Ochaco supposed she shouldn't be surprised when she had a very pointed text from Izu-Kun when she got home from hanging out with everyone after the exam.
Even if Izu-Kun hadn't seen the physical part of the exam live or the recordings then Izu-Kun would have at least heard about it from the rest of the teachers.
At least he wasn't that upset with her, but she really could have done without the text of what she did to her parents.
She had been grounded after that, which would have been fine but her parents' concern over her well-being was much harder to deal with.
Ochaco had to spend a lot of time assuring both of her parents that she was fine and not in any real danger when she fell, she was just a little nauseous from using her quirk on herself.
The fact she only used her quirk because of Shinsou was not something they needed to know right now... or ever.
Jiji was allowed to visit her though and which of course with the perfect time for her to break down about the near-death experience after he scooped her up in his arms.
She needed to remember to give Jiji more hugs.
Her two weeks indoors was an exercise in patience afterwards though.
Being allowed to make all of the meals and continue most of her exercise routine indoors kept her from fully succumbing to cabin fever as they waited for her letter.
The day she got her letter from U.A. made her feel so excited and she took every ounce of restraint to not open it right away and wait to meet up with everyone else and see which class they were in.
She was confident most of them passed, herself being the most questionable of passing for the hero course, so it was only a question of who would be in which of the two classes.
Inko-San rented a space for all of them to celebrate with their parents together, they would have space at the lobby in Shoji-San's building but not everyone would have been comfortable to go there.
Ochaco was all but bouncing when they got to the room and once she saw her friends she rushed over to them.
"Guys," She exclaimed hugging both of them and she was so glad to see both of them again after no contact with them for nearly two weeks.
"Hey Uki, I see you've made it pass the media blackout after your high-flying event." Awa-Kun teased as she pulled away.
Ochaco groaned covering her face.
"Does everyone have to know about that?" she asked.
"Fuck around and find out Newton fucker." Bakugou called as he walked over to them with Fumi and Sadi trailing behind them.
In response Ochaco punched his shoulder.
"Can we please open our letters now?" Sadi pleaded holding up his and presumably Bakugou's letters.
"Now that we're all here, I think we can," Inko-San told them before turning to the rest of the parents "I think the kids have waited long enough, everyone gathered around the table over here." Inko-San motioned for everyone to come over to a decent sized circle table.
It took a few moments but once the six of them were sat down and letters ready to be opened.
"Okay, does anyone want to go first? Or will you all open them at once?" Inko-San inquired.
Ochaco traded glances with her friends and Bakugou then as one they started to rip open their letters.
The clatter of five little disks and they paused for a moment.
Izu-Kun hadn't mentioned anything about a little disk and judging from the faces of everyone else they did not expect the disks either.
Sadi was the most daring and they tapped the disk that came out of their letter when it suddenly came to life full of light.
A hologram appearing showing an up-close shot of-
"All Might!?" most of them shouted.
"Booyah! I am here as a projection now!" The All Might hologram proclaimed before pulling back and showing more of his body and what looked like a game show background.
"I understand that you are likely shocked to see myself currently, however with my retirement from full time work I saw not remain idle!" All Might announced holding up a hand that was pointing upward.
"Guys you don't think... " Awa-Kun muttered but he was cut off by the hologram.
"For I shall now be a member of the U.A. staff and shall be working with the rest of your teachers as one of the teaching assistants!" All Might proudly told them, confirming the thought they all had.
*All Might... a teaching assistant?* Ochaco couldn't help repeating in her mind.
"However, you can learn more about that later, right now though I'm sure that you are far more interested in your results," All Might said redirecting their attention to a screen next to him in the video.
"You did quite well on the specialized written test made just for the both of you Young Fumikage and Young Sadi," All Might happily told everyone showing the two scores, seventy-five for Fumi and sixty-two for Sadi.
Happy whistle-like chirps coming from Sadi once they saw their score.
"And you did even better during the physical, collecting a total of thirty-six points alone from the robots the two of you destroyed with your impressive teamwork." All Might proudly told them showing a scene of Fumi dashing through a small group of 1-pointers with a lot of finesse to avoid the limbs and Sadi hitting the buttons.
Ochaco and Awa-Kun both cheered seeing them in action, making Fumi's feathers poof up from embarrassment.
"And that's not all! For when many might not spare a thought towards those they consider their rivals, the both of you went out of your way to help your peers despite there being no given reason to," All Might explained before showing a clip of Fumi around a corner and Sadi slipping through the shadows and pushing another guy out of the way of a laser.
"Awe, look at our sweet chickadees." Aditi-San cooed further embarrassing Fumi and this time Sadi as well.
"As any respectable hero school would, we took notice of such actions as they are often the ones of those worthy of being a hero, and will of course reward you for them with a generous number of rescue points." All Might told them.
"Rescue points?" Jiji muttered.
"All in all, the two of you earned twenty-four rescue points from those you've helped during the exam, and all together the two of you have netted yourselves a score of sixty points, granting the both of you eighth place in the physical exam!" All Might announced showing a score board with the top ten examinees with some fanfare going off.
Fumi and Sadi both looked at the hologram shocked while Ochaco gasped.
"Awa-Kun you and Jiji are up there too!" Ochaco exclaimed pointing to the board.
"Fuck yeah! I got third!" Awa-Kun shouted laughing.
Jiji flushed but accepted a hug from Ochaco and his mom.
"Naturally the two of you have passed and we will be honored to welcome you both to U.A. to get started on your hero academia! You shall find the details for your enrollment and to arrange for your things to be moved to the dorms listed in the letter along with this projection." All Might congratulated them, clapping his hands.
"I look forward to teaching you both this coming April, I shall see you then Young Fumikage and Sadi." All Might said bowing before the hologram stopped.
Bakugou smirked and elbowed Fumi.
"Did better than I expected cuckoos." Bakugou admitted, a stained squawk coming from Fumi as he buried his head in his hands, Sadi though hugged Bakugou with a happy chirp.
"Not as good as you did, mister first place!" Sadi chirped back.
Bakugou protested somewhat but just stewed there once his mother joined in.
"Do you think there's a special message for each of us on these disks?" Awa-Kun asked looking at the one that came out of his letter.
Ochaco felt her stomach drop as she looked towards hers and she swallowed.
Jiji of course noticed this and thankfully changed the topic.
"We can watch them later, let's see which of the classes we're in." Jiji suggested digging for his letter and unfolding it "I'm in 1-A." he stated.
"We are too!" Sadi exclaimed "And Bakugou!" they added after stealing Bakugou's letter from him.
Bakugou snatching it back with a soft growl.
Ochaco opened her letter with some hesitance, even if she didn't think they'd send a hologram to those who failed the exam there was always a chance it was for the gen-ed course instead.
"I passed and in 1-A!" Ochaco told them greatly relieved after she worked up the nerve to read hers.
"Damn, guess I'm the only one in B then." Awa-Kun said somewhat disappointed after reading his letter.
Jiji placed a hand on his shoulder.
"It won't be that bad Awa-Kun, you'll only be a building away which is much closer than we are now." Jiji assured him.
"I know," Awa-Kun snorted "And Zuri will probably let us have sleepovers if we ask." Awa-Kun pointed out.
"Enough talk! All of our kids got into their dream school! bring out the damn cake Inky!" Mitsuki-San loudly and proudly exclaimed with her arms in the air.
Inko-San complied and brought over a cake while their various parents pulled her friends away to congratulate them individually.
Ochaco's parents included as both her parents hugged her tightly.
"We are so proud of you." Her mom whispered.
Ochaco smiled and burning her face in her arm.
"I know." she whispered back.
The envelope was heavier than Hitoshi thought it would be.
But part of that might be because of Hitoshi's certainty it would be one of rejection since his letter containing his gen-ed acceptance was just as heavy in his hands.
Hitoshi walked back to the house with the mail in hand and the normal dread of crossing the threshold hadn't left him choked like it usually did.
"Hey Toshi! Did they finally come in?" his brother asked, probably the only one that was also interested in his results given he arranged to come back in secret a couple days ago from college to be here when he got his results back.
Hitoshi hesitated at the entrance of the kitchen, his brother looking up at him and away from one of his textbooks as soon as he walked passed the threshold.
His mother busy making a snack for his baby sisters, Chō and Suzume on each side of her so she didn't turn around, but his father had looked up from where he was reading the paper.
Hitoshi nodded, only walking in to leave the rest of the mail with his father.
"Cool, do you want to open them now with us or?" Atsushi asked him, jabbing a thumb back towards the stairs leading to the stairs.
Just the thought of reading the rejection out here with everyone made his chest feel even tighter.
Hitoshi motioned towards the stairs with his head.
"Okay, but come and tell us as soon as you're done reading them alright?" Atsushi requested.
Hitoshi nodded and left the kitchen quickly, the feeling of being someplace that he shouldn't be fading away as he climbed the steps back up to his room.
He closed the door of his room and leaned back on it with a sigh.
Hitoshi walked over to his bed and sat down on it. He considered leaving his rejection letter unopened and just opening his gen-ed course letter.
But he must have felt masochistic to himself since he ultimately opened the letter with his hero course results, knowing the answer there would only be a thing that he'd look regretfully on in the future.
The disc he found inside made his thoughts stop though.
Had... someone left a coaster in his envelope by mistake?
Hitoshi turned the thin circle over before it started beeping and Hitoshi dropped the whatever it was.
Then light came out of the little disc and formed a-
A hologram of All Might?
"Booyah! I am here as a projection now!" All Might greeted moving his body back showing off a colorful background before Hitoshi could gather his wits All Might continue speaking "I understand that you are likely shocked to see myself currently, however with my retirement from full time work I saw not remain idle!"
"For I shall now be a member of the U.A. staff and shall be working with the rest of your teachers as one of the teaching assistants!" All Might proudly told him.
*All Might's going to be at U.A?* Hitoshi thought distantly.
"However, you can learn more about that later, right now though I'm sure that you are far more interested in your results," All Might declared, bringing Hitoshi's mind back to earth and he slumped, knowing what he was about to be told.
"For the written exam you did incredibly well Young Shinsou! You were in the top ten percent of the examinees getting nearly every question correct!" All Might told him, and part of Hitoshi felt proud of that but knew what would be said next.
"On the physical, while you weren't the fittest, only able to get yourself a total of nineteen points from destroying robots," All Might explained a touch more demurely.
Hitoshi bowed his head, waiting to hear the rejection finally for such a poor score.
"You did show remarkable teamwork as even before the start of the exam you found yourself a partner that would complement you!" All Might said instead making Hitoshi's head snap back up and he watched a clip of himself and Uraraka taking down one of the 3-pointers.
"And if that wasn't enough! In the wake of disaster, you didn't fail to act and rushed to aid those in need," All Might stated, the clip switching to him going through the rubble with Uraraka.
"But most importantly, you did something absolutely extraordinary Young Shinsou, something that I think that will be best explained by someone else," All Might told him before the hologram changed to show Present Mic in a hallway.
"Present Mic, sir!" a Familiar voice called, and Hitoshi watched even more surprised as Uraraka's form rushed into the hall and appeared on the hologram.
What was she-
"I want to give my points to Shinsou! The boy I worked with during the exam!" Uraraka declared knocking Hitoshi completely off guard.
"What?" Hitoshi rasped watching on in disbelief.
"If he hadn't used his quirk when he did, I would have been seriously hurt, died even if I landed wrong! So, if there is any way for you to give him some of my points to him I want you to do it!" Uraraka proclaimed, her face set and ready to argue if necessary if Present Mic refused.
Hitoshi couldn't do anything but stare, his mind racing with his confusion.
He... he used his quirk on her, took away her autonomy and here she was fighting for him.
Why?
The picture of Uraraka Shrunk and pulled away revealing All Might again.
"The fact you saved this girl could have gone completely unnoticed had she not come to us about it given the lack of visible signs of your quirk Young Shinsou," All Might informed him.
"However, with this great deed in mind we could do nothing less than reward you with rescue points my boy." All Might exclaimed proudly.
*Rescue points?* Hitoshi thought, his heart twisting with uneasy hope.
"A grand total of thirty points in fact! Bringing your score up to forty-nine Young Shinsou." All Might told him showing a score board with his name rising up the ranks and placing...
Just below the point threshold shown on the screen and tied with another student.
And all of his hope was crushed painfully, and Hitoshi balled his fists, hanging his head with a scoff.
Of course, even with all of this he wouldn't even have a chance at last place.
"Which would not have been enough to get you into the hero course, but there is one more thing at play in this exam my boy," All Might said.
Hitoshi blinked wondering what else All Might would tell him.
"There is a single point which can be given to one person by a member of staff after reviewing the written exam essays turned in by all of you, think of it as a personal recommendation from the staff if you'd like," All Might detailed for him.
Hitoshi felt his breath caught in his throat.
"A point that was given to you Young Shinsou," All Might told him.
Then, Hitoshi's name went over the line and into thirty-sixth place.
"So, with a total of fifty points to your name Young Shinsou, it is with great pride that I welcome someone with so much potential to U.A's hero course." All Might stated, his words ones that made Hitoshi wonder if he was dreaming.
Hitoshi's wide eyes couldn't be peeled away from his name on the score board, his heart racing in his chest.
"You will find the details of your enrollment and for having your things moved to U.A. in the letter that came along with this recording. I look forward to being one of your teachers this coming April, until then Young Shinsou." All Might said finishing the message with a bow.
The hologram clicked off a second later.
Hitoshi sat frozen for a few seconds, then he scrambled to find the letter and unfold it so that he could read it.
Then he read it a second time, and a third... by the tenth time it sunk in for Hitoshi that this was real, and this wasn't some joke or a dream.
Tears built up in his eyes and Hitoshi pushed himself up and out of his room.
Hitoshi numbly walked down the stairs and back to the kitchen where the rest of his family was, his letter held tightly to his chest.
"Hey Toshi-y so how'd you-" Atsushi lightly asked only to stop and get up from where he was sitting when he saw Hitoshi was crying "Hey, Hitoshi it's not a big deal you can-" Atsushi tried to say but Hitoshi cut him off.
"I got in." Hitoshi told him.
He ignored the way his parents flinched upon hearing his voice, Atsushi's focus was completely on him.
"You got in?" Atsushi asked, his voice on the edge of hopeful.
"I… got in." Hitoshi repeated, his voice shaking.
Atsushi immediately wrapped his arms around him in a hug spun around with Hitoshi crushed to his chest
The loud and hearty laugh of his brother in his ears.
"I am so proud of you!" Atsushi told him and Hitoshi could see a massive grin on his face when his brother pulled away, his joy for Hitoshi clear as day.
"You're going to be a hero!" Atsushi exclaimed.
"I'm going to be a hero." Hitoshi muttered, burying his face in Atsushi's chest so he wouldn't have to see his parents faces after he spoke again, just wanting to bask in the warmth of Atsushi's happiness for him.
Because he did it.
Even if it was by the skin of his teeth.
And maybe he only passed because someone took pity on him.
But he was going to have a chance to be a hero.
And no matter what he wasn't going to let anyone take it away from him.
The famous hell year begins...
