Chapter 4: A Possible Alliance

Anna's POV

The salty breeze whipped through the sails as the ship glided toward the Kingdom of Fellen. I breathed it in deeply. Even after two years at sea, I still loved the smell of the ocean.

Draken walked up to me.

"We should be there soon, Your Majesty." He said nervously.

I smiled at him. "Please, just Anna will be fine."

He nods.

I leaned up against the railing of the ship. "So, you ready for your first diplomatic mission?"

"Not really. I'm terrified. This is uncharted territory. We haven't been at peace let alone allied with Fellen in over two generations. "

I nodded. "It's a huge undertaking. But we can do it."

"Of course we can."

Haggis came up from below deck, a mug of ale in his hand.

"Yeah, but it's still scary," Draken said with a sigh.

"Fear is just a part of the journey," Haggis McThorn chimed in, his deep Scottish brogue resonating through the air like a warm embrace. The big Scotsman puffed out his chest, his broad shoulders almost blocking the view of the shimmering waters. "You need to be confident when talking about alliances, lad! Show them strength and confidence!" He laughed heartily, the sound echoing against the ship's wooden frame, his eyes sparkling with a mixture of mirth and encouragement.

I nodded and was going to chime in but then I heard something.

It was low, like a call. It sounded like a woman was calling me.

Ah ah ah oh.

"Did you guys hear that?" I asked

"Yep. The bell. We're here." Haggis said as he pointed into the distance.

I looked to see the Kingdom of Fellen come into view.

As we neared the port, the Kingdom of Fellen emerged on the skyline, a breathtaking array of vibrant colors and grandeur. The castle spires, adorned with banners fluttering in the wind, pierced the sky. The majestic architecture stood proudly against the azure backdrop, hinting at the wealth and culture that awaited us.

The ship finally docked, and we stepped off onto the sturdy wooden planks of the port. Draken's eyes widened in astonishment. The harbor bustled with life, a lively mix of merchants, nobles, and townsfolk enjoying the evening. The air was fragrant with the rich aroma of roasted meats and sweet pastries wafting from the nearby restaurants.

Lining the dock were charming shops, their vibrant storefronts filled to the brim with exquisite fabrics, sparkling jewelry, and colorful trinkets that glimmered under the warm glow of lantern light. The lanterns, adorned with silver and gold, flickered softly, casting a magical glow that danced across the cobblestone streets.

Nobles strolled leisurely, their luxurious attire reflecting the latest fashions, shimmering silks, and elaborate embroidery catching the eye. Laughter and music floated through the air, hinting at festivities that would soon unfold. The echoes of merriment created an inviting atmosphere, wrapping around us like a cozy blanket.

"Wow," I said as I looked around. "It's like war has never come here."

"Look at this place!" Draken exclaimed, his nervousness momentarily forgotten as he took in the scene. "It's like a dream."

"Aye, but dreams come with responsibilities," Haggis reminded him, his tone shifting to one of seriousness. "We need to find the Ambassador of Fellen. He'll guide us through the intricacies of this kingdom."

As we made our way through the bustling port, the warmth of the lantern light contrasted with the cool evening breeze. I felt a thrill of excitement, my heart racing with the possibilities that lay ahead. Each step brought us closer to our diplomatic mission, but also deeper into the enchanting heart of Fellen, a kingdom vibrant with life, culture, and the promise of new alliances.

General POV

As Anna stepped through the heavy wooden door of her room at the local tavern and inn, she was immediately enveloped by a cozy warmth that contrasted beautifully with the crisp evening air outside. The flickering candlelight cast playful shadows against the walls, while the rich scent of polished wood and fresh linens filled her senses with comfort.

"Standard room, they said," she murmured to herself, her eyes widening in delight as she took in the space. The intricately carved furniture—a sturdy oak dresser and plush bed draped in soft, colorful fabrics—made the room feel inviting and luxurious. A small window overlooked the bustling streets of Fellen, where laughter and chatter from the tavern below floated up like a gentle melody, beckoning her to join the festivities.

Anna couldn't help but marvel at the attention to detail. The walls were adorned with vibrant tapestries depicting scenes from Fellen's rich history. Knights in battle, graceful dancers, and lush landscapes seemed to come alive, telling stories of a kingdom steeped in culture. "If this is standard, I can only imagine what the deluxe rooms must look like!" she thought, smiling at the thought.

After a quick refresh, Anna made her way downstairs, her heart fluttering with excitement and anticipation about the evening ahead. The tavern bustled with life, filled with the sounds of clinking mugs and hearty laughter. The warm glow of the fireplace at the far end created a welcoming ambiance, while the scent of hearty stew and freshly baked bread wafted through the air, teasing her appetite.

Spotting Haggis and Draken at the bar, she felt a surge of affection for her companions. Haggis, with his booming laughter and broad shoulders, was regaling Draken with tales of his past adventures. The sight made Anna smile, knowing that Haggis's stories would help ease Draken's nerves.

"Did you save any of the good stories for me?" she teased as she approached them, her lips curling into a playful grin.

Haggis turned, his face lighting up with a grin that was as wide as the sea. "Aye, lass! I was just telling young Draken here about the time I bested a bear in the Highlands! Of course, it was more of a misunderstanding than a battle, but it's a grand tale nonetheless!"

Anna chuckled, loving the way Haggis could turn even the most mundane events into grand adventures. Draken, looking nervous, fiddled with the edge of his drink. "I'm not sure I'd want to tangle with a bear, even if it was just a misunderstanding," he said, his voice trembling slightly.

"Don't worry, Dennis," Anna said, her tone light and encouraging. "You'll face much scarier things than a bear tonight."

As she settled onto a stool beside them, her excitement bubbled to the surface. "So, what do we know about the Ambassador of Fellen?" she asked, eager to dive into the task at hand.

"Ah, Ambassador Fabian," Haggis replied, leaning in with a conspiratorial tone. "He's known to be a straightforward man—no beating around the bush with him. If he has something to say, he'll say it, and I admire that, to be honest."

Draken nodded, his expression suddenly serious. "I've heard he's quite respected in these parts. They say he values honesty above all else, which can be both a blessing and a challenge in diplomacy."

Anna felt a twinge of apprehension at the thought of meeting someone so direct. "When do we meet him?" she asked, her curiosity piqued as she leaned closer.

Haggis took a hearty swig of his drink, the amber liquid catching the candlelight as he set it down with a satisfying thud. "Tonight, lass! He enjoys frequenting this very bar after a hard day's work. We'll find him among the locals, probably sharing a story or two of his own."

"Do you think he'll be open to our ideas for alliances?" she asked, a hint of concern creeping into her voice, her mind racing with the possibilities.

"Confidence, lass," Haggis reminded her, his gaze steady and reassuring. "You've got the spirit of a true leader. Just speak your mind, and he'll respect you for it."

Draken took a deep breath, glancing around the bustling tavern as if searching for the ambassador already. "I hope I can muster some of that confidence too," he admitted, his voice laced with apprehension.

"You will, Dennis!" Anna encouraged, placing a hand on his shoulder. "We're in this together. Besides, you've got Haggis to back you up. If anything goes awry, we'll just have to throw him at the ambassador!"

Haggis roared with laughter, slapping his knee in delight. "Aye, I'll be your human shield, lad! Just keep your wits about you."

As they shared a light-hearted moment, Anna felt a wave of warmth and camaraderie wash over her. The tavern thrummed with energy, filled with laughter and the promise of what was to come, and she couldn't help but feel hopeful as they prepared to meet Ambassador Fabian.

"Let's finish our drinks and get ready," Anna suggested, raising her mug in a toast. "To new friendships and alliances!"

"To new friendships and alliances!" Haggis and Draken echoed, their mugs clinking together in a cheerful chorus.

An hour had slipped by in a flurry of laughter and drinks, but Anna's excitement was beginning to wane as she watched the door to the tavern. The vibrant atmosphere had settled slightly, and she could feel the anticipation thickening in the air. Just then, the door creaked open, and in walked Ambassador Fabian.

He was a skinny older man with dark brown hair and a sly goatee on his face. His face resembled a fox making him seem clever.

At first glance, Anna's heart sank. Fabian looked miserable, his brow furrowed and his shoulders hunched, as if the weight of the world rested upon them. The lively chatter of the bar seemed to dim as a palpable tension surrounded him. He scanned the room wearily, and Anna could see the stress etched into his features. The sight made her hesitate, her earlier bravado faltering.

"Do we have to approach him?" she whispered to Haggis, glancing nervously at Draken, who appeared equally unsure.

Just then, Dennis, emboldened by the drinks he had consumed, stood up with unexpected determination. "I'm going to talk to him," he declared, his voice slightly slurred but filled with resolve. Before Anna or Haggis could interject, he strode over to Fabian, his steps a mixture of bravado and wobbliness.

"Wait, Dennis, maybe we should—" Anna started, but he was already too far away. Her heart raced as she watched him approach the stern diplomat, who appeared ready to dismiss him with a mere glance.

Dennis cleared his throat, puffing out his chest in an attempt to exude confidence. "Um, I'm Ambassador Draken from Arendelle," he began, his voice wavering slightly. "I wanted to introduce myself—"

But before he could finish, Fabian interrupted him, his tone firm yet lacking warmth. "Back off and leave me be, or I'll have you arrested," he stated coolly, his eyes narrowing as he regarded Dennis with a mix of annoyance and disbelief.

Anna gasped, her instincts kicking in. She started to rise from her seat, but Haggis was quicker. With a determined stride, he approached the two men, his imposing figure radiating authority. "Now, hold on a moment there! Is that any way to greet diplomats?" he interjected, drawing both Dennis and Fabian's attention.

Fabian sighed, his irritation visibly deflating as he ran a hand through his hair. "I apologize," he said, his voice softening slightly, though the stress still hung around him. "I've had a rather difficult day."

Anna stepped forward, feeling the need to defuse the situation. "We understand, Ambassador Fabian. This is a big night for us, and we're eager to learn from you," she said, her voice steady yet warm.

Fabian's demeanor shifted as he looked at her, recognition dawning in his eyes. "And who might you be?" he asked, a hint of curiosity breaking through his stern facade.

Haggis took the lead again, introducing their group with pride. "I am Ambassador Haggis McThorn of the Kingsman Resistance, and this is Princess Anna of Arendelle," he said, gesturing to her with a flourish.

With a respectful bow, Fabian acknowledged her presence. "Your Highness," he said, his voice dropping to a more formal tone, "it is an honor to meet you." His eyes softened, and for a brief moment, the weight of his stress seemed to lift, replaced by a sense of professionalism.

Anna felt a rush of warmth at his respectful gesture. "The honor is mine, Ambassador Fabian. We're here to discuss potential alliances between our kingdoms," she said, her heart racing with the significance of the moment.

Fabian regarded her with a new interest, his demeanor shifting from defensive to contemplative. "Very well, then. If you're here to talk alliances, I suppose we should find a more suitable place to discuss these matters," he suggested, the tension in his shoulders easing just a fraction.

"Absolutely!" Anna replied, relieved that the initial confrontation had been diffused. She glanced at Draken, who looked both sheepish and relieved and then at Haggis, who nodded in approval.

As Fabian led them to a quieter corner of the tavern, the atmosphere shifted slightly, the noise of the bustling bar fading into a dull hum. Anna could feel the weight of the moment settling around them, and her heart raced with both excitement and apprehension. This was their chance to discuss the future, but she sensed that Fabian would not easily overlook the rocky history between their kingdoms.

Fabian gestured for them to sit, his expression serious as he regarded them with a keen gaze. "Before we delve into any discussions of alliances, I must ask—why should Fellen consider allying with Arendelle after the tumultuous history we share?" His voice was steady, but Anna could hear the underlying tension. "Your kingdom suffered under Queen Zika's rule, yet our nations have clashed in the past. What assurance do we have that this time will be different?"

Anna took a deep breath, her mind racing as she gathered her thoughts. She glanced at Haggis and Draken, both of whom nodded encouragingly, and then she turned her attention back to Fabian. "My sister and I have just freed Arendelle from the tyranny of Queen Zika's rule," she began, her voice steady despite the weight of her words. "We faced tremendous challenges, and both Arendelle and the Kingsman Resistance suffered heavy losses in the process."

She paused for a moment, allowing the gravity of her statement to sink in before continuing. "We understand that our past is fraught with conflict and pain. However, we believe that the past is the past, and we must look to the future. We need more troops and support to rebuild and ensure that Arendelle remains a place of freedom and hope. An alliance with Fellen could offer us the strength we need to continue the fight against the tyranny of Queen Zika's rule, both in what remains in Arendelle, and Dunbrock and Corona."

Fabian listened intently, his expression thoughtful as Anna spoke. She could see the gears turning in his mind, the skepticism starting to wane as he considered her words.

Haggis leaned forward, a smile creeping onto his face as he nodded in agreement. "Aye, Ambassador! The past may not be forgotten, but it doesn't have to dictate our future. Together, we can forge a new path, one built on understanding and cooperation rather than conflict. We're here to create a legacy of strength, not enmity."

Fabian met Anna's gaze, and for a moment, the tension in the air dissipated. "Your passion is commendable, Princess Anna," he said, a hint of respect in his voice. "Perhaps there is merit in your proposal. It will take time to rebuild trust, but your sincerity is noted."

Anna felt a surge of hope as she exchanged glances with Haggis and Draken, their resolve mirrored in her eyes. This was just the beginning of their journey, and she was determined to see it through. "Thank you, Ambassador,"

As the atmosphere settled, Anna felt a flicker of hope ignite within her, but before she could delve deeper into discussions of alliances, Fabian's expression darkened once again. He leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms and letting out a weary sigh. "Before we proceed any further," he began, his voice low and serious, "I must inform you that Fellen is on the brink of civil war."

Anna's heart sank as she exchanged worried glances with Haggis and Draken. "Civil war?" she echoed, her voice barely above a whisper. "What do you mean?"

Fabian continued his tone grave. "King Diederik has been seeking to go to war against Arendelle to avenge past misdeeds—an understandable reaction given our history. However, his older brother, Prince Baldric, is threatening to instigate a civil war to dethrone him. The kingdom is torn between loyalty to the crown and the desire for peace."

The weight of his words hung heavily in the air. Anna felt a knot tightening in her stomach. It was clear that their plans for an alliance were now overshadowed by the turmoil within Fellen itself. "So, you're saying we can't discuss an alliance between Fellen and Arendelle or the Kingsman Resistance until this issue is resolved?" she asked, her voice thick with concern.

Fabian nodded, his gaze steady but troubled. "Precisely. Until this conflict is settled, any discussions of partnership would be futile. We cannot afford to extend our hand to Arendelle while our own house is divided."

A surge of determination coursed through Anna as she considered the gravity of the situation. "Ambassador Fabian," she said, leaning forward earnestly, "what if we could help? If Fellen is facing a civil war, perhaps we could offer our support in resolving this conflict."

Fabian raised an eyebrow, surprised by her boldness. "You wish to interfere in our internal affairs? This is not a matter to be taken lightly, Princess."

"I understand that," Anna replied, her voice unwavering. "But if civil war breaks out, it will only lead to more suffering for your people—and ours. Arendelle has faced tyranny and pain; we want to prevent that from spreading further. We can offer assistance, whether it's mediation or support in finding a peaceful resolution."

Haggis nodded vigorously, his expression filled with conviction. "Aye! If there's a chance to prevent bloodshed, we must seize it. A united front could strengthen our nations, even in the face of adversity."

Draken, still slightly shaken but growing more confident, added, "We want to help, Ambassador. We believe in a future where our kingdoms can stand together, not as enemies but as allies. But we can't do that if Fellen is torn apart from within."

Fabian regarded them with a mixture of admiration and caution, the tension in his shoulders easing just a fraction. "Your sincerity is commendable, but the complexities of royal politics are not easily navigated. It will take more than goodwill to change the course of this conflict."

"Then let us try," Anna urged, her heart racing with the urgency of the moment. "I know it won't be easy, but we can't stand by and watch as more lives are put at risk. If there's a chance to mediate between King Diederik and Prince Baldric, we need to take it."

Fabian leaned back, contemplating her words. The flicker of hope in Anna's heart grew stronger as she saw a glimmer of consideration in his eyes. "You are bold, Princess Anna," he said slowly. "I will need to think this through, but your offer does not go unnoticed."

Fabian nodded, the consideration in his eye faint but there. She was suddenly worried that he wouldn't see it through.

Haggis must have sensed this too because he ordered a few drinks.

"Come, Ambassador, sure we can come to an arrangement?"

Right here, right now

I put the offer out

I don't wanna chase you down

I know you see it

You run with me

And I can cut you free

Out of the drudgery and walls you keep in

So trade that typical for something colorful

And if it's crazy, live a little crazy

You can play it sensible, a king of conventional

Or you can risk it all and see

Don't you wanna get away from the same old part you gotta play

'Cause I got what you need, so come with me and take the ride

It'll take you to the other side

'Cause you can do like you do

Or you can do like me

Stay in the cage, or you'll finally take the key

Oh, damn, suddenly you're free to fly

It'll take you to the other side

Fabian smiled at Haggis's attempted coercion.

Okay, my friend, you want to cut me in

Well, I hate to tell you, but it just won't happen

So thanks, but no

I think I'm good to go

'Cause I quite enjoy the life you say I'm trapped in

Now I admire you, and that rebel thing you do

You're onto something, really it's something

But I live among the swells, and we don't pick up broken homes

I'll have to leave that up to you

Don't you know that I'm okay with this uptown part I get to play

'Cause I got what I need and I don't want to take the ride

I don't need to see the other side

So go and do like you do

I'm good to do like me

Ain't in a cage, so I don't need to take the key

Oh, damn, can't you see I'm doing fine

I don't need to see the other side

Haggis leaned back and nodded.

Now is this really how you like to spend your days?

Whiskey and misery, and parties and plays

If I were mixed up with you, I'd be the talk of the town

Disgraced and disowned, another one of the rebels

But you would finally live a little, finally laugh a little

Just let me give you the freedom to dream

And it'll wake you up and cure your aching

Take your walls and start 'em breaking

Now that's a deal that seems worth taking

But I guess I'll leave that up to you

Fabian regarded him with a skeptical expression, his brow furrowing as he considered the implications of accepting help from Arendelle. "It's not a simple matter, Ambassador McThorn. Trust is hard to come by, especially with the history we share. Fellen has suffered greatly from past actions, and many here would be resistant to the idea of collaborating with Arendelle."

"True enough," Haggis replied, his voice steady, unwavering. "But what's the alternative? Continued bloodshed and suffering for our people? We're here to help, and I firmly believe that together we can find a way to resolve this conflict. A united front could even strengthen both our nations."

Fabian crossed his arms tightly, clearly torn between his instincts and the possibility of a new path. "And what makes you think your involvement will change anything? You're outsiders in a deeply rooted struggle, and Fellen is not an easy kingdom to navigate."

Anna watched as the two men exchanged words, Haggis maintaining his steady confidence while Fabian wrestled with uncertainty and the weight of his responsibilities. "We're not here to impose our will," Anna interjected, her voice firm yet hopeful. "We want to support peace and help both sides find common ground. The last thing we want is for Fellen to descend into chaos."

After a few tense moments, Fabian's expression began to shift. "Perhaps… if we can find a way to facilitate dialogue between King Diederik and Prince Baldric, maybe even bring in your sister, to show Arendelle's willingness for peace, then maybe there is a path forward," he said cautiously, his tone softening just slightly.

Haggis smiled, sensing the momentum building toward an agreement. "Then it's settled! We'll mediate with the help of Queen Elsa, and together we can help Fellen navigate this turmoil. We'll bring both parties to the table and work toward a peaceful resolution."

Don't you wanna get away to a whole new part you're gonna play

'Cause I got what you need, so come with me and take the ride

To the other side

So if you do like I do

So if you do like me

Forget the cage, 'cause we know how to make the key

Oh, damn, suddenly we're free to fly

We're going to the other side

So if you do like I do

(To the other side)

So if you do like me

(Going to the other side)

'Cause if we do we're going to the other side

We're going to the other side

Fabian nodded slowly, clearly weighing the risks and benefits of such a partnership. Haggis extended his hand, a gesture of goodwill and solidarity, and Fabian hesitated only a moment before grasping it firmly.

"Agreed," Fabian said, his expression now resolute. "Let's see if we can bring some stability back to Fellen. Your involvement could be the catalyst we need."

As they shook hands, a sense of hope filled the air, and Anna couldn't help but feel the energy shift in the room. Perhaps this was indeed the beginning of a new chapter, not just for Fellen and Arendelle, but for all their kingdoms.

With their agreement sealed, Anna felt a surge of determination. They had a long road ahead, but together, they could pave the way to a brighter future.

Fabian stands up.

"Come, my new friends. I know someone will want to meet you."
