Ghost and SkekMal stared in utter shock at the sight before them. Both jaws dropped to the floor. The black pelt that Deet had originally held on to was now walking around. It even approached Ghost as the silver-white pelt came alive once more and voiceless bleat out. Ghost had to put it down as she was trying to get her bearings.
"So…" She took her soup from Drum and sat down into her chair. "How long has that been going on?"
"Around the time when Drum made lunch," Gurjin answered. He licked his thumb of the extra sweet peachberry pie that Hup and Drum made together. "I have to admit, he's really gotten good at it. He might even make Gourmand a run for his money."
Drum shook his head. "Don't say that Gurjin. He's got more experience." He lifted a treat for Peepers. "I have this treat that only works with bugs…" He turned to Orchid and Shield with a guilty look. "No offense."
Orchid shook her head. "None taken. Actually, those things really are delicious." Then, she lowered her head. "I…just wish."
Shield lowered a leg on her shoulder. "Yeah. I miss them too." The two hugged.
For a while everyone was silent. Unable to know how to break off the tension in the air. Then, SkekLach raised a claw. "Soooo…What's our next plan?"
The All-Maudra thought for a moment. "It'd be best if we move now. We may be lucky that they didn't attack us if they know what happened to Rowenina." She faced SkekTek. "Frostcrystal should be all right with it? Correct?"
SkekTek nodded. Then, he lifted what looked like reins. The cloth was torn in several places. Some ends needed to be retied.
Brea and Deet sighed. "We'll get started," Brea said. She was about to reach for it when she felt a tap on her shoulder. She looked up to see Sparks pointing at the rope. Then, herself.
Brea raised a brow. "You…want to help?"
Sparks nodded. She clapped with joy while jumping up and down.
SkekOk raised a brow. "My, My…That one seems to communicate well without speaking."
SkekVar grimaced. He briefly met Sparks' eyes before he turned away from her. Then, he made his way to the door.
SkekLach soured his face. "What's with him?" He pointed at the door.
Ghost, halfway through her soup, sighed. "I think I know. I'll go talk to him." She down the last of her soup and wiped her mouth with a napkin that SkekEkt handed to her. "Thank you Ekty."
The Ornamentalist nodded. He watched the white Gelfling set her bowl down and head out.
SkekSo stopped her. His dark robes were a bit tattered. Dried blood covered the sleeves. "Before you do your usual heart magic, we still need to know where to go next."
Ghost thought for a moment. Her arms crossed. "If I remember the map correctly, we're still in the northern part of the Endless Forest. Vapran soldiers would be there."
Drum raised a paw. "Wouldn't they listen since we have physical proof?"
Brea shook her head. She pulled out a map of Thra so they could have a better idea of where they were. She took a piece of charcoal and made a tiny dot in the green area that was only a few feet away from Vapran territory.
Mother Aughra patted Drum on the back. "Fair try, Drum. However, even if we do have proof, Chancellor would find some way to convince everyone that it's a trick."
At that, everyone else muttered in agreement. This led to several head scratches until Kylan raised a hand. "I have a proposal. Why not head to the plains? My clan might listen."
Gurjin raised a hand. "Uh…I'm no genius but wouldn't we expose ourselves going over there? There's less trees compared to the swamp."
Tavra shook her head. "It's a farther trek. Especially with all the debris."
Orchid scratched her head. "What about the river?"
Ghost bit her lip. She exchanged a look with SkekMal. Even SkekSa, the Mariner, was holding a nervous expression on her face. To her surprise, Lazul crawled into the room before he settled onto Ghost's back.
"I'm afraid there's now a creature in it," Lazul answered. His one eye-half lidded. "Spotted it when we found the others."
Rian sighed. "So, looks like we'll have to do the plains. If it's the one chance we can get to meet a Gelfling that'll listen to us…Worth a shot."
They soon began to discuss what to do when they get there. What should be stocked. What to say to the Maudra of the Sprition clan as well as what sort of proof that it wasn't a trick. Then, they began to scatter as they began making preparations.
Ghost finally took this as an opportunity to talk with SkekVar. However, she couldn't find him the moment she stepped outside. The sky above her was already a mauve color. The first set of stars coming out. She looked around for Var. Silently praying that he didn't get into any kind of trouble.
"Var!" She yelled as she dared. Her ears strained to find any sound that could be potential enemies nearby. She didn't want it to be the flutter of Gelfling wings as well but the situation is too dire to think about that. Suddenly, she smelled something. Something burning. "Var!"
"Shhh! Keep it down!" SkekVar's voice was a husky grumble. He soon appeared, holding a stick in his hand. It held a few burning embers.
Ghost ran over to him. Her heart was ready to burst. "What in Thra happened?" Her eyes widened at the stick. "Why's that burning?"
SkekVar grabbed the orange end and crushed it. The smoldering wood crumpled in his hand. He shook his hand. Then, he inspected it. He began to walk back to the house. He was able to reach the steps until Ghost stepped in front of him.
"We need to talk!" Ghost's voice was firm. Her orange eye began to glow.
"Everything's fine," SkekVar answered. "I just…needed to be away from the others for a bit."
"You mean away from Sparks." Ghost formed a deep frown. She crossed her arms.
"I don't know what you're talking about." SkekVar tried to move but Ghost followed him. "Ghost move!"
"No." Ghost face went firm. "I know you Var. When you're done sulking, your anger has a tendency to explode without proper talk."
SkekVar sighed. "Of course…" His shoulders sagged in defeat. He sat down on the steps. Ghost went next to them. He gave a frustrated snort. "It's just…How…I can barely understand her. I was only able to know danger because she was there."
"So, you can understand her." Ghost lightly touched him. Her eyes met his. "Maybe not in the context as the others do, but you do. Yours is just the recognition of when you go too far. You would sometimes look at soldiers and place them on certain shifts if they are met."
SkekVar gave a sad laugh. "Unfortunately, they would at least talk back. She…she can't."
"I'm sure it was as frustrating for her as it did you." Ghost rubbed her temples. She could feel Lazul adjusting to her movements.
SkekVar nodded. He looked at his hands. "That…and there's another reason I was here."
Lazul's arms wrapped around his right hand. They slithered up and down. The Djinn paid no mind to the uncomfortable stare The General was giving him. Then, Ghost yanked him away. His eye now looked at her face.
"Lazul!" Ghost lips went to form a deep frown. "What did I say about boundaries?"
Lazul gave no expression of embarrassment. "Forgive me my mistress, but I noticed that he smells strongly of fire. As well as giving off an energy that's starting to become his."
Ghost tilted her head. "What do you mean?"
SkekVar grimaced. "I think he's referring to this." He opened his palm wide. Within moments a small flame appeared.
Ghost nearly jumped out of her seat. Eyes wide. Mouth opened wide. It was soon closed with Lazul's help.
"I figured you'd react like that." SkekVar chortled. "Started when I was with Sparks. Don't know how to use it yet."
"Uhhh…" Ghost hesitated. She didn't like the answer to her future question, but it can't be ignored. "You didn't make a big fire out there…did you?"
"Course not!" He scoffed. "All I did was grab a few fallen logs. Some branches and a huge pile of leaves went only five feet away from the site."
"That…" Ghost shook her head. "Really isn't enough." She turned to Lazul. "Do we have enemies encroaching on us?"
Lazul's eye narrowed. Ghost could've sworn that it held a hint of annoyance. "Indeed. They're investigating the fire. Looks like we'll head to the plains sooner than expected."
(Later that night)*
The crew had managed to get Treesong to move. SkekTek offered to steer the Forest Saurio while everyone tried to get the house cleaned up and have dinner made. SkekVar, being the guilty party to their unplanned departure, was incharge of washing dishes and organizing weapons. The cleaning was easy but cooking….was a different story for Hup, Drum and Gourmand.
"Watch out!" Drum yelled as some of his ingredients began to roll away from his side of the counter. They were dangerously close to tainting SkekAyuk's roasted meat that SkekMal had managed to grab before they left. He tried to keep his eyes on the fragile plates that swayed with Treesong's footsteps.
SkekAyuk snatched the jars before they broke. "It may have been many trines but I still got it." He ducked as Drum swung his tail at him. "Be careful, you clown!"
"Sorry." Drum adjusted his tail. He was able to get some of his dishes done but now he was trying his best not to spill it all on the floor. He used one claw to allow Peepers on top of his head. "Here you go. This should prevent you from getting trampled."
The Grunak frantically tried to grab the pot that Magln was in. The Black Briar was just giggling like a child as if to enjoy the ride. Then, some of the pots began to rattle against one wall as Treesong hurriedly climbed over a large tree trunk. Upon seeing this, Moren rushed up and pressed his body against the wall.
Hup had managed to make his soup before he laid down on the floor. The nausea came in severe waves. Room spinning. His spoon rattled by his side. "Make room…stooop."
Drum shook his head as he placed his dishes down on the table. "Sorry Hup, we need to wait for the all clear. It's a good thing SkekTek is a quick learner."
SkekAyuk grunted as his large platter of meat landed in the center with a loud thud. He panted. "He's not called 'The Scientist' for nothing."
Drum was able to peel Hup off the floor with help from the Grunak. They set him on a chair and managed to get his spoon on the table despite it sliding from one spot to the next. Hup only groaned his thanks before he laid his head on the table.
SkekAyuk chuckled. "So much for being a tough Podling Paladin." He teased to his shock, his hand was met with a hardy thwack of Hup spoon. He pulled it back in sheer surprise. He glared at Hup.
Drum raised a claw between the two. "Come on, you two. Things are rocking a lot as it is. Plus, Mother Aughra might yell at you guys again." He lowered his arm. "I'll go see if Frostcrystal is up. She might know of some medicine for Hup's sickness."
Drum felt Peepers shift slightly on his head as he made his way out of the kitchen and up the stairs. He wobbled a bit on the steps but he found it to have a nice rhythm. It reminded him of The Ornamentalist creating those tunes that brought Ghost back to them. His tail swayed as he reached the next step. Peepers let out a happy chirp.
A whine filled his ears. It was high-pitched and sad. Almost child-like. He turned to the direction further to the left. As he got closer, the whining only got louder. Sniffling followed as well.
"Mother…" Sobbing echoed through a pale-blue door. It was Frostcrystal's voice.
Drum bit his lip. Ear slightly pressed to the door. She must be waking up from her head injury…I wonder if Amein is nearby?
"Shhh…" A soft voice was heard. It was…SkekSo?! "It's all well…It's all well…"
Drum stumbled back in shock. What's he doing there? I thought they hated each other!
A sniffle followed. "Where…Where am I? Why do I feel like everything's shaking? Are we under attack?"
"No…" SkekSo's voice was surprisingly soft, but it whistled a bit due to it being broken. "We're just getting some distance. It seems SkekVar somehow got a pile of wood ablaze so we had to leave before they find us."
"Where are we going?" A slight shift indicated that Frostcrystal was trying to get up. Then, the rustling of sheets grew consistent as she nestled back down.
Drum felt something sit in his stomach. Something hard. He knocked on the door. "Um…Excuse me…May I come in?"
"Of course Drum," SkekSo said. He sounded a bit annoyed but there was some refinement. "Make it quick."
Drum opened the door. He tried his best not to stare at SkekSo's beak. The Skeksis Emperor had a bandage on top of it. However, there seemed to be some blood seeping out. As for Frostcrystal, her head was heavily wrapped. Her eyes were a bit unfocused, but it seems as though she's just a bit rattled.
Drum cleared his throat. "Dinner's ready." The whole room shook followed by the large thump. "I…think…Best hurry before it gets cold." He bowed and hurried away.
(Sometime later)*
SkekTek scarfed down his meal with no problem. His arm quickly brought Drum's soup into his beak. He gulped down his water. No one could blame him for his somewhat boorish manners, The Scientist steered Treesong through the forest the majority of the way. He grabbed a few scraps of food and handed it to Nova.
Nova chirped. Her beak took the food with ease. She was able to eat without spreading crumbs on SkekTek's robe.
"Glad you're enjoying my food," Drum said. He ate some mashed fruit and fungus Mother Aughra introduced him to. It had a strong earthy flavor. It made him very excited to spread it to the others.
"Can't say I blame him," Gurjin said. "He's been steering Treesong for a long period. He barely got any sleep from what I remember." He bit into his fruit. He licked his lips in delight.
"Thank you for reminding me of that wonderful flaw, but so have you." SkekTek pointed his fork at Gurjin before going back to his meal.
"Fair enough." Grujin wiped his face with his sleeve before continuing.
Deet turned to Hup. Beside her, she petted the strange living pelt on the head. She could see the Podling finally eating his food after being in his chair for a long period of time.
Hup purred as he ate his own soup. He turned to Drum. "Thank you, Drum. Drum saved soup."
Drum chuckled. "It was nothing. I was just glad nothing broke this time around." He yawned. He began to rub his eyes. "Sorry…for some reason…I feel really heavy."
Ghost smiled. "You're tired. You've been so used to sleeping of your own free will that your body is sensitive to it."
All the Skeksis, except SkekMal laughed at this. "You should know," SkekOk said to Ghost. His beak pointed towards her. "There were times I caught you reading late into the night."
Ghost blushed. Her fork went back to her fish. She felt her own pelt friend snuggle against her hip. Her mind went back to what Deet had discovered. She looked at the living black pelt. It did seem to bore some resemblance to the sisters from the story, but surely it couldn't be a coincidence, could it?
Frostcrystal, who was stuck with a puzzled expression on her face the entire dinner, spoke. Her eyes weren't covered by the blindfold this time. "Let me get this straight…You were able to find a black stone on the ground and managed to merge it with the pelt?"
Deet nodded. Everyone else followed along with some mutterings. This only made Frostcrystal rub her temples as gently as she could. She took a sip of her tea that Tavra made for her when it came to head injuries.
Frostcrystal sighed. "Well…I guess we're going to have to look for more stones. I could mean those 'hearts' could be the only key to settle this nightmare."
Amien popped out of the pot. His arm extended and grabbed what resembled to be a biscuit. He devoured it in one chomp before speaking. "That's good in theory but we also need to figure out how to be rid of the bone court for good."
"And those shadow titans," Naia said. "They're still on the loose and those monsters look as though they can do real damage."
"Only the sisters can defeat them," Frostcrystal countered. "Our best option is to put distance until we can find a way to locate the remaining fragments." She took a bite of her meat. Her teeth gleamed in the fire light. Her tail wagged slightly. "It might help us find our miracle queen."
Ghost tilted her head. "Miracle Queen?"
Cerebrite adjusted his glasses. His eyes were bright. "I've heard about it. There's even a prophecy about it." He pulled out a scroll. He moved his empty plate away to reveal an image of eyes looking at strange black shapes that seemed to be entwined with the monsters. Thick black letters crowded the paper.
Everyone leaned in to have a closer look. SkekOk adjusted each of his spectacles to make it out. Frostcrystal tried her best to move forward, but she gripped her head and slunk back down.
Kylan shook his head. "I can't make this out. Anyone else want to try?"
SkekOk adjusted his glasses. He cleared his throat. He began to read the prophecy out loud:
"Three maidens. Three celestials. Combine into one. With the help of nine shadows, could the evil be undone. Look for the moon under the earth. For her gentle nature can create rebirth. Look for the sun which wears a crown. For her desire for truth is what will prevent the grass from turning brown. Look for the maiden with the eyes of stars. Though her body is weak, her true strength will take her people far.
Nine shadows that shall come to aid, must learn the truth of how they're made. Each is gifted and blessed, but must undo their own evil before doing the rest. Nine eyes they have swallowed. Nine keys must be used. They must accept a fate they can't refuse."
Everyone was silent for a moment. The only thing that seemed to be going would be Gales waving her little spoon around and the crackling of the fire. Then, they all set back down into their seats.
Gurjin sighed. "Well…that doesn't tell us a lot."
Brea thought for a moment. Her thumb and forefinger on her chin. "Well…The three maidens must represent the celestial bodies. Maybe it's from a clan."
Frostcrystal shook her head. She took another bite of her food. Her fingers rubbed at her temples.
Deet raised her hand. "Maybe it could be referring to the sisters and we have to find them."
SkekTek raised a brow. "That can be a possibility given how the black pelt is starting to resemble the Moon sister."
Drum let out a yawn. "I'm sorry but can we figure it out in the morning? I'm starting to see pillows among the pots."
"Same…" Hup admitted.
"That's fine," Frostcrystal said. A relieved smile on her face. "I suppose we're far enough that we're safe, but if you don't mind me asking…What caused you all to run again?"
Everyone stared at SkekVar. The general slunk down in his chair. His head lowered for any contact. His eyes darted from Sparks to his food.
"I…think it's something to discuss for another time." Ghost got off her chair and made her to the entrance of the kitchen. "Goodnight." She left with the Fizzgigs behind her.
Everyone took their leave from the table. All but Frostcrystal. She ate her food. Amein nestled onto her shoulders.
—-(The next morning)-
Ghost let out a yawn. Lazul and the pelt draped on her back. Her eyes are a bit blurry from sleep. She rubbed them as she made her way down the stairs. Then, she noticed a large figure standing in the doorway of the front entrance. She walked over to realize that it was none other than Mother Aughra.
The Elderly Seer was staring off into the distance. Her bandages were removed. However, she smelled of herbs. She didn't even turn her head as Ghost approached her. "Up and about I see."
Ghost nodded. "Yes…Despite what happened, I don't feel as tired."
Mother Aughra gave her a sideways glance. "Surely it's not because the Hunter was so close to you yesterday?"
At that, Ghost's face turned beet red. "Well…I…Uh-" She fiddled with her fingers. Suddenly, something smelled of burning wood. "Is anyone else up? Is SkekVar practicing fire again?"
"Mistress," Lazul said. "You're setting fire to the floor." He pointed an arm at the glowing rings forming around Ghost's feet.
Ghost leaped back. She knelt down. Her hands frantically patted down the flames. Ice soon began to form around it. Strings of curses fluttered out of her mouth. Then, Lazul wrapped his arm around hers. A faint glow appeared. Soon, everything was back to normal.
Mother Aughra gave a heavy sigh. "Young Gelfling, you've got a long ways to go before you have better control of your power."
Ghost sighed. "I'm sorry Mother Aughra. I guess I should go to talk with Frostcrystal. Things have been…far too insane to learn any magic further."
Mother Aughra crossed her arms. "I suppose due to the unfortunate circumstances of events, it can't be helped." She grabbed a large walking staff that leaned against the doorway. "I'm no different. It's about time I leave as well."
Ghost's eyes widened. She briefly looked at the floor then at the old seer. She got up and followed her. She was able to take a few steps as the sun began to envelop her. She also took notice of the crystal Starbird sunning itself through the leaking rays.
"Where are you going?" Ghost asked. "There's no way you can do this alone."
Just as Ghost said that, an arrow appeared. It thunked only a few feet from where they were. A long piece of white wood with several red feathers graced it.
"What in Thra?" Ghost breathed. Beneath her, ice formed once again. Fearless and Grumble barked loudly beside her.
"My apologies." A soothing voice reached her ears. Then, a lumbering shape soon appeared from the underbrush a few feet away. He had a hump on his back which held a quiver of arrows. A bow slung on his shoulder. Tan skin that turned a slight gold in the sunlight. White hair tied in a top knot. A long tail trailed behind him. "I didn't mean to cause alarm to you, Ghost."
Ghost gawked at the mysterious stranger. "H-how do you know my-"
"Ghost!"
Ghost turned to see SkekMal run over to her. Mageln straddled on his back. Before Ghost could say "Good morning", she was scooped up in his arms. His chest pressed against her head. His heart was beating loud. On her back, Lazul and the pelt shifted in slight discomfort.
"Are you all right?" He asked. His voice betrayed a twinge of fear.
Ghost nodded. "I'm all right. I was just spooked." Below her, Fearless and Grumble barked and jumped on SkekMal. Eyes pleading for a belly scratch.
SkekMal glared at the creature in front of them. "Archer! What's the meaning of this?! Why did you come here?"
The creature blinked at them. He took only a few steps. However, he stood in place the moment SkekMal raised a blade. "The chaos in the forest has left Thra in turmoil. Mother Aughra needs to regain her power. If she doesn't, then all our paths are shrouded."
Ghost touched her cheek. She has yet to even practice her own visions. Her hearts sank as she recalled the inability. Ears dropped slightly.
"Bite your tongue!" SkekMal hissed. "You've obviously haven't seen Ghost's powers. They're not complete but hold more promise than I've seen in my lifetime."
Ghost lifted her head. Her eyes brightened. A hint of pink scrawled along her cheeks. "SkekMal…"
Mother placed a hand on the Hunter. "I don't dismiss that myself. However, both of you need to control the powers that are far older than you and beyond your reckoning." She walked over to Urva. The duo nodded and went into the forest.
Ghost stared at SkekMal for a little longer. His white feathers glowed in the light of the sun. His skin took on regal blue. Emerald eyes burning as they followed them to the distance. Her heart skipped as he turned his head towards her.
"Ghost…Don't…Don't mind him". The Hunter's eyes softened. "He's hardly seen you…Perhaps…a hunt should help with your powers." He set her down.
Ghost looked at the house. She couldn't help but wonder if Frostcrystal would be up. "Shouldn't we wait for Frostcrystal and see if she might assist us?"
SkekMal shook his head. "By the looks of her last night, I think she's finally went to bed. I also saw her walking with The Emperor's help."
Ghost's mouth dropped open. That was the first time she's ever heard anything like it. Emperor was kind to her at times when she was a baby but he hardly been generous with the others. Let alone someone that tried to kill him just moments ago. I wonder what happened?
SkekMal set her down. He adjusted his weapons. He scruntched up as Maglen moved from his back to his front. Her red eye glowed eagerly. The Hunter grimaced. "Does it always feel so uncomfortable to you?" He pointed at his Djinn.
Ghost shook her head. "Not really. It's a strange feeling but then again, my Djinn isn't covered in spikes."
"Hey! These spikes have been huge lifesavers!" Mageln glared at Ghost.
SkekMal gave an annoyed look. "Yes…Which is why you were stuck in a basket until Pryodin had to help you." He was smacked in the face with one of the arms. "Can we get going? It is best to replenish supplies before any unwanted company happens." He marched into the trees.
Ghost sighed. She could see her Fizzgigs both whimpering at her. She couldn't help but laugh. Awww! They want to join in. "Ok, but stay close and be careful when I'm doing magic."
Ghost walked over to the light of the sun. She allowed its warmth to absorb into her. She tried to allow her fire heart to take its course. Her body began to develop more fur. Her ears grew. Whiskers appeared on her face. Face outstretched. Her body fully transformed into her fire spirit form. Lazul and the pelt draped over her head. She saw SkekMal staring at her. Something about that made her feel a bit…eager. Something that felt like an emotion from another lifetime.
Her tiger mouth split into a mischievous smile. Her orange eye glowed. "Come and get me, hunter." She leaped over him. Wings flared out. Before long, she could hear SkekMal growl. One that makes her own hearts leap.
—-(Sometime later)-
"So, how long have you known the Archer?" Ghost asked. She wiped her claws clean of the blood from a muckcrawler, a creature that resembled a worm and a monkey. They were already being dangerous parasites to a herd of Landstriders that were just a few feet from Spriton territory. If they got anywhere near Treesong, as Frostcrystal said, it would feed on two barrels worth of her blood. As well as made for delicious stew when cooked just right.
SkekMal was silent for a moment. He cleaned his blade with a cloth. On his lap, Fearless was curled up. The gray Fizzgig whimpered for a pat on the head. Magln looked up at him with her red eye. "We…go back…Back to…when we came into being."
"Oh…" Ghost began to recall her visions. The tall creatures that stood before the Skeksis appeared. "Are there…more like him?"
SkekMal nodded. "Yes. However, they vanished into the Crystal Desert some time ago." He lowered it. "I haven't seen him since…the event you've witnessed."
Ghost knew what he meant. She pressed her head against his. She nuzzled him. A soft purr erupted from her throat. Lazul shifted around and snatched the pelt before it fell off her head.
SkekMal laughed. "You're loving this form a little too much are you."
"Well," Ghost tried to hide her own laughter but failed. Her eyes sparkled as she looked at him once again. "Can't wait to master my ice spirit form. I'm sure it can set a few challenges for you." Wait! She thought. Was I flirting just now?!
Lazul slithered to the front of her face. "Mistress, it's best if you don't get distracted with your urges. Besides, we have company."
Ghost shot her head up. All of her ears flicked up. She peered around the area. She couldn't see anything at first. Then, she spotted a large shape darting away from them.
SkekMal also got up onto his feet. Blades drawn. The Magln covered his body with armor. "You saw that?"
Ghost nodded. She sniffed the air. An unease crawled into her. This was an all too familiar smell. The smell of death. Her hackles raised at the thought.
"We should go…" SkekMal whispered. He gathered all the meat as best as he could. He managed to wrap it up with a few satchels he managed to take with him. He was by far prepared. Another quality Ghost loved so much.
Ghost sniffed again. "Still close." She glanced at Lazul as the Djinn slithered down her back. The pelt draped between her wings. "How many?"
Lazul's eye widened. Ghost could've sworn that he was trembling. "One…just one. However, there's something strange about it."
"Strange how?" Ghost asked.
Magln's red eye appeared in the center of SkekMal's chest. "It's…kinda alive but it seems to be made of other people's hearts."
Ghost gave a confused look. "What?"
More rustling grew louder. This time, from the south of their position. Ghost and SkekMal grew tense. The Fizzgigs growled at the unknown enemy. Pryoden's feathers flared out. Hissing and clicking his beak.
Ghost took a step. "Mal…" She lowered her voice as best as she could. "I'll distract it while you find an opening." She took another step when a flash of light appeared before her. She flinched and her world changed. She found herself standing in a strange marketplace. The ground was an orange-red. Stalls lined the area. She tried to smell for any spices, but nothing came. An illusion?
A Felidawn walked down the street. She wore a beautiful shawl of emerald green. A string of coins crowned her head. Her head was held high like a royal would normally do. She had a pelt that was much like Sparks. On her side was an elegant dagger that had the carvings of the fire spirit. She ignored the shouts of the merchants asking her to purchase things.
"Lady Solia!"
Ghost followed the lady's gaze. Running to the regal Felidawn was a servant that seemed to be a Flowerweaver. She seemed to bear a resemblance to Drum.
"Oh! Dainty. Sorry about that," Lady Solia said. Her smile was apologetic. "I was busy admiring the marketplace. I wish I could buy something."
The Flowerweaver handed a satchel made out of silk. "That's why I came running! Plus, you're a fool to come out here without bodyguards." She lightly smacked her lady with it.
Lady Solia laughed. She took it from her servant. "Come now. You know it's been an eternity since I've been outside." She frowned. "Besides, those guards are just doing it for my hand. It's bad enough that the other noble Felidawn men I had to turn down were just…ugh…bland."
Dainty sighed. "I know the feeling. I just want to have a family of my own, but with the breeding flower has yet to bloom for me."
Ghost blinked in confusion. Breeding flower?
Lady Solia shook her head. "I know you've been wanting a child for so long. I do too. I'm sure the next spirits will help us get babies soon enough." To her shock, someone bumped into her and snatched her satchel. "Hey!"
Running away from her was another Felidawn. His was a bit of a richer shade of bronze. Orange eyes filled with mischief. His scraggy clothes clung to his thin body. "You should have eyes on your things than your mouth, royal."
Lady Solia hissed. Ears flat on her head. "Get back here, you rogue!" She chased after the stranger.
Dainty tried to run after them. "Wait for me!"
The vision ended. Ghost shook herself. Just in time to see a set of jaws coming at her. Disorganized voices ran through the air. Ghost dodged with only a few seconds to spare. She stared in horror at the creature that was standing before her.
It had multiple mouths on its body. Leathery wings thrashing about. At least two eyes sat on a pumpkin-shaped head. It writhed around, knocking a tree over. SkekMal and the Fizzgigs tried their best to keep their distance.
Ghost froze for a moment. All the ends of her fur raised. Then, her orange eye blazed brighter. Her fangs bared out in a hiss. Claws out, she charged. She avoided a few tentacles as they lashed at her. She jumped. Her claws raked along its back, only a few inches above one eye, earning her a scream.
"Ghooooooost! Ayuuuuuk!"
Ghost gaped. She landed with a thud, almost losing balance in the process. Wings flapped to regain the balance. Eyes wide. "Is that?"
Lazul wrapped his arms around Ghost's head. "Mistress. Focus on the task at hand." He tried to absorb her anxiety but he couldn't. Something was blocking it. A weird vibration overtook him.
"It…can imitate voices?" SkekMal asked. Then, he remembered what Drum and the others had said. His eyes went wide with horror. "No…"
"It steals them," Ghost gaped. Then, her fury reached a boil. "You monster!" Ghost flared out her wings and took flight. "You stole Ekty's voice!"
The monster produced a tentacle from its body. It reached out to her as she dove at him. Aimed at her throat.
"Mistress!" Lazul cried out. His eye glowed. The blue light blinded everyone for a moment. His arms stretched and warped. The pelt hidden beneath the writhing mass covering Ghost. When it dimmed down, Ghost stood proud. A tentacle in her powerful jaws.
SkekMal gaped. He couldn't believe what he was seeing. A winged cat monster with cobalt blue armor that blazed bright blue from the flames that danced on it. His heart thumped at the gorgeous sight. Every muscle was emphasized. Wings flared out. He couldn't help but wonder what Ghost would look like in her original form.
"SkekMal! Focus before you drool all over the place!" Magln's voice cut through his stupor.
To his embarrassment, she was right. There was no time to act like a lovesick fool. He had to be at Ghost's side. However, one question rumbled in his head. How do we get Ornamentalist's voice back?
—-(Elsewhere)-
Drum yawned. He scratched himself as he got up from his bed. It felt weird having a bedroom of his own. However, he didn't have to worry about Peepers scaring everyone first thing in the morning. He looked over to see his little Peeper Beetle snuggled up in the pile of scrapped cloth that Deet and Brea gave him after they were done crafting proper reins for Treesong.
"Good morning, Peepers." Drum cooed. He lowered a claw and stroked the carapace. He giggled as Peepers wiggled and yawned. "Stay here. I'm going to make breakfast." He went over to a small pile of clothing that was made for him. He couldn't help but to look in the mirror. His stomach has gotten bigger now. Not as big as Ayuk's but it didn't look like a hollow pit.
He soon made a face in the mirror. He laughed. Drum couldn't believe how much has changed. He and the others were no longer skinny. All eyes bright with life and wonder. Still afraid but easier to handle with Ghost, Deet, Rian and the others. How most of them could talk. His heart sank when he thought of poor Spark.
The Felidawn seemed a bit sad when she was around company. He even noticed her trying to move her mouth but no sound came out. All she could do was make gestures. It doesn't help that she's starting to develop the emotion that Rian said was "anger".
He finished dressing up. He grabbed a brush for his fur. "Time to get cooking." Drum walked out of the room and walked down the stairs. He hummed a song that he remembered from the Podlings. Just as he finished, he spotted Spark sitting in a kitchen chair. He sighed. He walked over. "Good morning, Spark."
Spark turned her eyes to Drum. Her ears drooped slightly. She gave a small wave. In her other claws she had a book in the other.
Drum walked over to her. Then, he soon noticed SkekEkt in his Podling form. "Oh! Morning, Ekty-Oops! Sorry." He bowed. "Ornamentalist." He took note of SkekEkt grimacing at him. He sat in a chair. "What are you two doing? Want me to cook you anything?"
The duo shook their heads. They both looked as though they hadn't had much sleep. SkekEkt handed him some paper.
Drum looked at the words. He wasn't a fast reader like Cerabrite, but he could make them out. "Oh…Talking problems." He gave them a sympathetic look.
At that, SkekEkt tried to hit him. His tiny fist balled up. He was stopped by Spark.
Spark shook her head. She began to write something on a blank piece of paper. She handed it to Drum. In sloppy letters: I wanted to learn how to write nicely so SkekVar can read.
Drum thought really hard on what to say next. He wasn't good at saying words the same way Scrollkeeper and Brea do, but he knows they need help. "Well…I'm sure he'll appreciate it. I think Ghost and Frostcrystal might-"
GHHHOOOOOOST!
The group froze at the sound of the wail. Before long, Treesong let out a bellow. Razz squawked in the room nearby. Shouts and shuffling was heard from above. Drum exchanged a few looks with Spark and SkekEkt.
"What in all of Thra was that?" SkekAyuk ran into the kitchen. The wide Skeksis panted hard from the running. The Grunaks close behind him.
"I think that was the Ornamentalist's voice," Rian said. His voice firm behind the Gourmand.
SkekEkt began to tremble. Tears watered his eyes. He covered his face. He soon found himself being hugged by Spark.
Rian grimaced. "I'm so sorry, Ornamentalist." He shook his head. His shoulder was patted on by Deet.
Razz fluttered into the room. He panted heavily. Feathers flared out. "Danger! Danger! Voice monster close by!"
"What?!" Everyone cried out in unison.
"Where is it?" All Maudra Mayrin asked. Her full attention at the bird.
"A few clicks north." Razz answered. "Just saw Ghost and SkekMal fighting it."
At this SkekEkt broke free of Spark's hug, snatched his key and ran as fast as his legs could. He frantically looked for a weapon that could be laying around. All he could find was a fire poker about as long as his arm. He grabbed it and went to rush out the door.
"Ornamentalist!" Deet cried. She ran after him. Hup and Rian close behind. "It's dangerous!"
"Need plan!" Hup said.
Rian grabbed SkekEkt by the arm. "Stop it right now!" Rian barely had enough time to dodge the fire poker as it went straight for his head. "You can't help Ghost by putting her in danger."
SkekEkt shook his head. He tried to yank his arm away from Rian. His muted squeaks of protest grew louder. With his other arm, he stabbed Rian with the strange key. He ran the moment the Stonewood Gelfling let go of him. He ignored their protests. His feet kept moving despite his own lungs burning hard.
The only thing he could think about was Ghost. His memory went back to the monster that almost killed him back at that wretched castle. The tentacle slithering down his throat as it took his voice away. A conglomeration of voices laughing at him. Taunting him. He imagined Ghost freeze. Reluctant to hurt the one to bear his voice.
When he reached the clearing, SkekEkt flinched as blood splattered next to him. He froze for a moment. Unsure if the red puddle was from Ghost or someone else. He turned his gaze to where the blood had come from. He saw Ghost in her beast form. It was covered with the most beautiful armor he's ever seen. Wings flared out like a moth. SkekMal was close beside her with his bloodied blades.
The creature was letting out shrieks that filled the air. Words warbled into undistinguishable sentences. It was hard to make out what they were saying. Blood oozed out of every spot. Eyes focused on Ghost and SkekMal. Tentacles lashed out. Knocking trees at every chance it had.
SkekEkt froze in place. His small eyes wide with fear. His weapon threatened to leave his hand. How could he take on something that big? Even in this wretched form?
Ghost cried out as a tentacle wrapped around her neck. She clawed at it. Her gasps are growing more frequent. The armor came alive and spiked. Then, it let out a fire that incinerated it in seconds. More tentacles came at her.
SkekEkt let out a voiceless scream. He lifted the key in his other hand and charged. He ducked as one tentacle aimed at him. He rolled and made his way over to the back of the creature. It had fewer eyes so it made it easier for him to climb up. As he crawled up, he jabbed the key into the creature hard.
It let out painful cries. This time it turned its focus on SkekEkt. The Ornamentalist struggled along the back. The blood slick underneath his hands. Suddenly, he noticed something. A faint, multicolor glow in one of the wounds. Soft voices whispering amongst each other.
SkekEkt crawled over to the spot, ducking from the tentacles. To his relief, Ghost was able to pull apart one while SkekMal chopped another. They really do make a cute pair, he thought. He was soon able to reach the spot where the glow was. The hole was about the size of his fist. He could make out something drumming. Almost as if there were… Hearts! He jammed his Podling fist into the hole. SkekEkt fiddled with the hole, muscle momentarily trapping his hand. He was able to grab something firm.
He yanked with all his might. SkekEkt smiled when a shadow caught his attention. SkekEkt stared up to see a tentacle coming at him. Before he could react, he was smacked away. He went flying and landed hard on the ground. For a moment the world was blurry. A loud ringing resounded in his ears. His hands touched the ground, but he could barely make out if the objects he found were there.
Suddenly, purple claws appeared before him. Lavender fur that seemed surprisingly soft as his fingers touched them. He glanced up to a pair of familiar eyes. He tried to speak, but he coughed. Blood bubbled up to his lips. SkekEkt wiped his sleeve. Arm aching as he did so.
"Hello again." It spoke in a clear voice. Head tilted in a playful manner. "I see that you're in a great deal of trouble." He held up the key that SkekEkt had earlier. "I can help you. Just turn the key and my power will be yours. Just remember your truth."
SkekEkt took it. He could hear Ghost and SkekMal heading to him. Then, a disembodied roar broke free.
"Won't pass through meeeee!" The monster's voice was shrill. The vibration threateing to deafen the Ornamentalist. It was followed by Ghost screaming and SkekMal's growl.
SkekEkt got up. His old bones threaten to break. The blood seeping from places it shouldn't, but he didn't care. His little jewel needed him. He lifted his arm and took the key. He noticed a key-shaped hole just below the moth wing. He plunged the key without thinking. With all of his strength he turned it.
Cloak was soon surrounded by crystals. He gave a small smile as SkekEkt squeaked in fright. "Don't worry…I…won't…be long." The crystal soon enveloped him. A serene statue amongst a chaotic scene.
SkekEkt reached out but a tentacle slammed next to him. He had no strength to roll away. Another one grabbed his leg. He dug into the soil. He tried to pull his leg free. This is it! I'm dead!
A rush of heat hit his back as a blaze appeared before him. The tentacle that pulled him was sliced in two. It was met with a shrill scream. The fire died down enough to make out Spark standing over SkekEkt. Hissing and arching her back. A short sword in her claws. She launched after the monster.
SkekEkt watched as the group fought the monster again. His limbs regain their strength to help him stand. He stood tall. Eyes watching them rip apart the one responsible for stealing his voice. His joy for Ghost and SkekMal grew as they were removing all the tentacles. He felt a tingle in his throat.
Ghost ripped one tentacle off just as the others arrived. She took notice of Orchid and Shield. "Get back! Don't let any-" A tentacle went into her mouth. Slithering down her throat. She choked.
"Ghost!" Orchid cried. A tentacle went straight for her mouth. She grabbed it. She fought against it as hard as she could.
SkekTek instinctively bit into it. He growled and clawed. The Fizzgig followed suit. They kept at it until it broke in two.
SkekEkt stared in pure horror at the sight of Ghost's condition. Her gasps and wheezing filled the air. Eyes wide with terror. He couldn't stand it. He couldn't stand to be like this anymore. His lungs were ready to burst. He opened his mouth, a shrill shockwave exploded all around him.
The creature was flung back. The tentacles slithered out of Ghost's throat. The other broke in two. It landed on a few trees with a resounding crash.
Ghost fell on her side. She shrunk back to her original form. She touched her throat. The Grunak helped her to her feet as she coughed. Orchid and SkekTek kneeled in front of her.
"Are you ok, Ghost?" Orchid asked.
Ghost coughed. "My throat hurts. More than the times I've had a cold. Worse, it felt like a part of me was ripped away." Lazul shifted to his normal form. The pelt draped on her shoulder.
SkekMal hugged her in a flash. His armor faded away. The Fizzgigs whimpered by his side.
Ghost was stunned. This was a truly strange sensation. A warmth that she needed. The roar brought her back to reality. She turned her head to see SkekEkt standing in front of the group, trying to look menacing despite his current form. Her eyes widened. "Ekty! What are you doing?"
SkekEkt pointed at the monster. His eyes narrowed. Then, he pointed to his own chest. He repeated the gesture a few times.
Brea's eyes widened. "Wait! I…I think he's found the weak spot!"
"Where?!" Everyone yelled in unison.
As if to answer the question, the creature got back up. Most of the eyes were now gone. The remaining eyes leered at them on the main head. A large hole in the chest gaped out. A strange thundering noise echoed in the crevice. Purple light shining through.
"That must be it!" Deet said. Behind her, she could feel the little black pelt stamping its hoof. She placed a hand on the head to calm it.
Ghost stood on her feet. "Let's see if we can all shove a blade in there." She looked at Frostcrystal. "Is that possible?"
Frostcrystal snarled. "Just strike now!" She ran to the creature. Her jaws open wide. She sprung out. However, she was intercepted by Spark.
Spark seemed to be trying to take something. Fur stood on end. Fangs bared. Fire blazing out of her paws. She charged at the monster. In a matter of seconds, she was in the crevice. She was snarling. Claws raked against the opening.
"Let's help her," Rian said. He raised his sword. Gurjin followed. Hup raised his weapon.
The boys charged. Ghost tried to take a step but stumbled. SkekTek held her up. The rest charged. Weapons gleaming in the light. They stabbed and cut the tentacles that remained. Screams hung in the air. A sickening squelch sounded.
Spark pulled herself out of the mad group. In her jaws was a stone covered in dark purple ooze. It dripped onto the ground. A faint sizzle was heard upon impact. She showed no hesitation. Spark slammed it on the ground. With a closed fist, she struck it again and again until it was nothing but dust.
The creature froze. Cracks began to form. The voices warped and melded, turning into a sound that made everyone back away as quickly as possible. The dark skin turned pale green.
"What's happening?" SkekVar asked.
Frostcrystal grimaced. "I don't know." Her eyes widened as a high pitch whine hit the ears. The statue rattled. "Get down!" She grabbed SkekSo as she went down.
Everyone else but Spark did. Upon seeing this, SkekVar got up and shielded her just as the statue exploded. A shockwave spread out through the small patch of forest. The trees rattled upon the impact. Birds and animals scattered in all directions. An eerie silence feel in the forest once again.
Groans soon followed. SkekVar's being the loudest. The general slowly got up from his spot. He rubbed his head. "Ow…Hadn't felt anything like that since the Arathmim war."
A murmur sounded beside him. Weak and soft. SkekVar turned his head to the sound. It was Spark.
"Everyone all right?" All Maudra Mayrin asked.
"Aside from being blown to bits," Gurjin answered as he got up. He shook the leaves stuck to his hair. "I'm doing great!"
"Same," Hup replied. He waved his spoon around. It broke in two. Hup groaned.
Shield looked at it. "We really need to get you a better weapon, friend."
Everyone murmured in agreement. They all got up from their spots. Dust got off as they patted down. Hup had Deet help him up, the Podling graciously took her hand. Ghost, on the other hand, stood for a few minutes before she fell back on her butt. Her breathing was a little uneven. She raised a hand to assure them that there was no danger.
SkekVar groaned. He rubbed his stomach. "Is breakfast ready? I don't think I have the strength to do anything else besides eat."
"V-var…"
SkekVar froze. He turned his head to the sight. His gaze landed on Spark. Her eyes met his. She looked like a childling trying to tell her parents something. He tilted at his head. "Spark?"
"Sk-SkekVar…" Spark said. Her eyes wided, tears streamed down her face. Ears perked. "SkekVar! SkekVar!" She hugged him.
"By Thra!" Kylan exclaimed. "She can talk!"
SkekSo scratched his head. "How was that even possible?"
Frostcrystal's eyes lit up. She flinched from her own pain. "Of course! Her voice was stolen when she was a baby! I've heard several Frost Giants that a baby Felidawn was taken to have her voice ripped away just so the crying would stop annoying one of the bone lords!"
Deet gaped. "How cruel!"
The All Maudra grimaced. She turned to Frostcrystal. "We must get to the Spriton immediately! We don't know if anyone else could be affected."
Frostcrystal nodded. Suddenly, she sniffed the air. Ears lifted. Eyes darted around.
"That won't be necessary." A voice called a few feet from them.
The group followed the direction of the voice. They were soon surrounded by Sprition on top of their landstriders. The black-haired Gelflings had a few weapons in their hands. Some were nets. Among them was the Maudra. The leader bowed her head.
All Maudra Mayrin bowed. "Muadra Mera. I'm glad to see you're doing well."
"As are you," Muadra Mera said. She looked at the other lords. Her eyes widened. "You're alive!"
SkekVar snorted. "Why wouldn't we-" His eyes lit up as the answer came to him. He snarled. "Chamberlain."
Ghost rolled her eyes. Lazul mimicked her movements. They just had to hear that name once again. Her stomach growled and her cheeks flushed with embarrassment.
SkekMal lifted her into his arms. He turned to the Spriton Maudra. "Any chance that you have some food with you?"
—-(Sometime later)-
The group celebrated their small victory. After dreamfasting and having a much deserved breakfast, they all went back to the capital of the Spriton territory. It wasn't much compared to Ha'rar but it had a much needed welcome they all needed. Especially after the number of close calls they've had.
SkekEkt had yet to utter a word after everything that happened. He sat in a large chair just as the sun went down. His Podling form went back to his Skeksis form. He flinched at all the Spriton Gelfling staring at him in pure awe.
"I have to admit," Maudra Mara said. Eyes wide. "I know we dreamfasted this, but…I never expected to be this startling up close." Her eyes went back to the eyeless forms of the now formed pelts moving around. The black one got too close to the fire. Deet pulling it away in time. "Or that…"
All Maudra Mayrin nodded. "It's…hard to get used to. However, I prefer to be in their company than Chamberlain's." She shuddered in her own seat. Her gaze turned somber. "Have you any news of Seladon?"
Maudra Mara shook her head. "The last I've heard. She placed a price on Ghost's head. Charging her for the murder of the Lords of the Crystal. SkekEkt included." She looked at the ground.
All Maudra Mayrin stared at SkekEkt. The Ornamentalist was adjusting his hair. Long wisps of hair threatened to cover his face. She laughed as SkekEkt lowered his head to let a bunch of Spriton maidens attend to his hair.
Ghost, Deet and Brea soon joined in. All three maidens attended each strand with ease. Ghost took it another step further with each flower that Lazul handed to her. Even the largest one had been able to fit into the cluster of colored petals.
Deet looked at her own reflection in a small mirror. Her eyes lit up. "Wow! Ghost this is great! How were you able to pull this off?"
Ghost gave a small smile. Her eyes seemed to be a bit dull. Ears lowered. Lazul was now off of her, resting in a nearby bucket of water. The finished the last braid with a single twist. "SkekEkt showed me how. Then, some of the guards would allow me to practice. As for the flowers, I collect them every spring and have them set up when I'm not doing chores."
Brea tilted her head. "What happens when winter rolls in?"
Ghost began to make a flower crown. The thin stems split by her thumb. "I either press them, turn them into solvents for healing or return them outside so they can grow." Her eyes fluttered for a moment. Her fingers fumbled as she tried to entwine the stems together.
Deet took note of Ghost's flushed face. "Ghost? Are you ok?"
Ghost gave a soft sigh. "Yeah…Just a bit…tired. I guess after everything that happened. Just-" She collapsed to the right. Her flowers spread out.
"Jewel!" SkekEkt shrieked. He got out of his chair and lumbered over to her. On his way, a few Gelfling stumbled backward at the Skeksis' sudden movement. He knelt down and picked her up.
Ghost opened her eyes. "Ekty…You talked…"
Brea placed a hand on her forehead. "She's burning up!"
SkekEkt whimpered. "Ohhh! I knew she had a fever. That last fight nearly killed her!" He went over to the house.
The house was set on the ground just a few feet from the village. A few bags laid against the door frame. Smells of fresh herbs and flowers filled the foyer as SkekEkt entered. The place was a bit less of a disaster now that everything was cleaned up. However, it was in need of some new decorations. He went up the stairs, his eyes scanning for Ghost's room. He could faintly hear Fizzgigs hopping on the steps. He rolled his eyes.
"E…Ekty…" Ghost lifted her head slightly. Her face now fully flushed. "I'm…I'm glad you're able to talk again…" Her eyes drooped. "S-sorry I turned you into a Podling." With whatever strength she had left, she pointed to her room. "One with the white flower."
SkekEkt soon found what she meant. He opened it and waddled inside. He adjusted the sheets. His thin arms lowered her down into the bed. He put the sheets back on her. He stroked her face as she began to fall asleep. "It wasn't your fault. You did everything to save me." He scratched his chin. "Though I'd admit…being a Podling did have some advantages." The Ornamentalist widened his eyes. "Don't tell the others I said that!" His answer was a serene smile on her face.
