DM The Long Walk Chapter 1

The Gru family was in the countryside waiting for Poppy Prescott. She was going to join them for a walk in the countryside. At last, she arrived with her parents. ''Hey, guys'' said Poppy. ''Poppy!'' chorused the family. ''Thank you for taking Poppy out for the day Ch, er Mr Gru'' said Perry. ''Anytime'' smiled Gru. They made arrangements when Patsy and Perry would pick up Poppy, then they left her with the Gru family. ''Everybody ready?'' asked Lucy. ''Yup! I've got everything we need!'' said Edith, ''A whistle just in case we get separated. A compass. Some food''. ''And the map?'' asked Margo. ''Oh! I have it'' said Dru getting it out of his white coat, ''Here it is''. But Poppy and the rest of the Gru family were already walking on ahead.

''Hey! Wait for me!'' cried Dru hurrying after them. Poppy and the Gru family walked alongside the canal. Past a few trees and rocks before the path was disappearing. Agnes chased a butterfly which left the trio. ''Let's go! We're getting left behind!'' Poppy called after her. The four girls tried to catch up with the grown ups. But they were too late. ''Where have they gone?'' asked Margo. ''We lost them!'' wailed Edith. She thought she might cry. Edith had got lost before the superstore once and didn't want to be lost again. ''Don't worry, guys. Let's stay together and listen to me and Poppy. I'm the oldest'' said Margo. ''So am I'' Poppy pointed out.

''Yeah, I know I'm only twelve and your…'' said Margo. ''Fourteen'' said Poppy.

''Can we just find Mom, Dad and Uncle Dru?'' asked Agnes. ''Oh, right'' said Margo. So they did. Meanwhile the grown ups noticed there was no sign of Margo, Edith, Agnes and Poppy. ''Oh no! We lost the girls!'' gasped Lucy. ''What?!'' cried Gru. ''Wow, that was magic'' remarked Dru. ''Edith? Poppy?'' called Gru. ''Margo?! Agnes!'' called Lucy. At that point, the girls were walking across the meadow when Agnes saw a scarecrow. ''Ahh! What is that?!'' she shrieked. ''It's all right Agnes, it's just an old scarecrow'' said Margo. Edith chased the crows away. ''Shoo! Shoo!'' she said waving her arms. ''Come on, Agnes. It won't hurt you. It's not even alive'' said Edith. The other three girls joined her to look at the scarecrow.

''It doesn't look so scary with a face like that'' said Edith. ''Aw, it looks very sad'' said Agnes. Poppy sniffed at the scarecrow, ''Pooh! And smelly'' she said, ''Come on, guys. We better get going. It's starting to get cloudy''. The girls left the scarecrow. ''Bye, Mr. Scarecrow'' said Agnes. ''Cheer up'' added Edith. Later on the girls sat down to eat their picnic food. All the searching and walking had made them hungry. They had their sandwiches and cakes. ''We've been walking for miles'' said Margo when they had all finished. ''Let's look at the map then'' suggested Poppy. ''We can't. Mom and Dad have it'' said Edith pulling something small and round out of her hat, ''Luckily I have my compass. That'll help us''. ''OK. Which way should we go?'' asked Margo. ''Uhhh, that's North. So we need to go, uhhhh…across the field! Come on!'' replied Edith.

The four girls climbed over a gate into the field. Neither one of them noticed the warning sign saying: DANGER, BULL IN FIELD, DO NOT ENTER. ''Are you sure we're going the right way?'' asked Margo. ''Yup'' replied Edith. Margo, Agnes and Poppy spotted something huge and ferocious which made them absolutely terrified, they gasped with shock and in anxiety. ''Oh, no...!'' said Poppy hardly daring to breathe, ''Edith, we need to go back''. ''Why? This is the right way'' said Edith, her eyes glued to the compass. ''Edith, we have to go'' insisted Margo. Edith finally looked up as a shadow covered her. She was face to face with a big black angry bull! It snorted making Edith's hair and tassels of her hat flap up a bit and she dropped her compass in surprise.

Poppy put each of her arms in front of Margo and Agnes to try and protect them as they slowly backed away. ''Edith, don't run, walk back very slowly'' whispered Poppy as she got Edith behind her too. The bull followed the four girls. ''He's coming towards us'' said Margo. ''MURRRRRRRGGHHHHHH!'' growled the bull. The girls screamed and ran. They reached the gate just in time. Margo and Poppy helped Edith and Agnes climb over since they were smaller.
