Chaos and Consequences

Eve snapped, crossing her arms over her chest. "I'm here for answers. Not just about Avery or the CLF attack, but I also need your help to unlock Arthur's Astron blessing."

Colonel Green leaned back in his chair, his glowing purple eyes fixed on her with a calm, almost patronizing air. He let out a long sigh, tapping his fingers against the desk. "Always so direct, Eve. Very well. Let's address your concerns one at a time."

He stood, his towering frame casting long shadows across the room. "First," he began, "you're correct about Avery. I've also noticed his links to the CLF terror attack. And if you want to understand his motives, we need to look at the bigger picture—the Verdance Dynasty."

Arthur, sitting quietly beside Eve, winced as his head throbbed from the onslaught of new information. He stayed silent, his curiosity piqued despite the chaos.

Green gestured toward a holographic map of the Confederation that flickered to life above his desk. "The Verdance Dynasty has ruled the Confederation since its founding. Their power lies not just in their governance but in their control of Astronic abilities. Only the royal family, high-ranking officials, and the military are allowed to know about and train their Astronic powers."

Eve's eyes narrowed. "And the Covenant of Silence ensures that secret stays buried, doesn't it?"

Green nodded. "The Covenant of Silence is a document imbued with Astronic power by the first queen, The Primera. Anyone who signs it is mystically bound, unable to reveal the truth of Astronic powers to the public. Breaking the Covenant results in immediate, debilitating punishment."

Arthur, his curiosity finally getting the better of him, leaned forward. "Then how was Eve able to tell me about it?"

Green's lips twitched into a faint smile. "Cadets don't sign the Covenant until they graduate and officially join the military. Until then, they are… uninhibited in their speech."

Eve shot Arthur a quick look, her expression unreadable, before turning her attention back to Green. "So what does this have to do with Avery?"

Green's expression darkened. "Avery always questioned the monarchy's secrecy. Even as a cadet, he believed the public had a right to know about their blessings. But once he signed the Covenant, he was bound to silence. If he's linked to the CLF, it's likely he's either trying to force the monarchy to reveal the truth or destabilize the Confederation enough to seize control himself."

"That's just your opinion," Eve shot back, her tone biting.

Green inclined his head. "Indeed. But it's a well-informed one."

Arthur's mind raced, piecing together the fragments of what he'd learned. His head throbbed again, and he pressed a hand to his temple. "What about my Astronic blessing?" he started to ask, but Eve cut him off, her voice sharp.

"How do we stop Avery?"

Green's piercing gaze shifted to her. "Avery always had a fascination with Ouroboro," he said, his voice measured. "It's the largest arcology in the Confederation, a sprawling urban hub built atop and beneath the ruins of New York and Boston. Ouroboro's roots lie in the chaos of the Cataclysm, when underground cities were a refuge for survivors. If Avery's planning something, that's where you'll find answers."

Arthur glanced at Eve, but she didn't meet his eyes. Instead, she stepped closer to Green's desk, her hands resting on its edge. "Fine. Ouroboro it is. But we'll need more than just a destination. What about Arthur's blessing?"

Green turned his attention to Arthur, his expression softening slightly. "Unlocking your blessing is a two-step process," he explained. "The first step is understanding its nature—what it is, what it can do. The second step is understanding yourself. True resonance with your Astronic power comes from knowing your true self."

Arthur's brows furrowed. "And how am I supposed to do that?"

Green's faint smile returned. "That, young man, is something only you can answer. But I'd suggest you start by heading to Ouroboro. Perhaps the journey will reveal more than just answers about Avery."

The room fell silent as his words sank in. Arthur's mind churned with questions, but before he could voice them, Colonel Green's tone shifted, becoming colder, more formal. "But let me make one thing perfectly clear," he said, his voice cutting through the air like a blade. "If you do this, Eve, you'll be considered a criminal. Just like Avery."

Eve's eyes narrowed. "I'm already wanted," she said, her voice laced with defiance. "What's one more crime on the list?"

Colonel Green's gaze hardened. "It's not a joke, Eve. Your life will never be the same. And Arthur—both telling him about Astrons and deserting the Academy are crimes. If I didn't believe in your potential so much, I would have arrested you the second you walked into this office."

Arthur's stomach twisted. The gravity of their situation was finally sinking in, but when he glanced at her, he saw no fear, only determination.

"I don't care what happens to me," Eve said, her voice steady. "I'm not going to stand by while Avery tears everything apart. And Arthur deserves to know what he's capable of. If you can't help us, fine. We'll figure it out on our own."

The Defense Force Arrives

Eve continued to pace in front of Colonel Green's desk, the tension in the room high after his explanation about the Verdance Dynasty and the Covenant of Silence. Arthur stood silently, his thoughts swirling. He'd barely processed Colonel Green's cryptic advice about unlocking his Astronic blessing when the door burst open, slamming against the wall with a deafening bang.

In marched the Academy Defense Force, clad in sleek combat uniforms, their faces grim. At their head were members of the Military Police, in pale grey fatigues. Standing out among them was Carter, a tall, broad-shouldered cadet whose confident smirk made Arthur's skin crawl.

"Eve Meadows," barked one of the MPs, a woman with a face as cold and unyielding as steel. "You are under arrest for going AWOL and for breaching Academy protocol by bringing a civilian onto the grounds. Surrender peacefully, and this won't get messy."

Eve crossed her arms and snorted. "Oh, it's already messy. I'm not going anywhere with you."

Carter stepped forward, his gaze flicking between Eve and Arthur. His smirk widened. "Really, Eve? You went from me to... this?" He gestured at Arthur with a dismissive wave. "A basic civilian? That's a downgrade if I've ever seen one."

Arthur's face burned with anger and embarrassment. "Hey! I—"

"Oh, shut up," Carter interrupted, rolling his eyes. "You're out of your depth, kid. Why don't you just sit there and let the grown-ups handle this?"

Arthur shot to his feet, fists clenched. "Say that again, I dare you!"

Carter's grin turned wolfish. "Gladly." In a blur of motion, Carter closed the distance, his fist connecting with Arthur's jaw before he could react. Arthur hit the floor hard, groaning in pain as Carter loomed over him, pressing a boot down on his chest.

"Weak," Carter sneered, shaking his head. "No wonder she's bored with you."

"That's it!" Eve's voice erupted, fiery and unrestrained. Her body flared with heat, the temperature in the room skyrocketing as waves of shimmering distortion radiated from her. Her hands ignited with glowing flames, the air around her crackling. "Get your damn foot off him, Carter!"

Colonel Green, still seated behind his desk, steepled his fingers and watched impassively.

Carter barely had time to move before Eve attacked. She unleashed a torrent of searing heat, not in the form of flames but in oppressive, focused waves that distorted the air and caused the floor beneath Carter to bubble and warp. He stumbled back, cursing as the soles of his boots began to melt.

The cadets and military police sprang into action with precision, their training taking over in the face of Eve's fiery defiance. A cadet with lunged to the front, slamming his hand into the ground to summon a glowing, translucent barrier. Eve's searing heat clashed against it, dissipating harmlessly like water striking rock. Behind the shield, another cadet with raised her arms, and a pulse of dazzling light erupted from her, filling the room with blinding intensity. Eve instinctively shielded her eyes, momentarily losing her bearings.

From the side, tendrils formed from one of the military police hands, writhing and darting like ghostly serpents. They lashed out toward Eve with unnerving speed, seeking to ensnare her. Eve ducked and rolled, narrowly avoiding the spectral limbs as they slashed through the air around her. With a snarl, she unleashed focused bursts of superheated energy, the tendrils disintegrating in flashes of steam and ash when they drew too close.

"Stay down!" barked another military policeman, propelling himself across the room like a blur, attempting to flank Eve. But Eve pivoted, sending a wave of heat at him, forcing him to dive for cover behind a desk.

Suddenly a female cadet surged forward, her body glowing faintly, as Eve felt the oppressive tug on her Astronic energy as the cadet approached. Her legs wavered, and she clenched her fists, focusing on maintaining her strength. "Get out of my way!" she shouted, summoning a vortex of heat that knocked the cadet back before he could reach her.

Despite her power, the attackers were relentless, their coordination impeccable. A military policewoman moved with calculated precision, slipping through the chaos. Eve was so preoccupied dodging and countering the others that she barely noticed her until it was too late. A soft hand brushed her arm, and her entire body froze.

"No!" Eve gasped, her limbs locking up as the paralysis spread through her. Her body betrayed her, collapsing onto the floor with a dull thud.

Arthur, still on the ground beneath Carter's boot, clawed at the floor, trying desperately to reach her. "Eve!" he shouted, his voice hoarse with frustration.

Carter looked down at him with a mocking sneer. "Stay down, Snowflake."

Arthur, fueled by anger, grabbed at Carter's leg, but Carter leaned in, pressing harder with a laugh. "You've got guts, I'll give you that. But you're way out of your league."

Grace's Arrival

Suddenly, the sharp, deafening cracks of gunfire erupted, cutting through the tension like a knife. The cadets and MPs cried out as they collapsed one by one, clutching their knees in agony. The room filled with chaos as figures fell, the air thick with the acrid scent of gunpowder.

Standing in the doorway, Grace moved with eerie calm, her twin pistols aimed with deadly precision. Each shot found its mark, a calculated takedown that left the soldiers incapacitated but alive. Her movements were fluid, a dance of destruction that exuded confidence and control.

"What the hell?" Carter exclaimed, his cocky demeanor evaporating. He reached for his weapon, but Grace was faster. A single shot rang out, the bullet colliding with his wrist sending him staggering back with a yelp of pain. He collapsed against a desk, clutching his wounded arm.

Ignoring the chaos around her, Grace strode toward Arthur, stepping over groaning cadets without sparing them a glance. Her boots clicked against the floor, her pistols still smoking in her hands. She knelt beside Arthur, her gloved fingers tilting his chin upward with a firm but almost tender touch.

"You're lucky I was in the area," she murmured, her lips curling into a sly smile. Her voice was smooth, dripping with flirtation, and her piercing gaze locked onto his.

Arthur blinked, utterly bewildered. His voice caught in his throat, unable to form a coherent response. Eve, still paralyzed but fully aware of the scene, seethed inwardly at the audacity of the mysterious woman.

Grace straightened, holstering her pistols with a practiced motion. She turned to leave, casting a final glance over her shoulder. Her eyes gleamed with amusement as she caught sight of Eve's furious expression. "I think your friend will be here soon," she said casually.

Bolts to the Rescue

Before Eve could respond, the sound of shattering concrete and screeching metal filled the room. The wall exploded inward, debris flying in all directions as an armored vehicle burst through the wreckage. The roar of its engine drowned out all other noise as it screeched to a halt.

The door flew open, and Bolts stepped out with a wide grin, his eyes scanning the room. "I knew y'all would keep things entertaining," he drawled, clapping his hands together. "I don't know what your plans are, but count me in!"

Without waiting for a response, Bolts grabbed Eve and Arthur, hauling them into the back of the vehicle as if they weighed nothing. "Time to go!" he shouted, climbing into the driver's seat.

"Wait!" Eve yelled, but Bolts was already behind the wheel. He floored the accelerator, the armored car crashing through the remains of Colonel Green's office. The Colonel, remarkably, remained seated, calmly brushing dust off his desk.

The car roared across campus, bullets and Astronic powers flying past as cadets and MPs scrambled to stop them. Inside, Arthur clung to a strap for dear life, his heart pounding.

"What the hell is happening?" he shouted.

"That's what I'd like to know!" Eve snapped, glaring at him. "Who the hell was she, Arthur? And why are you so close?"

Arthur stammered, his face red. "I-I don't know! She just showed up!"

"She just showed up?" Eve's voice was laced with anger and something else she refused to name. "And what was with that wink? And grabbing your chin? Oh, and let's not forget how she's freaking gorgeous and tall. Great. Just great."

Bolts laughed from the front seat, clearly enjoying the chaos. "I missed you guys. This is fun."

Eve's glare turned to Bolts. "You are not helping!"

As the car sped through the Academy's gates, narrowly avoiding another explosion, Arthur slumped back in his seat, overwhelmed. The chaos of the day had left him exhausted, but one thing was clear: their journey was far from over. And with Eve, Bolts, and now Grace in the mix, things were only going to get more complicated.
