"Hey Jase- we have a problem," Billy said as he reviewed Kim's charts and some of the bloodwork he'd gotten back from her most recent battery of tests. Something just wasn't adding up and it had led him to review and re-watch many of the hospital security videos during her stays. He didn't like what he had discovered, but he wanted to run the theory by at least one other person before bringing this to Kimberly or Tommy. "I think someone is working with Hayley."
"And you're calling me instead of Tommy because…" Jason trailed off as he glanced over at Trini and he then looked at the time. "Oh, neither of them is answering."
"Yeah, but also I need to run this past someone. One of the nurses did an abnormally high amount of checks on Kimberly during her second stay- the one where the amnesia hit. Her bloodwork was all over the place at that time, but I thought it was because of the surgery and ensuing stress of losing her memories…I didn't think to look for human interference until now," Billy said as he heard Jason let out a sigh. No one wanted to have this kind of conversation with Tommy, but if he was right- there was still a very real threat to his family that was walking around the halls of the hospital.
"Give me a half hour. Trini just got back from spending the weekend with Kim and I don't know if she's going to want to come with…" Jason trailed off as Trini locked eyes with him and he just shook his head. "Also- you should keep trying to get Tommy. Even if you're not sure, he's got a better eye for shady shit."
"I hate when you're right."
"God, I hate when you're right," Tommy muttered as he scrolled through the video footage and panned back to some additional footage Billy had managed to get. Kim and Jason were settled on the couch in Billy's home office while he had reviewed things with Billy. "Do we know what she changed out the pain meds for?"
"No idea, it must have had some pain medicine combined with it because she never was in excessive pain. It also could explain why Ollie doesn't remember his time with Hayley over the years," Billy said as Tommy glanced up to see that Kim was not taking this well. He stepped away from the computer and walked over to her. Jason looked between the two of them, but said nothing as Kim gripped onto his arms and Tommy caught her gaze.
"She got someone at the hospital to do something to me? We know that Ollie didn't get his memories back…what if…what if it's all…" Kim stumbled over her words and Tommy realized her knuckles had turned white from the death grip she had on him. He pulled her into his arms and held her as she lost it. Jason rubbed her back as they exchanged a glance, even if things had been bad she had at least been holding it together.
"I have started the investigation process at the hospital and have asked that they keep it quiet until they are ready to act," Billy said as Tommy and Jason nodded. While they skirted around many rules to get treatment without people being aware of the real reason why, this was not something that they could handle in a ranger way. Not unless she did something that would fall into their lane and then she would find herself in the same prison as Hayley. "I don't know why Amber would be susceptible."
"What do you know about her background?" Jason asked and Billy passed over her personnel file. He hadn't hired her, but he'd never had any issues with her performance. She had worked her way onto his team through being one of the best in her field, now he was concerned that that had only been so that she was positioned for this. Jason started pouring over the file as Kim's sobs quieted, but she didn't move away from Tommy. Instead she slipped off the couch and into his lap as he cradled her in his arms. "Grew up in Angel Grove?"
"There's a lot of people that work here that grew up in Angel Grove," Billy said and Jason gave him a look as he pointed at the next line. "Shit."
"Guys, you gotta share," Tommy said as he tried to look back at them, but was stilled by hands clutching his shoulders and neck.
"She's also been in Turtle Cove and currently lives in Reefside," Jason said and Tommy let out a groan. "So there's a good chance…"
"There's a backstory, there has to be a backstory that made her susceptible," Tommy muttered and he pulled back a bit to see that Kim was fighting sleep in his arms. "I got you, baby- sleep if you need to."
"Okay," Kim whispered as her head nodded against him and her arms loosened from around his body, sliding down his sides before she wiggled into his chest and gathered fistfuls of his shirt into her hands. He smiled as he recognized another way that Opal took after her, another thing that he wanted so desperately for her to see in herself again.
"She out?" Jason asked after a few minutes of silence and Tommy barely nodded as he concentrated on keeping her comfortable. "You two better?"
"Getting there," Tommy whispered as he looked up and saw Jason and Billy had both settled onto the couch and were holding the files where he could read them. He scanned over the information and just shook his head. This was it. They just needed to confirm it. "I'm going to need some time frames- to make sure that it aligns with when we…when I was active. Do you think we can get Tanya to do a cyber profile of her?"
"A cyber…yeah- we can reach out…" Jason trailed off as Kat knocked on the door and then peeked in, they all looked up at her and the resignation hit her face.
"Tanya's already on it, I gave her a call as soon as we identified who it was," Kat said as she sat down next to Billy and gave Tommy a concerned look. "You two okay?"
"Not really, but we're…maybe things are getting better or were getting better…" Tommy muttered as he looked between all of them. "I think she now firmly believes that we're done- so that's good."
"She thought…how did she even…" Kat muttered as Jason gave her a look. Kim had woken up thinking she was 17 and the few memories that she had recovered had been while they were all still in high school. "Crap, we would have been dating at that time."
"Yeah and she saw you drop off some stuff at the dojo and…that's the reason I took a weekend away and sent the kids to stay with my parents. I don't know what Trini did but…" Tommy trailed off as he saw the pity on all of their faces. They had watched them move past all the pain and all the trauma and somehow Hayley had managed to bring all of this back up. "We're going to be fine. If it means I have to start at date number one for the third time in our lives- I will. If she's really lost the last 18 years forever…"
"Trini kept saying that she felt like it was right there, like there was something that was just out of reach when she read through her journals," Jason said and Tommy gave him a confused look. They hadn't talked much this weekend, but that wasn't the impression he had gotten when he got home a few hours ago. "Kim asked her a lot of questions and she pointed her back to what she had written about her own life instead of trying to answer them. I'm surprised you didn't give her, her journals and the letters you both keep before now."
"I didn't think about it. I've never really looked at them other than to put her journal back in her nightstand," Tommy said as they all stared at him. He had never been curious about what she was writing? "What?"
"I just can't believe you've never looked at them," Kat ventured and he shrugged. "You just trust that…"
"She tells me what is important, those journals are just for her," Tommy stated and he saw the shock and confusion cross their faces. Apparently they had assumed that the two of them crept around in each other's lives to understand each other better. "Can you get Tanya to send me what she finds?"
"Sure- are you going to head out?" Jason asked and Tommy nodded as he glanced at his watch and knew he had just long enough to get home before their children got there. "You need a hand?"
"Yeah." Tommy slowly started releasing his shirt from her hands, concentrating on keeping her asleep. Today had been a highly emotional day for her and now that he knew she had read her journals, this weekend must have been highly emotional as well. When he finally got her loose, Jason pulled her into his arms and Tommy stood up, shaking out his body before picking her up again. Jason headed out in front of them, opening doors and otherwise just helping them leave. He watched the bronco disappear down the driveway and heard Billy and Katherine walk up behind him.
"You think he's really okay?" Kat asked and Jason shook his head as his phone dinged and he looked down to see they'd gotten a group message from Tanya, but realized Tommy and Kimberly had been left off for now. That couldn't be good. "I just want this to be over."
"We all do and I'd say they want it to be over more than all of us. Okay- you look at the preliminary report and I call Andros?" Jason suggested as Billy opened the document and let out a groan before he nodded. "I'm guessing we'll have about 24 hours before Tommy wants to talk an actual plan. Do you think the hospital is going to move that fast?"
"No way in hell," Billy muttered as the three of them exchanged a glance. "So we're also going to have to manage that."
"Do we?" Kat asked and they spun around to face her. "I know what I'm suggesting, but if we just let Tommy go on this and figure out what actually happened, maybe there is a way to work through this and do something to help it lift. He's not doing well, he needs her. The her that remembers everything."
"Amber knows who he is now. He came in to talk with all of them after the surgery that Hayley tried to crash to explain who he was and who she was," Billy said and Kat's face contorted as she tried to follow his logic. "She could just ruin them by revealing them."
"I don't know that he cares about that anymore. I just think that we may want to keep it on the table if the hospital doesn't do anything," Kat said and the silence spread through the two men. She leaned over and gave Billy a quick kiss on the cheek before walking back into the house, acting like she had not just dropped a bomb on the two of them. They had always carefully managed situations like this, but what if she was right. What if, for once, they just let Tommy at what was directly a threat to his family?
