A squad of ultramarines were exploring a ruined librarium on one of the imperium's planets that was scheduled to be exterminated. The squad's job was to recover any valuable knowledge about the imperium before the deadline

"We've searched everywhere correct?" the Squad's leader asked before gaining some affirmatives. One of them, veteran sergeant Carius Nox, was about to say yes when something caught his eye.

"What the?" he pondered before breaking off. "Find something brother Nox?" the squad leader, lieutenant Raxus, asked. Carius reached into a shelf and pulled out what looked like an ancient data slate made of hard leather and paper.

The ultramarine returned to his brothers with it. "What in the emperor's name? What's an ancient Terran tome doing here?" a marine asked. Another nodded

"This librarium is or rather was filled with Data Slates only." He said. this piqued the squad's interest further. "Brother Nox, what's the title of the tome?" Raxus asked watching Carius brush some dust off the book.

"It's called The four cardinal heroes." Carius said opening the tome as they proceeded to leave the librarium. "Interesting." Raxus glanced back at his friend. "What?" the veteran sergeant asked.

"These so-called heroes are worshiped similarly to how we worship our great emperor." Raxus smiled. Carius always did love ancient Terra legends, but he didn't ever hear a legend of four cardinal heroes.

"So the heroes? What are they?" the heavy gunner asked. "The sword, the spear, the bow, and the shield." Carius said before carefully yet frantically flipping the pages. "This is heresy!"

Raxus turned to face him. "What's wrong brother?" he asked. Carius turned to him. "the section about the shield is completely blank." He said not noticing that the tome began to glow faintly. "Uh, brother. The book's being to glowing." The squad's heavy gunner said.

"By the emperor!" Carius exclaimed before a bright light engulfed the room. Raxus heard the dull thud of an object hitting the floor. When the light died down Carius was gone, leaving only the tome.

The squad froze in shock at their sergeant's sudden disappearance. Raxus leapt into action. "Quickly, wrap that tome in cloth. We must alert Lord Calgar of this." He said. "Carius, where ever you are, stand fast, we'll find you." The ultramarine muttered.

Unaware to them, their brother in arms was about to enter an adventure regarding a shield bearer, Tanuki girl, and waves of calamity

Carius shook his head as her regained his senses whilst hearing people speak. He made out the words summoning, success, and five.

Soon, his vision returned and the ultramarine saw four people next to him each with a single cardinal weapon. He spotted the shield bearer. 'since he has little to no offensive capabilities, I shall join his party.' Carius thought.

"Please save us heroes in our time of need." The apparent ruler said Carius tuned out most of the introductions. That changed when the shield bearer was skipped

"And you sir knight?" the false ruler asked. Carius mentally snorted. He had to admit that the false ruler wasn't wrong. Space Marines once wore armor similar to the knights of the first millennium.

"I won't answer because you missed a hero." Carius watched the false ruler scowled in disgust. Something the Ultramarine filed away for later. This time Carius listened

"Name's Naofumi Iwatani. I'm 20 and a college student." The shield bearer said before turning to Carius. "Your turn big guy."

"Carius Nox, Veteran sergeant of the Ultramarine chapter. I won't say my age as you'd most likely find it impossible." The ultramarine said

"Find his age impossible?" Naofumi mused as the king continued albeit with annoyance that Carius called him out for skipping the shield hero.

"As I mentioned, we need your help with a danger that threatens this world." The false ruler stated. Immediately the other heroes refused. "Enough!" Carius bellowed.

"Why should we even save you?" the bow hero, Itsuki, asked the false ruler. "What exactly would we be saving you from?" Naofumi asked. Carius scowled as the shield hero was once again ignored.

"You'll be paid I assure you." The false ruler said. "Allow me Naofumi." Carius whispered to the agitated shield bearer. "What exactly are we saving you from?" the Ultramarine asked.

"Creatures from what we call the waves of calamity sir knight." The king said unintentionally answering Naofumi's question thinking it'd been Carius'.

'So, it's basically this world's version of the warp.' The ultramarine mused as the king continued. "Now each hero is allowed a party. Sir knight" he said gaining Carius' attention. "May I suggest you join the spear or sword hero's party?"

The ultramarine's eyes narrowed. The king definitely knew full well that the shield needed party members more than the other heroes. If the king was going to play favorites, so would he.

"Neither." Carius said catching the king off-guard. "The bow hero then." The false ruler suggested. Carius shook his head and walked past the heroes before standing behind Naofumi.

"you wish to play favorites, then so will I." the Ultramarine said placing a hand on the shield hero's Shoulder. "only people that I approve of may join the shield hero's party." Carius sent a death glare at a red-haired woman that was approaching them.

"You aren't welcome in our party woman." Carius said before ushering Naofumi out the chamber. The king seethed at this. Who was this knight and why'd he deny his daughter joining the shield devil's party. His eyes widened.

Did he know what they were planning. One way or another the knight WOULD be joining either the sword, spear, or bow hero's party.

LATER IN MELROMARC

Naofumi yawned before scratching his head. "ok, so I want to know why you joined my party?" he asked looking at the ultramarine. "I've got a suspicion that the king is going to try and sabotage your leveling. Due to my rank of 100. He attempted to sever your chance at getting stronger or at least surviving the waves." Carius said

"So, you're saying that he'll try to hinder my progress." Naofumi asked. The ultramarine nodded. the shield hero ground his teeth. "another thing, you won't be able to use anything other than your shield."

Carius couldn't help but mentally snicker at Naofumi's cursing of his bad luck. "Another thing that actually makes me angry is that we can't share XP." The Ultramarine said slightly annoyed. "Perhaps, I can be of service?"

The Ultramarine and shield hero turned to see a business man of sorts. "Who are you?" Naofumi asked "Name's Beloukas and I'm a business man."

MEANWHILE

Raxus rushed past various Astartes carrying the cloth wrapped tome that had made his battle brother vanish. He burst into a chamber that housed a chaplain, two elite guards, and the chapter master.

"Forgive my intrusion my lord but.." the lieutenant began after kneeling. "Matters not, now leave lest you wish for punishment." The chaplain said sharply. Raxus ignored the chaplain and continued.

"My lord, if you be willing to listen." He said. the chaplain was about to speak again when the chapter master raised his hand effectively silencing the rude chaplain. The chapter master looked at Raxus. "Proceed." He said.

"Thank you Lord Calgar." Raxus said. "One of my squad mates have gone missing. Now while it wouldn't warrant an audience with you my lord, it is the complications that led to his disappearance." Calgar's eye narrowed.

"Explain." He said. "he vanished before our very eyes my lord, and this was the cause." Raxus said holding out the tome. Calgar took it curiously.

"Please don't remove the cloth my lord. We don't know what it'll do." The lieutenant said seeing Calgar prepare to remove the cloth. "Surely you jest?" the Chaplain said amused. Raxus shot him a look.

"Mere moments prior to his disappearance, we noticed the tome glowed." The lieutenant said. "Tell us then, what's it about then?" Calgar asked. Raxus sighed and recounted what the contents of the tome were.

"Heresy!" the Chaplain said furiously. "What kind of Chronicler leaves an entire section blank!" Raxus nodded.

"That is what the battle brother said prior to his disappearance." Raxus said. "This battle brother of yours, what was his name?" Calgar asked. "Carius Nox, my lord."

Calgar seethed mentally. Carius was his favorite Astarte, second to Titus. He looked at the Tome. "We will find him, but first. Lieutenant, ready your squad for combat. The Thousand sons had fallen to Chaos. After that we shall begin our search."

Raxus saluted and departed.

A/N: Thus begins my second warhammer40k crossover. Few things; did I capture Calgar's character well? Second, this is my interpretation of the mission Calgar had for Titus at the end of Space Marine II, so you will be seeing Titus in this story later.

As for the Trial, it will still happen, but only after a certain Tanuki joins Carius and Naofumi. I also have something special in store next chapter as well for you all.

Please read and review. Constructive criticism allowed. That being said. peace.
