Chapter 2
"Man, these yellow blazers are really not my thing." I sighed as I walked out of the dorms with my roommate to face the first official day of boarding school.
"Yes, you've made it quite clear on numerous occasions already your distaste for wearing Ra's colors and it hasn't even been twelve hours."
"Oh come on Bastion, it's not like I dislike the people or anything it's just, why this shade of yellow?" I pouted in protest.
"I suppose I can't argue with you there, it does seem likely to stain a little too easily." Bastion nodded, shooting a quick almost knowing look down at our uniforms.
"Right you are Bastion old bean, which is why I plan to move up to Obelisk house." I informed.
"Ha you, in Obelisk Blue colors!? Don't make me laugh. You have a better chance of getting detention than into Obelisk Blue." I didn't have to turn around to know that it was Chazz Princeton who was trying to get a rise out of me.
"Well if you think you're so much better than me, then perhaps you'd like to prove it." I countered easily.
"Alright how about we settle this tonight at midnight in the Obelisk indoor Duel Arenas, or are you scared?"
"Of you? Not in the least." I replied confidently.
"Good, then I guess I'll see ya there." Chazz muttered as he shoved past us with his two lackwit underlings in tow.
"You do realize that you just challenged Chazz Princeton to an after hours duel." Bastion said as he ran to catch up to me.
"Not now." I whispered to my roommate as we waltzed into the classroom who thankfully let the subject drop since Dr. Crowler was in the room.
Mercifully, Crowler began his lecture on card types and their various uses and functions in the game of Duel Monsters which he promised was but the prelude to the first of many lectures that would not only build our current understandings of the game but also upon it.
He also decided to hand homework out at the beginning of the period along with the syllabus, the former of which was rather easy although it was probably meant to be somewhat so.
Well, unless you were two particular Slifer sleepers, in which case I can only imagine that you were going to be in for a hard night of homework.
"You there, Charity Case, explain to the class what a Field Spell is."
"A field spell is a special spell card that is placed in field spell zone and can drastically alter the game often by raising the attack, defense, or in many cases both attack and defense while also in those same cases lowering the attack and defense of monsters however there are some spells that have costs associated with them such as with Mausoleum of the Emperor. The effects of these spells whether they be positive or not may also be reaped by your opponent in many cases. All field spells have a spell speed of one." I mechanically recited an abridged version of what the Yugioh Wiki had to say on the subject though I suppose I should be calling it the Duel Monsters Wiki now.
"Very good, and since it seems we're almost out of time for today I'd like that homework I handed out earlier to be on my desk by the start of class tomorrow, and don't forget to take notes on what your peer has told you about field spells today."
"Class dismissed." Crowler excused the class as the bell rang.
"Say Doc," I began cautiously.
"Oh, you're still here, good!" Crowler responded.
"Good, why is that sir?" I asked, curiosity getting the better of me.
"Well, you see I was hoping to speak with you about your entrance exam, particularly the part where we dueled." Crowler began sounding much like a teacher would in this situation.
"What about it?" I inquired.
"The cards you used, well, some of them appear to be, one of a kind."
"Why Dr. Crowler, what exactly are you getting at?"
"What I'm trying to say to you is to be careful, because not only are those cards one of a kind there's also no record of their existence before you used them in our duel!" He replied losing all sense of composure.
"And if you can figure all this out then so could anyone." I finished for him.
"I'm glad I seem to have made my point, now was there something I can help you with?" Crowler nodded seemingly pleased that I wasn't an idiot that needed everything explained to him.
"Yeah, can I hand this in now?" I asked as the bell rang for the start of the next period. "And also get a hall pass?" I inquired further.
"But of course, signor." Crowler replied taking my homework and reaching into his desk for a pass.
"And Dylan, we'll discuss your rather unique situation more later but for now do try to keep out of trouble and avoid using that deck." He told me as he handed me the pass to Duel Alchemy class.
"Yes sir." I replied quietly as I scurried off to the other end of the school to get to Banner's class which hopefully won't have started yet.
Unfortunately for me, the class would be almost over by the time I found it, yes there were students that called me late, yes I also ignored them.
"Now now students, I know he's late but that is currently not a reason for you to make fun, nya." Banner admonished as he handed me a syllabus and pointed me to my assigned seat.
"I'm sorry Dylan, but I'm afraid we're almost done for today so you'll have to find someone who will let you copy their notes on the day's lecture." Banner apologized as the bell rang signaling the end of the period. "Nya, class dismissed." He called as everyone gathered their things to go on to whatever classes they had next.
Which in my case was Phy. Ed. with Ms. Fontaine, however, I would need to take care of something before I got there.
"Excuse me ladies, but do any of you have a moment to spare?" I asked with an alien confidence as I approached the trio of Jasmine, Mindy, and Alexis.
"No not really, but I suppose we can walk and talk for a bit if we happen to be headed in the same direction." Alexis partially rebuked.
"Good enough for me," I replied. "And first of all, yes, I do plan on asking you girls for notes on this class."
"And that's where I'm going to have to stop you," Alexis cut in. "You see, from what I hear, you're rooming with Bastion Misawa so why not get notes from him?"
"To be fair, I was going to ask him too, but the reason I came here first was actually kind of twofold; fold one being that I was thinking of starting an after school study group and was wondering if any of you would be interested in joining." I reasoned to the girls.
"And the second reason would be?" The trio nodded with varying degrees of understanding.
"I need one of you to get a message to Chazz if you have the opportunity." I replied apologetically though Alexis still looked nonplussed at the thought of having to talk to Chazz.
"We'll talk later at the Blue Eyes Cafe, but for now, it seems we all have gym."
"Uh right, see you in there, the gym that is." I replied quickly, noticing that we were in front of the women's locker room and that the men's one was on the opposite side of the hallway.
