Chapter 11: The Babies Are Coming
The day had started like any other, but for Rachel Berry, it was anything but ordinary. Two weeks had passed since Nationals, and life had been a whirlwind of performances, rehearsals, and preparing for the inevitable reality of motherhood. At 35 weeks pregnant with twins, Rachel had become used to the discomforts—swollen feet, constant heartburn, and the occasional bout of exhaustion. But today, there was something different. A nagging feeling in her stomach that wouldn't go away.
She sat in the back of the choir room, trying to focus on the lesson Mr. Schuester was teaching, but the dull pain in her lower abdomen kept distracting her. She shifted uncomfortably in her seat, squeezing her eyes shut for a moment, hoping it was just a false alarm.
The Glee club was buzzing with excitement for their upcoming performance at the regional showcase, and everyone was busy preparing for the final stretch of their senior year. Rachel had made it a point to keep her pregnancy a low-key topic. She didn't want the attention, not when Nationals had been such a success. But the pains in her stomach kept coming, sharper now, in a steady rhythm. Her breath hitched. Contractions, she realized, panic creeping up her spine.
I can't be in labor now, Rachel thought, forcing herself to stand and stretch as casually as possible. The last thing she wanted was to draw attention to herself.
But as she walked past Tina, who was sitting next to Artie, Tina gave her a curious look.
"Rachel, you okay?" Tina asked, her voice quiet but filled with concern. "You don't look so hot."
Rachel put on her best smile, masking the pain. "I'm fine, Tina. Just tired. It's nothing to worry about," she said through gritted teeth, trying to play it off.
Tina frowned but didn't press the issue. Instead, she leaned toward Artie, whispering under her breath.
"She's been off all day. Something's not right."
Rachel knew Tina wasn't convinced. Tina was one of the few people who could read her like a book, but she couldn't afford to let anyone else in on her secret just yet. Not until she was sure it was really happening.
The contractions were becoming more frequent now, every few minutes. She pressed her hand to her stomach and willed herself to stay calm, but it was becoming harder and harder to keep her composure.
Tina, growing more concerned, turned to Mr. Schue. "Mr. Schue, I think something's wrong with Rachel. You should check on her."
Mr. Schuester stopped mid-sentence and looked over at Rachel. He could see the discomfort written all over her face. But before he could ask her if she was okay, the door to the choir room opened, and Emma Pilsbury walked in, her face flushed with excitement.
"I just spoke to the doctor, and everything looks great for the twins," she said, grinning as she entered the room. "We've got the appointment tomorrow, and Will is so excited, but—"
She stopped mid-sentence, eyes widening as she noticed the sudden shift in the room. Rachel had gone pale, and she was gripping the edge of the piano for support.
"Rachel?" Emma's voice softened, her maternal instincts kicking in.
Rachel's face twisted with another sharp contraction, and she breathed in through her nose, trying not to make a scene.
"I'm fine," she managed to say, but her voice was shaky. "Just… just a little bit of pain."
Emma took a few cautious steps toward her. "Rachel, honey, you look like you're about to collapse. Maybe you should sit down and rest."
But before Rachel could respond, the sharp pain hit her again, and she gasped, clutching her stomach as a wave of dizziness overcame her.
It was at that moment that Tina leapt into action, looking frantically for someone to help. "Mr. Schue! Something's wrong. Rachel—"
Before she could finish, Emma's eyes widened in horror as a sudden burst of water splashed beneath her.
"My water—" Emma gasped, clutching her stomach. "Oh no... Will—" Her voice cracked as the pressure inside her intensified, and she suddenly looked panicked.
Mr. Schue was on his feet instantly. "Emma, it's okay. It's okay. We need to get you to the hospital now."
Emma's breathing grew shallow as she gripped the side of the piano. "I... I wasn't expecting this. The doctor said it could happen, but... today?"
Rachel, still in the midst of her own contractions, looked helplessly at her. "Emma, we need to get you to the hospital, too," she said, her voice strained as she tried to stay composed for her friend.
Suddenly, a new wave of pain hit Rachel. She gasped, her body stiffening as she tried not to show the panic rising in her chest.
Tina rushed to Emma's side, gently helping her sit down. "Mr. Schue, you have to call 911," she said urgently.
Will, who had been in the hall, burst into the room just as the situation hit full force. His eyes flicked from Emma, now breathing heavily, to Rachel, who was pale and clutching her stomach in pain.
"Emma, you're going into labor. I'm calling the hospital, okay? Don't panic."
"Will, the babies—" Emma gasped between breaths, trying to sit up straighter, her eyes frantic. "The triplets… I didn't know it was going to happen today."
"You're going to be okay," Will said, kneeling beside her. He had been expecting this moment, but nothing could have prepared him for how fast things were moving.
Emma's breathing was heavy now, and Rachel couldn't hold back anymore. Her contractions were coming faster, more intense. She felt lightheaded, and her body was beginning to shake.
She opened her mouth to say something, but only a soft whimper escaped her lips.
"Rachel? Rachel, what's happening?" Finn's voice cut through the chaos, and Rachel turned toward him, her face full of worry.
"I— I think the babies are coming too," she whispered, fighting through another wave of pain.
Finn's eyes widened in shock as he rushed toward her, kneeling beside her. "Are you sure? Are you in labor?"
Rachel nodded, her face pale and sweaty. "Yes… but Emma—"
"Mr. Schue, call 911 for Rachel too!" Tina said frantically as she helped Emma try to settle.
The door to the choir room burst open again, and Artie wheeled in with wide eyes. He took in the scene quickly. "Finn, you need to get Rachel to the hospital. I'll help Emma."
Finn stood frozen for a second, caught between his love for Rachel and the urgency of the moment. "Okay. Okay, we need to go. We're going to be okay, Rachel."
But it was clear that both women—Emma and Rachel—were in the middle of their most intense moments yet.
Will took Emma's hand, his voice now shaking. "We've got this, Em. You're not alone."
Rachel turned toward Finn, squeezing his hand tightly. "Don't leave me."
"I'm not going anywhere," Finn promised, his voice steady despite the chaos. He lifted her in his arms, carefully guiding her toward the door. "We're going to do this together."
And with that, the Glee club rushed into action, both Rachel and Emma in labor at the same time. As Will and Mr. Schue hurried to arrange their transport to the hospital, Artie did his best to support Emma, and Finn held Rachel, determined to stay by her side no matter what.
The sound of sirens echoed through the school as the two couples headed to the hospital, their futures about to change forever. The New Directions had come so far—and now, they would face their greatest challenge yet: bringing new life into the world, together.
