The Fire Nation cavalry approached slowly, but stopped well short of the palisade. Behind them, more figures appeared, some on komodo-rhinoback, others on foot. The Fire Nation had arrived. Soon, the entire treeline was a wall of red.
But nothing happened. The Fire Nation simply stood there.
"What are they waiting for?" The big man asked.
"Why didn't we see them?" Yue was baffled.
"They must have hidden themselves in the forest because they knew we would be overhead," Suki realised.
"Ah," Jet nodded sagely. "Clearly they're trying to bend the most important element of all."
"What?" Katara looked at him.
Jet turned and winked at her.
"Surprise, of course."
The rest groaned at his bad joke, although there were a few chuckles.
"If it's surprise they're after, then why are they waiting?"
"Maybe they're not ready yet."
"Then why reveal themselves?"
"To keep us here," Yue realised. "We can't leave while they're here, so the army is stuck."
"But why? Their army is here too, it's not like they can capitalise," Jet pointed out.
A moment later, as Yue turned to watch the Fire Nation army again, something bright arced through the sky towards her.
Oh good, she thought, they've brought artillery.
There must have been catapults hidden in the trees too, and now they began launching their fiery projectiles over the heads of the Fire Nation cavalry towards Jet's lines.
Soon more shots followed, the first crashing down just in front of Jet's positions, but more edging closer and closer until at last a stone smashed into the palisade, knocking it down and sending troops scurrying for cover. A moment later, the palisade had been swiftly repaired though, thanks to the earthbending of the soldiers.
But more kept coming, the zone of impact steadily creeping forwards towards where the Yuad was standing. Some shots landed right in the middle of formations, and the sound of screaming filled the air. Immediately Katara was rushing forwards, one hand on her waterskin.
"I'm a healer!" She yelled as she went. Yue looked at the others and then followed her.
By now, the air was thick with flaming rocks, and Yue was having to actively dodge them. She didn't have the earthbending, firebending or airbending to do anything about them.
For a moment she thought about Toph, and scowled.
"Avatar!" Jet followed her on his Ostrich-horse. "It's fine, we'll build shelters!"
He began yelling for his troops to dig in. Immediately holes began appearing in the ground around them, and soldiers began jumping in, seeking shelter from the bombardment.
"We should pull back!" Yue yelled at him.
"We can't!" Jet took a break from shouting at his troops to wheel back to face her. "The dam is straight that way!"
He gestured towards their rear.
"We can't let them get near it!"
A moment later, a shadow fell over him.
Yue's heart lurched.
"Look out!" She screamed. He looked up at her, his eyes wide, and a moment later was engulfed in dust and debris from a near miss. He was thrown from his ostrich-horse, which screeched and ran away as fast as it could.
Yue bolted towards him.
"Jet!" She yelled, falling to her knees beside him as Sokka and Suki appeared.
"Get Katara!" Yue shouted at them, and they nodded and rushed away. In all the chaos and confusion, few people appeared to have noticed, too busy cowering underground or dashing for cover. Rinzen knelt beside Yue and felt Jet's pulse.
"He's alive," he said. Soon Katara had arrived, and began bringing glowing water along Jet's body in an attempt to heal him.
Yue stood up, and looked around. The army was increasingly in disarray, and this was also obvious to Jet's deputies as they arrived, led by Longshot and the big man on the Komodo-rhino.
"Is he alright?" The man asked urgently.
"Er... I think so," Yue stuttered. She was finding it hard to think. This whole thing seemed like a bad idea. Why were they standing in a valley just letting themselves be shot at?
"We can't stay here," the man growled, drawing an enormous sword. "If Jet says we have to protect the dam, then that's what I'm going to do!"
Yue's eyes widened. The dam! Of course, it all came back to the dam. Suddenly it all made sense. This Fire Nation attack was specifically calculated to bring most of Jet's forces here, to this valley, this spot. Because the Fire Nation had never wanted surprise. Their plan was to quite literally wash Jet and his army away.
She turned to Longshot and his companion urgently.
"Listen," she said. "We have to get out of here right-"
"Charge!" The big man yelled, taking no notice of her as he pointed his sword at the Fire Nation and galloped away. "Charge! Attack!"
The remaining soldiers, including Longshot and the rest of the officers with him, looked at him, jumped out of their improvised trenches and bunkers, drew their weapons and began to charge, knowing that going forwards was better than staying here under the hail of artillery fire.
Yue watched them go with dismay. Then she turned to her friends.
"Listen," she said, "The Fire Nation are going to blow the dam. They must have sent people to sneak behind us and do it."
Everyone except Katara, who was busy, looked up at her in alarm.
"What can we do then?" Rinzen asked. "Tell them to run?"
"They are running, in the wrong direction," Yue gestured to the charging army.
"Won't the Fire Nation drown their own army?" Suki looked around. "That seems like it would be bad for them."
Yue thought of Prince Zuko, wherever he was, and grimaced.
"Look, either they have some special plan for that or they don't care about the lives of their men. And considering the Firelord's own son is on the run from him because he thinks he'll kill him, it's probably that."
She looked down at Jet.
"Will he be alright?"
Katara concentrated for a couple of seconds.
"I think so," she confirmed. "A lot of cuts and bruises and nasty blows though."
"Then we should get moving," Yue spun around. "We have to stop them blowing the dam."
"Shouldn't we tell them first?" Sokka asked.
"I don't think we'll be able to get through to enough people before they blow it," Yue said. "We have to go there."
"But what about him?" Katara looked down at Jet.
Yue hesitated for a second. They could take him, but he might want to stay here for the army. Then she shook her head.
"Can you carry him?" She asked.
"I guess..."
Yue turned and began hurrying away again, yelling over her shoulder as the rest of the Yuad began to get up and follow.
"Then bring him. You can carry on healing him on the way. Now come on!"
