Chapter 12

Life in King's Landing after the incident with the Baratheon Lordlord and the King became a rather tense place to be. Everyone truly believed the King would punish such insolence from the Baratheon lord with death; that was, after all, what the previous King would have done. Yet, king Rhaegar never did, not once. A new monarch ruled, and Rhaegar wanted to be different from his father in every way possible. However, Rhaegar also wanted to let people know he won't tolerate uprisings or rebellions. Robert Baratheon came to King's Landing to give his loyalty to the King and to beg for forgiveness. A show for everyone to know Robert was still loyal to the crown.

However, for Hawke, Robert still seemed a bit resentful that the woman he loved still favored Rhaegar more than him. Lyanna and Robert weren't a couple that would last a year together or one that would have happy years ahead of them, but that was, in Hawke's humble opinion, a bit stupid to put two people like that together. But arranged marriages and nobility always do what they always do best. Make everyone unhappy. Lyanna's infatuation with Rhaegar and Robert's infatuation with her would poison both of them. Also, during the last few days, Rhaegar seemed to want to evade Lyanna's sight. The Northerner woman was still pursuing him; all the while, Robert watched, gritting his teeth.

Hawke had no intention of watching either of them dig their tomb. It wasn't her business, nor she bothered to know about their future disastrous lives together. However, Hawke had to admit that watching Elia keep Lyanna on a short leash was quite funny. The Queen was losing patience with the young girl, and she was showing how much of Martell's temper she truly had. One day, Elia had enough and took Lyanna with her to have a private chat. After that, Lyanna got the message clear and kept her hands behind her back while glancing at the King every time she saw him.

Thankfully, Robert and Lyanna's wedding would take place elsewhere, away from the capital. And Rhaegar and his family breathed in relief with that. They wished the best for the Stark girl and forgot about everything else. Will Robert and Lyanna find common ground for love? They didn't know or care.

Hawke's focus was on the King's mother, Rhaella, whose last stages of pregnancy seemed to have taken a toll on her poor health. And Hawke put priorities on the poor woman. Yet, it seemed as if she wasn't the only pregnant. Elia began showing signs of being pregnant a fortnight after what happened with Rober' Baratheon, which excited the Queen and filled her with happiness and worry. Her last birth almost killed her, and everyone was concerned that this one would be no different.

It became clear that some people wished for Elia to have difficulties and to, if possible, die during birth. Tywin Lannister, while not saying anything, has not looked away from such a possibility, and neither has his daughter. Bad for them since Hawke would not let either die during her watch. Hawke became a new habitant of King's Landing. Always watchful of the young ones of the royal family. She didn't speak with anyone outside, and neither did she interact with the servants. But the dragon lady knew everything going around to a rather scary degree. Tywin Lannister decided not to anger her and chose to play the long game, much to Cersei's dismay.

Cersei was set to marry the only other Lord worth anything. And to everyone, surprise, and shock. The Warden of the Vale and the Warden of the West agreed on something. Lord Arryn wasn't Tywin's first choice, not even by a long shot. If fact, Tywin didn't believe the old man deserved his daughter. But, there weren't eligible suitors that he saw fit at all. It was either Prince Oberyn Martell or the Lord of the Vale. And Oberyn wasn't one to be tied down by marriage. However, the old Lord of the Vale was still a far better suitor to Cersei than anyone else, and so, Tywin and Jon Arryn came to some understanding.

Hawke recalled hearing the rather loud discussions between Lord Hand and his daughter. A rather amusing sight. Yet, Tywin needed to be a man of patience. However, he did tell his daughter that, while she wouldn't be able to be Queen, maybe his grandchild would. And the faster she wed and bred, the better.

Ah, what a loving father. Hawke thought sarcastically.

Still, Elia was thankful to get rid of the annoying daughter of Lord's Hand. Hawke agreed since stress wasn't good for both pregnant women. And oddly enough, King's Landing became boring for a few months. Amazing what having a competent king could do to a city, let alone a nation. Rhaegar was truly making a difference. Slowly, but he was making it.

Hawke also believed that flying around in her dragon form does help a bit.

But then, it happened. Rhaella's birth came sooner than expected, and to say it was a mess would be an understatement. Hawke has seen her fair share of disastrous births as a healer. Some more than others, but Rhaella's birth was truly something else. Hawke was, thankfully, more powerful now; otherwise, the poor woman would have died in a very painful way. It took a lot of patience from everyone. Especially since neither Rhaegar nor Hawke wanted the Pycell's dirty hands near the Rhaella.

However, Hawke's power was also a weakness. She noticed that it could complicate things if she wasn't too careful. It wasn't just healing everything with a snap of her fingers. That wasn't how healing worked. Hawke had to ensure everything was in order and done with the utmost care.

She couldn't just simply heal poor Rhaella. No, Hawke had to ensure Rhaella's body could endure such procedures and rest.

But after a few long and tedious hours, Hawke had to close every single wound patiently and heal Rhaella's shattered womb and bleeding insides. But it was finally over, and Rhaella survived while her mortal and fragile body was pushed to the edge. She held a smile as she carried her daughter in her arms.

"Daenerys Targaryen," Rhaella named her daughter, born during the most unforgiven storm.

The entire royal family was thankful and joyful for the newest member of the Targaryen family. Especially, Rhaegar, who had to admit that having a younger sister did make him quite happy.

Hawke knew that feeling all too well. And while happy to be of help to the family. She was feeling quite alone. And another thing was that Hawke's love for children and watching the cute baby in her mother's embrace brings to light. Hawke's desperation to be a mother too. She doesn't even know she can achieve that in her current state. Nevertheless, Hawke showed nothing. And patiently waited for Elia's soon birth.

And it came, and it was thankfully less messy than Rhaella. But it was proof that Elia wasn't as healthy as many would think. Still, while surviving the birth of her daughter, Visenya. Hawke told the Queen what another pregnancy would do to her if she wasn't careful. Elia took the advice and promised to be more cautious soon. But Hawke did tell Rhaegar that he also has to make sure to take care of his wife. It takes two to dance. Hopefully, they would listen to her bits of advice.

However, now that both Rhaella and Elia were alive and healthy. It was time for Hawke to move on. There were plenty of things she needed to do.

"So, you're truly going, lady Amell," Elia's voice was tender and filled with sadness. It was hard to believe that she had grown so close to the dragon lady in the last months. A rather surprising set of events, to be sure, but one Elia was thankful for experiencing. Lady Amell was a rather surprising kind and quite amusing individual. But the Queen still remembers that the Red Emerald Dragon was incredibly powerful and didn't follow the same rules as a human would, making things quite weird for Elia.

The Queen has seen firsthand how Lady Amell behaves around people other than the royal family. She ignored them to the point of not even noticing they were there. It was funny and quite intimidating. It was clear that lady Amell cared too little about the Game of Thrones going around. She isn't patient enough to listen to noble plotting something behind the scenes. A power, Elia envied.

"We are going to miss you," Elia said, watching how Hawke tried to calm Rhaenys down.

"I must," Hawke replied, chuckling at how Rhaenys kept hugging her legs, begging her to stay. "There are questions that need to be answered. Not only for myself but for all of us."

Elia didn't know what to do or think about that question itself. The Long Night. A tale told to children to behave. She had heard it before, never truly believed it, like any other person would. But she was listing such words from a living dragon that could change forms, throw lightning from her hand, and speak with spirits about a possible future doomsday. Well, Elia now truly believed whatever tale this world had to offer.

"Hopefully, I'll find out more that will allow us to be prepared for whatever will come," Hawke stated softly, patting Rhaenys' back.

"Please! Please don't go!" Rhaenys cried. "Mother! Please don't let her go!"

Elia sighed deeply. "Rhaenys, please, dear."

Hawke realized that saying goodbyes to the little children was incredibly hard. When she went to say her goodbyes to Rhaella. Viserys was crying as hard as Rhaenys. Even little Daenerys, who didn't seem to know what was going on, was truly following her big brother's step and started to cry as loud as him.

"I don't want to! I want her to stay with me!" Rhaenys cried. "Can we make her stay?! Can father force her?!"

"Rhaenys Targaryen!" Elia exclaimed, outraged by her daughter's behavior. Hawke found it endearing and a bit cute. Maybe she wasn't truly seeing it by what it was since, in her eyes, a child doesn't truly know what they say. However, Elia knew about the Targaryen's madness. She wanted to ensure her children didn't inherit such a curse. So, when she heard the voice of Rhaenys demanding such a thing, it scared Elia.

"We do not speak like that! Understood, you lady?!" Elia's voice woke little Aegon, resting on his crib, and made Visenya, the newborn, wail. Yet, Elia wanted to ensure her daughter understood that what she did was wrong.

"Lady Amell has been nothing but a good companion of our family. And it's not proper for us to demand anything of her anymore. If you care for lady Amell and wish for her to return safely in the future. You will act accordingly as a princess of the royal family. Understood?"

Rhaenys quickly shut her whining and looked down, ashamed. Hawke was even intimidated by Elia's angry voice. It was strange to hear such a soft-spoken woman behave in such a manner. But then again, Elia was a mother, and motherhood truly brings that fire out.

"Do you understand, Rhaenys?" Elia called, now more gently and softly. Rhaenys sobbed slightly but nodded.

"Yes, mother," she replied, still not letting go of Hawke's oversize hand.

Elia smiled and approached her daughter, slowly stroking her hair. "I know you like lady Amell and don't want her to go. But it's necessary. Alright?"

Rhaenys frowned slowly since she wasn't sure why Hawke was leaving but knew it was important. "But... is Lady Amell going to visit us? She's going to come back?"

"Of course, I will, it may take a while, but I'll come back," Hawke added softly. "And what did I say? About your dreams?"

Rhaenys perked up and smiled at her. "That you will visit me there!"

Hawke smiled and patted her head. "Indeed."

"Your promise!" Rhaenys exclaimed, and while some tears were visible in her eyes. She held a quite bright face.

"I do," Hawke chuckled.

Rhaenys then smiled widely. "Then...! When you come back...! Please marry me!"

"Rhaenys!" Elia exclaimed, shocked.

"Then we can be together! And you can take me with you!"

"Rhaenys, stop!"

Hawke just stared at the small girl, who looked very determined and honest. It was cute, in Hawke's opinion, a childish and innocent dream. A game, that's why Hawke simply nodded, kissing the small girl's forehead.

Ah, children are truly so cute! Hawke thought happily.

"I'm so sorry for my daughter's behavior," Elia apologized, embarrassed.

"Do not worry about it, Queen Elia," Hawke replied gently. "Rhaenys' words are of a child. Nothing more."

Hawke stated, not knowing how serious Rhaenys truly was. Hawke thought nothing more of it and waved her goodbyes. It would take years before Rhaenys' words meant anything. But when they do, Hawke would know all about the Targaryen's obsession.

Hawke approached the King's chamber, where all his work takes place, and saw the Kingsguard standing at the door. Ser Barristan and Ser Gerold stared at her with a modicum of respect and weariness. Hawke has grown to respect the members of the Kingsguard. They were all quite a group of loyal men. And Hawke has always been someone who appreciated that type of individual. Loyalty was hard to come by in any world. And those who give their life with that idea in mind deserve respect.

"I wish to tell the king about my departure," Hawke stated, glancing a both of them. "Is he free?"

Ser Barristan nodded slowly. "He is," the knight stated. He slowly opened the door and allowed her to enter. There, she saw Rhaegar talking with the Hand of the King. Tywin Lannister, who only glanced at her. He tried to look taller but failed. Hawke easily towered him. However, Tywin seemed rather glad that she was leaving King's Landing.

Hawke just huffed at him. He was quite a funny man trying to push away about his class.

"Lord Hand," Hawke only said as Tywin's gaze didn't change.

"Lady Amell," he replied stiffly.

"That would be all, lord Tywin," Rhaegar said, and Tywin seemed to want to say something but remained quiet and left quickly.

Rhaegar sighed and looked at Hawke, who looked amused at the way Tywin looked as he left the room.

"Your hand seemed to be quiet... joyful this morning."

Rhaegar only breathed deeply, sitting down, the morning was only starting, but he was incredibly tired already.

"I will not use the word joyfully when referring to Tywin Lannister. But I understand why you say that," Rhaegar stated while taking a sip of his wine. "He is quite... happy for our future arrangements."

"Oh, promise him a little princess or prince?" Hawke stated, and she was right. Rhaegar made an uncomfortable face proving she was right.

"Aegon would wed Cersei's daughter when she has one and when they come of age," Rhaegar said, yet he didn't sound quite pleased with it. "I need allies, and as much as I hate it. Tywin Lannister is the most powerful Lord in Westeros. And having him on my side would ensure that, at least, we can work together."

I remember now. I truly despise nobility and the political game. Hawke thought, irritated.

"Work together, eh? From what I see, Lord Tywin only cares for his legacy," Hawke pointed out, and Rhaegar nodded slowly.

"Yet, that makes him quite easy to predict," Rhaegar smiled. "Tywin's obsession with his legacy and making the Lannister name one should be respected and feared. Allows me to play with his ego."

Hawke had to give it to the young King. Rhaegar wasn't a naive little human. He was smart and knew the game. Rhaegar's cunning and ability to play the long game were admirable. Hawke knew she didn't need to worry about him. Rhaegar was a capable leader and understood what to do.

"Ego-stroking your hand, quite the move," Hawke noted, making Rhaegar chuckle.

"I have heard the whispers around. They believe I am meek and gullible. They think my rule is weak, and no doubt many would try to take advantage of it," Rhaegar's purple eyes then became sharp and dangerous. "And I'll let them believe what they want. They are giving me all I want without them knowing. I am playing in the darkness."

Hawke then realized what Rhaegar had tried to do. "Trying to let others be the focus? To take the responsibility or the blame? And easy to eliminate if they are too loud or easy to control? Quite deceitful, don't you think?"

Rhaegar smiled and could see a different person there. "I grew up here. Only kings survive if they are careful. The rest would try to deceive me, lie to me or manipulate my family or me. I will not allow it."

Hawke understood Rhaegar's position. It was a place where the weak died and the strong lived. There was no middle ground.

"You disagree?" Rhaegar asked with an honest tone.

"No," Hawke replied. "Good Kings are needed here. But they also need to be able to tackle any problem in any way possible and move around the snake pit."

Rhaegar nodded, breathing deeply and showing how thankful he was to hear such words. "Glad to hear it."

Rhaegar then looked at Hawke, and for a moment, nothing was said. "Lady Amell, are you going to Old Valyria?" Rhaegar finally asked.

"I'll start there," Hawke answered. "I wish to learn more about the Long Night and Valyrian magic."

It was incredibly important for Hawke to learn everything she could about that type of ancient magic. The Valyrian's ability to control dragons, or what they considered dragons, among many other things like their special type of metal, named Valyrian steel, intrigued her. However, Hawke wanted to know exactly what she was dealing with and how it could manifest in the Targaryen children.

"Also, I would like to know about these dreams you're having," Hawke asked, and Rhaegar hummed. "What do they look like?"

"It's like ice... cold," Rhaegar whispered, trying to make sense of it. "As if I am frozen in place. Then... I started to hear whispers, and suddenly I was in front of a large door. I don't know where I saw that, but it's an old door. Then I hear a loud scream, and I wake up."

Hawke nodded slowly. "How many times do you have this dream?"

"It's hard to say... sometimes, once a week. Other times I spend months without it. But it comes back, sometimes different."

Hawke wondered if demons could have the same power in this world. If they could speak through dreams, and if that was the case. Then she was worried.

"King Rhaegar, you must not listen to those whispers or screams," Hawke warned, and Rhaegar looked at her curiously.

"Demons could be lurking in dreams; giving them a moment to lure you in could be the doom of your soul," Hawke stated, and it seemed to have resonated with Rhaegar. "Then can take control of your body if you're not careful."

"I... I'll try my best," he replied quickly. "But can they do that?"

Hawke was curious to know if that could happen in this world. Rhaegar wasn't a mage, but she had seen her fair share of craziness. And since she didn't know much about this world. It may very well be possible.

"I don't know," Hawke said. "This world's magic is almost inexistent. Normally you would need to be a magical being for it to happen. You're not. But, nevertheless, be careful."

"Could my children be in danger?" Rhaegar asked as Hawke took a step back to think about it. She has seen a remnant of magic inside them. So the possibility was there.

"They have sparks of magic inside them, but it's... not awakened as of now," Hawke said and noticed Rhaegar contemplating his words.

"What would it take for their magic to... awaken?"

Hawke frowned at him but admitted that she was as curious as him. "I don't know... that's why I am going to Valyria. Whatever I find there, it could prove useful."

Rhaegar's thoughts were focused on a rather different matter, and Hawke needed to figure out what exactly could be. The King then sighed deeply before standing up and walking towards her.

"Nevertheless, lady Amell, first, let me thank you for all you have done. Not only did you help us evade a potential war born out of misinformation. But you saved my wife's and mother's lives. And my children," Rhaegar then offered his hand, offering a strange medallion. A sort of pendant. "There are no words to express my eternal gratitude. But please accept this."

"This is...?" Hawke saw a strange figure thing. It has the figure of a dragon on it. A coin? Hawke thought.

"A Valyrian pendant. It may look like a coin, but it is a trinket. It's been passed down in our family. Only a few know it even exists now. But I want to give it to you. A show of good faith and of our friendship."

Hawke hummed, looking at the quite pretty and small coin. It looked like the size of her nail. But took it, for it meant.

"I appreciate it, king Rhegar."

Rhaegar smiled at her softly. "You're welcome, and I wish you the best of luck. And hopefully, when you come back... some questions will be answered."

"I hope the same."

Hawke gave a brief and rather small bow to Rhaegar, and before she was leaving, she turned around and stared at the King for one last time. "Do be careful... a young king. Hopefully, you will be what this kingdom needs."

"I hope to live to your expectations, my lady."

"My opinion doesn't matter. It's your family's and your people's opinion that will decide how you're remembered."

And with that, Hawke left, saying no more.

Hawke didn't wait to say more. No, she quickly moved away from the castle and, ignoring all stares, jumped high above the Red Keep, transforming mid-air and letting one powerful roar. The Red Emerald Dragon flew away across the Narrow Sea.

Essos, here I come.

Hawke thought, watching the vast horizon before her. It was time to learn more and, maybe, create some chaos along the way.

Also this is an Autors note~

I am saving money to buy myself a new PC! Since my laptop is on life support.

But I don't know what to buy. Some people tell me a Pre-Build is worth it, while others tell me to build it myself.

I don't know... I don't want a super machine, just a decent one that will help me with my work and some games; I will not lie. So, my question is, is a Pre-build worth it?
