Chapter 33
Diagnosis
Team rwby and Winter were now taking Reese to the med bay at mach speed.
"So you really don't have any idea what's wrong with him?" Weiss asks.
"I'm positive it's baffling to me that he would shut down like that, the only time he would close his eyes is if he is sleeping." Winter says.
They made it to the med bay and in an instant from Yangs perspective it was a mad dash to get Reese back up.
"He's going to be alright yang, he has been through worst." Blake says.
But Yang wasn't listening. She has her hand on her belly and a tear formed on her eyes.
Meanwhile in one of the ICU Reese was going through brain scans, body scans, blood tests etc, but it will take time for the results to come in, so Winter found herself sitting next to Weiss back in the waiting room.
"Is he ok?" Ruby asks.
Winter looks up and sees the whole team looking at her.
"Well initial scans say he is fine, no problem breathing, temperature is normal, no bruising." Winter says.
"Do you think it's a side effect from his training?" Ruby asks.
"Unlikely. The training he went through was mostly physical and mental but we allowed long breaks so they could get adjusted. The only thing that comes to mind is the…. Oh no." Winter says as she stands up to grab a tablet.
"What?" Weiss asks.
Winter wasn't listening; she was accessing the files on Reese from his 18 years lifespan.
Team rwby was now looking at Winter waiting for a response.
Thirty seconds later Winter found it.
"Here are his treatments." Winter says.
"What are those?" Yang asks.
"Well to get him ready for project predator, he had to undergo growth enhancement drugs and hormone therapy just so he could look like a 18 year old student, part of the side effects was that his body possibly got a random organ failure, and well from the looks of it, it got him." Winter says.
"You mean he is going to die?" Yang says in panic.
"Relax Yang, your husband is not going anywhere. We can replicate organs for him and in fact we do have some on hand for him,made from his dna." Winter says.
"That's good and all but you just said his dna, that means it will fail again later down the road." Weiss says.
Winter was about to counter but then realized she was right it would happen again.
"Augghh! We should've realized that." Winter says.
"Is there another way?" Blake asks with a hint of desperation.
"The only other way is he gets a transplant and you are all aware of the risks in that, or we fabricate a artificial organ for him till a suitable donor can be found." Winter says.
At that moment Yang found all eyes on her waiting for her choice.
"Can't you make the call? Your his mother." Yang says back.
"If he wasn't married I could make the decision, but since he's married well you know." Winter says.
Yang then walked away to think in silence, she found herself near a window looking outside and seeing the ground below, she thought about everything she has done with Reese from her first encounter, to the first date, now her marriage, and her nights together with him and now she is a month into her pregnancy with their child.
"I don't know if I can make this call." Yang says with a hint of sadness.
"I don't think that's the case, you have made some calls that saved him." Winter says.
"Like when?" Yang asks.
"The one that comes to mind is when you saved him from Ironwood, when I saw you, you came in without a second thought and saved him." Winter says.
Yang flinched from that night. She didn't know what she was doing when she entered that room all she saw was Ironwood pointing something at Reese and well she saw red, and engaged without thinking about it.
"Anyway, did we hear back what's wrong with him?" Yang says as she shakes the thought from her head.
"Well from the blood work his liver is starting to fail, that's an easy diagnosis, and the other is one of his kidneys is shutting down that's why his liver is having a hard time." Winter says.
"Well anything else?" Yang asks.
"Well his old wounds are giving him a hard time, that's why he passed out." Winter says.
"His body just shut down on it's own? How is that possible?" Yang asks.
"Well if anyone gets to a certain pain point the body in self defense will pass out, everyone has one including you." Winter says.
"I probably don't want to find it." Yang says as she rubs her arm (she is nervous)
"Well anyway what is your decision? The doctors can't wait any longer." Winter says.
Yang looked down and muttered something.
"What?I didn't hear you." Winter says.
"I said do it." Yang says as her throat closes from the grief from the choice.
Winter nods and taps something on her tablet and walks away.
"You'll be able to see him in a few hours. I'll come get you when it's time." Winter says.
After a few minutes Yang walked back to her team and sat down waiting for the clock to run down.
About the four hour mark Winter opened the door from the OR and gave a sigh of relief.
"Good news we were able to remove the compromised organs, and we got him a makeshift liver, it filters out the toxins from his body like a normal liver." Winter says.
"What's the bad?" Weiss asks.
"Well it's minor bad news. Because it's a mechanical liver he needs to get it cleaned out once every three months. It's better than the old ones, they need to be cleaned out once every week." Winter says.
"So how is he now?" Yang asks.
"Well he is asleep, we gave him a dose to keep him under till tomorrow morning so that his blood is filtered, but you can still see him and in his wife's case, stay with him." Winter says.
Team RWBY then went to his room to see what he looks like, and to no one's surprise his hair was usually all messy because he wears a helmet all the time, and his breathing is slow and steady, but at some point it becomes ragged but it's a brief moment.
"So much bull crap." Ruby says.
"How so you dolt?" Weiss says.
"Well the events in Atlas, then getting you know, then my extraction from said incident, recovery then staying on the run from Salem, and now Reese having issues." Ruby says.
"Well we are in a rough patch right now but things will get better." Blake says.
Yang wasn't listening to them, her eyes were on Reese, his face looked like it had a mixture of emotions. The main ones that stood out for her were pain and sadness.
"Sis?" Ruby says.
"Humm what?" Yang says.
"I was just saying we should get something to eat." Ruby says.
And right on cue the door opened and there was Winter with a few carts of food for the team.
"With everything going on you gals need a break." Winter says.
"Well thank you sis." Weiss says.
After about 20 minutes of eating and conversation things began to settle down.
"So what other treatments are you going to give Reese?" Yang asks.
"Well right now we are using an accelerant healing drug so that he is ready to go in a few days, then all five of you need to start training." Winter says.
"What for?" Ruby asks.
Well in two weeks all the nations of Remnant will conduct a joint attack against Salem and hopefully put a stop to her and her grimms." Winter says.
Everyone went silent after hearing that.
"So how are we going to stop her?" Blake asks.
"Hopefully overwhelming force, as of right now huntsman teams have found several hundred thousand spawning pools where Grimm have been coming out to attack the settlements, and eliminated them." Winter says.
"And that helps how?" Yang asks.
"So that there are no surprises while we prepare, we are also ramping up the robot production, in fact we are using Reese's combat data for the robots thus increasing their combat capabilities." Winter says.
"And why are you telling us this?" Ruby asks.
"Remember a couple of days ago where I asked you to make a decision, that's what it's about, so have you?" Winter asks.
Team rwby then looked at each other, although Winter didn't know the team dynamics but she could see they were talking using facial expressions.
All of them nodded after a few minutes.
"Good now I need to talk to you individually for a few minutes starting with Ruby." Winter says.
Ruby got a worried look on her face.
"Don't worry it's nothing bad, it will be a few words and you'll be done." Winter says.
After a few minutes Winter came back without Ruby.
"Where is my sister?" Yang asks.
"She went back to the cabin to get some rest." Winter says.
"That's odd she wasn't tired when she left." Weiss says.
"Yep maybe it's the food coma, anyway Weiss and Blake come with me." Winter says.
Then Yang was all bye herself watching her husband sleep but her daydream was interrupted by Winter.
"Your turn and you'll be back with Reese." Winter says.
Yang nods and walks away from Reese.
The walk was pretty much silent. Yang didn't want to say anything, and Winter just kept to herself.
When they got to the office Yang didn't notice a black rug on the ground.
Winter took a seat behind the desk and smiled at Yang.
"So how is the baby progressing?" Winter asks.
"Well as far as I can tell it's fine, I could do without morning sickness." Yang chuckles.
"Yeah I understand when I was carrying Reese he was making me sick every afternoon." Winter says as she hits a key on her keyboard.
Just then Yang felt it a sensation she experienced once before and it was terrifying and now it was happening again.
"What's going on!?" Yang asks in a panic.
"With what's going on I made the decision to give the team some upgrades." Winter says.
Yang looks down and sees the black thing half way up her chest.
Then it stops right at her neck.
"What is this? It feels like Reese's armor." Yang says.
"Sorta his is gen 8 this is gen 5 the generation before it can use an Ai." Winter says.
"What can it do?" Yang says as she looks over it.
"Well you can run faster, have enhanced armor that complements your aura, and cloak." Winter says.
"So what can my husband do." Yang says.
"Not exactly he can do other things but we are not here for comparison, here is your helmet." Winter says as she hands over the helmet.
Yang looks at it and sees there is a yellow mark on it probably to indicate who is wearing it.
"Probably won't work with my hair in the way." Yang says.
"This generation was meant to work for women with long hair, it will work." Winter says.
Yang puts it on and true to winter's word the armor moved around Yang's hair and made a sealing.
Then it boots up and it goes through the startup phase, after about 15 minutes it was complete and it got off of Yang.
"It will also work with your weapons and prosthetics,so no need to worry, and as a final note when you wear this, have a swim suit on underneath, if you wear regular clothes it makes it uncomfortable, now I do believe you want to be with Reese so go be with him we will get team rwby's training started soon." Winter says.
Yang then went back to the hospital and still found Reese asleep, but as an added bonus his bed got a little bigger to accommodate Yang.
"Wow Winter you thought of everything." Yang says in a low voice.
Yang crawls in and wraps her arms around him.
Well for Yang this was a good wish she was back home where it felt nicer with the open fields birds chirping she dozed off to sleep.
