When your love lies, only time.
Sesshomaru vanished to the palace of his mother in the sky were all he could do is watch. His jaw clenched in anger. He knew she was right but this felt so wrong. He should be protecting her, protecting them.
His eyes slowly made their way up to heaven as something dawned on him. So much so it gave the demon Lord chills. He finally understood what his father was saying, asking, and doing. Clarity like the sun after a storm removed the fog that had blinded him.
Everything his father had done had been in protection.
He protected his people, he protected his children, he protected his mate.
He wanted to pass down that love to him. Sesshomaru closed his eyes.
Was the answer to it all really so simple?
He opened his eyes and looked down and watched a girl, no a woman defend, fight.
She was fighting a battle that wasn't really hers. She did it without pause, without question, without asking anything in return.'
He snorted, of course, it was that simple, she was that simple.
Her love knew no bounds, no limits. He was glad it had not killed her, yet.
Inuyasha died for it, Kikyo died for it, hell his own father decided to die for it.
He knew she would too.
His lips parted as his fathers words came back to him and a new set a chills ran down his spine.
"My son, do you have someone to protect?"
Was it too late now? He had no birthright, no brother, no lands, nothing.
He had nothing but the castle he stood in, and that meant very little to him.
Even if she did save his race, what would be left? What use was he, what good was his name?
"I have failed," Words he never thought he would utter in his life. "Forgive me, Father,"
He closed his eyes again "For I Sesshomaru have nothing to protect,"
But as he said the words his minds eye flashed to her kiss.
His eyes snapped open "She does not belong to me,"
Her last words to him rung clear in his ears as if she was saying them again,
"You have to go! Protect your people!"
He wanted to protect her.
"Go Sesshomaru, dont make their mistake, I'll find you!"
Sesshomaru stood tall "Foolish female," She knew he was hesitating to leave, which meant she knew he cared for her well-being. Did she think he would die so easily? Did she have little faith in him because of his failures? His pride was bruised, funny because at one time that would not have mattered to him.
Leave it to her to think to protect him like that, no one else would.
His brother's sword pulsed at his side, a whisper so clear yet the words stunned him.
Love.
Surly the sword lied.
"She has many to protect, not I alone."
Yet he had left, it would have been foolish of him to stay, even he knew he could not survive that much holy power.
But he could not leave her down there alone, they had sworn their loyalty to one another which meant he would stand beside her when he could, just as she would stand beside him when she could.
Sesshomaru leaped from the sky and fell to the earth.
But she was long gone upon his return, vanishes like thin air. All power traces are gone.
She was alive but very gone. The idea that he could not reach out and touch her crawled under his skin and left his markings dark.
His brother's sword pulsed again,
"Be quiet," Sesshomaru snapped.
He wouldn't seek her. She said she would find him and he knew she would. It wasn't a matter of if, but of when. They both needed time to address what was at the forefront of his mind.
His brother's sword spoke again and Sesshomaru growled "I am not a lier,"
He wasn't, but his heart was still denying the truth even as he knew it.
He cared for her, indulged her, and even seemed to love her.
But today was her day to protect him and when the time was right, when he was ready, when she came calling it would be his turn to protect her.
Protect her he would because he was the Alpha male and he didn't make mistakes or at least he wouldn't anymore. His only goal now was to protect her no matter the cost, no matter the outcome, regardless of what it may or may not mean for them as a whole.
She was the future, the mother of mothers, the one who would save the world.
In the end, it didn't matter if he was alive or dead, it only mattered if she was.
