, more forcefully this time, and a dark shadow seemed to fall over Rivira. Hestia, alarmed, turned to Bell and the group. "We need to stay together. Whatever's happening, we face it as one."
Yuu's hand instinctively went to her weapon, a glint of resolve in her eyes. "If we're going to fight, we'll need a strategy. We can't face something this big without knowing what we're dealing with."
Ryuu nodded, her voice steady. "Agreed. I've fought on this floor before, and I've never heard anything like that."
Just as they finished speaking, a figure approached through the mist—a familiar one. Asfi, Hermes' trusted messenger and warrior, arrived, face set in grim determination.
"Bell Cranel, Yuu, and Hestia-sama," she greeted them, a brief bow of respect before she continued. "Hermes sent me to aid you, but even he wasn't expecting this." She looked toward the darkened ridge, where a faint outline of a monstrous figure could be seen moving closer.
Welf's hands tightened around his weapon, eyes narrowed. "Then we'll give it everything we've got," he said, glancing to Bell and Yuu, fire in his eyes.
Bell glanced around, nodding resolutely. "We don't abandon each other." He then turned to Yuu. "Let's get ready. Together."
The tension hung thick in the air, the faint roar echoing from the northern ridge as the shadow loomed closer. Whatever was coming for them, it would test their limits in a way nothing had before.
The distant rumble of footsteps, slow and foreboding, reverberated through Rivira as Bell, Yuu, and their companions gathered at the edge of the town, each tense and ready to face whatever loomed in the dark. The ground shook subtly beneath them, and every so often, a gust of stale air seemed to blow through the streets, carrying with it the ominous promise of something massive stirring.
Ryuu stepped forward, her gaze calm but unwavering. "We don't know exactly what this is, but it's unlike anything this floor has seen before," she stated, her voice echoing against the silence that had fallen over the townspeople. Adventurers, shopkeepers, and merchants—all had stopped their bustling and turned their eyes toward the northern ridge, fear evident on their faces.
Yuu stood with Bell beside her, her gaze steely as she took in the sight of their comrades gathering around, each one armed and resolute. She felt a strange sense of calm wash over her as she looked at Bell, his expression fierce and determined.
"Bell," she murmured, and he turned to meet her gaze, a glint of resolve in his eyes. "Whatever happens… I'm with you."
He reached out, his fingers brushing lightly against her hand, a moment of connection before the storm. "We'll get through this," he whispered, the warmth in his voice like a promise.
A sudden, commanding voice broke through the murmur of the crowd, pulling their attention back to the front lines.
"We've got reports from the scouts—there's no easy way out of this floor. The Dungeon's closed every escape route." The speaker, Bors, a rugged veteran from the Guild, turned to the crowd, his expression hardened. "Our only option now is to fight. To hold out until someone can find a way out."
A ripple of fear ran through the assembled adventurers, but Bell stepped forward, his hand tightly gripping the hilt of his dagger, Hestia's Knife. His voice, clear and steady, cut through the rising tension. "We're not alone here. We'll fight together, and we'll protect each other." He turned to face the crowd, his eyes fierce. "Everyone here has a reason to survive. Let's make sure we all do."
Yuu felt a surge of pride as she watched him rally the crowd, his words giving strength to those around them. Even as her mind churned with the worry of what lay ahead, she felt a calm settle over her, an assurance that with Bell at her side, they had a chance.
From behind them, Asfi appeared, her expression grim as she held up a map of Rivira, the layout dotted with small marks indicating areas where the structural weaknesses could be exploited to bottleneck any potential invasion of monsters. She spread the map on a nearby table, gathering everyone close.
"This isn't going to be an ordinary fight," Asfi said, voice steady. "The creature we're facing—if it's what we think it is—will require every ounce of strength we've got. We need to set up barricades here, here, and here." She pointed to the map with precision. "If we can slow it down, we might have a chance to weaken it with concentrated attacks."
Welf cracked his knuckles, a glint of excitement in his eyes. "Then let's get to work."
The group scattered to prepare, setting up makeshift barricades, gathering supplies, and fortifying the vulnerable points in Rivira's natural defenses. Yuu and Bell stayed side by side, working in silence but sharing glances that spoke volumes.
"Yuu," Bell said quietly as they fastened a heavy beam to secure one of the barricades. His voice softened, and he turned to face her fully, his expression serious. "I… I know I wouldn't have made it this far without you. Just… stay close to me out there, alright?"
Her heart swelled with warmth at his words, and she offered him a small smile. "I'll be right beside you, Bell. Just don't do anything reckless."
The moment was broken by a resounding crash. The ground trembled as if the very core of Rivira was quaking. In the distance, the dark shadow of a colossal figure began to materialize, illuminated by the unnatural light of the Dungeon crystals. A collective gasp swept through the crowd as the shadow resolved into the hulking form of the Black Goliath.
Standing over forty feet tall, its massive frame was covered in pitch-black fur that seemed to absorb the light around it. Its eyes glowed with a baleful crimson, and its thick, stone-like skin was riddled with scars that bore testament to countless battles. The creature's roar was a sound like none other—low, guttural, and vibrating with an ancient malice. The sheer force of it sent a shockwave through Rivira, rattling the buildings and sending dust and pebbles tumbling from rooftops.
Yuu's hand tightened on her sword, her eyes locked on the massive creature. It felt like staring into the very heart of the Dungeon, a darkness so dense and primal that it was almost tangible. She took a step forward, heart pounding as adrenaline coursed through her veins.
Asfi's voice cut through the chaos. "Everyone, remember the plan! We need to slow it down—target its joints!"
Bell turned to Yuu, a steely determination in his eyes. "Ready?"
She nodded, drawing her weapon as her gaze met his. "Let's do this."
As the Black Goliath advanced, the first wave of adventurers charged forward, weapons raised and spells at the ready. Arrows flew through the air, striking the creature's thick hide with little effect, glancing off like twigs against a stone. Mages unleashed torrents of fire and lightning, but the creature barely flinched, pressing onward with relentless strength.
Bell and Yuu moved in unison, darting between the columns of Rivira's streets, using the natural terrain to dodge the creature's heavy blows. Welf followed close behind, his blade at the ready, while Lili provided support from a safe distance, her arrows aimed at the creature's eyes in an attempt to disorient it.
"Now!" Asfi called, and a coordinated volley of magical attacks rained down on the Black Goliath, striking its legs in a dazzling display of light and sound. The creature stumbled, momentarily slowed, but then it roared, and with a single, sweeping motion, sent a shockwave that shattered the ground beneath their feet.
Yuu was knocked off balance, skidding across the rocky floor, but Bell was at her side in an instant, pulling her up before the creature's massive fist could come down on her.
"Stay with me!" he shouted, eyes blazing with determination. They regrouped, breath ragged but unwavering.
Yuu felt something stir within her—a dark power, buried deep, waiting. It pulsed in time with her heartbeat, almost as if calling out to her. She clenched her fists, feeling an unfamiliar surge of strength, but pushed it aside. Now wasn't the time to lose control.
The Black Goliath raised its massive fist, preparing to bring it down on the group of adventurers who had rallied at the forefront. With a guttural cry, Bell raised his dagger, and the silver gleam of Hestia's Knife seemed to shimmer with renewed intensity.
"Firebolt!" Bell yelled, the arc of flames shooting toward the creature's arm. The attack hit its mark, scorching the beast's skin and causing it to recoil.
"Keep it up!" Yuu shouted, swinging her sword in a downward arc that left a glistening trail. The blade bit into the creature's leg, and she felt it shudder beneath the impact, but the monster's regenerative power quickly began to repair the damage.
Ryuu leaped into the fray, her graceful strikes targeting the creature's head and shoulders, each blow swift and precise. She moved with an elegance that made it look effortless, but even her strikes couldn't fully penetrate the Black Goliath's armor-like hide.
"We need more firepower," Welf grunted, gritting his teeth as he hefted his weapon and swung with all his strength. "This thing's practically invincible!"
Yuu glanced at Bell, their breaths coming in sync as they dodged another of the creature's heavy blows. "We have to keep pushing it back," she said, her voice unwavering. "We can't let it reach Rivira."
Bell nodded, gripping her hand briefly. "Then let's give it everything we've got."
Together, they charged, their movements a coordinated dance as they struck at the creature's vulnerable points. Each blow was calculated, each step taken in perfect synchronization. The Black Goliath roared, swinging its arm in a wild arc that sent a group of adventurers scattering, but Yuu and Bell pressed on, their determination as unyielding as the creature's assault.
The ground quaked underfoot with each step the Black Goliath took, and the stone buildings of Rivira shook as if in fear of the monster bearing down on them. Bell and Yuu moved in concert, side by side, dodging the sweeping attacks of the massive creature's fists as it attempted to crush anything in its path. All around them, adventurers fired arrows, loosed spells, and charged with weapons, each one giving their all to stall the beast. But the Goliath only roared louder, each wound regenerating in seconds, as if mocking their efforts.
A fierce wave of heat surged from Bell as he shouted, "Firebolt!" sending a stream of flames directly at the Black Goliath's face. The flames struck with a blinding flash, forcing the creature to shield its eyes with its massive arms.
"Now!" Bell yelled, looking to Yuu.
Yuu took the cue, darting in low toward the creature's legs, aiming for the joints where the skin was less tough and exposed. With a swift, powerful swing, her blade sliced into the thick, muscled limb, leaving a deep gash. The creature stumbled, snarling as it tried to regain its balance.
But as she withdrew, Yuu could feel the strain beginning to weigh on her muscles, the sheer resistance of the creature's body taking its toll on her endurance. Glancing over at Bell, she could see the sweat on his brow, the same fierce determination in his eyes despite his own exhaustion.
"We're getting close, Bell," she panted, a spark of hope in her voice. "We just need to find a way to stop its regeneration."
Bell nodded, his eyes flicking to the distant figures of Ryuu and Welf, who were holding their positions on either side of the creature, focusing on keeping its attention divided.
Meanwhile, Asfi was directing a group of mages from behind the barricades they had erected on the western edge of the town, her voice carrying over the sounds of the ongoing battle. "Prepare to cast your strongest spells! We need to overwhelm it, disrupt its healing!"
The mages nodded, beginning their incantations in unison, and the air crackled with magical energy. Bell and Yuu exchanged a quick glance, understanding they needed to buy the mages as much time as possible.
"Think you can keep up?" Yuu teased, her eyes glinting with a playful challenge even in the face of danger.
Bell flashed her a quick grin. "Let's give it everything we've got."
They moved forward together, coordinating their attacks with the timing of each other's movements. Bell darted in with quick, precise strikes, aiming to agitate the creature and create openings for Yuu, whose powerful swings targeted the creature's weak points with relentless focus.
From the left flank, Welf closed in, his new weapon—a gleaming sword of enchanted steel—swinging with surprising agility as he slashed at the creature's knee. "Yuu! Bell! Keep pushing it back!" he shouted, gritting his teeth as he deflected a crushing blow from the Goliath's arm.
The creature bellowed in fury, slamming its fists into the ground with enough force to send fissures cracking through the earth, but the three of them dodged in time, skidding to a stop as the beast reared back.
But then the Goliath's furious gaze landed directly on them, its red eyes narrowing as it let out a guttural roar that echoed off the walls of Rivira. Before they could react, the creature lunged, its fist descending like a falling boulder. Bell managed to throw himself out of the way, but Yuu stumbled, unable to completely dodge the attack.
"Yuu!" Bell cried, his heart clenching as he saw her roll to the side, narrowly avoiding the crushing weight of the Goliath's fist.
"Still here," Yuu managed, breathless but undeterred, as she staggered back to her feet.
But before she could fully recover, the creature's hand lashed out, striking her with a glancing blow that sent her hurtling backward. Bell's heart lurched as he watched her fall, a streak of blood on her cheek as she pushed herself up again, wincing in pain but refusing to back down.
Without hesitation, Bell raced toward her, blocking another of the creature's swings as it turned its full focus onto them. He stood protectively in front of her, his jaw set as he glared up at the massive creature.
"Don't...even think about it," he muttered, his voice barely above a whisper, but filled with a quiet intensity. He could feel something stirring within him, a determination so fierce it was almost tangible.
Yuu pushed herself up, her hand reaching for his. "I told you, we're doing this together. You don't have to take all the hits."
Their fingers brushed, a brief moment of connection that grounded them both amidst the chaos. They had each other's backs, and that thought was enough to give them the strength to keep going.
Suddenly, Asfi's voice rang out. "All mages, release your spells—now!"
A chorus of incantations filled the air as dozens of spells hurtled toward the Black Goliath, striking it in rapid succession with a series of brilliant explosions. The creature roared, thrashing as the magic tore into its body, its regeneration momentarily halted by the sheer volume of attacks.
Seeing their chance, Yuu and Bell darted forward once more, coordinating their strikes with precision. They attacked its legs and abdomen, forcing it to stagger backward. But even as they fought, the Goliath's resilience became clear—it was already beginning to regenerate again, the wounds closing faster with each passing moment.
"We need something stronger," Yuu muttered, frustration evident in her tone. "It's not enough."
Bell gripped Hestia's Knife tightly, a flicker of determination sparking in his eyes. "There might be one more way…"
He turned to Yuu, his expression unreadable. "If I use all my strength—everything I have—there's a chance I could amplify my Firebolt with enough force to stun it. Just long enough for you to hit it with everything you've got."
Yuu's eyes widened, and she shook her head, her hand reaching for his arm. "Bell, no. That's too dangerous—you'll overexert yourself."
But he simply smiled, his gaze steady. "We don't have any other choice. If we don't stop it here, Rivira won't stand a chance."
Yuu held his gaze, her heart pounding as she saw the resolve in his eyes. She wanted to tell him to stop, to think of another way, but the truth was clear—they were out of time. So instead, she reached out, her hand resting on his for a moment.
"Then I'm right beside you," she said quietly, her voice filled with a quiet strength.
Bell nodded, the warmth of her touch steadying him. He took a step forward, raising his dagger, and began to focus, channeling every ounce of energy he had into the blade. A brilliant light began to gather, illuminating the area around them with an almost blinding intensity.
"Firebolt!" Bell shouted, the word filled with a power he hadn't known he possessed, and the blade exploded with energy, a searing torrent of flames roaring toward the Goliath with unprecedented force. The flames struck the creature square in the chest, engulfing it in a wave of heat and light that momentarily blinded everyone nearby.
Yuu didn't waste a second. With Bell's energy blazing around them, she surged forward, her own weapon glowing as she prepared to strike. She could feel the dormant power within her stirring, responding to her desperation. As she swung her blade down, a surge of raw energy coursed through her, a dark and familiar strength that felt both powerful and terrifying.
"Take this!" she cried, her voice ringing with defiance as her blade connected with the Goliath's chest. The impact resonated through the air, a shockwave of energy rippling out as the creature let out a deafening roar, its massive form finally buckling under the force of their combined efforts.
The Black Goliath stumbled, its regeneration halted as the sheer power of the attacks tore through its defenses. For a brief, breathtaking moment, the massive creature wavered, its form crumbling beneath the weight of their assault.
But even as the creature faltered, Bell staggered, the strength leaving his limbs as he dropped to one knee, his breathing ragged. Yuu knelt beside him, worry evident in her gaze as she reached out to steady him.
"Bell—are you okay?" she whispered, her voice filled with concern.
He managed a weak smile, nodding as he caught his breath. "I'm fine… just needed a moment."
The two of them looked up, watching as the Goliath's form began to regenerate once more, though slower this time, its movements sluggish as it tried to rally.
But before they could react, a deafening roar tore through the air as reinforcements arrived—Ryuu, Welf, and the rest of the adventurers from Rivira charged forward, rallying around Bell and Yuu as they prepared for one final assault on the creature.
"We're all in this together!" Welf shouted, his sword raised high as he joined them in a last push against the seemingly invincible monster.
A breath of stillness hung in the air, the calm before the storm, as the adventurers regrouped for what felt like a final assault. The Black Goliath loomed before them, scarred and seething, its hulking form regenerated but visibly slower, each movement an enraged response to the relentless assault it had faced. The momentary hesitation in its defenses was all Bell, Yuu, and their allies needed. They knew that one wrong move now would mean certain defeat, yet together they braced, ready to give their all.
"Everyone, this is it!" Asfi's voice rang out with a force that seemed to rattle the walls of Rivira. She signaled to the mages, her gloved hand slicing through the air. "Prepare your most powerful incantations!"
Yuu and Bell exchanged a look of mutual understanding. They both knew the toll this fight had taken on them, but neither one flinched. Bell, battered and exhausted, tightened his grip on Hestia's Knife, while Yuu steadied her blade, a fierce determination in her eyes.
With a nod to each other, they moved forward, just as Welf joined their side, his own face shadowed with exhaustion but ablaze with unyielding resolve.
"Ready to end this?" Welf asked, grinning through the fatigue.
"More than ready," Bell answered, his eyes reflecting the fiery determination surging through him.
Yuu looked over her shoulder at the approaching adventurers, each stepping up to lend their strength to this final attack. They knew the danger, but the spark of hope radiating from Bell and Yuu seemed to ignite something in them, a reminder that this battle was theirs to win or lose together.
Asfi glanced at her mages, who nodded back to her, spells readied and eyes fixed on the Goliath. She turned to Bell, Yuu, and the others at the front. "We're going to create an opening. Hit it with everything you have!"
With a signal, Asfi's mages let loose a torrent of blazing light and searing flames, the combined spells striking the Black Goliath in a fierce barrage. The creature roared, the heat and energy forcing it to stagger as smoke poured from its charred skin. Taking advantage of the moment, Bell and Yuu moved as one, pushing forward and weaving through the debris.
Yuu could feel her pulse quicken as they approached the Black Goliath's exposed side. Every step brought her closer to the dark power within her, that buried strength that lurked just below the surface, begging to be unleashed. She stole a glance at Bell, whose own focus was unwavering, his eyes fixed on the massive target ahead.
"Stay close to me," she whispered, more to herself than to him, as they closed in on the Goliath.
Bell's gaze softened for a fraction of a second as he looked back at her. "I'm right here."
He took the lead, using his agility to dodge the Goliath's swinging arm as it attempted to retaliate, its beady eyes glowing with rage. Bell's voice rang out, fierce and clear, as he called upon his power. "Firebolt!"
A blinding stream of fire shot from his hand, striking the Goliath's shoulder and driving it back. The flames seared the creature's hide, and as it reeled, Yuu saw her chance.
Steeling herself, Yuu dashed forward, raising her blade high, and felt the familiar warmth of her dormant power beginning to stir. Each step felt heavier, the dark energy unfurling within her, and her senses sharpened, the world around her becoming almost painfully clear. She had long suppressed this power, but now, in the heat of battle, she let it emerge.
She lunged forward with a guttural cry, her blade sinking deep into the Goliath's side. The impact sent a pulse of dark energy through the creature, momentarily paralyzing it. It bellowed in pain, its movements faltering as the magic coursed through its body, hindering its regeneration.
Bell's eyes widened as he felt the raw force emanating from Yuu, a power that seemed almost foreign yet unmistakably hers.
"Yuu…that power…"
Yuu pulled back, her breathing heavy, yet the energy within her only grew stronger, the heat of it coursing through her veins. She gave him a faint smile, her grip on her sword tightening. "It's… a little different, but it's ours to wield. Together."
With a nod, Bell raised his dagger, the air around him thick with anticipation. He began to channel his Argonaut ability, feeling the familiar surge of energy flow into his blade as it glowed, the radiant light almost blinding. The Goliath seemed to sense the threat, its eyes locking onto Bell with a renewed fury as it raised its fists, prepared to strike.
The creature's hand came crashing down, and in one swift move, Bell and Yuu sprang apart, avoiding the crushing blow that left a crater in the ground. Bell took the opportunity to charge his Argonaut ability even further, pouring everything he had into the knife, the light intensifying as he prepared for the final strike.
"All units, fall back!" Asfi's voice echoed, and the adventurers retreated, giving Bell and Yuu the space they needed.
The air was thick with tension as Bell faced the Goliath, his dagger radiating with the power he'd gathered. He took a steadying breath, looking to Yuu for a final moment of reassurance.
Yuu met his gaze, her expression resolute, her own power thrumming beneath her skin. "You've got this, Bell," she whispered, her voice filled with conviction.
And with a final nod, he charged forward, his dagger raised high as he yelled out.
The energy in his blade exploded outward as he thrust the dagger into the Goliath's chest, the light engulfing the creature in a massive burst of power. The ground trembled, and for a moment, it was as if time itself stood still, the only sound the deep, resonating hum of Bell's magic.
Then, with a deafening roar, the Goliath faltered, its massive form convulsing as cracks spread across its body. The light from Bell's strike tore through it, shattering the creature from the inside out. The Goliath let out one final, pained cry before its body collapsed, disintegrating into a cloud of black dust.
As the dust settled, silence fell over Rivira, broken only by the ragged breaths of the adventurers who stared in awe at the place where the Black Goliath had once stood.
Bell staggered, nearly collapsing from exhaustion, but Yuu was there in an instant, her arms steadying him as she offered a quiet, reassuring smile.
"You did it, Bell," she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper, but the pride in her words unmistakable.
He looked up at her, a weary grin spreading across his face. "No… we did."
The weight of what they'd accomplished washed over them, and for a moment, all they could do was stand there, leaning on each other for support as they caught their breath.
Around them, the other adventurers began to cheer, the sound rising as the realization of their victory spread. Asfi approached them, her usually composed demeanor softened by a smile of relief and admiration.
"That was… incredible," she said, her eyes meeting theirs. "You've given everyone here a story they'll tell for generations."
Bell blushed slightly, the praise making him feel both proud and humbled. But as he glanced at Yuu, he felt a different warmth in his chest—a feeling that went beyond pride, something stronger, something deeper.
Welf and the rest of their party joined them, each offering words of congratulations and relief, their camaraderie strengthened by the battle they had faced together.
As the adrenaline faded, Hestia rushed forward, wrapping her arms around Bell with a tearful expression. "You had me so worried! But I knew you'd make it… I knew you would."
Bell smiled, hugging her back, his heart swelling with gratitude for each person there, for the bonds they'd forged through fire and determination.
Lili and Welf exchanged grins, their expressions mirroring the sense of victory that filled the air. "Let's head back and celebrate!" Lili said, her voice bright with excitement.
But before they could turn to leave, Yuu's hand lingered on Bell's, her fingers gently intertwining with his. He glanced at her, surprised, and in that moment, he felt the rush of everything they had shared—the fear, the courage, the unspoken connection that had grown between them.
"You saved all of us today, Bell," Yuu said softly, her gaze steady. "And you never had to do it alone."
He squeezed her hand, a faint blush coloring his cheeks. "Neither did you."
They stood together, silent but understanding, as Rivira's town celebrated around them. The victory was theirs, but it was also a reminder that every step, every moment they had endured, had been made possible by the strength they found in each other.
As they walked back together, surrounded by friends and allies, the unspoken promise between Bell and Yuu lingered in the air—a vow that whatever challenges lay ahead, they would face them side by side.
