The first morning rays of sunlight crept into the bedroom, stirring Kado out of his slumber. Opening his eyes, Kado smiled at the first sight he saw. "When Korra was discovered as the new Avatar, she was kept in a safe and secure compound for her own protection. Almost all the time Korra was under the watchful and protective eye of the White Lotus and because of this Korra missed out on a lot of the normal things of our culture" stated Kado while Asami seemed to understand.
"Like ice dodging? I thought ice dodging was a rite of passage between a father and son" responded Asami while Kado nodded his head.
"Yes like ice dodging. Ice dodging used to be between a father and son but thanks to Master Katara the water tribes have undergone reform to remove large portions of the patriarchy" responded Kado while Asami listened to his explanation.
"When Korra was about sixteen, she asked the White Lotus to allow her to undergo the rite of passage in her culture" stated Kado before he went into the full story about how he got his scar. Thinking back serval years, Kado could still clearly recall that day.
Kado had just gotten done with his morning water bending training, he was walking back to his room to freshen up before going to get something to eat. While Kado was walking down the hallway, he overheard Korra's voice. Korra sounded agitated; she was once again arguing with the White Lotus. Stopping in front of the mediation room, Kado looked inside the room to watch the argument taking place.
"Why can't I go ice dodging" asked Korra while the White Lotus member she was talking to gave her a stern look.
"It's too dangerous. As the Avatar you shouldn't put yourself in dangerous situations if it can be avoided" responded the White Lotus member, his response agitated Korra even further.
"But it's a rite of passage in my culture, I should be able to go through it" responded Korra, hoping that she could successfully argue her point.
"As the Avatar, you don't belong to any one culture. Think about if you were to get injured or worse. What good would this serve the world when it depends on you" asked the White Lotus member as he stood up, seemingly done with this conversation.
"This conversation is over with. I suggest you prepare for your earth bending training, it will begin in an hour" stated the White Lotus member as he walked out of the mediation room, brushing past Kado who strode into the room. Korra had a disappointed look on her face before she noticed Kado walking towards her, her look of disappointment was replaced with a look of annoyance.
"Thanks for the help" stated Korra while Kado stopped in front of her.
"What was I supposed to do? You know I have no authority or say over the White Lotus" responded Kado while he shrugged his shoulders.
"What the White Lotus say goes, you know the rules" stated Kado while Korra huffed in annoyance.
"It just sucks. You were able to go ice dodging and now I'm old enough to do the same" responded Korra while Kado lent her an ear to rant to.
"I've already mastered water bending, I know I can ice dodge" stated Korra while Kado nodded his head in agreement before he offered his counterpoint.

"I've found that with rules, it's easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission" sated Kado, his words causing Korra to feel hope as she smiled at him.
"Does this mean" asked Korra in a hopeful tone while Kado motioned with his finger for Korra to keep the volume down.
"Yup, give me thirty minutes and meet me at the bay. Lucky for you the waters in the bay are pretty rough, perfect for ice dodging" responded Kado with a smile. Korra took a moment to hug her big brother, she was thankful Kado was going to take her ice dodging. After waiting thirty minutes, Korra snuck out of the compound and met her big brother at the bay.
"Glad you were able to sneak out" stated Kado with a friendly smile as he checked the small boat he had brought to the bay. Korra had a wide grin spread across her face as she quickly hugged Kado.
"Thank you" responded Korra, hugging Kado with an alarming amount of strength. Kado chuckled at Korra's response, he always thought it was amusing that his little sister was this physically strong. After another few moments, Korra stepped back from her big brother.
"I can't have you miss out on our culture's tradition just because the White Lotus can be no fun" responded Kado before he climbed into the small boat, Korra following behind him.
"About the ice dodging, you already know the rules. It's up to you to navigate the rough waters and not crash us into the sheets of ice" stated Kado, Korra nodding her head in understanding.
"Use your knowledge of sailing, prove to me that you are an adult within our tribe" stated Kado while he sat cross legged at the front of the boat.
"You won't be getting any help from me and like father told me when I went ice dodging, you aren't forbidden from using your water bending" stated Kado, Korra giving him a determined smile.
"No problem" responded Korra, confidant that she would pass the rite of passage within her culture with flying colors. Korra was determined to prove her worth, she wasn't afraid of the challenge in front of her.
"I take it then the ice dodging didn't go well" asked Asami in a curious tone considering Kado was telling her how he got the scar on his side. Kado nodded his head before he responded to Asami's words.
"At first it went very well, Korra was able to navigate the rough waters and dodge the sheets of ice" responded Kado, recalling how Korra had decided to take on an additional challenge after she already proved herself.
"Instead of sailing back to shore, Korra went further out to sea since there was even rougher waters ahead. Korra made a mistake and crashed the boat against a sheet of ice, that's when I got injured" stated Kado, recalling how his side was spilt open on a jiggered sheet of ice from the crash. As Kado continued with his explanation, he vividly recalled the pain he felt during that day.
"Please don't die Kado, please don't die" stated Korra in a scared and desperate tone after she dragged Kado onto the shore. After crashing into the sheet of ice, it was up to Korra to drag Kado back to shore since he was unable to move thanks to his injury. Kado's clothes were stained red from the large amount of blood he had lost, his skin was quickly turning pale while his breathing was shallow. Korra had Kado slung over her shoulder, she was praying to the spirits that Kado would make the short trip back to the White Lotus compound.
"Korra, set me down" stated Kado in a weak tone.
"I can't stop, you need treatment" responded Korra, still struggling to support Kado's weight since she had been banged up from the crash as well.

"You need to use your fire bending" responded Kado since Korra didn't know how to heal using water bending and he didn't have the unique ability to do so.

"You need to use your fire bending to cauterize the wound, you need to stop the bleeding" responded Kado while he breathed shallowly, he was fighting to stay conscious.
"B-but that will really hurt, I don't know if I have that good control yet" responded Korra, thinking it would be hard to not burn Kado with how panicked she was.
"Yah it's going to hurt like a bitch but it's hell of a lot better than dying. Do it Korra, you can do it" responded Kado in a weak tone. Korra nodded her head in understanding, she knew she didn't have an option since Kado was still quickly losing a large amount of blood. Taking a breath to steady herself, Korra used her fire bending to produce a dagger of fire from her fingertips. Bringing her fingertips towards Kado's injury, Korra's blood turned ice cold when she heard her big brother's screams of agony.
"AGHHHHHH" yelled Kado, unable to stop his screams as Korra burned his flesh. The pain was intense, and Kado's vision blurred while Korra burned his wound. While the pain was intense, Kado was comforted by the fact that it was putting him out of immediate danger. After what seemed like an eternity to the water tribe siblings, Korra stopped her fire bending.
"Done, it's done" stated Korra, feeling awful for Kado's condition. It was thanks to her that Kado was this badly injured, she shouldn't have tried to show off during her ice dodging. Looking at Kado's side, Korra felt like she was going to vomit. Kado's side looked horrible; it was stained red with Kado's dried blood and the flesh underneath had an angry looking burn.
"Thank the sprits that's over" responded Kado, barely staying conscious.
"Take me to the compound, I'm still not out of the woods yet. Take me to the compound and get Master Katara" stated Kado before he lost consciousness. Back to the present, Kado turned to Asami as he finished his story.
"Next thing I knew I woke up in the infirmary, Korra was able to get me to Master Katara just in time" stated Kado while Asami nodded her head in understanding.
"That's quite a story Kado, I'm glad you survived that ordeal" responded Asami while she had a confused look on her face.
"But I'm confused about something. I thought that water benders could heal, why didn't you just heal yourself or if you were too injured, why didn't Korra heal you" asked Asami in a curious tone.
"The answer to that is simple. You are right, water benders can heal but not all of them can. Just like how you have to be born to be a bender, a water bender has to be born with the ability to heal with their bending. I haven't been born with that ability. I'm a master water bending but I'll never be able to heat even a small cut with my bending" responded Kado while Asami nodded her head in understanding.
"As for Korra, she had no interest in learning the healing arts from Master Katara. Korra has always been a very physical person, until then she was only concerned with the combat arts of bending. It took me nearly dying for Korra to finally be open to learning how to heal from Master Katara" stated Kado while Asami processed the information that Kado just told her.
"I see, that would certainly be an ordeal to change one's perspective" responded Asami while Kado nodded his head in agreement.
"By the way please don't mention my scar to Korra. Korra still blames herself for that day even though I've told her countless times I've forgiven her. Bringing up bad memories will do nothing but throw her mind out of balance" stated Kado while Asami smiled at him.
"Don't worry Kado, I won't bring up the scar around Korra" responded Asami, giving Kado a friendly and understanding smile.
