Chpater 6 Walking a fine line…

Dipper and the group were walking for hours. To most of the group, walking in these plains seemed longer than walking in the forest. Elise, a.k.a. Pacifica, was feeling exhausted to the point to where she fell to her knees…

"Come on. We can't stop here." Amanda said as she helped Elise up.

"I'm…sorry." Pacifica said in a tired voice.

"Need some help?" Dipper offered.

"I will be alright…Thank you though." Pacifica said with a small smile which Candy saw and pushed her little over the edge.

"What? Weak little Elise can't even walk without help? Why are you even here in the first place?" Candy yelled in frustration.

"Excu-" Elise began to retort until Dipper placed a hand on her shoulder to quickly quiet her before she gave away her disguise.

"Candy. Don't you think that's a little harsh?" Dipper said.

"I agree with Dipper. What's the matter?" Grenda asked as she tried to place a hand on Candy's shoulder but was immediately shrugged off in anger.

"Nearly this whole trip we had to babysit this girl! Sure, she gave us these silver potions to help us fight werewolves but other than that she's been completely useless! Instead of helping us fight those zombies, she ran. Instead of carrying her own weight like the rest of us, she was coddled! And all she does is hang all over Dipper like a damn security blanket!" Candy shouted in jealousy but it was starting to make Pacifica cry.

"Candy! You need to calm down!" Amanda demanded.

"Let's take a break everyone. It's clear that this long journey and the heat is starting to take its toll." Bovard said but Candy just walked away from the group in her anger. Grenda followed, in order to try to calm Candy down and figure out what her problem was.

Elise left in the other direction and Dipper wanted to follow but Amanda stopped him with her hand and shook her head telling him that it wasn't the time. Amanda instead went with Elise to comfort her and to try to smooth things over. Meanwhile, Dipper was alone with Bovard…

"Little ladies' charmer, aren't you? Haha." Bovard joked.

"I don't understand, to be honest." Dipper said.

"Your great uncle was the same way." Bovard stated which peaked Dipper's curiosity.

"You know who my great uncle was?" Dipper asked.

"Yes. Stanford Pines. He was once your village's mage and I studied with him and his brother at the magic academy when we were younger. Stanford had all the attention from the ladies at the academy but never reciprocated their feelings. However, regardless of the Stanford's rejections, he was envied by his brother, Stanley." Bovard explained.

"So…What happened?" Dipper asked not sure what to get out of this history lesson.

"Oh…Nothing. Stanley was jealous but never did anything rash to his brother. What I'm trying to get at, you are more like your great uncle Stanford than you know. Even if you don't have his magical knowledge. Just follow your heart and everything will work itself out." Bovard said.

Meanwhile with Candy and Grenda…

.

.

.

"Candy! Wait up!" Grenda shouted as she tried to catch up with her friend.

"Leave me alone!" Candy shouted while she kept walking away with her face was full of tears.

"We can't leave the group! It's not safe!" Grenda shouted as she finally catches up and stopped Candy by turning her around to face her.

"Don't you understand!..." Candy shouted in frustration.

"…I do. But we can't be selfish right now. Especially on a quest like this one where danger can come at any time." Grenda said trying to calm down Candy.

"What does he see in her anyways? We been together the longest and trained with one another. We even looked out for each other and helped him when he needed it." Candy said wiping away her tears.

"Listen Candy… I know I'm more muscle than brains but I know you like Dipper. However, despite this, Dipper is his own person. As far as Elise goes, I get the feeling she isn't use to this kind of life. Dipper probably caught on to that too and is only being friendly to her." Grenda said.

"That doesn't explain why she's here! It's like you said, danger could come at any time. She's not cut out for this and is starting to drag us down. It's worse when Dipper looks at her instead of me!" Candy shouted in frustrated jealousy.

"Well maybe instead of crying about it, why don't you try to get him to look at you instead? Show him how tough you are compared to her. He already relies on you and I'm sure he won't fond so much on Elise once he finally sees the real you." Grenda said.

"…So, what you are trying to tell me…is that I still have a chance?" Candy said starting to get her hopes up.

"That's not exactly what I wa-" Grenda said until Candy hugged her.

"Thank you Grenda. I know now what I have to do." Candy said as she broke the quick hug and rushed back to where the others were.

"Great…What have I started?" Grenda said to herself as she shook her head.

Back at Piedmont Village…

.

.

.

The villagers, David, and Mabel were hard at work rebuilding the village. Though they all faced great loss, the villagers were determined to get back on their feet once again. Neighboring towns and farms let aid as well. However, once mid-day came, everyone took a break for lunch. David though, was approached by the same courier that he sent yesterday…

"Alex? What are you doing back so soon?" David asked.

"Well, my lord. I rode to the capital as you bade me to. However, I wasn't able to post your request for mercenary aid." The courier, Alex, said.

"What!? Are you telling me the capital rejected our request!?" David said as he started to get angry.

"N-No my lord. Quite the opposite actually. I was immediately approached by a mercenary group…However…" Alex said as he hesitated with a bit of concern.

"What are you going on about?" David said until the mercenary group suddenly appeared in front of him but David was baffled beyond words on whom they were…

"Greetings! I'm Jeff, leader of the gnome mercenary band!" Jeff greeted with confidence.

"Alex…What is this?..." David said with irritation in his voice.

"I-I'm sorry my lord! It's just…they seemed so eager to help and they agreed to help our village immediately." Alex said.

"Hey. Don't you underestimate us! You have no idea what we're capable of. The gnomes are a powerful race!" Jeff said.

"Sigh…Fine! Could you at least enlighten me of what you are capable of?" David inquired.

"Surly! As you just seen, my people are able to use magic with nature. We can conceal ourselves, make illusions, control the ground and trees, and sense mana from all living things." Jeff explained.

"Well, all that sounds useful, but are you willing and able to defend our village from all threats?" David asked getting more to the point.

"Of course, but we do expect compensation for our efforts." Jeff said.

"Right. I'm not sure if Alex explained the payment but we are willing-" David said until Jeff held up a hand.

"We don't want human money. We require more basic needs." Jeff said.

"What do you want then?" David asked.

"Grape jam and mushrooms!" Jeff said proudly and the other gnomes cheered in agreement which led David and Alex even more dumbfounded.

"If you and your people can provide us with a monthly supply, we are all yours!" Jeff said.

"Alright…Then…I guess we have a deal. As strange as it is." David said as he shook the little gnome's hand.

Suddenly, Jeff and the rest of the gnomes saw Mabel walking by and they all stared in awe. Then David cleared his throat to get Jeff's attention away from his daughter.

"Is there something the matter, Mr. Jeff?" David said in an aggravated voice.

"Who is that?" Jeff asked.

"That would be my daughter, Mabel." David answered.

"Could she be our queen?" Jeff asked.

"Excuse me?" David asked.

"You see, us gnomes have a lifelong goal. From the moment we are born and when we group up to form bands, we search for a queen to pledge our fidelity to." Jeff said.

"Wouldn't any woman do? Why my daughter?" David asked.

"No sir! Only a strong young woman, enriched with mana, and has the potential to become a mighty monarch is worthy to become our queen regardless of race." Jeff explained.

"…Well, I'm not a fan of men's advances on my daughter. However, she's proven she can take care of herself and has the use of magic to protect herself further. So, I'm not too worried. However, if I find out you hurt her in any way…" David said.

"NO NO NO! You misunderstood Sir David. We only want to follow and serve her. We would never bring harm to Lady Mabel!" Jeff said.

"Good. In that case, you are free to try to make her your queen. But I must warn you…She won't be so agreeable." David said with a smirk knowing the gnomes would come to regret their newfound goal.

Meanwhile with Elise…

.

.

.

"Milady! Please stop!" Amanda called out knowing they were too far for the others to hear or even see them right now.

"I'm done Amanda! All I wanted was to help and I get treated like this!" Pacifica shouted in frustration and with tears in her eyes while continuing to distance herself from everyone.

"I understand but this is reckless! You cannot go back to the capital by foot and with no protection. If you die, you won't be able to help anyone! Please reconsider this!" Amanda shouted.

Suddenly she saw an abandoned town which Pacifica was about to walk into. Amanda rushed to Pacifica's side as they both entered the town…

"W-What happened here?" Pacifica asked as she looked around the town which was in shambles.

"An attack most likely. We should really get back to the others Milady and-" Amanda said until both were startled by a nasty growl.

"Princess get back!" Amanda shouted as she drew her bow.

Suddenly, a werewolf emerged slowly out of an abandoned house with foam dripping heavily from its mouth. Luckily, Amanda already smeared her arrow tips with the silver potion that Pacifica gave her and the others. However, she wasn't firing her bow just yet. Mainly, she wanted to ease away from the great beast with Pacifica following her lead. With each slow step, they tried to back away but the werewolf followed them in matching pace.

"Please listen Pacifica. I will draw the werewolf's attention. When I do, you run like hell back to the others and get their help." Amanda instructed.

"B-But…I…" Pacifica stuttered.

"DO IT NOW!" Amanda shouted as she let loose the arrow and ran another direction into the abandon town.

The werewolf dodged the attack but sprinted after Amanda. Pacifica had no choice but run back to Dipper and the others before it was too late and Amanda gets killed. The werewolf paid Pacifica no mind when she left. Amanda though, was trying to evade the werewolf's attacks but then rushed into a building when one of the werewolf's claws made contact with her back. She quickly barricaded the door but the powerful werewolf relentlessly bashed the door which was barely being held in place with only a wooden bar.

Little at a time, the wooden bar was breaking with each attack the werewolf made. Amanda readied her bow even though her back was injured. The bangs on the door from the werewolf only got louder but then it suddenly stopped. Amanda was breathing heavily and was shaking uncontrollably. Her bow felt heavy to her as she kept the arrow ready to fire if the werewolf broke in.

Blood, sweat, and tears dripped from Amanda, as she starting to feel an unnerving feeling of dread. She knew the werewolf hadn't given up on hunting her down. She couldn't see out the smudged windows of the building she was in but knew the werewolf was close by. Suddenly, an ear-piercing howl emerged and Amanda held her ears in pain.

.

.

.

Dipper and Bovard were rejoined by Candy and Grenda, who returned from their walk that helped Candy calm down. She wanted to explain why she acted the way she did in front of Dipper but before Candy could, Pacifica returned in a panic…

"Elise? What's wrong? Where is Amanda?" Bovard asked the severely out of breath Pacifica.

"She…is…under attack. We need to go NOW!" Pacifica said as she tried to get her breathing under control.

"Attack? By what?" Dipper asked.

"Werewo -" Pacifica started to say but then the group heard the loud howling in the distance.

"We must go. Now!" Bovard said and the group followed hopping they could save Amanda before it was too late…

.

.

.

Meanwhile in Piedmont…

.

.

.

"FOR THE LAST TIME! I WILL NOT BE YOUR QUEEN!" Mabel shouted in anger at the gnomes that followed her around.

"But Lady Mabel! You are the perfect match to lead us. We would follow your every command." Jeff said.

"Listen! I'm leaving for the magic academy first thing in the morning. I don't have time nor the patience to your… gnome queen! Furthermore, my father is the one you should be listening to in the first place. This is his village and he is the regional lord of Piedmont!" Mabel stressed as she stopped to make her point.

"Lord David assured us that we were free to make you our queen with your blessing Lady Mabel. Please reconsider your answer." Jeff pleaded as he kneeled with the rest of the gnomes.

"UGH! Fine! But on two conditions!" Mabel said.

"As you wish Lady Mabel." Jeff answered.

"One! You are to leave me alone unless I come to you first!" Mabel demanded.

"We accept." Jeff said.

"And lastly, you are to protect this village with your very lives! Do I make myself clear?" Mabel ordered.

"Yes Ma'am!" The gnomes shouted with joy.

"Good. Now leave me alone! I have to get ready for tomorrow's journey." Mabel said and the gnomes left her.

"Not even in school yet and already popular with the boys. Hahaha." David laughed and Mabel turned around not knowing that he was there the whole time.

"Very funny Dad. Is it true you allowed them to do this?" Mabel asked.

"Yeah, I told them I've give them a shot. You're old enough to take care of yourself. Hell, you even saved the village with your magic. So, I'm not too worried." David said.

"Ugh! But these buttmunchers are so annoying!" Mabel whined.

"Even so, they're all allies in the defense of the village now. In fact, we've started a vineyard thanks to their…method of payment." David said as he was still baffled by the gnomes request to be paid in grape jam and mushrooms.

"About that. I overheard they only want jam and mushrooms. I understand you've made the vineyard to make the jam but what about the mushrooms?" Mabel asked.

"Well, one of the gnomes said he would be accompanying some of the villagers to pick them. What was his name again?... Smellbag…fartlock… SHMEBULOCK! That's it!" David said remembering the name.

"Well, I guess everything is taken care of then, huh?" Mabel asked.

"There are still a few more repairs but yes, everything is well in hand. Tomorrow morning you will set off with two of our riders and three of the gnome mercenaries. The money and letter of enrollment had already been sent by via courier. So, you shouldn't have any problems when you arrive." David said.

"…You sure this…is ok?" Mabel asked as she started to tear up and David immediately hugged his daughter.

"Yes sweetie. You'll be fine and we'll be fine. No need to worry about a thing, ok?" David said and Mabel nodded in agreement.

Back with Dipper and the others…

.

.

.

After the loud howl, Dipper and the other rushed over to the abandoned town. However, when they looked from the outskirts. They saw 2 werewolves prowling around a specific building. Furthermore, the group heard a loud scream from within the building. The group safely assumed there was a third werewolf inside trying to kill Amanda.

"Dipper, you are to charge in that building to save Amanda. Candy, Grenda, both of you will assist in taking down the remaining two werewolves that are guarding the building." Bovard instructed.

"Everyone ready your silver on your weapons. Be warned, the silver doesn't last forever. So be sure to kill the werewolves quickly." Elise instructed and everyone obeyed as they got out their vials of silver.

"Elise, you are to stay by me the whole time. Understood?" Bovard said.

"Yes. Thank you." Elise said but then Bovard seemed to recognized her voice but ignored it for now.

"Everyone, go!" Bovard shouted and Dipper, Candy, and Grenda rushed to Amanda's aid with their silver on their weapons.

The two werewolves outside the building were intercepted by both Candy and Grenda as planned. Meanwhile, Dipper bypassed them to go inside the building to find and rescue Amanda assuming she was still alive.

Dipper looked all around but couldn't see Amanda. Suddenly, he heard another scream from her from upstairs. Dipper readied his blade coated in silver but noticed that the stairs were almost dilapidated. Carefully, Dipper made his way up step by step. He tried to hurry with Amanda's screams getting more dire. However, the moment he tried to hasten his ascent, one of the rotten steps broke through letting Dipper step through.

"Come ON!" Dipper shouted to himself as he pulled himself out of the hole in the stairs.

But suddenly, he heard a loud thud. Then the werewolf came within view on the top of the stairs…

"Oh shit!" Dipper said as he readied his sword in a panic.

However, the werewolf was attacked from behind by Amanda as she jumped on its back and stabbed the beast in the eye with a broken arrow. The two fell from the stairs and hit Dipper, whom was halfway up the staircase. They all fell to the base of the stairs and landed hard on the floor.

When Dipper got up, he noticed his blade pierced the werewolf's chest. Amanda got up too but she was covered in scars and lost a good amount of blood fighting off the beast. They both then saw the werewolf turn back into a man but he was already dead from Dipper's sword which he took out of the corpse.

"Looks like to be over. Let's go." Amanda said and Dipper agreed as he helped Amanda out of the building.

Once outside, Dipper and Amanda saw both werewolves, that were summoned by the one inside, were already killed. Candy stabbed one and Bovard used his magic to assist. Grenda took the other one down by herself by bashing its head with her mace. They were lucky in battle but not for Amanda whom fell to her knee in pain.

"Amanda!" Elise shouted in worry as she rushed to her aid.

"I-I'm fine. It's just my back." Amanda struggled to say as the pain was throbbing.

"Your back was mauled by a werewolf. You need to treat the wound before you turn into a werewolf from its venom." Bovard explained.

"How do we treat it?" Grenda asked.

"The silver potion that Elise made me earlier would have helped but I used it to assist Candy with my magic. Elise, do you have enough ingredients to make another one?" Bovard asked.

"No…I need two specific ingredients to make this kind of potion." Elise said.

"What do you need?" Dipper asked.

"I need Aconitum, also known as Wolfsbane. I also need Marshmallow root which has a high mucilage content for digestion or appliance. This will help it stick to wound since a paste would be faster than liquefying it." Elise explained which shocked everyone on how knowledgeable she was with plants and herbs.

"Ok…So where do we find these two ingredients?" Candy asked.

"Well, the Marshmallow root is the easiest to find. Look for a river and travel alongside it until you find the plant. It has a woody base stem, its elongated cone-shape with white flesh inside, and the outside is yellowish. However, the unique purple flower, Wolfsbane, is located towards the mountains…" Elsie explained.

"…A trek to the mountains would take 2 days by foot. Luckily, we have a little time before the next full moon. So, I suggest we split up for the time being. Dipper, you will go with Candy to the mountains north of here to find the Wolfsbane. I will stay with Amanda while Elise goes with Grenda to find the Marshmallow root." Bovard instructed.

"Understood." Everyone said in agreement.

"We have about a week before the next full moon. So, I suggest that we camp here for the time being and start getting the ingredients first thing in the morning. We will treat Amanda's wounds with bandages to help stop the bleeding. Candy, take Amanda's bow and arrows. Go with Grenda and hunt us some dinner while Dipper, Elise, and I help Amanda to a more suitable building in this abandoned town. Hopefully, one that has a bed or a cot to lay her down in." Bovard said.

"Sir." Candy and Grenda said as they got ready to leave for their hunt.

.

Meanwhile…

.

.

.

"Damn those brats and that wizard! If my undead trap didn't fail, I wouldn't have to resort to using my prized undead I've been saving for when I decided to attack the capital. Now I would have to save up more dark magic to create these again…" Decar said as he pulled out two handheld statues with sapphire skulls for heads.

With a swift motion, Decar smashed the figurines against the ground. After they both broke, two large specters appeared. Both were powerful ghosts that Decar spent decades fusing dark magic to their very souls…

"Go my revenants! Find and kill those insulant fools!" Decar shouted and the revenants flew away in haste to the west…Where Dipper and the others were miles away…
