It had been a long day.

With each passing week, crime had been escalating at a slow but steady rate across various parts of the planet. While the Justice League and other major organizations had done an amazing job bringing down crime in major cities, criminals were simply moving their operations to third-world countries and remote areas to cause havoc. Due to international relations, publicity, and the League's cooperation with various governments, lots of bureaucratic red tape started to pop up—especially in countries where stubborn and proud officials insisted on doing things their own way. All in all, this meant the Young Justice team was busier than ever, taking on more low-key missions. Even Naruto was showing signs of exhaustion.

So, when things finally seemed to settle down for a while, Naruto decided to curl up on the couch in the Mountain and watch a movie. It had been so long since he'd had a break that all he wanted was to sit back and relax. He'd be doing it on his own tonight since the others were with their mentors (except Superboy, who was off training with Black Canary).

Taking advantage of the peace and quiet, Naruto flipped through the channels until he finally settled on that night's movie: the remake of Friday the 13th. Lately, he'd found himself oddly drawn to horror films. Maybe it was the demon sealed inside him, or maybe his time fighting in a war as a child soldier left him so desensitized that a few jump scares didn't faze him anymore. He wasn't completely sure why.

"Hello…" a voice greeted him from behind.

Startled, Naruto almost dropped his can of grape soda. He turned to see M'gann standing there, waving slightly and wearing a wary smile.

"Oh, hey," he said, setting his soda on the table. "I thought you were with your uncle."

"There was an emergency in the South Pacific," she explained. "He volunteered to handle it, but he wasn't sure how long it would take. He told me I should come back here in the meantime."

Her gaze shifted to the TV screen. "Are you watching a movie? Can I join you?" She perked up hopefully, and when Naruto nodded, her eyes lit up. "Great! I'll get the popcorn," she said, floating off to the kitchen.

Naruto had an inkling M'gann might soon regret her choice. From what he knew, she preferred romantic comedies. Still, underneath her cheerful, girly exterior, she also had a strong, empathetic side—lighthearted yet surprisingly deep. It made sense that she wanted to spend time with him, even if he couldn't see her fully enjoying a slasher flick.

That suspicion was confirmed about ten minutes in.

"Oh my Mars!" she cried out when the movie abruptly cut to a pretty explicit sex scene. Her whole face (and most of her body) seemed to turn a bright tomato-red.

"It's a horror movie, M'gann," Naruto sighed, feeling a little embarrassed on her behalf. "For some reason they always try to shove random sex scenes in there—even when it doesn't make any sense. And don't worry," he added, "they're, uh, not actually having sex. At least, I don't think they are." He eyed her as the heat practically radiated off her flushed cheeks.

The movie rolled on, and the two of them kept munching popcorn. Naruto actually didn't see why Friday the 13th was so universally panned. Maybe nostalgia had made people picky.

"I don't like this," M'gann moaned, hugging her knees as more unfortunate campers wound up as victims. "We're only twenty minutes in, and so many people have died! That's… horrible! Why is that guy killing everyone?"

"It's a horror movie, M'gann." Naruto tried to reassure her. "Look, after this, we can pick something you like. Sound good?"

She nodded reluctantly, eyes glued to the screen. A few seconds later, she let out a scream at a particularly gruesome scene, startling Naruto so badly that he sent the popcorn bowl rocketing up in the air. It upended itself, and popcorn showered them both. He and M'gann exchanged wide-eyed looks for a moment, then erupted in laughter.

"At least we have chocolate, right?" he joked, grabbing a candy bar from beside the couch.

Then the killer on screen launched into another horrifying attack. M'gann shrieked again and all but leaped into Naruto's lap, clinging to him with a vice-like grip around his neck. Under normal circumstances, Naruto would be flustered about a pretty girl scrambling onto him, but after everything he'd experienced—fan-girl attention, combined with his own unique background—he was a bit more used to this sort of thing.

Well, sort of used to it. He wasn't used to super-powered girls. M'gann was stronger than she realized, and it almost felt like she was going to crush him. But as she clung, Naruto couldn't help noticing how she squirmed in his lap, her skirt hitching higher along her thighs. Am I a terrible person for thinking about how soft her legs look? he wondered guiltily. Worse yet, his mind wandered to the fact that she was a shapeshifter—she could take any form at will. Nope, not going there.

Time crawled by; the movie finally hit a slower stretch. Naruto took the chance to recap some of the backstory for M'gann. Based on her reaction, he was sure she wasn't about to become a Friday the 13th devotee. She turned her head toward him with another question, just as he shifted to ask if they should pause for her sake. Their lips brushed, and they simultaneously froze.

Wide-eyed and embarrassed, M'gann bolted to the other side of the couch. The sudden distance gave Naruto an unwelcome chill, though he couldn't blame her. Fumbling to break the silence, M'gann tore open another chocolate bar and popped it into her mouth.

"That was… nice," Naruto ventured awkwardly. M'gann looked up at him, then quickly looked away, cheeks still flushed.

"Naruto, I… you, and me…" she stammered, her own mind spinning with what she'd just tasted—grape soda, popcorn, chocolate, and something else entirely. She could also sense the swirl of emotions in him.

Before he could overthink it, Naruto moved closer, cupped her cheek, and kissed her again. The moment lasted just a few seconds before he pulled back.

"S-sorry," he gasped, cheeks hot. "I guess I still act before I think sometimes." He started to rise and leave, his heart hammering. But M'gann grabbed his hand, halting him.

"I… I didn't dislike it," she confessed. Her voice was soft, but she met his eyes shyly.

Naruto blinked. "But… I thought you liked Superboy." For ages, he'd seen her give Conner not-so-subtle doe-eyed looks.

"I think he's cute," she admitted, "but I don't really know him. Not like I know you." She squeezed his hands. "I know you love orange… your favorite food is ramen… you like to garden, you're a natural with animals…" She smiled a little. "And whenever your teammates are sad, you do your best to cheer them up."

Naruto opened his mouth to speak, but she leaned in again. This kiss was deeper. M'gann committed fully to it, the way she committed to everything she did—with eagerness and heart. When it ended, she drew back, both of them flushed and grinning.

"Yeah," she murmured. "I'm sure."

Naruto quickly shut off the TV. "What about the movie?" M'gann asked, eyebrows raised.

"Nah," he said, tugging gently on her hand, "I've got something a lot more interesting right in front of me. C'mon… want to look at the stars?"

She nodded, smiling shyly as they headed outside. Under the glow of the full moon, Naruto and M'gann ventured into the quiet, still night to figure out exactly what their kiss—and this new closeness—might mean.
